Decentering the Researcher in Intimate Scholarship: Critical Posthuman Methodological Perspectives in Education
Intimate scholarship refers to qualitative methodologies, such as self-study and autoethnography, that directly engage the personal experience, knowledge, and/or practices of the researcher(s) as the focus of inquiry. While intimate scholarship offers entrypoints into non-binary thinking by blurring the line between researcher/researched, much work in this genre continues to reinforce a humanist I . In this volume, we ask what happens when the researcher in forms of intimate scholarship is decentered, or is considered as merely one part of an entangled material-discursive formation. Chapters in this volume highlight ways that researchers of teaching and teacher education can advance conversations in education while exploring theories with an ontological view of the world as fundamentally multiple, dynamic, and fluid. Drawing on a range of methods, authors put to work posthuman, non-linear, and multiplistic theories and concepts to disrupt and decenter the I in intimate methodologies. Also featured in this volume are conversations with leading posthuman scholars, who highlight the possibilities and challenges of decentering the researcher in intimate scholarship as a practice of social justice research.

The Social World of the Comprehensive School: How Pupils Adapt
A comprehensive school, like any community, is split into many groups and sub-divisions and contains many different `social worlds' within its structure. First published in 1983, this work is based on a one-year project carried out by the author which involved observation of pupils in lessons and interviews and informal conversations with pupils and teachers. This books provides a model of pupil orientations, starting with activity in context and including consideration of pupil goals and interests in school. The book considers pupil relationships, particularly between the so-called `swots' and `dossers' and also studies in depth a group of highly motivated pupils to discover how their goals and interests are translated into activity in lessons. It also looks at the role of the researcher and allows the reader to assess the effect of the data gathering process on the findings.

Early Childhood Care and Education at the Margins: African Perspectives on Birth to Three
The importance of early childhood care and education (ECCE) in the lives of very young children is gaining increasing attention around the globe and yet there is a persistent lack of diverse knowledge perspectives on this critical phase. This stems from dominant Eurocentric framings of early childhood research, and related theories. Early Childhood Care and Education at the Margins provides contextual accounts of ECCE in Africa in order to build multiple perspectives and to promote responsive thought and actions. The book is an entry point to knowledge production for birth to three in Africa and responds to the call for the field to be in dialogue with different perspectives that attempt to map concepts, debates and contemporary concerns. In this book, a group of African authors, representing both Anglophone and Francophone Africa, provide insider's perspectives on a wide range of geographic, cultural and thematic positions. In so doing, they show the breadth and depth of ideas on which the ECCE field draws. The chapters in the volume highlight a range of topics including poverty, early socialisation, local care practices, gendered roles, and service provision. They open up important points of departure for thinking about ECCE policy, practice, theory and research. The book presents African perspectives in a globalising world. It is therefore suitable for an international readership. It includes cross-cultural comparisons as well as critiques of dominant discourses which will be of particular interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students active in the field of ECCE, childhood studies, cultural studies and comparative education.

The Marketisation of English Higher Education: A Policy Analysis of a Risk-Based System
This book traces the development of a fully marketised higher education system in England over a 30-year period, and identifies five distinct stages of market reforms culminating in the Higher Education and Research Act (HMSO, 2017). The Act shifted the risks of institutional failure (and the prospect of market exit) onto applicants, presenting them with ever more applicant choice information and encouraging them to use their consumer behaviour to oblige weaker providers' lower tuition fees or lose market share to new competitors. The new regulatory regime represents a marked departure from previous attempts to introduce market dynamism into the sector and places the English HE system at the forefront of a global trend of system marketisation. The book employs a critical policy discourse analysis and addresses several key aspects of the current higher education policy landscape. It considers the extent to which there been a continuity of policy from the encouragement of efficiencies and accountability in the 1980s to the emphasis on competition and risk in 2017; whether the marketisation process is designedly cumulative or has developed in response to factors beyond the control of policymakers; and what the English case can tell us about the nature of neoliberalism and the future trajectories of other national systems in the process of marketising and differentiating their institutions.

Questioning the Assessment of Research Impact: Illusions, Myths and Marginal Sectors
This book provides the first comprehensive assessment of non-academic research impact in relation to a marginal field of study, namely tourism studies. Informed by interviews with key informants, ethnographic reflections on the author's extensive work with trade and professional associations, and various secondary data, it paints a picture of inevitable research policy failure. This conclusion is justified by reference to ill-founded official conceptualisations of practitioner and organisational behaviour, and the orientation and quality of tourism research. The author calls for a more serious consideration of research-informed teaching as a means of creating knowledge flows from universities. Research with greater social and economic impact might then be achievable. This radical assessment will be of interest and value to policy makers, university research managers and tourism scholars.

Education and Society in Post-Mao China
The post-Mao period has witnessed rapid social and economic transformation in all walks of Chinese life - much of it fuelled by, or reflected in, changes to the country's education system. This book analyses the development of that system since the abandonment of radical Maoism and the inauguration of `Reform and Opening' in the late 1970s. The principal focus is on formal education in schools and conventional institutions of tertiary education, but there is also some discussion of preschools, vocational training, and learning in non-formal contexts. The book begins with a discussion of the historical and comparative context for evaluating China's educational `achievements', followed by an extensive discussion of the key transitions in education policymaking during the `Reform and Opening' period. This informs the subsequent examination of changes affecting the different phases of education from preschool to tertiary level. There are also chapters dealing specifically with the financing and administration of schooling, curriculum development, the public examinations system, the teaching profession, the phenomenon of marketisation, and the `international dimension' of Chinese education. The book concludes with an assessment of the social consequences of educational change in the post-Mao era and a critical discussion of the recent fashion in certain Western countries for hailing China as an educational model. The analysis is supported by a wealth of sources - primary and secondary, textual and statistical - and is informed by both authors' wide-ranging experience of Chinese education. As the first monograph on China's educational development during the forty years of the post-Mao era, this book will be essential reading for all those seeking to understand the world's largest education system. It will also be crucial reference for educational comparativists, and for scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds researching contemporary Chinese society.

Preservice Teachers, Social Class, and Race in Urban Schools: Experiences and Strategies for Teacher Preparation
This book provides an autobiographical and research-based exploration of the perceptions of Black middle and upper class preservice teachers about teaching and learning in high poverty urban schools. While there is an extensive body of knowledge on White preservice teachers, limited studies examine Black middle and upper class preservice teachers who may also lack experience with students in high poverty urban schools. Through this narrative, the author explores her own professional journey and a research study of former students who experienced the same boundary crossing. Their voices add to the body of current knowledge of how race and class affect the perceptions of preservice teachers.
