Residue Reviews: Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology
Worldwide concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental com- munities over traces of toxic chemicals in foodstuffs and in both abiotic and biotic environments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published progress reports, and archival documentations. These three publications are integrated and scheduled to provide in international communication the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. Until now there has been no journal or other publication series reserved exclusively for the diversified literature on toxic chemicals in our foods, our feeds, our geographical surroundings, our domestic animals, our wild- life, and ourselves. Around the world immense efforts and many talents have been mobilized to technical and other evaluations of natures, locales, magnitudes, fates, and toxicology of the persisting residues of these chemicals loosed upon the world. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis has been an inescapable need for an articulated set of authorita- tive publications where one could expect to find the latest important world literature produced by this emerging area of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation.

CIS-Trans Isomeric Carotenoids Vitamins A and Arylpolyenes
The core of this little book is a survey of the experimental work carried out by our research group in the course of two decades. Although the writer has made an effort to present and evaluate related contributions of many authors, the text should not be considered as a monograph of encyclopedic character. Our experiments began with a study of cis-Irans-isomeric C - 40 carotenoids and were subsequently extended to other types of polyenes in order to determine how far the observations were applicable to broader fields. Similar considerations have led to the inclusion of the Chapters on Vitamins A and on Cumulenes although we have not contributed to the stereochemistry of these classes of compounds. The first eleven Chapters have been published in Volume XVIII of the Series, Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products and now appear in a revised, up-to-date form. Sincere thanks are due to the following former members of our research group who have participated in the experimental elucidition of the field: W. V. Bush, A. Chatterjee, L. Cholnoky, J. Dale, R. B. Escue, P. Fischer Jorgensen, Ch. Gansser, F. T. Haxo, G. Karmakar, B. K. Koe, J. Leemann, R. M. Lemmon, the late A. L. LeRosen, W. Lijinsky, K. Lunde, E. F. Magoon, W. H. McNeely, F. J. Petracek, J. Signal Processing: Course : Lectures
The two volumes of Signal Processing are based on lectures delivered during a six week program held at the IMA from June 27 to August 5, 1988. The first two weeks of the program dealt with general areas and methods of Signal Pro cessing. The problem areas included imaging and analysis of recognition, x-ray crystallography, radar and sonar, signal analysis and 1-D signal processing, speech, vision, and VLSI implementation. The methods discussed included harmonic anal ysis and wavelets, operator theory, algorithm complexity, filtering and estimation, and inverse scattering. The topics of weeks three and four were digital filter, VLSI implementation, and integrable circuit modelling. In week five the concentration was on robust and nonlinear control with aerospace applications, and in week six the emphasis was on problems in radar, sonar and medical imaging. Because of the large overlap between the various one-week and two-week seg ments of the program, we found it more convenient to divide the material somewhat differently. Part I deals with general signal process theory and Part II deals with (i) application of signal processing, (ii) control theory related themes. We are grateful to the scientific organizers: Tom Kailath (Chairman), Louis Aus lander, F. Alberto Grunbaum, J. William Helton, Pramod P. Khargonekar and Sanjoy K. Mitter. We are also grateful for the generous support given to the IMA program by the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Office and the National Security Agency.

The Soma: Unlocking the Mysteries of Mood
How should we define happiness? How happy are we supposed to be? Or can we be? Does each of us have a genetically determined normal level of happiness? Will a new breed of drugs allow us to fine-tune our moods so that we are happy most of the time? If so, are there any dangers to this kind of long-term mood alteration? Fascinating research in a range of fields is providing provocative answers to these and many more questions about what makes us happy and how we can control our moods. We are in the midst of a revolution in the understanding of how our brains work and the neural circuitry of our moods and general temperament. At the same time, we have entered a bold new age of pharmacology?the science of drugs?which is allowing drug-makers to craft molecules that are exquisitely tailored to produce desired mood-altering effects.

In a lively and stimulating narrative, acclaimed science writer Stephen Braun takes readers to the frontlines of discovery in these areas and explores how this brave new world of mood manipulation will impact our lives. Based on extensive interviews with scientists at the forefront of research, as well as the compelling stories of many individuals and their personal experiences, The Science of Happiness presents an accessible, engaging, and balanced account of what we need to know as we enter this new era.

Braun introduces us to the scientists and companies who are racing to create the next generation of Prozac-like drugs, exploring the controversy surrounding so-called designer drugs and why such drugs are likely to be even more widely used.

He presents the idea of the happiness set point ?the average level of happiness around which our daily mood fluctuates?and the respective roles played by our genes, our upbringing, and our daily life choices and experiences in determining our happiness profile. Introducing the provocative new field of Darwinian psychology, he explains why depression and anxiety can at times be necessary evils, providing important incentives for us to make changes in our lives that will improve our Darwinian fitness.

Braun also offers a stimulating and insightful consideration of how the alteration of our moods affects the self inside us. When we alter the mechanics of our moods, do we also fundamentally change ourselves? Or can we find a way to tailor our emotional lives while retaining what we consider to be the essence of who we are?

The Science of Happiness is an important and thoroughly engaging exploration of one of the most pressing issues facing society.

Entertaining and Thorough. ?Philadelphia Enquirer

Braun has a knack for interpreting the findings of medical researchers and applying them to daily life. ?Library Journal

Braun manages to take abstract concepts and mold them into something highly readable. Science novices should find this book as enjoyable and well-written as those who have spent their lives working with biology or chemistry. ?Publishers Weekly

Water Distribution System Monitoring: A Practical Approach for Evaluating Drinking Water Quality
A typical water distribution system is complex and chaotic with varying piping configurations, water flows, chemical reactions, and microbiological activity. It is therefore no surprise that monitoring water quality can be a daunting task, not to mention dealing with the devastating and costly effects of: * Noncompliance with the Lead and Copper Rule * Pinhole leaks in water service lines and private plumbing * Vulnerability to microorganisms in the water distribution system * Unwanted side effects from treatment chemicals * Mistakes in treatment chemicals and dosage amounts These common water quality issues can be avoided by routinely monitoring key water quality parameters in the distribution system in a controlled and standardized manner. While proactive monitoring costs money, having water quality problems is even more costly. Water Distribution System Monitoring: A Practical Approach for Evaluating Drinking Water Quality provides a practical step-by-step approach and open-source technology for proactive water quality management. It describes a method for routinely monitoring the water distribution system by: * Assembling a standardized monitoring station * Planning a monitoring strategy, and * Interpreting and using the water quality data Deliver safe and economical drinking water to your customers. Why wait three years to find out if the water system is in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule? Why guess which corrosion control chemical is the right one? Why guess how much disinfection is needed in the water distribution system? Optimize your chemical usage, minimize your operational expenses, and confirm that the water is safe. Laying out a path to quality control and process improvement, this book provides the tools for well-defined and measurable control of water quality.

Carbon Management:: Implications for R & D in the Chemical Sciences and Technology (A Workshop Report to the Chemical Sciences Roundtable)
Considerable international concerns exist about global climate change and its relationship to the growing use of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide is released by chemical reactions that are employed to extract energy from fuels, and any regulatory policy limiting the amount of CO2 that could be released from sequestered sources or from energy-generating reactions will require substantial involvement of the chemical sciences and technology R&D community. Much of the public debate has been focused on the question of whether global climate change is occurring and, if so, whether it is anthropogenic, but these questions were outside the scope of the workshop, which instead focused on the question of how to respond to a possible national policy of carbon management. Previous discussion of the latter topic has focused on technological, economic, and ecological aspects and on earth science challenges, but the fundamental science has received little attention. This workshop was designed to gather information that could inform the Chemical Sciences Roundtable in its discussions of possible roles that the chemical sciences community might play in identifying and addressing underlying chemical questions.

Regulation of Transcription and Translation in Eukaryotes
This volume represents the proceedings of the 24th Mos- bach Colloquium on Regulation of Transcription and Trans- lation in Eukaryotes which was held April 26-28, 1973, in Mosbach, Germany, under the auspices of the Gesellschaft fiir Biologische Chemie. To the three of us (H. KERSTEN, P. KARLSON and myself) who were commissioned with the invitation of speakers, it was a difficult decision as to whether we should attempt to cover with some twenty contributions as many aspects of this broad topic as possible, or to sacrifice the intellectually perhaps more pleasing but more specula- tive concepts and to concentrate on a few aspects of gene expression in reasonable detail. We unanimously decided on the latter course, leaving such important and timely topics as for example, hormone action, cyclic AMP and reverse transcription to the proceedings of other symposia, and con- centrating on the four questions which are most basic to an understanding of the mechanisms of transcription and trans- lation and for which fragmentary but nonetheless reliable experimental results have become available within the last few years. These are the structure of chromatin, the syn- thesis of messenger RNA, the structure of the active ribo- some, and the role of initiation factors in protein synthesis.

The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs
Records cataloging the healing powers of natural substances - plants, minerals, and animal byproducts - date back more than 4,000 years. There is no denying the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine, yet - until recently - the roots of this knowledge were largely lost in superstition and folklore. However, the use of herbs as an alternative medical treatment for many illnesses has increased steadily over the last decade, particularly since such herbs are categorized as Natural Food Products and are not yet subject to strict control by the FDA. Reports published in 1996 indicate that more than 10% of the US population has used herbal remedies. This book does not debate the value of Eastern or Western medicine but brings together Chinese herbal lore and Western scientific methods in a current, comprehensive treatise on the pharmacology of Chinese herbs. This second edition of The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs presents the chemical composition, pharmacological action, toxicity, and therapeutic value of 473 herbs. The book: Classifies herbs according to their therapeutic value Informs how active ingredients in herbs may adversely interact with other herbs or drugs Evaluates which herbs have the potential for more investigation and possible use as drugs Describes the pharmacological action of each herb based on recent scientific study and describes each herb according to Chinese pharmacopoeia and folk medicine Provides a review of Chinese medical history Presents information on how to use modern chemical techniques for enhancing or modifying herbal ingredients into better agents with more strength and activity What's New in the Second Edition Discussions on: Herbs and their specific effects on the immune system Herbs and fertility/infertility Anti-cancer herbs Anti-HIV herbs Anti-malarial herbs Ginseng and ginsenosides Anti-Alzheimer herbs Herbs affecting the nervous system

Dictionary of Chemical Names and Synonyms
Dictionary of Chemical Names and Synonyms is an important book containing essential information about more than 20,000 chemicals. The book covers chemicals on the U.S. Government's List of Lists and chemicals regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture, Department of Transportation, International Trade Commission, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Other chemicals listed include those found in the Hazardous Substances Data Bank, the Toxic Substances Control Act Test Submissions (TSCATS) database, and the Environmental Fate Databases. Significant commercial chemicals are covered, as well. Dictionary of Chemical Names and Synonyms provides critical information on the identity of chemicals and allows cross-referencing between the diverse nomenclatures used by the various scientific disciplines that deal with chemicals. In addition, over half the discrete chemicals in this book have SMILES structural notations to further assist in identifying the compound. The book is indexed in the following manner: CAS Registry Numbers Chemical names and synonyms Chemical formulas This book is critical for chemical manufacturers; industrial health and safety officers; persons responsible for disposal of chemicals; persons responsible and interested in Community Right to Know and Workers Right to Know programs; individuals responsible for ordering and receiving chemicals; persons maintaining public and academic libraries; and all persons working around chemicals or concerned with chemicals in the environment, including environmental engineers, toxicologists, industrial hygienists, and chemists. List Information Several lists have been used in this compilation to insure that all significant chemicals would be included: U.S. EPA Toxic Substances Control Act Test Submissions U.S. EPA Environmental Fate Data Base National Library of Medicine's ChemID SUPERLIST NLM Hazardous Substances Data Bank FATE/EXPOS file National Toxicology Program's tested and considered chemicals

Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants
Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants provides a comprehensive discussion of mathematical models used to anticipate and predict the consequences and fate of natural and applied chemicals. The book evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for application of numerous models used throughout the world. It examines the theoretical support and need for experimental calibration for each model. The book also reviews world literature to discuss such topics as the movement of sorbed chemicals by soil erosion, the movement of reactive and nonreactive chemicals in the subsurface and groundwater, and salt transport in the landscape. Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants is an important volume for environmental scientists, agricultural engineers, regulatory personnel, farm managers, consultants, and the chemical industry.

Heavy Metals Release in Soils
Understanding the mechanisms associated with metal complexes and the sequestering metal contaminants in the environment is essential for effective remediation. Heavy Metal Release in Soils describes and quantifies desorption/release kinetics and dissolution reactions in the release of heavy metals from soil. The book focuses on: New techniques - microscopic surface techniques, NMR and electrophoresis, XAFS, SFM, and time-resolved ATR-FTIR Theoretical analysis and kinetic approaches - adsorption/desorption hysteresis, competitive sorption and transport, multi-component models, speciation kinetics, isotherms and soil and metal parameters, and the role of soil properties on transport Applications - arsenic speciation and mobility in contaminated soils, modeling activity of CD, Zn, and Cu in contaminated soils, and in situ chemical immobilization A timely addition to the literature, this book highlights the desorption/release mechanisms for the purpose of resolving remediation dilemmas in contaminated environments. It gives you the added advantage of case studies at both the microscopic and macroscopic scales, and provides both experimental and numerical investigations. With contributions from an international panel of authors, Heavy Metals Release in Soils fills a gap in the current literature concerned with subsurface contaminant fate and transport processes.

Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants, Volume IV: Plants in Indian Medicine
This fourth volume of The Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants lists more than 12,000 common names in 100 languages, dialects and regions for over 1900 plants used in Indian medicine. Both scientific and common names of medicinal plants are cross indexed to each other. Languages of the common names are included. The Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants, Volume IV, stands alone; it does not repeat any of the common names of the previous volumes and it references all scientific names for the plants without recourse to the previous volumes. The need for this book was prompted by the diversity of the common names of the plants. Each language, and sometimes each country with the same language, may have a different name for a given plant (and often many names for the same plant). This difference in terminology has caused confusion and inhibited the scientific study of plant medicinals. This volume was compiled as a tool to help unravel the medical botany literature and to aid researchers in their quest to tap into the vast literature which records pragmatic experimentation in botanical medicine, whether medical, folkloric or magical.
