Practical Biostatistics in Translational Healthcare
There is an ever-increasing emphasis on evidence-based medicine that is distinguished by systematic crafting of the patient-centered research question, detailed literature searches, and careful appraisal of the resulting evidence. The consensus that ultimately emerges must then be applied in specific clinical settings, and it is to this process that translational effectiveness analysis refers. This portable and easy-to-use handbook is intended as a practical teaching guide on translational effectiveness for students and clinicians. Specifically, it will serve as a primer on patient-centered outcomes research methodology in the health sciences and explain how to acquire and understand the fundamental data that determine which reports are valued as the best available evidence. It presents an accessible and readily intelligible set of principles which doctors, dentists, nurses, and insurance carriers will be able to use in the process of health care-related decision-making.

The Art and Science of Personalising Care with Older People with Diabetes
This unique book is intended for all health professionals caring for older people with diabetes such as specialist and general nurses, doctors, primary care practioners and dieteticians. Although there is an increasing body of work about personalised care, no publications were identified that encompass the focus and scope of the proposed book. The global population is ageing and increasing age is a key risk factor for diabetes. Older people with diabetes are often vulnerable, have complex care needs and often have cognitive changes, which makes personalising care challenging for health professionals. Thus, this is an internationally relevant book filling a gap in the current literature. This is a practical and updated book that will use an engaging and easy to read narrative style. It challenges readers to reflect in and on their practice. It encompasses people with diabetes' and authors' stories, which are known to have a special interest to readers, make it easier to apply the information to practice, enhance learning, and hence the relevance and value of the book. It is relevant to advocacy organisations as well as managers and service planners. Researchers and scientists may find relevant information on grant and ethics applications, research protocols, plain language statements for potential participants and operationalising research protocols.

Life Care Planning and Case Management Handbook
Life care planning is an advanced collaborative case management specialty practice focused on assessing, evaluating, coordinating, consulting, planning for, and monitoring necessary services for individuals with complex medical care needs over their lifetime. This handbook provides a comprehensive resource for all people involved with catastrophic impairments and chronic medical care case management. The Life Care Planning and Case Management Handbook, Fourth Edition, begins by defining the roles played by each of the key team members working with the life care planner. It provides planners with insights critical to successful interactions with medical and health care-related professionals as well as the team members they are most likely to encounter as they work to build an accurate and reliable life care plan. Next, the text offers up-to-date information on the medical conditions most frequently encountered by the life care planner. The contributors, who are recognized experts in their disciplines, also address issues in forensic settings, ethics, standards, research, and credentials. The fourth edition includes numerous chapters on general issues, as well as updated standards of practice from the International Academy of Life Care Planners (IALCP), Life Care Planning Consensus Statements, and valuable step-by-step charts and checklists. Completely updated and expanded, this revised handbook now includes new chapters on multicultural considerations in life care planning, admissibility of life care plans in U.S. courts, and Canadian life care planning practice. Additionally, infused in other chapters, is new information on medical coding and costing for life care planners, life care planning in non-litigated contexts, as well as research and education within life care planning.

Care Planning: A guide for nurses
This clear and intuitive introduction to care planning for nurses explains the benefits of holistic, individualised care planning from a professional and clinical perspective. Using the ASPIRE model, it guides the reader step-by-step through a problem-solving approach to care, from assessing patients and identifying their needs, to planning goals and interventions, and evaluating progress. The book is structured to explain the theory of care planning in relation to a number of common nursing models and then show how the theory can best be put into practice. It draws on recent research to show how nurses can develop individualised care plans from scratch or use and adapt a range of `off-the-shelf' tools. It is written in a clear, succinct and down-to-earth writing style, which will put students immediately at their ease, and is rich with pedagogic features, including: `Stop and think' boxes to check understanding; boxed `Practice examples' to illustrate points made; `Research summary' boxes to highlight relevant and important studies; `What have you learnt so far?' features to recap on key points of discussion; mini care plans; regular activities to encourage the reader to apply what they have learnt to particular practice scenarios. This is a go-to text for all pre-registration nursing students taking courses on the theory and practice of effective healthcare delivery.

Multidisciplinary Management of Eating Disorders
This Handbook is an indispensable guide for the multidisciplinary management of eating disorders. It discusses a broad range of issues: managing high-risk patients, the challenges of inserting feeding tubes, addressing nutritional aspects and dealing with additional disorders which might complicate matters, such as diabetes, coeliac disease and cystic fibrosis. It discusses fertility, pregnancy, and eating disorders in children and adolescents, as well as addressing the needs of families. Chapters contain key checklists and flow diagrams. Abundant pictures and conversations, coloured diagrams, charts, maps and boxes, support readers' varying learning styles and assist retention of key points. Vignettes taken from real (but strenuously anonymised) cases appeal to clinicians' preference for case-based learning. The book also functions as a practical manual of `What to do - and what NOT to do' with practical scenarios. In the acute situation, clinicians will be able to go directly to the relevant chapter to guide the team through the `when, where, how, why and with whom' of assessing and managing patients with eating disorders. The book is primarily aimed at postgraduate physicians managing patients with Eating disorders on Gastrointestinal, Endocrine or general medical wards, and those who seek to deepen their expertise as they sit higher professional examinations. It is of interest to both medical and psychiatric clinicians, as well as useful to nursing and multidisciplinary staff who want to develop a compassionate understanding of the true pain driving their patients' behaviours.

The History of Nursing and Nurses of Long Ago
Medicine in ancient times was associated with magic and the supernatural, but it was within monastic hospitals that nursing as we know it today really began. With the Reformation, nursing became increasingly secularised, and was generally considered a low-status job until high standards of professional nursing were established by Florence Nightingale. Nursing continued to advance with the work of many other nursing pioneers and reformers, and their stories will continue to inspire the nurses of today and of the future.

Being a Nurse: A personal guide from graduation to revalidation
Being a Nurse will help both student nurses and newly qualified nurses in their progression from graduation to revalidation. Packed full of personal accounts, hints and tips, the book provides advice to new starters on dealing with the challenges of being a nurse. It covers important topics such as first-day nerves, the value of teamwork, how to avoid burnout, coping with a bad day and how to know when you're ready to progress. The author takes a jargon-free, supportive approach that aims to help you develop your confidence as a nurse so that you in turn can offer the best care for your patients. Lauren Philpott recently qualified as a registered nurse and has drawn on her own experience to write `the book I wish I'd had'. In the words of one reviewer, `it's like she's taking you by the hand and helping you through the transition that she went through herself'. It takes a special sort of person to be a nurse and, of course, starting a new career can be a daunting prospect for anyone - this book will prepare you for the transition from student to registered nurse and help you make the most of your time as a newly qualified nurse.

Consumer demand for integrative medicine has increased over recent decades, and cutting-edge research in neuroscience has identified opportunities for new treatment options. This text outlines the evidence behind mind-body medicine and provides rich case-based examples.. It is written by a clinician, for clinicians, to help practitioners stay current in this emerging field. Including foundational chapters on the relevance of mind-body medicine, the effects of stress, communication skills, and methods for incorporating mind-body medicine into consultation, this book then introduces various mind-body therapies and considers their use in selected clinical conditions. The therapies are grouped into chapters on breath work and relaxation; hypnosis and guided imagery; meditation, mindfulness, spirituality, and compassion-based therapies; creative arts therapies; and movement therapies. Each chapter includes case studies, background and history, best use, training requirements, risks and benefits. The part focusing on specific conditions updates research and provides pediatric and adult examples in the areas of: anxiety and depression; acute and chronic pain; gastrointestinal and urologic conditions; auto-immune, inflammatory; and surgery, oncology, and other conditions. Providing resources and practical tools to help clinicians incorporate evidence-based mind-body medicine therapies into patient care, this book is an invaluable reference for medical and nursing students, as well as for residents, fellows, nurse practitioners and physician assistants across a wide variety of specialties.

Quality Cancer Care: Survivorship Before, During and After Treatment
Maintaining quality and improving cancer care does not occur in a vacuum. It requires a coordinated effort among many team members to whom this book is directed. Cancer care in the United States is in crisis as per a recent National Institute of Health publication. Much of this has to do with the complexity of the cancer care, its delivery systems, the aging population and the diminishing workforce. We need to be smarter and more efficient to de-escalate this crisis and improve the survival and survivorship of our cancer patients. Improved survivorship of families and caregivers will be included as well. The book will follow the continuum of cancer care model as its outline vide infra. It will provide many concrete instances of successful practices and programs which improve survivorship. Initially it will discuss the current crisis on a global and then national platform. There will be a discussion about disability adjusted life years lost, lost productivity, loss of life and its impact upon the nation and communities. The financial impact of cancer on society and government will be included in this. Population health management as regards cancer will then look at communities served, community health needs assessments and social determinants of health. How prevention and screening programs can be formulated from the above will be illustrated. Compliance with treatments as promulgated by the Commission on Cancer's Cancer Program Practice Performance Reports (CP3R) will be reviewed. The relationship between compliance and improved survival will be highlighted. Navigation and distress management to assure patients complete planned treatments will be included in this section. Quality of survivorship will review the four domains of life- spiritual, social, psychological and physical. How these can be maximized through system improvement and program development will be illustrated. Financial issues and legal protections will also be included in this section. Survivorship care planning i.e. surveillance for recurrent cancer, prevention of related and new cancers will be an integral part of this section. Palliative, end of life care and bereavement care will complete the continuum cycle. Identifying hospitalized patients in need of palliative needs will be refreshed. How to establish an in-patient palliative care team and creating a seamless transition from in-patient to out-patient palliative care will be presented. Intended AudienceAdministrative and clinical staff involved in the delivery of cancer care including: hospital executives, physicians, nurses, radiation therapists, psychology counselors, social workers, physical therapists, occupation therapists, nutritionists, government, healthcare insurance representatives, etc.

Suicide Prevention: A Practical Guide for the Practitioner
This volume is a guide for the hospital workforce related to suicide prevention. Written by experts in the field, this text is the only one that also includes the revised DSM-5 guidelines. It is also the first to cover both prevention in one concise guide, offering a well-rounded approach to long- and short-term prevention. The book begins by establishing the neurobiology of suicide before discussing the populations at risk for suicide and the various environments where they may present. The book addresses the epidemiology, including groups at heightened risk; etiology, including several types of risk factors; prevention, including large-scale community-based activities; and postvention, including the few evidence-based approaches that are currently available. Unlike any other text on the market, this book does not simply focus on one particular demographic; rather, the book covers a wide range of populations and concerns, including suicide in youths, racial minorities, patients suffering from serious mental and physical illnesses, psychopharmacological treatment in special populations, and a wide array of challenging scenarios that are often not addressed in the very few up-to-date resources available. Suicide Prevention is an outstanding resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, hospitalists, primary care doctors, nurses, social workers, and all medical professionals who may interface with suicidal patients.

Caring for the Ventilator Dependent Child: A Clinical Guide
This book is an important new resource for clinicians caring for ventilator dependent children, who often have complex health care needs, are supported by advanced technology and are at high-risk of serious complications. Despite the complicated health care needs of children who rely on chronic respiratory support, there are few guidelines and little evidence available to guide the clinicians who care for these patients. This book covers the many aspects involved in the care of these complex children, with input from experts in the fields of pediatric pulmonology, intensive care, ethics, respiratory therapy, and nursing. In depth chapters provide an introduction to the use of chronic invasive and non-invasive ventilation in children and describe and review what is known about methods of delivering ventilator support, care of the chronically ventilated patient in the community , use of chronic ventilator support in patients with disorders commonly leading to respiratory failure and outcomes for patients and their caregivers. This book is intended to be useful not only for pediatric pulmonologists, but also for intensivists, cardiologists, physical medicine/rehabilitation specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists and the primary care physicians involved in the complexities of managing care for this unique group of special needs children.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER *BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week* An astonishing memoir about nursing and an urgent call for compassion and kindness `It made me cry. It made me think. It made me laugh. It encouraged me to appreciate this most underappreciated of professions more than ever' Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt `A remarkable book about life and death and so brilliantly written it makes you hold your breath' Ruby Wax Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years. Taking us from birth to death and from A&E to the mortuary, The Language of Kindness is an astounding account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness. We watch Christie as she nurses a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, we stand by her side during her patient's agonising heart-lung transplant, and we hold our breath as she washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive. In our most extreme moments, when life is lived most intensely, Christie is with us. She is a guide, mentor and friend. And in these dark days of division and isolationism, she encourages us all to stretch out a hand. `It is very hard to describe the essence of nursing but Christie's story captures it. Through her powerful writing the true value of the nurse becomes clear' Janet Davies, Chief Executive and General Secretary, Royal College of Nursing
