Why Society is a Complex Matter: Meeting Twenty-first Century Challenges with a New Kind of Science
Society is complicated. But this book argues that this does not place it beyond the reach of a science that can help to explain and perhaps even to predict social behaviour. As a system made up of many interacting agents - people, groups, institutions and governments, as well as physical and technological structures such as roads and computer networks - society can be regarded as a complex system. In recent years, scientists have made great progress in understanding how such complex systems operate, ranging from animal populations to earthquakes and weather. These systems show behaviours that cannot be predicted or intuited by focusing on the individual components, but which emerge spontaneously as a consequence of their interactions: they are said to be 'self-organized'. Attempts to direct or manage such emergent properties generally reveal that 'top-down' approaches, which try to dictate a particular outcome, are ineffectual, and that what is needed instead is a 'bottom-up' approach that aims to guide self-organization towards desirable states. This book shows how some of these ideas from the science of complexity can be applied to the study and management of social phenomena, including traffic flow, economic markets, opinion formation and the growth and structure of cities. Building on these successes, the book argues that the complex-systems view of the social sciences has now matured sufficiently for it to be possible, desirable and perhaps essential to attempt a grander objective: to integrate these efforts into a unified scheme for studying, understanding and ultimately predicting what happens in the world we have made. Such a scheme would require the mobilization and collaboration of many different research communities, and would allow society and its interactions with the physical environment to be explored through realistic models and large-scale data collection and analysis. It should enable us to find new and effective solutions to major global problems such as conflict, disease, financial instability, environmental despoliation and poverty, while avoiding unintended policy consequences. It could give us the foresight to anticipate and ameliorate crises, and to begin tackling some of the most intractable problems of the twenty-first century.

Probability in Banach Spaces: Isoperimetry and Processes
Isoperimetric, measure concentration and random process techniques appear at the basis of the modern understanding of Probability in Banach spaces. Based on these tools, the book presents a complete treatment of the main aspects of Probability in Banach spaces (integrability and limit theorems for vector valued random variables, boundedness and continuity of random processes) and of some of their links to Geometry of Banach spaces (via the type and cotype properties). Its purpose is to present some of the main aspects of this theory, from the foundations to the most important achievements. The main features of the investigation are the systematic use of isoperimetry and concentration of measure and abstract random process techniques (entropy and majorizing measures). Examples of these probabilistic tools and ideas to classical Banach space theory are further developed.

Optimization Based Clearance of Flight Control Laws: A Civil Aircraft Application
This book summarizes the main achievements of the EC funded 6th Framework Program project COFCLUO - Clearance of Flight Control Laws Using Optimization. This project successfully contributed to the achievement of a top-level objective to meet society's needs for a more efficient, safer and environmentally friendly air transport by providing new techniques and tools for the clearance of flight control laws. This is an important part of the certification and qualification process of an aircraft - a costly and time-consuming process for the aeronautical industry. The overall objective of the COFCLUO project was to develop and apply optimization techniques to the clearance of flight control laws in order to improve efficiency and reliability. In the book, the new techniques are explained and benchmarked against traditional techniques currently used by the industry. The new techniques build on mathematical criteria derived from the certification and qualification requirements together with suitable models of the aircraft. The development of these criteria and models are also presented in the book. Because of wider applicability, the optimization-based clearance of flight control laws will open up the possibility to design innovative aircraft that today are out of the scope using classical clearance tools. Optimization-based clearance will not only increase safety but it will also simplify the whole certification and qualification process, thus significantly reduce cost. The achieved speedup will also support rapid modeling and prototyping and reduce time to market .

Adaptive Dual Control: Theory and Applications
This monograph demonstrates how the performance of various well-known adaptive controllers can be improved significantly using the dual effect. The modifications to incorporate dual control are realized separately and independently of the main adaptive controller without complicating the algorithms. A new bicriterial approach for dual control is developed and applied to various types of popular linear and nonlinear adaptive controllers. Practical applications of the designed controllers to several real-time problems are presented. This monograph is the first book providing a complete exposition on the dual control problem from the inception in the early 1960s to the present state of the art aiming at students and researchers in adaptive control as well as design engineers in industry.

Implicit Linear Systems
These notes are an introduction to implicit models of linear dynamical systems, with applications to modelling, control system design, and identification, intended for control-system engineers at the beginning graduate level. Because they are non-oriented, the models are particularly useful where causality is unknown or may change. They are implicit in all variables and closed under the algebraic operations, and hence are useful for computer-aided analysis and design. They possess the vector-matrix conceptual simplicity and computational feasibility of state-space equations, together with the generality of matrix-fraction descriptions, and admit of canonical forms for which the joint identification of system parameters and dynamic variables is linear. The notes simplify, generalize, and complement much recent work on singular or descriptor models, but do not duplicate it. Sections are included on realizations, canonical forms, minimal representations, algebraic design applications, quadratic optimization, identification, large-scale systems, and extensions to multi-dimensional and time-varying systems.

Dynamics, Bifurcations and Control
This volume originates from the Third Nonlinear Control Workshop - namics, Bifurcations and Control , held in Kloster Irsee, April 1-3 2001. As the preceding workshops held in Paris (2000) and in Ghent (1999), it was organized within the framework of Nonlinear Control Network funded by the European Union (http://www.supelec.fr/lss/NCN). The papers in this volume center around those control problems where phenomena and methods from dynamical systems theory play a dominant role. Despite the large variety of techniques and methods present in the c- tributions, a rough subdivision can be given into three areas: Bifurcation problems, stabilization and robustness, and global dynamics of control s- tems. A large part of the fascination in nonlinear control stems from the fact that is deeply rooted in engineering and mathematics alike. The contributions to this volume reflect this double nature of nonlinear control. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors and the referees for their careful work. Furthermore, it is our pleasure to thank Franchise Lamnabhi-Lagarrigue, the coordinator of our network, for her s- port in organizing the workshop and the proceedings and for the tremendous efforts she puts into this network bringing the cooperation between the d- ferent groups to a new level. In particular, the exchange and the active p- ticipation of young scientists, also reflected in the Pedagogical Schools within the Network, is an asset for the field of nonlinear control.

Mathematics of Uncertainty: Ideas, Methods, Application Problems
Mathematics of Uncertainty provides the basic ideas and foundations of uncertainty, covering the fields of mathematics in which uncertainty, variability, imprecision and fuzziness of data are of importance. This introductory book describes the basic ideas of the mathematical fields of uncertainty from simple interpolation to wavelets, from error propagation to fuzzy sets and neural networks. The book presents the treatment of problems of interpolation and approximation, as well as observation fuzziness which can essentially influence the preciseness and reliability of statements on functional relationships. The notions of randomness and probability are examined as a model for the variability of observation and measurement results. Besides these basic ideas the book also presents methods of qualitative data analysis such as cluster analysis and classification, and of evaluation of functional relationships such as regression analysis and quantitative fuzzy data analysis.

Predictive Approaches to Control of Complex Systems
A predictive control algorithm uses a model of the controlled system to predict the system behavior for various input scenarios and determines the most appropriate inputs accordingly. Predictive controllers are suitable for a wide range of systems; therefore, their advantages are especially evident when dealing with relatively complex systems, such as nonlinear, constrained, hybrid, multivariate systems etc. However, designing a predictive control strategy for a complex system is generally a difficult task, because all relevant dynamical phenomena have to be considered. Establishing a suitable model of the system is an essential part of predictive control design. Classic modeling and identification approaches based on linear-systems theory are generally inappropriate for complex systems; hence, models that are able to appropriately consider complex dynamical properties have to be employed in a predictive control algorithm. This book first introduces some modeling frameworks, which can encompass the most frequently encountered complex dynamical phenomena and are practically applicable in the proposed predictive control approaches. Furthermore, unsupervised learning methods that can be used for complex-system identification are treated. Finally, several useful predictive control algorithms for complex systems are proposed and their particular advantages and drawbacks are discussed. The presented modeling, identification and control approaches are complemented by illustrative examples. The book is aimed towards researches and postgraduate students interested in modeling, identification and control, as well as towards control engineers needing practically usable advanced control methods for complex systems.

This book contains the invited papers presented at an international sympo sium held at Schloss Elmau, Bavaria (FRG), May 4-9, 1987. Leading experts from neurobiology, medicine, physics, and the computer sciences joined to gether to present and discuss their most recent results. A particular example of the natural computational systems discussed is the visual system of man and animals. A bridge between neural networks and physical systems is provided by spin glass models of neural networks, which were also treated. Concrete realizations of new kinds of devices in microelectronics were among the further topics, as were general problems on the calculation of chaotic orbits. In this way these proceedings present a number of quite recent ap proaches to problems which are of great current interest in fields concerned with computational systems. Bringing together scientists from neurobiology, physics, and the computer sciences has been one of the main aims of the synergetics enterprise, and in particular of its international symposia, from the very beginning. For exam ple, its first meeting held in 1972 at Schloss Elmau included, among others, papers by R. Landauer and J. W. F. Woo on cooperative phenomena in data processing, by W. Reichardt on mechanisms of pattern recognition by the visual system of insects, by B. Julesz on stereoscopic depth perception, and by H. R. Wilson on cooperative phenomena in a homogeneous cortical tissue model. Whole meetings and the corresponding proceedings were devoted to these problems, e. g.

Robust Controller Design Using Normalized Coprime Factor Plant Descriptions
This monograph concerns the design of feedback controllers for multivariable linear dynamic systems. The particular approach is to consider a coprime factor description of the plant's transfer function and to represent a family of systems by perturbing the numerator and denominator. The design of controllers to robustly stabilize such a family is posed as an H? optimization problem and some explicit solutions are obtained. Similarly, procedures for reduced order modelling and controller design are derived. Finally, the results are exploited to give a systematic loop shaping control system design procedure that is assessed on several aerospace examples. The book will be appropriate for advanced undergraduate or graduate classes requiring only a first course in state-space methods. It also gives a good introduction to multivariable control and the use of H? methods.

On Moment Theory and Controllability of One-Dimensional Vibrating Systems and Heating Processes
The main concern of this book is the application of infinite moment theory to the problem of controllability of one-di- mensional vibrating systems (like strings and beams) and heating processes. Distributed as well as boundary control is considered. In the case of vibrating systems trigonometric moment pro- blems are to be investigated which is done on the basis of an abstract moment theory in Hilbert spaces. Equivalently, alsothe theory of linear operator equations on Hilbert spa- ces ( partly with unbounded operators) is applied to the problem of controllability and time-minimal controllability. In the case of heating processes exponential moment problems are to be dealt with which is done on the basis of an ab- stract moment theory in Banach spaces. Time-minimal control- lability is also treated with the aid of the theory of line- aroperator equations on Banach spaces. Some advanced knowledge in functional analyis and on partial differential equations is preassumed for a fluent reader of the book, but parts of it are also readable with basic ma- thematical knowledge (for instance, the finite-dimensional part of the introduction).

It was demonstrated that these control methods, originated by authors, not only can intensify mixing (by acoustic irradiation at low frequency), but also notably ease it (at high-frequency irradiation). This research monograph presents the updated results of the authors supplemented by other investigations conducted in USA, Germany and Great Britain. The methods for the numerical simulation of subsonic turbulent jets under acoustic excitation are described in detail, and examples are reviewed of practical applications, including reduction of turbojet engine noise and acoustic control of self-sustained oscillations in wind tunnels.

Pinning Control of Complex Networked Systems: Synchronization, Consensus and Flocking of Networked Systems via Pinning
Synchronization, consensus and flocking are ubiquitous requirements in networked systems. Pinning Control of Complex Networked Systems investigates these requirements by using the pinning control strategy, which aims to control the whole dynamical network with huge numbers of nodes by imposing controllers for only a fraction of the nodes. As the direct control of every node in a dynamical network with huge numbers of nodes might be impossible or unnecessary, it's then very important to use the pinning control strategy for the synchronization of complex dynamical networks. The research on pinning control strategy in consensus and flocking of multi-agent systems can not only help us to better understand the mechanisms of natural collective phenomena, but also benefit applications in mobile sensor/robot networks. This book offers a valuable resource for researchers and engineers working in the fields of control theory and control engineering. Housheng Su is an Associate Professor at the Department of Control Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China; Xiaofan Wang is a Professor at the Department of Automation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

Viability Theory: New Directions
Viability theory designs and develops mathematical and algorithmic methods for investigating the adaptation to viability constraints of evolutions governed by complex systems under uncertainty that are found in many domains involving living beings, from biological evolution to economics, from environmental sciences to financial markets, from control theory and robotics to cognitive sciences. It involves interdisciplinary investigations spanning fields that have traditionally developed in isolation. The purpose of this book is to present an initiation to applications of viability theory, explaining and motivating the main concepts and illustrating them with numerous numerical examples taken from various fields.

The 9th Belgian-French-German Conference on Optimization has been held in Namur (Belgium) on September 7-11, 1998. This volume is a collection of papers presented at this Conference. Originally, this Conference was a French-German Conference but this year, in accordance with the organizers' wishes, a third country, Belgium, has joined the founding members of the Conference. Hence the name: Belgian French-German Conference on Optimization. Since the very beginning, the purpose of these Conferences has been to bring together researchers working in the area of Optimization and partic ularly to encourage young researchers to present their work. Most of the participants come from the organizing countries. However the general ten dancy is to invite outside researchers to attend the meeting. So this year, among the 101 participants at this Conference, twenty researchers came from other countries. The general theme of the Conference is everything that concerns the area of Optimization without specification of particular topics. So theoretical as pects of Optimization, in addition to applications and algorithms of Opti mization, will be developed. However, and this point was very important for the organizers, the Conference must retain its convivial character. No more than two parallel sessions are organized. This would allow useful contacts between researchers to be promoted. The editors express their sincere thanks to all those who took part in this Conference. Their invaluable discussions have made this volume possible.

Dynamic Feature Space Modelling, Filtering and Self-Tuning Control of Stochastic Systems: A Systems Approach with Economic and Social Applications
The literature on systems seems to have been growing almost expo nentially during the last decade and one may question whether there is need for another book. In the author's view, most of the literature on 'systems' is either technical in mathematical sense or technical ifF engineering sense (with technical words such as noise, filtering etc. ) and not easily accessible to researchers is other fields, in particular not to economists, econometricians and quantitative researchers in so cial sciences. This is unfortunate, because achievements in the rather 'young' science of system theory and system engineering are of impor tance for modelling, estimation and regulation (control) problems in other branches of science. State space mode~iing; the concept of ob servability and controllability; the mathematical formulations of sta bility; the so-called canonical forms; prediction error e~timation; optimal control and Kalman filtering are some examples of results of system theory and system engineering which proved to be successful in practice. A brief summary of system theoretical concepts is given in Chapter II where an attempt has been made to translate the concepts in to the more 'familiar' language used in econometrics and social sciences by means of examples. By interrelating concepts and results from system theory with those from econometrics and social sciences, the author has attempted to narrow the gap between the more technical sciences such as engi neering and social sciences and econometrics, and to contribute to either side.

Geometric, Control and Numerical Aspects of Nonholonomic Systems
Nonholonomic systems are a widespread topic in several scientific and commercial domains, including robotics, locomotion and space exploration. This work sheds new light on this interdisciplinary character through the investigation of a variety of aspects coming from several disciplines. The main aim is to illustrate the idea that a better understanding of the geometric structures of mechanical systems unveils new and unknown aspects to them, and helps both analysis and design to solve standing problems and identify new challenges. In this way, separate areas of research such as Classical Mechanics, Differential Geometry, Numerical Analysis or Control Theory are brought together in this study of nonholonomic systems.
