This ISBN is for the Enhanced Pearson eText access card. Librarians in Schools as Literacy Educators: Advocates for Reaching Beyond the Classroom
This book explores the role that librarians play within schools as literacy leaders. While librarians working in schools are generally perceived as peripheral to the educational experience, they can in fact provide significant support in encouraging children's literacy and literature learning. As the need for strong functional literacy becomes ever more important, librarians who support literacy are often invaluable in achieving various academic, vocational and social goals. However, this contribution often seems to be overlooked, with funding cuts disproportionately affecting librarians. Building on recent research from Australia, the USA and the UK, the author examines the role that librarians may play as literacy educators in schools in order to make visible their contributions to the school community. In doing so, this book urges for greater recognition and support to school libraries and their staff as valuable members of the school community.

Reading Actively in Middle Grade Social Studies: Teachers and Students in Action
Middle grade students can learn a great deal about themselves and their world by reading informative texts in social studies courses. These texts will focus on important topics in history, geography, civics, government, and economics and offer students a range of perspectives on past and present social events. But reading is a complex act, and most students need specific reading-related support to understand assigned texts in middle grade social studies courses. This book focuses on the cyclical nature of reading, the actions proficient readers engage in to understand social studies textbooks and other informational texts, and the instructional support that teachers can provide to enhance middle grade students' learning of social studies content through reading. Three associated questions will be addressed in this book: * What actions do proficient readers engage in to understand assigned course texts? * What do these actions entail, and how do they relate to each other? * What teacher-mediated practices best support middle grade students' development as proficient readers and enhance their learning of course content through reading?

Reading Planet - Votes for Women - Level 8: Fiction (Supernova)
Alice and Rose are sisters growing up in the early years of the 20th century. As far as sixteen-year-old Alice is concerned, there is no more important issue to campaign for than ensuring women get the right to vote. By contrast, her sister Rose is uncertain over whether to support the Suffragette movement that Alice is so passionate about, or to be more like her beloved Granny who believes change can only be achieved through peaceful protest. While the Suffragettes - and Alice - become involved in increasingly dangerous activities to support their cause, Rose is dealing with the effects of the start of World War I, and wondering whether she will ever get the chance to become someone who makes a difference in the world. Will both girls be able to achieve their dreams without risking their lives and going against their own beliefs? Integrating Multiple Literacies in K-8 Classrooms: Cases, Commentaries, and Practical Applications
This text gives prospective and practicing teachers a comprehensive understanding of how to teach multiple literacies in elementary arid middle school classrooms. All of the Iiteracies-dance, music, visual arts, popular culture, media, and computer technologies-are integrated with reading and writing. Balanced treatment is given to theoretical perspectives and practical applications. The text also features authentic cases written by preservice teachers, and commentaries on the cases from practitioners and university professors. The cases are designed to prepare future teachers for the PRAXIS teacher certifying exam and others offered in many states. Three theoretical chapters support the practical applications: Chapter 1 addresses the benefits of writing and analyzing cases and the specific attributes of exemplary teaching cases, and offers guidelines for teachers to author their own case narratives and questions for analyzing and discussing case issues with peers; Chapter 2 discusses the role of electronic symbol making and multiple sign systems in children's literacy and how children use symbols to receive and express meaning; Chapter 3 offers a theoretical framework that helps define and enable teachers to use the new literacies of Internet technology, and provides a strong rationale for expanding traditional definitions of literacy.
