Phizzwhizzing new cover look and branding for the World's NUMBER ONE Storyteller! BOY, Roald Dahl's bestselling autobiography, is full of hilarious anecdotes about his childhood and school days, illustrated by Quentin Blake. As a boy, all sorts of unusual things happened to Roald Dahl. There was the time he and four school friends got their revenge on beastly Mrs Prachett in her sweet shop. There are stories of holidays in fishing boats, African adventures and the days of tasting chocolate for Cadbury's. You'll hear tales of horrible school bullies and the motor-car accident when Roald's nose was nearly sliced clean off . . . Roald Dahl vividly shares his memories; some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleasant. All are true.

Greek Marseille and Mediterranean Celtic Region
This unique collection of essays contains a synthesis of recent works by distinguished archaeologists and historians in their field, illuminating extensive research in the Southern Gaul and on the territory of the Greek city of Marseille. Investigating the occupation of Massalia territory before the foundation of the Greek city to the Roman period, these findings provide an overview of the diverse issues behind the circulations between Greeks from Phocaea and Celtic populations. This reflection on a key region of the Euro-Mediterranean space rests on the analysis of archaeological findings, including: urban excavations, spatial studies, analysis of necropolis, submarine remains, paleo-environmental data, and reviewing the ancient literary documentation. These new and innovative findings in Greek Marseille and Mediterranean Celtic Region will be of particular interest to both students and scholars exploring the political, economic and cultural fields of relationships between the Greek migrants and the populations they started to meet at the end of the seventh century BC.

Phantom Limb

Published on the occasion of the first solo museum exhibition in the Middle East by acclaimed sculptor Diana Al-Hadid, at the Art Gallery of NYU Abu Dhabi.

This monograph surveys the oeuvre of Syrian-American artist Diana Al-Hadid at a critical juncture in her fast-growing career. In the 10 years since her MFA, this artist has had 22 solo exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world. Already represented by a major New York gallery (Marianne Boesky), Al-Hadid has gone on to mount important solo shows in museums in Europe, and participate in major group exhibitions and biennials internationally. This catalogue marks the occasion of her first solo show in the Middle East, at the Art Gallery of NYU Abu Dhabi – a new exhibition venue dedicated to museum-quality exhibitions and scholarly, timely publications.

Three essays frame Al-Hadid’s work in contrasting perspectives. A global authority on the Northern Renaissance, Reindert Falkenburg, reflects on Al-Hadid’s piece Phantom Limb – itself rich with Renaissance allusions – through the lens of his own training as an art historian. The Guggenheim curator and scholar of Middle Eastern contemporary art Sara Raza writes about Al-Hadid’s work as it intersects with architectural history and contemporary art practices. Finally, Alistair Rider, a historian of modern sculpture, expands the discussion to review her larger practice, in particular as she connects the materiality of her work to the ephemerality of memory and history.

The Shaping of English Poetry - Volume IV: Essays on 'The Battle of Maldon', Chretien de Troyes, Dante, 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' and Chaucer
This fourth volume of essays under the title The Shaping of English Poetry consolidates the work of the previous three volumes on the great subjects of English literature in the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The Norman Conquest of England built upon the rich foundation of Anglo-Saxon England but did not destroy it; thus the present volume begins with the commemoration of English heroism in The Battle of Maldon. In the late twelfth century we encounter in Chretien de Troyes's seminal romance Le Chevalier de la Charrete a new kind of hero in Lancelot, abject and obedient before his mistress, although Chretien himself is not an uncritical admirer of the sanctity of adulterous love. Hence the importance of Dante's exposition of love in Purgatorio, XVIII, which forms a background to the essays here on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Parliament of Fowls. The volume concludes with essays on Chaucer's Knight's, Monk's and Nun's Priest's Tales, which form part of a long-term project to interpret the Canterbury Tales as a unified whole and not merely a series of fragments awaiting revision on Chaucer's death.

Hoelderlin's Dionysiac Poetry: The Terrifying-Exciting Mysteries
This book casts new light on the work of the German poet Friedrich Hoelderlin (1770 - 1843), and his translations of Greek tragedy. It shows Hoelderlin's poetry is unique within Western literature (and art) as it retrieves the socio-politics of a Dionysiac space-time and language to challenge the estrangement of humans from nature and one other. In this book, author Lucas Murrey presents a new picture of ancient Greece, noting that money emerged and rapidly developed there in the sixth century B.C. This act of monetization brought with it a concept of tragedy: money-tyrants struggling against the forces of earth and community who succumb to individual isolation, blindness and death. As Murrey points out, Hoelderlin (unconsciously) retrieves the battle between money, nature and community and creatively applies its lessons to our time. But Hoelderlin's poetry not only adapts tragedy to question the unlimited machine process of a clever race of money-tyrants. It also draws attention to Greece's warnings about the mortal danger of the eyes in myth, cult and theatre. This monograph thus introduces an urgently needed vision not only of Hoelderlin hymns, but also the relevance of disciplines as diverse as Literary Studies, Philosophy, Psychology (Psychoanalysis) as well as Religious and Visual (Media) Studies to our present predicament, where a dangerous visual culture, through its support of the unlimitedness of money, is harming our relation to nature and one another. Here triumphs a temperament guided by ancient religion and that excavates, in Hoelderlin's translations, the central god Dionysus of Greek tragedy. Lucas Murrey shares with his subject, Hoelderlin, a vision of the Greeks as bringing something vitally important into our poor world, a vision of which few classical scholars are now capable. -Richard Seaford, author of Money and the Early Greek Mind and Dionysus. Here triumphs a temperament guided by ancient religion and that excavates, in Hoelderlin's translations, the central god Dionysus of Greek tragedy. -Bernhard Boeschenstein, author of Frucht des Gewitters . Zu Hoelderlins Dionysos als Gott der Revolution and Paul Celan: Der Meridian. Lucas Murrey takes the god of tragedy, Dionysus, finally serious as a manifestation of the ecstatic scream of liberation and visual strategies of dissolution: he pleasantly portrays Hoelderlin's idiosyncratic poetic sympathy. -Anton Bierl, author of Der Chor in der Alten Komoedie. Ritual and Performativitat Hoelderlin most surely deserved such a book. -Jean-Francois Kervegan, author of Que faire de Carl Schmitt? ...fascinating material... -Noam Chomsky, author of Media Control and Nuclear War and Environmental Catastrophe.

The Monstrous World: Corporeal Discourses in Phlegon of Tralles' Mirabilia
Revenants, oracular heads, hermaphrodites, sex-changers, human-animal children, multiple pregnancies, births, body features ... This is just a sample of subjects that Phlegon of Tralles explored in the 2nd century AD in his Mirabilia . This study identifies the common motifs of Phlegon's text and determines his criterion of selection: using the cultural category of monster , it argues that Phlegon exclusively collected stories of either hybrid creatures or human record-breakers with respect to scale, size and multiplicity of their corporeal features. In this light, the Mirabilia appear to be a book on monsters and the monstrous that corresponds with a general fondness for marvels and oddities during the Roman imperial period.

Occupying Space in Medieval and Early Modern Britain and Ireland
This collection offers a range of interdisciplinary viewpoints on the occupation of space and theories of place in Britain and Ireland throughout the medieval and early modern periods. It considers space in both its physical and abstract sense, exploring literature, history, art, manuscript studies, religion, geography and archaeology. The buildings and ruins still occupying our urban and rural spaces bridge the gap between the medieval and the modern; manuscripts and objects hold keys to unlocking the secrets of the past. Focusing on the varied uses of space enriches our understanding of the material culture of the medieval and early modern period. The essays collected here offer astute observations on this theme and generate new insights into areas such as social interaction, cultural memory, sacred space and ideas of time and community.

Greek Science of the Hellenistic Era: A Sourcebook
We all want to understand the world around us, and the ancient Greeks were the first to try and do so in a way we can properly call scientific. Their thought and writings laid the essential foundations for the revivals of science in medieval Baghdad and renaissance Europe. Now their work is accessible to all, with this invaluable introduction to c.100 scientific authors active from 320 BCE to 230 CE. The book begins with an outline of a new socio-political model for the development and decline of Greek science, followed by eleven chapters that cover the main disciplines: * the science which the Greeks saw as fundamental - mathematics * astronomy * astrology and geography * mechanics * optics and pneumatics * the non-mathematical sciences of alchemy, biology, medicine and 'psychology'. Each chapter contains an accessible introduction on the origins and development of the topic in question, and all the authors are set in context with brief biographies.

Greek to GCSE: Part 1
This course was written in response to a JACT (Joint Association of Classical Teachers) survey of over 100 schools. It offers a fast-track route to GCSE for those with limited time. It is based on experience of what pupils find difficult, concentrating on the essentials and on the understanding of principles in both accidence and syntax: minor irregularities are postponed and subordinated so that the need for rote learning is reduced. It aims to be user-friendly, but also to give pupils a firm foundation for further study. The course has been tested and refined in 15 schools over the last three years. Part 1 covers the basics: the main declensions, a range of active tenses and a vocabulary of 275 Greek words to be learned. Pupil confidence is built up by constant consolidation of the material covered. After the preliminaries, each chapter concentrates on stories with one source or subject: Aesop, the Odyssey and Alexander the Great. Part 1 is self-contained, with its own reference section.
