Using FIVES for Writing: Communicating, Thinking, and Learning Effectively
Helps educators of all grades have their students meet the standards for writing competence, covering everything from constructed response paragraphs and integrated response essays to practical written expression. In The FIVES Strategy for Reading Comprehension (2016), Mary Shea and Nancy Roberts guide educators through effective reading instruction, providing a roadmap for readers of all skill levels to internalize. Now, in Using FIVES for Writing Shea and Roberts expand their technique to help students of all grades meet the standards for writing competence - covering everything from constructed response paragraphs and integrated response essays to practical written expression. Based on years of hands-on classroom experience and research, Using FIVES for Writing breaks down the steps for both reading with understanding and writing with confidence: Recognizing writing as a Fundamental life skill. Identifying all pre-writing considerations. Visualizing the plan for an ABBC paragraph. Expanding the process to an effective essay. Synthesizing information from multiple sources. The parallel processes of reading and writing are gatekeepers to student success and are essential skills for lifelong learning. It is never too late for effective instruction to make a difference in how students are able to engage in language processes - gathering ideas, drawing informed conclusions, and expressing their own thinking - but there is never a better time to start than now.

Librarians in Schools as Literacy Educators: Advocates for Reaching Beyond the Classroom
This book explores the role that librarians play within schools as literacy leaders. While librarians working in schools are generally perceived as peripheral to the educational experience, they can in fact provide significant support in encouraging children's literacy and literature learning. As the need for strong functional literacy becomes ever more important, librarians who support literacy are often invaluable in achieving various academic, vocational and social goals. However, this contribution often seems to be overlooked, with funding cuts disproportionately affecting librarians. Building on recent research from Australia, the USA and the UK, the author examines the role that librarians may play as literacy educators in schools in order to make visible their contributions to the school community. In doing so, this book urges for greater recognition and support to school libraries and their staff as valuable members of the school community.

African American English and the Achievement Gap: The Role of Dialectal Code Switching
Many African American children make use of African American English (AAE) in their everyday lives, and face academic barriers when introduced to Standard American English (SAE) in the classroom. Research has shown that students who can adapt and use SAE for academic purposes demonstrate significantly better test scores than their less adaptable peers. Accordingly, AAE use and its confirmed inverse relationship to reading achievement have been implicated in the Black-White Test Score Gap, thus becoming the focus of intense research and practical interest. This volume discusses dialectal code-switching from AAE to SAE and stresses the benefits and importance of African American students becoming bi-dialectal. It provides background theory and science supporting the most promising educational approach to date, Contrastive Analysis, a set of longstanding methods drawn from Second Language research and used effectively with students ranging from kindergarten through college. It offers a deeper knowledge of AAE use by students, the critical features of Contrastive Analysis, and detailed information about successful applications which teachers can apply in their own pedagogy.

Throughout, middle and secondary school teachers get a readable presentation of discipline-appropriate literacy practices and examples and adaptions of selected strategies. Set up to ensure comprehension, the chapters link to the Learning Cycle presented in the beginning of the book, graphic organizers help readers navigate chapter content, and questions, summaries, vignettes, and examples make the concepts clear. This edition of Content Area Reading and Literacy features three full chapters focusing on writing instruction, integrates culture and diversity throughout, and expands or reemphasizes important topics, such as life-long readers and learners beyond the printed text, close and critical reading in discipline-appropriate ways, evidence-based writing, and multimodal texts.

Note: This is the loose-leaf version of Understanding Reading Problems and does not include access to the Pearson eText. To order the Pearson eText packaged with the loose-leaf version, use ISBN 013384661X. The market-leading, dependable guide for assessing literacy at every stage of development and implementing corrective instruction. In this widely popular book, classroom teachers get up-to-date coverage of reading processes, their assessment, and their corrective instruction, including thorough treatment of reading and writing at every stage of development. The new edition provides updated coverage of the Common Core State Standards and the imperative to teach English learners. Included are an overview of essential reading processes--acquiring emergent literacy concepts, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, as well as spelling and writing--and a review of the stages of literacy development--emergent, beginning reading, building fluency, reading to learn and for pleasure, and mature reading. Thorough explanations and detailed procedures for assessing and teaching emergent literacy look at phonological awareness, phonics and word knowledge from beginning to advanced levels, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension of narrative and informational text. Teaching techniques range from the Response to Intervention framework to strategies for individual students, including those whose home language is not English. Diagnostic and week-to-week monitoring procedures, as well as formal assessments and testing terminology are covered in detail, and a full chapter covers laws and policies affecting children with special needs, as well as other physical and cognitive factors that impinge on students' literacy growth.
