The electric power grid which has been an indispensable part of our society is being put under increasing pressure to meet the demands of a major surge in global energy consumption. As a result, the power grid needs to undergo transformations to meet the new challenges for a more sustainable society. One of these transformations is the need for continuous optimization in the smart grid so that it can react rapidly to dynamic situations in presence of fluctuating demands and uncertain renewable energy. In the past, the operations of power grid relied on careful a-priori planning, under the assumptions of static demands and predictable circumstances. In the era of dynamic smart grid, self-optimization with adaptive control is more crucial to its operations. Many of the ideas developed by the theoretical computer science community can be applied in such cases. This monograph establishes an interdisciplinary bridge between power systems engineering and theoretical computer science by relating the practical and challenging problems in electric power systems with the modern theoretical tools from computer science. The proper understanding of these hard problems in electric power systems can advance the frontiers of both communities. Electricity grids are facing significant challenges with new energy sources starting to be integrated into grids on a large scale. Distributed generation, changes in load use, and smart grid operation have each caused transformations in grid design. This monograph revisits optimal grid design problems in view of these ongoing transformations in distribution systems. The monograph describes how optimization techniques can be used to plan for a flexible electricity grid that can operate under growing uncertainty. This book gathers all papers presented at the third edition of the international conference Complex Systems Design & Management Asia (CSD&M Asia 2018), which was held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on December 6-7, 2018. Mastering complex systems requires an integrated understanding of industrial practices as well as sophisticated theoretical techniques and tools. This vision was the inspiration for creating an annual forum in the Asia-Pacific region dedicated to bringing together academic researchers & industrial actors working on architecture, modeling & engineering of complex technical & organizational systems. These proceedings cover the latest trends in the emerging field of complex systems, both from an academic and a professional perspective. Special emphasis is placed on Smart Transportation. The CSD&M Asia 2018 conference is organized under the guidance of CESAM Community which is managed by the non-profit organization CESAMES. The goal of CESAM Community is to structure the sharing of good practices in enterprise and systems architecture, and to certify the level of knowledge and proficiency in this field by means of CESAM certification.

Recently, European Space Agency has launched a new generation of SAR satellites, Sentinel-1A in 2014 and Sentinel-1B in 2016.
