Greater Expectations: Children Reading Writing
This book provides some challangin questions which are examined in the light of authentic classroom experience. For any learner, literacy is of crucial importance. For teachers, raising standards of literacy is a constant concern. The first two sections of the book consider two important questions: What does children's writing reveal about their reading experience and competence?, and How can teachers help children to become more careful and critical readers of their own and other people's writing. In the third section of the book these questions are put in a theoretical framework which tackles some of the more fundamental issues of culture, language diversity and gender, the relationship between oracy and literacy and how best to help children who struggle with literacy. The final section gives some practical guidance for developing a full and successful literacy curriculum. Eve Bearne is Senior Lecturer in English and Education at Homerton College, Cambridge.

Intergenerational Mobility: A Study of Social Classes in India
Discrimination and exclusion in the process of capability formation and the labor market transcend the boundaries of the current generation and spill over to successive generations as well. Though a plethora of work has been done at the international level, the area has not been the focus of Indian economic research despite social exclusion and disparity having been quite substantial in India, especially the division along caste lines. The book addresses this research gap and explores the issue of intergenerational mobility across different social classes in the Indian context, analyzing the spheres of both education and occupation. We contend that parental education and occupation have a significantly greater impact on educational attainment and occupational choice for socially excluded groups compared to the advanced groups. In the labor market, intergenerational mobility is low and most of it is lateral and not vertical, increasing the possibility of discrimination in the labor market. This book highlights the fact that the long history of social exclusion has had a lasting effect and it is very difficult to come out of this inertia.

Linguistics and Literacy
William Frawley University of Delaware Several years ago, I performed a kind of perverse experiment. I showed, to several linguistic colleagues, the following comment made by Walker Percy (in The Message in the Bottle): language is too important a problem to be left only to linguists. The linguists' responses were peculiarly predictable: What does Percy know? He's a mercenary outsider, a novelist, a psychiatrist! How can he say something like that? Now, it should be known that the linguists who said such things in response were ardent followers of the linguistic vogue: to cross disciplines at whim for the sake of explanation---any explanation. It was odd, to say the least: Percy was damned by the very people who agreed with him! Fortunately, the papers in this book, though radically interdisciplinary, do not fall prey to the kind of hypocrisy described above. The papers (from the Third Delaware Symposium on Language Studies) address the question of literacy---a linguistic problem too important to be left only to linguists--but many of the authors are not linguists at all, and those who are linguists have taken the care to see beyond the parochialism of a single discipline. The subsequent papers have been written by psychologists, linguists, anthropologists, computer scientists, and language teachers to explain the problem of how humans develop, comprehend, and produce extended pieces of informa- tion (discourses and texts).

Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice
A study guide is available for this title. Click here to download (PDF, 117KB). This is the time to think boldly about adolescent literacy. So much of what we know about adolescents and their learning has changed in the last decade, and since then both the world of education and the world at large have become very different places. Adolescent Literacy convenes a conversation among today's most important educational thinkers and practitioners to address crucial advances in research on adolescent learning, to assess which of our current practices meets the challenges of the twenty-first century, and to discover transformative ideas and methods that turn the promise of education into instructional practice. In Adolescent Literacy renowned educators Kylene Beers, Bob Probst, and Linda Rief lead twenty-eight of the most important and widely read educators across the country in a conversation about where we are in the teaching of literacy to adolescents and how best to move forward. From researchers to classroom teachers, from long-treasured voices to important new members of the education community, Adolescent Literacy includes the thoughts of central figures in the field today. Adolescent Literacy discusses the most provocative issues of our time, including: English language learners struggling readers technology in the classroom multimodal literacy compelling writing instruction teaching in a "flat world" young adult literature. Each of its chapters builds on the previous to create a unified story of adolescent literacy that will help all middle and secondary teachers and administrators envision literacy instruction in exciting new ways. In addition Adolescent Literacy'sassessment rubrics for teachers, administrators, and staff developers make it an ideal resource for schoolwide and districtwide professional development, while its accompanying study guide is perfect for small-group discussions. Now is indeed the time to create a powerful vision of how to teach adolescents. The research on their learning has reached a critical mass, modern technology has allowed them to engage in a far wider range of literate behaviors than ever before, and their world has become increasingly connected, increasingly competitive, and increasingly polarized. Read Adolescent Literacy, consider the thoughts of leading educators, and join a conversation about what it means to teach and learn in this dynamic new environment. And do it soon, because the need to turn education's promise into classroom practice has never been more urgent.

Children's Literature and Its Effects
While there have been a number of histories of children's literature, they have been mainly uncritical and look at the texts through the eyes of an adult rather than those of a child. At the same time there have been various studies dealing principally with fairy story, but these again take no account of what children really read. Nor has there been any work which systematically analyses the appeak which certain writers hold out to children. This book rederesses these imbalances. It concentrates on particular authors who are typical of their time, as well as on some of the prevailing themes, Enid Blyton, for example, is often villified, yet children continue to read her - this book tries to explain why. The idea behind the book has been to select material which genuinely appeals to children. In doing so, the author explores popular writers and themes, and explains what is in them that appears to children. Children's Literature and its Effects is a thought-provoking and revealing study of popular children's literature, which will be of immense use to teachers and parents alike in understanding children's responses to books.Cedric Cullingford is Professor of Education at the University of Huddersfield.

The Phonology Factor: Creating Balance with Beginning Readers
Every teacher knows that some children fail to learn to read in literature-based, meaning-centered classrooms. For these children, something is clearly missing...but what? Nadine Pedron and Susan Brown believe that the answer to this question is balance, made possible by explicit instruction in phonological awareness. In The Phonology Factor they show how teachers can help all children become proficient readers and writers by integrating critical phonological awareness skills into a language arts curriculum that focuses on rich, meaningful literary experiences. The practical, classroom-piloted strategies presented in this book are more effective than traditional phonics instruction, and include techniques that can be used with younger students who are at risk of failing to learn to read as well as with older students still struggling to achieve literacy.

Phonological Awareness and Primary Phonics

The book is a brief, practical guide for teachers who want or have to teach phonics. Phonological awareness and phonics are integrated so that the foundation of phonological awareness prepares students for phonics and makes the 2 areas reciprocal. In work with struggling readers, Dr. Gunning developed a system to build on what students know and teach them to analyze words independently. He also found that students need a lot of practice to become effective readers.

Phonological Awareness and Primary Phonics is a practical resource manual designed to provide step by step suggestions for assessing and instructing students in grades K-2 in phonological or phonemic awareness and phonics skills and strategies. This book provides an overview of phonological awareness and phonics, but goes far beyond that to present virtually everything a teacher might need in order to implement a high-quality, effective word analysis program.

Visual Journeys Through Wordless Narratives: An International Inquiry With Immigrant Children and The Arrival
Winner of the Literacy Research Association's 2015 Edward B. Fry Book Award Immigration is an ongoing, global phenomenon and schools and teachers in host countries must continually find new ways of working with the increasing numbers of immigrant pupils, including refugees and asylum seekers. Language and literacy are crucial for inclusion in a new context but these must be developed in spaces where these children feel safe to explore themes that resonate with their experiences; to express their understanding and to engage in intercultural exchange. Visual Journeys Through Wordless Narratives presents the exploration of response strategies to Shaun Tan's The Arrival. The inquiry was carried out in educational settings, with children from many different parts of the world, in four host countries: the UK, Spain, Italy and the USA. The findings reveal the benefits of using wordless narratives such as picturebooks and graphic novels together with visual strategies to support immigrant children's literary understandings and visual literacy. They also reveal the wealth of experiences the children bring with them which have the potential to transform educational practices.
