Children Reading and Writing: Structures and Strategies
This volume presents the results of a two-year research project which examined the development and use of reading and writing by school-aged children. The studies examined the relationships between children's reading and writing by looking at the social contexts that surrounded their understandings and uses of reading and writing; the cognitive processes that the readers and writers invoked in completing different kinds of tasks; and the products that were produced, including the ideas that were developed in reading and writing, and the ways in which these ideas were structured in presentation or recall. The results point to new understandings about children's context for literacy, and ways in which children at distinctly different phases of their schooling experiences approach reading and writing. The author contrasts ways in which children at each of the differing ages approach their reading and writing tasks, illuminating the knowledge they already have and what they have yet to learn.

Child-initiated Writing: Exciting Ideas for Engaging Children in the Writing Process
This is an inspirational book of ideas and activities that make the process of learning to write not only enjoyable but downright fun! Lynn believes that it's every practitioner's dream that a child will independently choose a writing activity without any cajoling or coaxing and she has used these ideas over the years with great success. She clearly demonstrates that writing does not have to happen within the confines of a designated writing book but that the same learning intentions can be met within less formal activities and scenarios. The contents of the book addresses the needs of all practitioners working with children under 6 years of age but is also accessible to childminders and parents.

Language Policy in the Soviet Union
Soviet language policy provides rich material for the study of the impact of policy on language use. Moreover, it offers a unique vantage point on the tie between language and culture. While linguists and ethnographers grapple with defining the relationship of language to culture, or of language and culture to identity, the Soviets knew that language is an integral and inalienable part of culture. The former Soviet Union provides an ideal case study for examining these relationships, in that it had one of the most deliberate language policies of any nation state. This is not to say that it was constant or well-conceived; in fact it was marked by contradictions, illogical decisions, and inconsistencies. Yet it represented a conscious effort on the part of the Communist leadership to shape both ethnic identity and national consciousness through language. As a totalitarian state, the USSR represents a country where language policy, however radical, could be implemented at the will of the government. Furthermore, measures (such as forced migrations) were undertaken that resulted in changing population demographics, having a direct impact on what is a central issue here: the very nature of the Soviet population. That said, it is important to keep in mind that in the Soviet Union there was a difference between stated policy and actual practice. There was no guarantee that any given policy would be implemented, even when it had been officially legislated.

Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition
This book offers readers a basic grounding in L2 vocabulary acquisition. In addition, it provides theoretical analyses and empirical data regarding Chinese learners of English: their specific learning difficulties, needs, strategies, etc. The book provides an overview of the research in L2 vocabulary acquisition in the last two decades. Linguistic, psycholinguistic, socio-cultural, neurolinguistic, and corpus linguistics analyses are considered. The book constructs a comprehensive framework for Computer Assisted Vocabulary Learning (CAVL). This is achieved by providing an overview of vocabulary learning in CALL and then proposing a big framework within which most vocabulary learning programs can be conceptualized. The author then gives a detailed account of how Chinese learners approach English vocabulary learning. She provides an up-to-date picture of the overall situation regarding the language policies adopted, the traditional, orthodox approach to language learning, and the recent reforms implemented in Chinese universities. General and specific vocabulary learning difficulties encountered by Chinese learners are documented and analysed and empirical studies are reported.

Multilingualism, Cultural Identity, and Education in Morocco
In this book, I attempt to show how colonial and postcolonial political forces have endeavoured to reconstruct the national identity of Morocco, on the basis of cultural representations and ideological constructions closely related to nationalist and ethnolinguistic trends. I discuss how the issue of language is at the centre of the current cultural and political debates in Morocco. The present book is an investigation of the ramifications of multilingualism for language choice patterns and attitudes among Moroccans. More importantly, the book assesses the roles played by linguistic and cultural factors in the development and evolution of Moroccan society. It also focuses on the impact of multilingualism on cultural authenticity and national identity. Having been involved in research on language and culture for many years, I am particularly interested in linguistic and cultural assimilation or alienation, and under what conditions it takes place, especially today that more and more Moroccans speak French and are influenced by Western social behaviour more than ever before. In the process, I provide the reader with an updated description of the different facets of language use, language maintenance and shift, and language attitudes, focusing on the linguistic situation whose analysis is often blurred by emotional reactions, ideological discourses, political biases, simplistic assessments, and ethnolinguistic identities.

Phonological Awareness and Primary Phonics

The book is a brief, practical guide for teachers who want or have to teach phonics. Phonological awareness and phonics are integrated so that the foundation of phonological awareness prepares students for phonics and makes the 2 areas reciprocal. In work with struggling readers, Dr. Gunning developed a system to build on what students know and teach them to analyze words independently. He also found that students need a lot of practice to become effective readers.

Phonological Awareness and Primary Phonics is a practical resource manual designed to provide step by step suggestions for assessing and instructing students in grades K-2 in phonological or phonemic awareness and phonics skills and strategies. This book provides an overview of phonological awareness and phonics, but goes far beyond that to present virtually everything a teacher might need in order to implement a high-quality, effective word analysis program.
