Clinical Microbiology for Diagnostic Laboratory Scientists
A modern, evaluative, and integrative approach to diagnostic microbiology encouraging problem-solving in the clinical laboratory context through the use of examples to illustrate clinical and diagnostic issues Clinical Microbiology for Diagnostic Laboratory Scientists is designed to encourage readers to develop a way of thinking that can be applied to any diagnostic scenario in microbiology. Through consideration of a selected range of infections caused by pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and helminths, the book encourages readers to explore connections between the available information about clinical symptoms, pathogenesis of infections, and the approaches used in laboratory diagnosis, in order to develop new insights. The book begins with an introductory chapter that outlines the scope of clinical diagnostic microbiology and the key areas for the laboratory scientist to be aware of. The subsequent six chapters review a type of infection in depth, using particular pathogenic microorganisms to illustrate salient points. At the end of each chapter there are three exercises related to management of a diagnostic service and assessing the suitability of test methods to specific contexts. There are no right or wrong answers to these, but the reader can discuss them with their laboratory colleagues or university tutor. Makes extensive use of published research in the form of journal articles, publically available epidemiological data, professional guidelines, and specialist websites Stimulates the reader in critical appraisal of published evidence and encourages problem-solving in the laboratory Outlines the scope of clinical diagnostic microbiology and the key areas for the laboratory scientist to be aware of Considers topics relevant to professional scientists working in the area of diagnostic microbiology Clinical Microbiology for Diagnostic Laboratory Scientists is ideal for post graduate scientists intending to pursue careers in diagnostic clinical microbiology and for biomedical scientists, clinical scientists, and full time students studying for upper level qualifications in biomedical science, microbiology, or virology.

The Immune System: A Very Short Introduction
The immune system is central to human health and the focus of much medical research. Growing understanding of the immune system, and especially the creation of immune memory (long lasting protection), which can be harnessed in the design of vaccines, have been major breakthroughs in medicine. In this Very Short Introduction, Paul Klenerman describes the immune system, and how it works in health and disease. In particular he focuses on the human immune system, considering how it evolved, the basic rules that govern its behaviour, and the major health threats where it is important. The immune system comprises a series of organs, cells and chemical messengers which work together as a team to provide defence against infection. Klenerman discusses these components, the critical signals that trigger them and how they exert their protective effects, including so-called < innate> immune responses, which react very fast to infection, and < adaptive> immune responses, which have huge diversity and a capacity to recognise and defend against a massive array of micro-organisms. Klenerman also considers what happens when our immune systems fail to be activated effectively, leading to serious infections, problems with inherited diseases, and also HIV/AIDS. At the opposite extreme, as Klenerman shows, an over-exaggerated immune response leads to inflammatory diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, as well as allergy and asthma . Finally he looks at the < Immune system v2.o> - how immune therapies and vaccines can be advanced to protect us against the major diseases of the 21st century. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology: Definitions, Criteria, and Explanatory Notes
The first edition of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology was published in 2010 and has greatly influenced the practice of thyroid cytopathology. The terminology proposed and illustrated in this text has been widely adopted not only in the U.S. but also abroad. It has become an essential text for pathology trainees and practicing pathologists examining thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. Since 2010, there have been a number of important advances in the management of patients with nodular thyroid disease and in the understanding of the biology of thyroid cancer. This new edition includes these advances that impact terminology for reporting thyroid cytopathology. In particular, it incorporates a discussion of the recently implemented and now widespread use of molecular testing of thyroid FNA samples, which has transformed the management of patients with nodular thyroid disease in the U.S.. In addition, this edition accommodates the recent changes to the classification of thyroid cancer, most notably the introduction of a new thyroid diagnosis, that of non-invasive follicular tumor with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) . Thoroughly revised and updated, The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology, Second Edition will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It serves as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

Rare Tumors of the Thyroid Gland: Diagnosis and Who Classification
This book documents the most important clinicopathological features of rare thyroid tumours with an emphasis (and ample documentation) on their histological and immunohistochemical aspects. Whenever necessary, namely for differential diagnosis and/or therapy purposes, molecular data are also highlighted. In order to understand the histogenesis of rare lesions and to be able to make a differential diagnosis, the editors use the WHO book for endocrine tumours (in preparation) as a framework for classifying thyroid tumours. In addition to characterizing the main histotypes of thyroid tumours, this book also provides detailed information on how to approach the diagnosis of tumours according to the major morphological/immunohistochemical characteristics, the predominant morphology and whether or not they are hereditary. This book is a valuable learning tool for those involved in the differential diagnosis of thyroid lesions.
