A Modern Course in Aeroelasticity
Aeroelasticity is the study of flexible structures situated in a flowing fluid. Its modern origins are in the field of aerospace engineering, but it has now expanded to include phenomena arising in other fields such as bioengineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering. The present volume is a teaching text for a first, and possibly second, course in aeroelasticity. It will also be useful as a reference source on the fundamentals of the subject for practitioners. In this third edition, several chapters have been revised and three new chapters added. The latter include a brief introduction to `Experimental Aeroelasticity', an overview of a frontier of research `Nonlinear Aeroelasticity', and the first connected, authoritative account of `Aeroelastic Control' in book form. The authors are drawn from a range of fields including aerospace engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, rotorcraft and turbomachinery. Each author is a leading expert in the subject of his chapter and has many years of experience in consulting, research and teaching.

Problems Book For Probabilistic Methods For The Theory Of Structures With Complete Worked Through Solutions
The first edition of the combined monograph and textbook Probabilistic Methods in the Theory of Structures was published by Wiley-Interscience in 1983. 1n 1999, Dover Publications, Inc. published its second edition under shorter title Probabilistic Theory of Structures. Now, World Scientific has expanded into a 3rd edition to include Problems with Complete Worked-Through Solutions. This compendium of solutions was written in response to requests by numerous university educators around the world, since it has been adopted as a textbook or an additional reading for both undergraduate and graduate courses. The author hopes that the availability of such solutions manual will further help to establish the courses dealing with probabilistic strength of materials, design, random buckling, and random vibration. The material itself was developed by author for various undergraduate and graduate courses, during years 1972-1989 at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, Israel, at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, year 1979/80 at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA and at the Florida Atlantic University, USA since 1994.Already since mid-eighties, the author was informed that the book was adopted in numerous universities worldwide. Besides complete solutions to more than one hundred problems, additional material and remarks are included as Chapter 12, bringing some ideas down to the 'number' level. It is strongly hoped that this manual will promote much wider dissemination of probabilistic methods' courses at universities, and ultimately, in engineering practice worldwide. The 3rd Edition of the textbook, , is available separately.

Dynamic Motion: Chaotic and Stochastic Behaviour
The chapters of this book were written by structural engineers. The approach, therefore, is not aiming toward a scientific modelling of the response but to the definition of engineering procedures for detecting and avoiding undesired phenomena. In this sense chaotic and stochastic behaviour can be tackled in a similar manner. This aspect is illustrated in Chapter 1. Chapters 2 and 3 are entirely devoted to Stochastic Dynamics and cover single-degree-of-freedom systems and impact problems, respectively. Chapter 4 provides details on the numerical tools necessary for evaluating the main indexes useful for the classification of the motion and for estimating the response probability density function. Chapter 5 gives an overview of random vibration methods for linear and nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The randomness of the material characteristics and the relevant stochastic models ar considered in Chapter 6. Chapter 7, eventually, deals with large engineering sytems under stochastic excitation and allows for the stochastic nature of the mechanical and geometrical properties.

The ?rst International Meeting of Advances in Robot Kinematics, ARK, occurred in September 1988, by invitation to Ljubljana, Slovenia, of a group of 20 int- nationally recognized researchers, representing six different countries from three continents. There were 22 lectures and approximately 150 attendees. This success of bringing together excellent research and the international community, led to the formation of a Scienti?c Committee and the decision to repeat the event biannually. The meeting was made open to all individuals with a critical peer review process of submitted papers. The meetings have since been continuously supported by the Jozef ? Stefan Institute and since 1992 have come under patronage of the Inter- tionalFederationforthePromotionofMechanismandMachineScience(IFToMM). Springer published the ?rst book of the series in 1991 and since 1994 Kluwer and Springer have published a book of the presented papers every two years. The papers in this book present the latest topics and methods in the kinem- ics, control and design of robotic manipulators. They consider the full range of - botic systems, including serial, parallel and cable driven manipulators, both planar and spatial. The systems range from being less than fully mobile to kinematically redundant to overconstrained. The meeting included recent advances in emerging areas such as the design and control of humanoids and humanoid subsystems, the analysis, modeling and simulation of human body motion, the mobility analysis of protein molecules and the development of systems which integrate man and - chine.

The Philosophy of Science and Engineering Design
This book discusses the relationship between the philosophy of science and philosophy of engineering, and demonstrates how philosophers of engineering design as well as design researchers can benefit from the conceptual toolkit that the philosophy of science has to offer. In this regard, it employs conceptual tools from the philosophical literature on scientific explanation to address key issues in engineering design and philosophy of engineering design. Specifically, the book focuses on assessing the explanatory value of function ascriptions used in engineering design and philosophy of technical functions; on elaborating the structure of explanation in engineering design; on assessing the role and value of design representations in engineering design and philosophy thereof; and on elaborating means for the testing of design methods. Presenting a novel and effective approach to tackling key issues in the field, philosophers of engineering and design alike will greatly benefit from this book.

Submarine Landslides and Tsunamis
Tsunamis are water waves triggered by impulsive geologic events such as sea floor deformation, landslides, slumps, subsidence, volcanic eruptions and bolide impacts. Tsunamis can inflict significant damage and casualties both nearfield and after evolving over long propagation distances and impacting distant coastlines. Tsunamis can also effect geomorphologic changes along the coast. Understanding tsunami generation and evolution is of paramount importance for protecting coastal population at risk, coastal structures and the natural environment. Accurately and reliably predicting the initial waveform and the associated coastal effects of tsunamis remains one of the most vexing problems in geophysics, and -with few exceptions- has resisted routine numerical computation or data collection solutions. While ten years ago, it was believed that the generation problem was adequately understood for useful predictions, it is now clear that it is not, especially nearfield. By contrast, the runup problem earlier believed intractable is now well understood for all but the most extreme breaking wave events.

Finite Element and Boundary Element Applications in Quantum Mechanics
This book introduces the finite element and boundary element methods (FEM & BEM) for applications to quantum mechanical systems. A discretization of the action integral with finite elements, followed by application of variational principles, brings a very general approach to the solution of Schroedinger's equation for physical systems in arbitrary geometries with complex mixed boundary conditions. The variational approach is a common thread through the book and is used for the improvement of solutions to spectroscopic accuracy, to adaptively improve finite element meshs, to develop a time-dependent theory, and also to generate the solution of large sparse matrix eigenvalue problems. A thorough introduction to BEM is given using the modelling of surface plasmons, quantum electron waveguides, and quantum scattering as illustrative examples. The book should be useful to graduate students and researchers in basic quantum theory, quantum semiconductor modeling, computational physics, mathematics and chemistry

Fluid Mechanics Aspects of Fire and Smoke Dynamics in Enclosures
This book aims at fulfilling the need for a handbook at undergraduate and starting researcher level on fire and smoke dynamics in enclosures, giving fluid mechanics aspects a central role. Fluid mechanics are essential at the level of combustion, heat transfer and fire suppression, but they are described only cursorily in most of the existing fire safety science literature, including handbooks. The scope of this handbook ranges from the discussion of the basic equations for turbulent flows with combustion, through a discussion on the structure of flames, to fire and smoke plumes and their interaction with enclosure boundaries. Using this knowledge, the fire dynamics and smoke and heat control in enclosures are discussed. Subsequently, a chapter is devoted to the effect of water and the related fluid mechanics aspects. The book concludes with a chapter on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), the increasingly popular calculation method in the field of fire safety science.

Following the advance in computer technology, the numerical technique has made signi?cant progress in the past decades. Among the major techniques available for numerically analyzing continuum mechanics problems, ?nite d- ference method is most early developed. It is di?cult to deal with cont- uum mechanics problems showing complex curvilinear geometries by using this method. The other method that can consistently discretize continuum mechanics problems showing arbitrarily complex geometries is ?nite element method. In addition, boundary element method is also a useful numerical method. In the past decade, the di?erential quadrature and generic di?erential quadraturesbaseddiscreteelementanalysismethodshavebeendevelopedand usedto solve various continuum mechanics problems. These methods have the same advantage as ?nite element method of consistently discretizing cont- uum mechanics problems having arbitrarily complex geometries. This book includes my research results obtained in developing the related novel discrete element analysis methods using both of the extended di?erential quadrature based spacial and temporal elements. It is attempted to introduce the dev- oped numerical techniques as applied to the solution of various continuum mechanics problems, systematically.

This book covers the essential topics for a second-level course in strength of materials or mechanics of materials, with an emphasis on techniques that are useful for mechanical design. Design typically involves an initial conceptual stage during which many options are considered. At this stage, quick approximate analytical methods are crucial in determining which of the initial proposals are feasible. The ideal would be to get within 30% with a few lines of calculation. The designer also needs to develop experience as to the kinds of features in the geometry or the loading that are most likely to lead to critical conditions. With this in mind, the author tries wherever possible to give a physical and even an intuitive interpretation to the problems under investigation. For example, students are encouraged to estimate the location of weak and strong bending axes and the resulting neutral axis of bending before performing calculations, and the author discusses ways of getting good accuracy with a simple one degree of freedom Rayleigh-Ritz approximation. Students are also encouraged to develop a feeling for structural deformation by performing simple experiments in their outside environment, such as estimating the radius to which an initially straight bar can be bent without producing permanent deformation, or convincing themselves of the dramatic difference between torsional and bending stiffness for a thin-walled open beam section by trying to bend and then twist a structural steel beam by hand-applied loads at one end. In choosing dimensions for mechanical components, designers will expect to be guided by criteria of minimum weight, which with elementary calculations, generally leads to a thin-walled structure as an optimal solution. This consideration motivates the emphasis on thin-walled structures, but also demands that students be introduced to the limits imposed by structural instability. Emphasis is also placed on the effect of manufacturing errors on such highly-designed structures - for example, the effect of load misalignment on a beam with a large ratio between principal stiffness and the large magnification of initial alignment or loading errors in a strut below, but not too far below the buckling load. Stability Of Structures: Elastic, Inelastic, Fracture And Damage Theories
A crucial element of structural and continuum mechanics, stability theory has limitless applications in civil, mechanical, aerospace, naval and nuclear engineering. This text of unparalleled scope presents a comprehensive exposition of the principles and applications of stability analysis. It has been proven as a text for introductory courses and various advanced courses for graduate students. It is also prized as an exhaustive reference for engineers and researchers. The authors' focus on understanding of the basic principles rather than excessive detailed solutions, and their treatment of each subject proceed from simple examples to general concepts and rigorous formulations. All the results are derived using as simple mathematics as possible. Numerous examples are given and 700 exercise problems help in attaining a firm grasp of this central aspect of solid mechanics. The book is an unabridged republication of the 1991 edition by Oxford University Press and the 2003 edition by Dover, updated with 18 pages of end notes.

Vibration Control of Active Structures: An Introduction
I was introduced to structural control by Raphael Haftka and Bill Hallauer during a one year stay at the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering department of Virginia Tech., during the academic year 1985-1986. At that time, there was a tremendous interest in large space structures in the USA, mainly because of the Strategic Defense Initiative and the space station program. Most of the work was theoretical or numerical, but Bill Hallauer was one of the few experimen talists trying to implement control systems which worked on actual structures. When I returned to Belgium, I was appointed at the chair of Mechanical Engi neering and Robotics at ULB, and I decided to start some basic vibration control experiments on my own. A little later, smart materials became widely available and offered completely new possibilities, particularly for precision structures, but also brought new difficulties due to the strong coupling in their constitutive equations, which requires a complete reformulation of the classical modelling techniques such as finite elements. We started in this new field with the sup port of the national and regional governments, the European Space Agency, and some bilateral collaborations with European aerospace companies. Our Active Structures Laboratory was inaugurated in October 1995.
