Polyharmonic Boundary Value Problems: Positivity Preserving and Nonlinear Higher Order Elliptic Equations in Bounded Domains
Linear elliptic equations arise in several models describing various phenomena in the applied sciences, the most famous being the second order stationary heat eq- tion or,equivalently, the membraneequation. Forthis intensivelywell-studiedlinear problem there are two main lines of results. The ?rst line consists of existence and regularity results. Usually the solution exists and gains two orders of differen- ation with respect to the source term. The second line contains comparison type results, namely the property that a positive source term implies that the solution is positive under suitable side constraints such as homogeneous Dirichlet bou- ary conditions. This property is often also called positivity preserving or, simply, maximum principle. These kinds of results hold for general second order elliptic problems, see the books by Gilbarg-Trudinger [198] and Protter-Weinberger [347]. For linear higher order elliptic problems the existence and regularitytype results - main, as one may say, in their full generality whereas comparison type results may fail. Here and in the sequel higher order means order at least four. Most interesting models, however, are nonlinear. By now, the theory of second order elliptic problems is quite well developed for semilinear, quasilinear and even for some fully nonlinear problems. If one looks closely at the tools being used in the proofs, then one ?nds that many results bene?t in some way from the positivity preserving property. Techniques based on Harnack's inequality, De Giorgi-Nash- Moser's iteration, viscosity solutions etc.

Vibration Analysis of Rotors
This text is intended for use as an advanced course in either rotordynamics or vibration at the graduate level. This text has mostly grown out of the research work in my laboratory and the lectures given to graduate students in the Mechanical Engineering Department, KAIST. The text contains a variety of topics not normally found in rotordynamics or vibration textbooks. The text emphasizes the analytical aspects and is thus quite different from conventional rotordynamics texts; potential readers are expected to have a firm background in elementary rotordynamics and vibration. In most previously published rotordynamics texts, the behavior of simple rotors has been of a primary concern, while more realistic, multi-degree-f-freedom or continuous systems are seldom treated in a rigorous way, mostly due to the difficulty of a mathematical treatment of such complicated systems. When one wanted to gain a deep insight into dynamic phenomena of complicated rotor systems, one has, in the past, either had to rely on computational techniques, such as the transfer matrix and finite element methods, or cautiously to extend ideas learned from simple rotors whose analytical solutions are readily available. The former methods are limited in the interpretation of results, since the calculations relate only to the simulated case, not to more general system behavior. Ideas learned from simple rotors can, fortunately, often be extended to many practical rotor systems, but there is of course no guarantee of their validity.

This book was written as a graduate student course--Shock Dynamics. Up to now, the first author has taught this course to the graduate students in the field of Fluid Mechanics, Department of Modern Mechanics, University of Science and Technology of China for seven times. In the spring semester 1989, during his visit to the United States, the first author taught this course to the graduate students of Department of Mathemat ics, University of Colorado at Denver. At the same time, he gave a series of four lectures on Shock Dynamics to the graduate students of Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1991, during the first author's visit to Japan, he gave some lectures on Shock Dynamics in Tohoku University, University of Tokyo and Kyushu Uni versity. The dynamic phenomena of shock waves such as propagation, diffraction, reflection, refraction and interaction of shock waves may be studied by using experimental methods, numerical calculations and theoretical analyses. Although the detailed flow patterns of phenomena of shock motion can be obtained by using experimental methods and numerical calculations of solving Euler Equation or Navier-Stokes Equation, for example, the diffractions of shock waves by wedges form various phenomena of reflection--RR, SMR, CMR and DMR, we also need to analyse the process of the formation of shock waves in various phenomena of diffraction, reflection and interaction by using theoretical methods.

Sir Charles Tilston Bright (1832-88) was a renowned telegraph engineer, best known for his role in laying the first successful transatlantic cable in 1858, for which he was knighted. Bright later worked on the telegraph networks that would span not only the British Empire but the entire globe. Written by his brother Edward Brailsford Bright (1831-1913) and son Charles (1863-1937), both telegraph engineers who worked alongside him, this two-volume biography, first published in 1898, would do much to cement Bright's reputation as an electrical engineer, providing an insider account of telegraphy's formative years. Volume 1 traces Bright's career as an early employee of the world's first public telegraphy company, the Electric Telegraph Company, and his work on land and submarine cable telegraphy, culminating in the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cables in the mid-nineteenth century.

Acoustics of Wood
Considerable activity in the acoustics of wood has occurred since the first edition of this book in 1995. An informal survey of a number of the published articles and papers presented at international conferences revealed that the interest of the wood science community is continually increasing. In this context, I felt c- pelled to revise the text in accordance with newer findings and this prompted the addition in the present book of 159 new references added to the existing 850 in the first edition. As a result of the favorable comments upon the first edition, from students and colleagues, I have included a part on mathematical theory related to wave pro- gation in orthotropic solids in the general text, in order to enable the interested reader to follow the essentially physical aspects of the subject. A new chapter related to acousto-ultrasonics is introduced; Chapters 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 have been considerably expanded and a significant redistribution of the subject matter from the earlier edition has been made.

Dynamics of Mechanical Systems with Coulomb Friction
This book addresses the general theory of motion of mechanical systems with Coulomb friction. In particular, the book focuses on the following specific problems: derivation of the equations of motion, Painleve's paradoxes, tangential impact and dynamic seizure, and frictional self-excited oscillations. In addition to the theoretical results, the book contains a detailed description of experiments that show that, in general, the friction force at the instant of transition to motion is determined by the rate of tangential load and does not depend on the duration of the previous contact. These results are used to develop the theory of frictional self-excited oscillations. A number of industrially relevant mechanisms are considered, including the Painleve-Klein scheme, epicyclic mechanisms, crank mechanisms, gear transmission, the link mechanism of a planing machine, and the slider of metal-cutting machine tools. The book is intended for researchers, engineers and students in mechanical engineering.

Large Eddy Simulation is a relatively new and still evolving computatio nal strategy for predicting turbulent flows. It is now widely used in research to elucidate fundamental interactions in physics of turbulence, to predict phe nomena which are closely linked to the unsteady features of turbulence and to create data bases against which statistical closure models can be asses sed. However, its applicability to complex industrial flows, to which statisti cal models are applied routinely, has not been established with any degree of confidence. There is, in particular, a question mark against the prospect of LES becoming an economically tenable alternative to Reynolds-averaged N avier-Stokes methods at practically high Reynolds numbers and in complex geometries. Aerospace flows pose particularly challenging problems to LES, because of the high Reynolds numbers involved, the need to resolve accura tely small-scale features in the thin and often transitional boundary layers developing on aerodynamic surfaces. When the flow also contains a separated region - due to high incidence, say - the range and disparity of the influen tial scales to be resolved is enormous, and this substantially aggravates the problems of resolution and cost. It is just this combination of circumstances that has been at the heart of the project LESFOIL to which this book is devoted. The project combined the efforts, resources and expertise of 9 partner organisations, 4 universities, 3 industrial companies and 2 research institu tes.

In today's changing world, enterprises need to survive in an ever volatile competitive market environment. Their success will depend on the strategies they practice and adopt. Every year, new ideas and concepts are emerging in order for companies to become successful enterprises. Cross Border Enterprises is the new 'hot' topic arising in the business process world at present. Many terms have been coined together and are being driven in the popular business press to describe this new strategy of conducting business, ie. Extended Enterprise (Browne et al. , 1995; O'Neill and Sacket, 1994; Busby and Fan, 1993; Caskey, 1995), Virtual Enterprise (Goldmann and Preiss, 1991; Parunak, 1994; Goranson, 1995; Doumeingts et al. , 1995), Seamless Enterprise (Harrington, 1995), Inter-Enterprise Networking (Browne et al. , 1993), Dynamic Enterprise (Weston, 1996) and so on. Many people have argued that they mean the same thing, just using different words. Others feel they are different. But how different are they? In this paper the authors will present some basic lines required from this new strategy for conducting and coordinating distributed business processes (DBP), as well as trying to clarify the particularities of two of the widest spread terms related to it: Virtual and Extended Enterprise. 2 CLUSTERS OF PRESSURES The business world currently faces an increased trend towards globalisation, environmentally benign production and customisation of products and processes, forcing individual enterprises to work together across the value chain in order to cope with market influences.

Three-Dimensional Velocity and Vorticity Measuring and Image Analysis Techniques: Lecture Notes from the Short Course held in Zurich, Switzerland, 3-6 September 1996
The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zurich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems. One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed is to determine the three components of the velocity and all their first derivatives with good temporal resolution and accuracy in turbulent flows. The old and weIl established method of hot-wire anemometry was used for this purpose. One of the main achievements in this context is the construction of miniature multi-wire probes. This technique was introduced to the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management of ETH Zurich by Profs. A. Tsinober and E. Kit from Tel-Aviv University. This was made possible by the generous financial support by ETH, for which I would like to express my gratitude on this occasion. In addition, Dr. F.E. Joergensen from DANTEC contributed an example of recent developments in the hardware ofConstant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), for which I am very thankful.

This aspect is particularly important and formally required when operating in Quality Systems. Therefore, measures management must be rigorous and it can find a concrete support in the topics discussed in this volume, because of the attention to metrological part and the removal of unnecessary restrictions. Giulio Barbato, Alessandro Germak and Gianfranco Genta are professors of Experimental Statistics and Mechanical Measurements at Politecnico di Torino. The book presents a description of a mathematical model of flow past a lifting system, performing steady and unsteady motions in close proximity to the underlying solid surface (ground). This case is interesting for practical purposes because both the aerodynamic and the economic efficiency of the system near the ground are most pronounced. Use of the method of matched asymptotic expansions enables closed form solutions for the aerodynamic characteristics of the wings-in-ground effect. These can be used for design, identification, and processing of experimental data in the course of developing ground effect vehicles. The term extreme ground effect, widely used through out the book, is associated with very small relative ground clearances of the order of 10% or less. The theory of a lifting surface, moving in immediate proximity to the ground, represents one of the few limiting cases that can be treated analytically. The author would like to acknowledge that this work has been influenced by the ideas of Professor Sheila E. Widnall, who was the first to apply the matched asymptotics techniques to treat lifting flows with the ground effect. Saint Petersburg, Russia February 2000 Kirill V. Rozhdestvensky Contents 1. Understanding the physical and thermomechanical response of materials subjected to intensive dynamic loading is a challenge of great significance in engineering today. This volume assumes the task of gathering both experimental and diagnostic methods in one place, since not much information has been previously disseminated in the scientific literature.

Computational Fluid Dynamics: An Introduction
Computational Fluid Dynamics: An Introduction grew out of a von Karman Institute (VKI) Lecture Series by the same title ?rst presented in 1985 and repeated with modi?cations every year since that time. The objective, then and now, was to present the subject of computational ?uid dynamics (CFD) to an audience unfamiliar with all but the most basic numerical techniques and to do so in such a way that the practical application of CFD would become clear to everyone. A second edition appeared in 1995 with updates to all the chapters and when that printing came to an end, the publisher requested that the editor and authors consider the preparation of a third edition. Happily, the authors received the request with enthusiasm. The third edition has the goal of presenting additional updates and clari?cations while preserving the introductory nature of the material. The book is divided into three parts. John Anderson lays out the subject in Part I by ?rst describing the governing equations of ?uid dynamics, concentrating on their mathematical properties which contain the keys to the choice of the numerical approach. Methods of discretizing the equations are discussed and transformation techniques and grids are presented. Two examples of numerical methods close out this part of the book: source and vortex panel methods and the explicit method. Part II is devoted to four self-contained chapters on more advanced material. Roger Grundmann treats the boundary layer equations and methods of solution.

The IUT AM Symposium on Micromechanics of Plasticity and Damage of Multiphase Materials was held in Sevres, Paris, France, 29 August - 1 September 1995. The Symposium was attended by 83 persons from 18 countries. In addition 17 young French students attended the meeting. During the 4 day meeting, a total of 55 papers were presented, including 24 papers in the poster sessions. The meeting was divided into 7 oral and 3 poster sessions. The 7 oral sessions were the following: - Plasticity and Viscoplasticity I and II; - Phase transformations; - Damage I and II; - Statistical and geometrical aspects; - Cracks and interfaces. Each poster session was introduced by a Rapporteur, as follows: - Session I (Plasticity and Viscoplasticity): G. Cailletaud; - Session 2 (Damage): D. Franc;:ois; - Session 3 (Phase transformation; statistical and geometrical aspects): D. Jeulin. The main purpose of the Symposium was the discussion of the state of the art in the development of micromechanical models used to predict the macroscopic mechanical behaviour of mUltiphase solid materials. These materials consist of at least two chemically different phases, present either initially or formed during plastic deformation, when a strain-induced phase transformation takes place. One session was devoted to the latter case. Continuously strengthened composite materials, containing long fibers, were out of the scope of the Symposium.

Statistical Physics of Fluids: Basic Concepts and Applications
The focus is on the main physical ideas and mathematical methods of the microscopic theory of fluids, starting with the basic principles of statistical mechanics. The detailed derivation of results is accompanied by explanation of their physical meaning. The same approach refers to several specialized topics of the liquid state, most of which are recent developments, such as: a perturbation approach to the surface tension, an algebraic perturbation theory of polar nonpolarizable fluids and ferrocolloids, a semi-phenomenological theory of the Tolman length and some others.
