Die Aufgabe, der sieh der Bearbeiter del' Neuauflage gegeniibersab, war fUr die einzelnen Teile des Buches durchaus versehieden. Der erste Teil, die von GROBER verfaBte W iirmeleitung in jesten K orpern, behandelte im wesentlichen die Losungsmethoden der Fouriergleichung in einem Umfange, wie er fUr die Ingenieurpraxis in den meisten Fallen aus- reichte. Es ist das besondere Verdienst von GROBER, fUr die analytische Theorie del' Warmeleitung eine dem Ingenieur zugangliche und ver- standliche Darstellungsweise gefunden zu haben, die groBtenteils schon aus del' 1. Auflage des Buches (1921) stammte. So hat denn wohl del' GROBER/ERR einer ganzen Ingenieurgeneration als Lehrbuch uber die TheOl'ie del' Fouriergleichung gedient. An diesel' Lage hatte sich nichts Grundsatzliches geandert, so daB in die Neuauflage der erste Teil im groBen und ganzen ubernommen wurde. Die GROBERschen Diagramme uber die Abkuhlung einfacher Kar- pel' wurden durch die Abbildungen naeh BAOHMANN ersetzt, ferner wur- den Kurventafeln uber die Abkiihlung von Platte, Zylinder und Kugel bei konstanter Oberflaehentemperatur aufgenommen. HinzugefUgt wur- den ferner (neben einigen Hinweisen und Reehenbeispieleri) je ein Ab- sehnitt iiber mehrdimensionalen Temperaturausgleieh und uber die Re- laxationsmethode sowie eine kurze Betraehtung u bel' elektrisehe Analogie- verfahren. Zur Aufnahme del' Laplace-Transformation konnte ieh mieh noeh nieht entsehlieBen.

Modified Cyclodextrins for Chiral Separation offers a review of the latest advances in developing modified cyclodextrins as chiral selectors for various chromatographic and electromigration techniques. Over the years, many descriptions of chiral separation have appeared in academic journals and books, but most of them have been devoted to either the development of analytical methods and protocols or the summary of different chiral selectors, including cyclodextrins for chiral separation applications. This is in marked contrast to this volume which focuses on the research endeavors concerning the development of cyclodextrin derivatives specifically as either chiral mobile phases for capillary electrophoresis, or chiral stationary phases for various chromatographic techniques including gas chromatography, or high-performance liquid chromatography and supercritical fluid chromatography. The ongoing thread in this book is the synthesis of structurally-defined cyclodextrin derivatives and their applications in enantiomer separation by means of different analytical techniques. Magnetic Functions Beyond the Spin-Hamiltonian
Using the spin-Hamiltonian formalism the magnetic parameters are introduced through the components of the Lambda-tensor involving only the matrix elements of the angular momentum operator. The energy levels for a variety of spins are generated and the modeling of the magnetization, the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity is done. Theoretical formulae necessary in performing the energy level calculations for a multi-term system are prepared with the help of the irreducible tensor operator approach. The goal of the programming lies in the fact that the entire relevant matrix elements (electron repulsion, crystal field, spin-orbit interaction, orbital-Zeeman, and spin-Zeeman operators) are evaluated in the basis set of free-atom terms. The modeling of the zero-field splitting is done at three levels of sophistication. The spin-Hamiltonian formalism offers simple formulae for the magnetic parameters by evaluating the matrix elements of the angular momentum operator in the basis set of the crystal-field terms. The magnetic functions for dn complexes are modeled for a wide range of the crystal-field strengths.

Group 13 Chemistry III: Industrial Applications
The present issue of Structure and Bonding is dedicated to applied group 13 chemistry, particularly for the elements boron and aluminum, and to a lesser degree gallium and indium. Although boron is a trace element (0.01 g kg 1) in the earth's crust, it has been concentrated in a few locations by geochemical processes and is relatively easy to mine as borax. Aluminum, on the other hand, is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust (82 g kg 1) and dispersed widely throughout the globe. Thus, boron and aluminum are readily available and their associated products or compounds are usually inexpensive and thereby easy to commercialize. The chapters were chosen to encompass both applied and fundamental aspects of their subiects. The first chapter 'Borates in Industrial Use' provides a complete, and perhaps, quintessential, coverage of compounds containing boron oxygen bonds. In the chapter Schubert explains the close relationship between the basic properties of the boron compounds and their associated uses. The remaining four chapters focus, to some degree, on aluminum. Since a great deal of literature exists in this area, these chapters are more focused on areas of emerging utility, and contain a great deal of fundamental information. Uhl's contribution in Chapter 2 provides basic synthesis and structural information for aluminum and gallium hydrazides. These types of compounds are being explored as potential molecular precursors to metal nitrides such as the important blue green laser material gallium nitride.

The French chemist Marcelin Berthelot put forward a classical and by now an often cited sentence revealing the quintessence of the chemical science: La Chimie cree son objet . This is certainly true because the largest number of molecular compounds were and are continuously synthesized by chemists themselves. However, modern computational quantum chemistry has reached a state of maturity that one can safely say: La Chimie Theorique cree son objet as well. Indeed, modern theoretical chemistry is able today to provide reliable results on elusive systems such as short living species, reactive intermediates and molecules which will perhaps never be synthesized because of one or another type of instability. It is capable of yielding precious information on the nature of the transition states, reaction paths etc. Additionally, computational chemistry gives some details of the electronic and geometric structure of molecules which remain hidden in experimental examinations. Hence, it follows that powerful numerical techniques have substantially enlarged the domain of classical chemistry. On the other hand, interpretive quantum chemistry has provided a conceptual framework which enabled rationalization and understanding of the precise data offered either by experiment or theory. It is modelling which gives a penetrating insight into the chemical phenomena and provides order in raw experimental results which would otherwise represent just a large catalogue of unrelated facts.

This volume contains the lectures and contributions presented at the International Symposium on Temporal Order held in Bremen, September 17-22, 1984. Temporal order, such as a more or less regularly repeated temporal sequence of events, can evol ve in open systems far removed from equi 1 i bri um. Progress duri ng the last decade in the analysis and the modelling of this complex phenomenon in both biological and chemical systems gave rise to the idea of a joint conference. The purpose of the symposium was to stimulate future work by enhancing the exchange of experimental and theoretical results between neighbouring disciplines. Theoretical work in general, and mathematical models in particular, provided the basis for a mutual discussion and, thus, helped to overcome difficulties in under standing the results of different experimental fields. Chemical systems, for examp le, are more rigorously controllable through their experimental conditions in com parison to biological systems, which maintain highly effective autonomous control against environmental influences. Therefore, different states such as bistability, oscillations and chaos can be defined and, hence, described better in chemical sy stems. Chemical systems may thus provide some insights into functional structures that also exist in more complex biological systems.

This book is interdisciplinary in character and combines the knowledge of me chanics and chemical engineering with the aim of presenting a more exhaustive analysis ofthe phenomena occurring in wet materials during drying. Traditionally, the subject of drying has been an almost exclusive domain of chemical engineers. The drying curricula have mostly included only the courses of heat and mass transfer or diffusion. The mechanical phenomena that accompany drying, as for example, warping or deformation of dried materials, or the drying induced stresses and fissures of the material, were ignored or considered in a rather obscure way. This book broadens the scope of drying theory, bringing into the curriculum the tools enabling the study of both heat and mass transport processes and the me chanical phenomena that occur in wet materials under drying. There is little available literature that brings together heat and mass transport processes and mechanical phenomena in a unified approach to drying processes.

45 years after the discovery of transition metals and organometallics as cocatalysts for the polymerization of olefins and for organic synthesis, these compounds have not lost their fascination. The birthday of Karl Ziegler, the great pioneer in this metalorganic catalysis, is now 100 years ago. Polyolefins and polydienes produced by Ziegler-Natta catalysis are the most important plastics and elastomers. New impulses for the polymerization of olefins have been brought about by highly active metallocenes and other single site catalysts. Just by changing the ligands of the organometallic compounds, the structure of the polymers produced can be tailored in a wide manner. In invited lectures and posters, relevant aspects of the metalorganic catalysts for synthesis and polymerization are discussed in this book.
