Kenyan Public Universities in the Age of Internationalization: Challenges and Prospects
This book presents a comprehensive institutional level analysis of a single public institution of higher education in the Republic of Kenya using the case study method of investigation. It is the first case study to use both qualitative and quantitative research methodology to illuminate the experiences of Kenyan public universities with internationalization post-independence. Focusing on Kenya's oldest national public university-the University of Nairobi's experimentation with internationalization, Kenyan Public Universities in the Age of Internationalization is a first in the East African region. The book argues that attempts by institutions of higher education in Africa to engage in internationalization with the much more older and well established IHEs in the developed world has perpetuated the colonial legacy that has relegated these institutions to the position of the Other in the new international order. Several policy implications are offered on what it means to participate in internationalization from a marginal, peripheral position. The conventional assumption that political independence would bring to most African countries, and by extension their national public universities, a period of freedom from political, economic and cultural subjugation and exploitation by the more powerful world nations has proved elusive. This book is intended for a broad audience in the field of Comparative International Education. The mixed research methods used in this book will certainly appeal to instructors, students, and general readers interested in understanding the experiences of historically marginalized developing World institutions of higher education with internationalization.

The Chicana/o Education Pipeline: History, Institutional Critique, and Resistance
This anthology explores the relationships between Chicana/o students, families, and communities and the various school settings that comprise the education pipeline, from Kindergarten classrooms through postsecondary programs and postgraduate experiences. The essays, which appeared in Aztlan: A Journal of Chicano Studies between 1970 and 2015, present a historical overview that spans the 1880s to the present. It brings together the work of scholars who have elucidated Chicana/o education, and the resulting collection simultaneously historicizes current education research and bolsters our understanding of Chicanas/os' multifaceted relationship to schooling in the United States. Among the topics considered are bilingual education and cultural relevance, teacher expectations and student achievement, racism and sexism in postsecondary education, the Chicano movement and the high school walkouts, anti-ethnic studies legislation, school finance and governance, and Joteria identity. Together, the essays reveal how educational institutions have operated in contradictory ways for Chicana/o students: they have depressed and marginalized as well as emancipated and empowered them. The Chicana/o Education Pipeline presents the story of the struggle and perseverance of Chicana/o students, families, and communities as they have fought for a more equitable education.

Learning through a PRISM: Facilitating Student Intercultural Learning Abroad
In the emerging field of intercultural competence, this book is one of the first to propose a pedagogical framework and provide both the theory and tools to implement it. With the increased focus on educating students to be global citizens, Learning through a PRISM offers a deeper understanding of intercultural competence and an intentional and academic approach to intercultural experiences. This book introduces the PRISM, an academically grounded and experientially driven pedagogy for faculty who aim to design courses and experiences that holistically develop students' intercultural competence. It provides concrete tools and academic framing, and includes suggested readings, adaptable assignments, and clear rubrics. While the book focuses on study abroad settings, its concepts and resources can be broadly adapted to any course focused on the development of intercultural competence. The PRISM will challenge faculty and students to engage, interact, and create meaning in study abroad, intercultural, and global contexts.

Global Citizenship Education: A Critical Introduction to Key Concepts and Debates
Global Citizenship Education explores key ideas and issues within this field, placing them firmly within local, national and global dimensions. Including examples and case studies from across the world, the authors draw on ideas, experiences and histories within and beyond `the West' to contribute to multifaceted perspectives on global citizenship education. In concise chapters, the authors set out the key concepts and debates within the field. The notion of global citizenship education is contextualized within key educational frameworks, including citizenship education, global education, development education and peace education. Ian Davies, Edda Sant and Lynette Shultz explore different ways in which global citizenship can be taught, learned and assessed in formal and informal contexts. Including examples from a wide range of education institutions, chapters provide overviews of policy making and international practices borne out of different approaches to global citizenship education. With each chapter including a summary of key issues, annotated list of key resources, an exercise for students and a further reading list, Global Citizenship Education will aid understanding of this complex and debated area of study.

Global Citizenship Education and the Crises of Multiculturalism: Comparative Perspectives
The notion of global citizenship education (GCE) has emerged in the international education discourse in the context of the United Nations Education First Initiative that cites developing global citizens as one of its goals. In this book, the authors argue that GCE offers a new educational perspective for making sense of the existing dilemmas of multiculturalism and national citizenship deficits in diverse societies, taking into account equality, human rights and social justice. The authors explore how teaching and research may be implemented relating to the notion of global citizenship and discuss the intersections between the framework of GCE and multiculturalism. They address the three main topics which affect education in multicultural societies and in a globalized world, and which represent unsolved dilemmas: the issue of diversity in relation to creating citizens, the issue of equality and social justice in democratic societies, and the tension between the global and the local in a globalized world. Through a comparative study of the two prevailing approaches - intercultural education within the European Union and multicultural education in the United States - the authors seek what can be learned from each model. Global Citizenship Education and the Crises of Multiculturalism offers not only a unifying theoretical framework but also a set of policy recommendations aiming to link the two approaches.

Reclaiming Indigenous Research in Higher Education
Indigenous students remain one of the least represented populations in higher education. They continue to account for only one percent of the total post-secondary student population, and this lack of representation is felt in multiple ways beyond enrollment. Less research money is spent studying Indigenous students, and their interests are often left out of projects that otherwise purport to address diversity in higher education. Recently, Native scholars have started to reclaim research through the development of their own research methodologies and paradigms that are based in tribal knowledge systems and values, and that allow inherent Indigenous knowledge and lived experiences to strengthen the research. Reclaiming Indigenous Research in Higher Education highlights the current scholarship emerging from these scholars of higher education. From understanding how Native American students make their way through school, to tracking tribal college and university transfer students, this book allows Native scholars to take center stage, and shines the light squarely on those least represented among us.
