Tuesdays With Morrie: An old man, a young man, and life's greatest lesson
Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying of ALS - or motor neurone disease - MItch visited Morrie in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final 'class': lessons in how to live. TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.

Brain Wash: Detox Your Mind for Clearer Thinking, Deeper Relationships and Lasting Happiness
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Grain Brain and his physician son explore how modern culture threatens to rewire our brains and damage our health, offering a practical plan for healing. Contemporary life provides us with infinite opportunities, along with endless temptations. We can eat whatever we want, whenever we want. We can immerse ourselves in the vast, enticing world of digital media. We can buy goods and services with the touch of a button or the swipe of a finger. But living in this 24/7 hyper-reality poses serious risks to our physical and mental states, our connections to others and even to the world at large. Brain Wash builds from a simple premise: Our brains are being gravely manipulated, resulting in behaviours that leave us more lonely, anxious, depressed, distrustful, illness-prone and overweight than ever before. Based on the latest science, the book identifies the mental hijacking that undermines each and every one of us and presents the tools necessary to think more clearly, make better decisions, strengthen bonds with others and develop healthier habits. Featuring a 10-day boot camp program, including a meal plan and 40 delicious recipes, Brain Wash is the key to cultivating a more purposeful and fulfilling life. 'By showing us how to consciously rewire our brains for connection, compassion, and better decisions, Brain Wash provides a framework for reclaiming joy and health in the modern world.' - Deepak Chopra, author of Metahuman 'Brain Wash reveals how our day-to-day decisions are deeply influenced and actively manipulated by the modern world. But more importantly, it is a powerful manual that allows each of us to reclaim control of our choices and make better decisions that will pave the way for health and happiness. While we generally know what's best for ourselves, acting on this knowledge is a constant struggle. Brain Wash allows us to turn this knowledge into action. I highly recommend this innovative book.' - Daniel G. Amen, MD, founder, Amen Clinics and author of The End of Mental Illness

Life in the Fasting Lane: The Essential Guide to Making Intermittent Fasting Simple, Sustainable, and Enjoyable
Take the guesswork (and fear) out of fasting with real-life and expert advice about the number-one diet trend. Over the last decade, intermittent fasting--restricting calorie intake for a proscribed number of hours for a set number of days--has become increasingly popular. While some in the medical community initially dismissed the idea as a dangerous fad, in recent years researchers have validated the safety of fasting for weight loss, and found compelling evidence that it offers wide-ranging health benefits, including lowering blood pressure; reducing risk factors for diabetes, cancer, and other diseases; promoting longevity; and increasing cognitive function. However, many people aren't sure how to incorporate fasting into their daily routine. What are best practices? Do you need to fast every day? What do you eat on non-fasting days? How can you fast when your family doesn't? What if you're a person who gets hungry after not eating for a few hours? In this essential guide, Dr. Jason Fung, Megan Ramos, and Eve Mayer address common questions and offer practical advice for integrating beneficial periods of food restriction into daily life. They set three initial goals: Start Your Fasting Engine, Find Your Fasting Lane, and Win the Race. Each goal is broken down into ten manageable steps that can be taken at your individual pace. Love breakfast? Then it may take a little while to get used to not eating it. Already skip it? Jump ahead to restricting lunch. Fung, Ramos, and Mayer know every person's physiological and psychological response to food restriction is different, and they're here to help you find the tools and strategies that will work best for your life. Combining Mayer and Ramos' years of personal experience with Dr. Fung's clinical experience and scientific rigor, Life in the Fasting Lane is a unique, accessible, and life-changing guide to developing a sustainable and beneficial fasting routine.

A compassionate and important book' Joe Lycett 'Perfect for resetting a glum January mindset' Alexandra Heminsley 'My kind of role model' Ben Fogle Divorced and struggling with deep-rooted mental health problems, Bella Mackie ended her twenties in tears. She could barely find the strength to get off the sofa, let alone piece her life back together. Until one day she did something she had never done of her own free will - she pulled on a pair of trainers and went for a run. That first attempt didn't last very long. But to her surprise, she was back out there the next day. And the day after that. She began to set herself achievable goals - to run 5k in under 30 minutes, to walk to work every day for a week, to attempt 10 push-ups in a row. Before she knew it, her mood was lifting for the first time in years. In Jog On, Bella explains with hilarious and unfiltered honesty how she used running to battle crippling anxiety and depression, without having to sacrifice her main loves: booze, cigarettes and ice cream. With the help of a supporting cast of doctors, psychologists, sportspeople and friends, she shares a wealth of inspirational stories, research and tips that show how exercise often can be the best medicine. This funny, moving and motivational book will encourage you to say 'jog on' to your problems and get your life back on track - no matter how small those first steps may be.

Go on a fascinating scientific and spiritual journey in this eye-opening book that explores the body's incredible ability to heal itself - perfect for fans of Deepak Chopra and Anita Moorjani. When we receive diagnoses from medical professionals, we are often so overwhelmed that we give up authority over our own health and wellbeing. But the truth is, we have more control over our health and life that we have been led to believe, and that belief is at the core of our body's capacity to heal itself. Based on the groundbreaking documentary of the same name, director Kelly Noonan Gores follows two people on their healing journeys, while combining science-backed research and real-world testimonials from experts like Marianne Williamson, Bruce Lipton, Deepak Chopra, Bernie Siegel, Anita Moorgani, Kelly Brogan, and many others, to offer hope and alternative treatments for the many people suffering from a variety of chronic illnesses. By identifying the emotional roots of illnesses, we can tap into the body's healing powers and discover that although healing can be complex and deeply personal, it can also happen spontaneously in a moment. Heal shows us that science and spirituality are united and demonstrates that our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions have a huge impact on our overall health and the ability to recover from illness and injury.

Readings in Sexualities from Africa
Images and stories about African sexuality abound in today's globalized media. Frequently old stereotypes and popular opinion inform these stories, and sex in the media is predominately approached as a problem in need of solutions and intervention. The authors gathered here refuse an easy characterization of African sexuality and instead seek to understand the various erotic realities, sexual practices, and gendered changes taking place across the continent. They present a nuanced and comprehensive overview of the field of sex and sexuality in Africa to serve as a guide though the quickly expanding literature. This collection offers a set of texts that use sexuality as a prism for studying how communities coalesce against the canvas of larger political and economic contexts and how personal lives evolve therein. Scholars working in Africa, the U.S., and Europe reflect on issues of representation, health and bio-politics, same-sex relationships and identity, transactional economies of sex, religion and tradition, and the importance of pleasure and agency. This multidimensional reader provides a comprehensive view of sexuality from an African perspective.

Health Care Off the Books: Poverty, Illness, and Strategies for Survival in Urban America
Millions of low-income African Americans in the United States lack access to health care. How do they treat their health care problems? In Health Care Off the Books, Danielle T. Raudenbush provides an answer that challenges public perceptions and prior scholarly work. Informed by three and a half years of fieldwork in a public housing development, Raudenbush shows how residents who face obstacles to health care gain access to pharmaceutical drugs, medical equipment, physician reference manuals, and insurance cards by mobilizing social networks that include not only their neighbors but also local physicians. However, membership in these social networks is not universal, and some residents are forced to turn to a robust street market to obtain medicine. For others, health problems simply go untreated. Raudenbush reconceptualizes U.S. health care as a formal-informal hybrid system and explains why many residents who do have access to health services also turn to informal strategies to treat their health problems. While the practices described in the book may at times be beneficial to people's health, they also have the potential to do serious harm. By understanding this hybrid system, we can evaluate its effects and gain new insight into the sources of social and racial disparities in health outcomes.

Dietary Sugar, Salt and Fat in Human Health
Divided into four main sections, Dietary Sugar, Salt and Fat in Human Health explores the biochemical, pharmacological and medicinal aspects related to the overindulgence of dietary salt, sugar, and fat, along with possible remedies. Beginning with a general overview, the text outlines aspects associated with advancing age and human physiology, such as different aspects of insulin resistance, the advancing age phenomenon, central fat accumulation and metabolic perturbations and the role of the modern Western diet and the influence of dietary sugar, salt, and fat, with particular focus on their relation to multiple biochemical pathophysiological pathways. The second section of the book focuses on the roles of dietary sugars and their correlation with the chronic disease epidemic, with an emphasis on carbohydrate metabolism and its biochemistry, GI absorption, the glycemic index and the influence of fructose. The historical background of dietary sugars is discussed alongside Atkin's hypothesis, and an overview of the correlation between dietary fibre and the glycemic index, including a chapter on sugar addiction. Section three contains an exhaustive review of the influence of dietary salt and its diverse mechanistic aspects, including salt-sensitive hypertension, contribution of two steroid receptor pathways, vascular NO, intrarenal RAAS system and angiotensin. The fourth section highlights the biochemistry of dietary saturated, polyunsaturated and trans fat and its influence on human health and various diseases, and further explores NAFLD and gender specific problems. Chapters in this section also investigate the benefits of the Mediterranean diet as well as myths related to cholesterol. Collected and carefully organized for researchers in nutrition, physiology, epidemiology, or sensory science, this book will also benefit general practitioners, surgeons, nurses, health professionals and practitioners, and students studying the role of diet in cardiometabolic disorders and disease.

Know Your Blood, Know Your Health: Prevent Disease and Enjoy Vibrant Health through Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis
A guide to accurate, individualized blood test analysis for improving personal health and avoiding disease * Explains the differences between conventional lab reference ranges for blood tests and functional analysis and why the difference is important to your health * Reveals what healthy blood should look like and the critical markers that signal the very beginnings of a health problem, including thyroid dysfunction and inflammation * Provides recommendations for bringing blood markers back to an optimal healthy range through diet and supplementation Your blood holds the clues you need to maintain vibrant health. Yet a standard blood lab panel--the most widely used diagnostic tool in Western medicine--may not reveal subclinical imbalances or the earliest beginnings of disease. Your lab work results may come back normal, even though you have lingering symptoms of allergies, pain, headaches, fatigue, inflammation, depression, food cravings, PMS, or gas and bloating. This is because the reference ranges, to which you are being compared, are gathered from sources such as textbooks, averages based on outdated guess-work, or a small number of people who aren't even well. You could be a tenth of a point away from a disease pattern, but diagnostic protocol won't sound the alarm until you are lab high on a particular test. In Know Your Blood, Know Your Health, Kristin Grayce McGary explains the benefits of a Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis (FBCA), which looks at far more markers than standard blood tests and interprets your results against healthy ranges. Using real-life stories and examples, the author explains the basics of healthy blood and how a functional blood test provides a baseline for personal health and a powerful tool for disease prevention. You will learn what is meant by a standard Complete Blood Count (CBC), find clues to strengthen your immune system, and discover which markers indicate inflammation. McGary details what different reference ranges mean and highlights the importance of a full thyroid panel for women. She reveals how health issues such as insulin resistance, high cholesterol, and anemia have specific patterns in blood chemistry. She also provides recommendations for bringing markers back to an optimal healthy range through diet and supplementation and offers a road map to using your unique blood chemistry to design a customized healthcare plan to optimize your health.

It's All in Your Mouth: Biological Dentistry and the Surprising Impact of Oral Health on Whole Body Wellness
Understanding the critical relationship between your teeth, your microbiome, and natural immunity against chronic disease Our mouths are not just for smiling, our teeth are involved in more than merely chewing, and our tongues do far more than taste and swallow. In fact, the mouth cavity is a critical ecosystem and central to the health of the entire body. This view of dentistry is central to European biological medicine but is considered radical in the United States where conventional dental practices view the mouth as an isolated entity. In It's All in Your Mouth, Dr. Dominik Nischwitz brings this sensible and crucial view of oral health to an American audience. A diseased mouth will lead to a diseased body. In fact, inflammation, chronic fatigue, obesity, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer all have roots in the mouth. Using the latest scientific research, Dr. Dominik Nischwitz tells us everything we never knew about our teeth and how we can care for them in a way that nurtures and supports whole body wellness.

Tiny You: A Western History of the Anti-Abortion Movement
Tiny You tells the story of one of the most successful political movements of the twentieth century: the grassroots campaign against legalized abortion. While Americans have rapidly changed their minds about sex education, pornography, arts funding, gay teachers, and ultimately gay marriage, opposition to legalized abortion has only grown. As other socially conservative movements have lost young activists, the pro-life movement has successfully recruited more young people to their cause. Jennifer L. Holland explores why abortion dominates conservative politics like no other cultural issue. Looking at anti-abortion movements in four western states since the 1960s-turning to the fetal pins passed around church services, the graphic images exchanged between friends, and the fetus dolls given to children in school-she argues that activists made fetal life feel personal to many Americans. Pro-life activists persuaded people to see themselves in the pins, images, and dolls they held in their hands and made the fight against abortion the primary bread-and-butter issue for social conservatives. Holland ultimately demonstrates that the success of the pro-life movement lies in the borrowed logic and emotional power of leftist activism.

Alzheimer's Disease and Infectious Causes: The Theory and Evidence
With the recent discovery that amyloid beta protein, the cause of plaques in Alzheimer's disease, is an antimicrobial peptide produced in response to infection, many researchers are focusing on the role infection plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Brain studies have also identified a number of different viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa in the postmortem brain specimens of Alzheimer's patients. Infection (particularly chronic, latent and persistent infections) causes an immune response that leads to inflammation and brain cell degeneration, which are characteristic features of Alzheimer's disease. Sources of infection in Alzheimer's disease vary from childhood infections to gut microbes that find their way into the brain as a result of aging, leaky gut syndrome, and increased permeability of the blood brain barrier. Studies and ongoing clinical trials show that treatment of viral and bacterial infections, as well as restoring a healthy balance to the gut microbiome, can reduce disease risk and improve symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This book serves as an introduction to the human microbiome and the role that infection plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

The 4 Season Solution: A Powerful New Plan for Feeling Better, Living Well and Powering Down Our Always-on Lives

In this paradigm-shifting health book, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of The Whole30 and It Starts with Food reveals a powerful new program to help us feel happier, healthier, and less stressed. Fatigue. Burnout. Weight gain. Disease. Despite seemingly endless programs designed to help us lose weight and regain our health, readers are more overworked, overtired, and overweight than ever. In All in Good Time, Hartwig reveals the four keys of health - sleep, eat, move, connect - and explains how we can reconcile the needs of our ancient bodies with the demands and complications of modern life. Today, more than at any point in history before us, we are more disconnected from the natural world than ever. Our ancestors would have honoured the changing seasons, adjusting their sleep, eating, exercise, and socializing habits based on the light, weather, and available food options. They would have slept more in winter, traversed longer distances in summer. But we wake before the sun rises and go to bed long after it sets. We spend most of our day indoors, in artificial light conditions. We can eat tropical fruits from halfway around the world in the dead of winter. We exercise in climate controlled environments, doing the same routine year round. We connect virtually instead of emotionally and physically. We go, go, go, until we pass out, exhausted, at the end of the day, by the constant blue light of our phones. In other words, we are living in an endless summer, and it's killing us. All in Good Time provides a new, sustainable model for living more in sync with the natural rhythms of the universe. By making small but meaningful changes to each health key over the course of the year, readers will reclaim their health, regain their energy, and let go of excess weight.
