Introduction to Stereochemistry
CHEMISTRY STUDENT GUIDES. GUIDED BY STUDENTS Why did the drug thalidomide cause birth defects? What is the chemical difference between sucrose and lactose in your food? Stereochemistry holds the answer and is essential to the understanding of the chemistry of life. Stereochemistry is an important concept that often causes confusion amongst students when they learn it for the first time. Unlike most other areas of chemistry, it requires the chemist to visualise molecules in 3D, which can be difficult. In this book we deal with tricky concepts like conformation and configuration, how to represent them accurately and how to use the correct terms to describe them in both organic and inorganic chemistry. We involved student's in the writing process to ensure we deal with areas that you find difficult, in an understandable language. With problems designed to focus on common errors and misconceptions, real life examples, and practical hands-on exercises coupled with visualisation tips, our intention is to give you the tools to become confident in stererochemistry. Complementing mainstream organic textbooks, or self-study, this book is for anyone who has struggled with describing alkenes as E or Z, assigning R and S absolute configurations, drawing Newman projections or chair representations of cyclohexanes, axial chirality, understanding the stereochemistry of octahedral metal complexes and indeed explaining complexities observed in NMR spectra. Chemistry Student Guides are written with current students involved at every stage, guiding the books towards the most challenging aspects of the topic. Student co-authors for Introduction to Stereochemistry are Caroline Akamune, Michael Lloyd and Matthew Taylor. Extra material available online at: rsc.li/csgstereochemistry

Green Approaches in Medicinal Chemistry for Sustainable Drug Design
Green Approaches in Medicinal Chemistry for Sustainable Drug Design encourages the growth of green medicinal chemistry by supporting medicinal chemists, drug discovery researchers, pharmacologists, and those in related fields who want to integrate these approaches into their own work. After providing context to the growth of green chemistry in relation to drug discovery, the book identifies a broad range of practical techniques and useful insights, revealing how medicinal chemistry techniques can be used to improve efficiency, mitigate failure, and increase the environmental benignity of the entire drug discovery process. Extensive experimentation and high failure rates are a well-recognized downside to the drug discovery process, with the resultant high levels of inefficiency and waste producing a negative environmental impact. The book reveals how medicinal chemistry can play a direct role in addressing this issue.

Understanding Halogenation
Parkinson's disease is the second most prevalent aging-related neurodegenerative disorder. Cell death in the substantia nigra, a motor region of the nervous system, is the key factor for the emergence of motor deficits in patients, although its critical role in Parkinson's disease pathogenesis is put into question. Understanding Halogenation explores how halogenation stress could participate in neuronal damage of the nervous system and parkinsonian deficits. Following this, new insights into the C-F bonding nature of graphite fluorides with different fluorine concentrations C4F, C2F and C1F are presented. They are based on recent data from bulk techniques, which are very sensitive to the atomic local and electronic structure and C hybridization such as X-ray Raman Scattering and Pair Distribution Function analysis. Lastly, a novel bromine-containing StillaGennari-type phosphonate reagent, methyl 2-(bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)phosphoryl)-2-bromoacetate is designed, synthesized, and applied to the stereoselective construction of trisubstituted alkenes via bromomethylenation of carbonyl groups.

Apply an Omnibus of Knowledge from Leaders in the Field The unexpected diversity of topics presented at previous gatherings forced organizers of 2008's 22nd Conference on Catalysis of Organic Reactions to expand its format to reflect the remarkable current degree of specialization in the field. Catalysis of Organic Reactions contains a compilation of papers presented at the event, and subsequently, few books will be able to match the breadth and depth of its content. Featuring papers by respected scientists from academia, industry, and the governmental research-and-development sector, it covers various aspects of the production, sale, and use of catalysts for practical purposes. Articles concentrate on the general area of catalyzed synthesis, emphasizing the production of organic chemicals. With a focus on application rather than theory, the dominant theme is the traditionally practiced area of heterogeneous catalysis. Topics include: Hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis C-C coupling Amination and oxidation (including the precious metal, supported base metal, and sponge metal, Raney process, and homogeneous catalyst types) End uses of products, including industrial petrochemicals, fine chemicals, and pharma intermediates Those working with applied catalysis will benefit greatly from this consolidation of insights and reviews of the latest developments in the field. Each of the papers presented were edited by ORCS members, drawn from both academia and industry, and peer-reviewed by experts in related fields of study.
