Stop Bullying Pocketbook
Bullying - Repeated intimidation intentionally carried out by a more powerful person or group in order to cause physical and/or emotional hurtA . It happens in every type of school and in all classes and cultures; it's a problem for thousands of children and increasing numbers of teachers, and it's the reason several young people a year commit suicide. In recent years, a new insidious form of bullying has emerged: cyber bullying. It's the fastest-growing type of bullying, leaving victims vulnerable 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This second edition of the Stop Bullying Pocketbook is about what to do to prevent and stop all forms of bullying in schools. This extensively illustrated book is full of practical suggestions for both teachers and students. For teachers there are in-service training exercises; advice to give parents; practical tips about creating an environment that deters bullies; what to say to bullies and victims and an action plan for creating a bully-free school. A range of awareness-raising ideas for pupils can be readily incorporated into teaching plans, while authoritative chapters on what is known about bullying and on understanding bullies and victims place everything in context. Though firmly advocating adult intervention, the book is equally clear that children and young people need strategies they can use themselves. Numerous ideas and exercises are provided for use with pupils to help them avoid or deflect bullying. These include showing them how to communicate differently; how to say (and shout) no; how to 'fog' insults and what to do about cyber bullying. There are also several simple but effective ideas for interactive work exploring bullying through drama, poetry, story and discussion. Michele Elliott, child psychologist and founder of anti-bullying charity Kidscape, has an OBE for services to children. She draws on 40 years' experience teaching and running Kidscape, has chaired Home Office and WHO Committees and worked with the DCSF, Childline and NSPCC.

Aspirations, Access and Attainment: International perspectives on widening participation and an agenda for change
It is perhaps ironic that as the global financial crisis has, in some cases, led governments and institutions to pull back from and/or set more modest goals and associated funding around widening participation, there is an ever-growing sense that the ideals buttressing the widening participation movement are becoming more universally acknowledged by educators across the globe. That acknowledgement has translated into action on the ground via such means as policy formulation, strategic planning and target setting - each of which often reflects local contexts and manifests a regional `flavour'. There is also, however, an increasing realisation that there are commonalities in the challenges involved with national or regional initiatives to increase the participation of non-traditional groups in higher education and that the drivers of such initiatives - and ultimately the cohorts they target - stand to benefit considerably from an open exchange of ideas and sharing of experience. This book brings together current regional perspectives on widening participation as presented by prominent academics, researchers, policy-makers, and students from across the globe. It will create for policy-makers, institutions, and individuals interested in enabling access, a useful and informative resource that will introduce, formulate, shape and reinforce the ideas and aims of the World Congresses on widening access. As the contributors maintain, in an increasingly globalised market economy and in the face of recent seismic economic, political and social change around the world, it is imperative to both secure existing talent within our populations and uncover and nurture new sources of talent. The series of essays featured in this book will explore, anticipate, and highlight themes underpinning a global movement towards a step-change in thinking, strategies, and policies - one that places youth and students from around the world at its heart.

* How can educators develop new forms of professionalism required by changing conditions? * How can useful lessons be drawn from failure, as well as success? * What can be learned from best management practice in commerce and industry? *And, crucially, how do educators ensure that education's most precious resource - the people who provide it - learn from experience in order to continue giving their best? This book examines what actually happens, as well as what ought to happen, in the quest for best practice in education. It investigates the experiences of educators and teachers, in their continuous quest to improve the quality of learning and teaching provision. It provides rich case studies from a range of different educational settings in the UK and Australia which reveal how educational leaders and practitioners are handling new priorities and programmes for change.

Education in Britain: 1944 to the Present
Education in Britain has been transformed over the last 50 years. State education systems have expanded hugely, and levels of achievement and participation have continuously risen. At the same time, society has become 'educationalizeda : the home, the workplace, the holiday and the playgroup are seen as sites for learning, in ways that increasingly connect to the acquisition of formally--defined skills and knowledges. Yet for most of the postwar period, education policy has been dominated by questions of 'failurea 'crisisa and 'declinea . Half a century of reform has far from eliminated substantial inequalities, and the 'conservatisma of education in the face of major cultural and economic change remains a central political issue. This book seeks to describe and explain the patterning of change and continuity in British education, and to account for the persistence of the controversies which have accompanied it. In doing so, it combines economic, political, cultural and social approaches to the study of education.

International Perspectives on Competence in the Workplace: Research, Policy and Practice
In the future a more competent workforce will be required as workers will have to acquire the competence to predict and deal with novel situations at work. This book aims to provide the reader with insightful perspectives about competence in different situations and contexts. It presents a more enlightened view of human competence by opening up an international dialogue about the meaning and interpretation of competence in the workplace, and the impact of learning environments on workplace policy and practice. Five major premises which provide a basis for how we interpret, experience, and teach competence in the workplace are put forward: notions of worker competence, and the persuasiveness of informal workplace training; developing competence as an individual, and the inherent relationship between the worker and work, and the lifeworld; learning which develops higher level competences based on a more holistic conception of competence; characteristics of learning environments as integral components of learning at work; learning environments construed as theoretical and methodological problems in terms of their impact on the acquisition of competence.

Empowering Teachers and Parents: School Restructuring Through the Eyes of Anthropologists
A much-needed examination of the impact on teachers and parents of the effort to improve our schools through restructuring, this book looks at professionalization and parent empowerment programs from the ground level rather than from the large-scale policy level. The editor, active in both policy setting and monitoring implementation, approaches the subject with an overarching view that weaves together a set of diverse case studies that examine some of the most notable efforts in this area of school reform. The first section demonstrates the tremendous difficulties involved in attempting to reshape the culture of public school teaching, noting both institutional resistance to change and the personal resistance of the professionals who are, in theory, being empowered through this approach. The second section details the problems of launching parent empowerment opportunities, in a large urban setting, and a contrasting case examines the choice of enrollment option. Here, too, these studies examine the effectiveness of these programs. The conclusion reflects on the opportunities such innovations provide for researchers and assesses the importance of such research in shaping the innovations themselves through evaluations while they are in process.

Judicial Settlement of International Disputes: International Court of Justice Other Courts and Tribunals Arbitration and Conciliation
This publication gives the opmlOns and discussions of an international Symposium on the judicial settlement of international disputes as well as three expert reports which were submitted for the Symposium's preparation. The Symposium sought to answer the following three questions: (1) Does the International Court of Justice, as it is presently shaped, cor respond to the requirements which follow from its functions as the central judicial body of the international community? (2) To which extent and for which subject matters is it advisable to create and develop special judicial bodies with a jurisdiction limited to certain regions or to certain subject matters? (3) To which extent and for which questions is it advisable to provide for the settlement of international legal disputes by other organs than permanent courts? The Symposium took place from July 10-12, 1972 in the Max-Planck Institut fiir ausHindisches offentliches Recht und Volkerrecht in Heidelberg. Experts in international law and international jurisdiction from many countries were invited, not in their official capacity, but rather on the basis of their individual competence; the list of participants appears at the end of this volume.

Rethinking Educational Leadership: From Improvement to Transformation
John West-Burnham offers a radical critique of prevailing models of leadership in education, particularly models of school leadership, notably the British view of headship. For almost a generation, school leadership has been focused on the concept of improvement, within a policy context of improvement and a prevailing culture rooted in incremental adjustment rather than a fundamental reappraisal. Transformation is a particularly evocative concept; it is one of those words that it is almost impossible to raise objections to. However, as is so often the case with such words, its power is often proportionate to the ambiguity with which it is used. In the context of a discussion about transforming schools three broad categories of usage might be identified: transformation as improved performance, transformation as the achievement of optimum effectiveness and transformation as profound change. It is in this latter respect that the book will offer an alternative model of leadership. Transformation is not about improving output or efficiency; it is not about incremental improvement or optimising organizational effectiveness. Transformation is rather about the profound change of every component of the organization following a fundamental reconceptualisation of its purpose and nature. Transformation is a process that ensures that an organization is appropriate to the context in which it operates. Transformation is about questioning the very nature of the school as an organization and the nature of organizations. The distinctive nature of this book is that it will focus on leadership attitudes, values and personal qualities (the elusive and intangible elements of leadership) rather than simply reworking the traditional blend of knowledge, skills and experience. Central to the book will be the notion of the personal 'mind map' - the model of leadership that determines personal behaviour. The book will focus on helping leaders review and reconceptualise their personal mindscapes. The book will have a strongly practical focus and is designed to be a resource for school leaders who find that their work is increasingly moving beyond traditional boundaries into areas for which there are few precedents and only limited resources.

American School Reform: Progressive, Equity, and Excellence Movements, 1883-1993
Berube analyzes the three great educational reform movements in the United States. He shows how they have been shaped by outside societal forces: Progressive Education was an offshoot of the Progressive Movement; Equity Reform in the 1960s was influenced by the Civil Rights Movement; Excellence Reform in the last decade was a response to foreign economic competition. Within each matrix, common characteristics of each movement emerge. Progressive Education with its emphasis on critical thinking and child-centered schools set the stage for what was to follow. Equity Reform sought to complete the unfinished agenda of Progressive Education in educating the poor. Excellence Reform repudiated both in the name of higher standards and content-specific curriculums. The emergence of sophisticated educational research since the 1960s has influenced educational policy to be more research-based. Berube provides a necessary overview of the great movements in school reform over the last century.

Raising Secular Jews - Yiddish Schools and Their Periodicals for American Children, 1917 1950
This unique literary study of Yiddish children's periodicals casts new light on secular Yiddish schools in America in the first half of the twentieth century. Rejecting the traditional religious education of the Talmud Torahs and congregational schools, these Yiddish schools chose Yiddish itself as the primary conduit of Jewish identity and culture. Four Yiddish school networks emerged, which despite their political and ideological differences were all committed to propagating the Yiddish language, supporting social justice, and preparing their students for participation in both Jewish and American culture. Focusing on the Yiddish children's periodicals produced by the Labor Zionist Farband, the secular Sholem Aleichem schools, the socialist Workmen's Circle, and the Ordn schools of the Communist-aligned International Workers Order, Naomi Kadar shows how secular immigrant Jews sought to pass on their identity and values as they prepared their youth to become full-fledged Americans.

It is a call to action for faculty, staff, and administrators in all facets of higher education, and emphasizes the shared responsibility toward students with disabilities and toward creating meaningful change. This monograph begins with a look into the future of disability education. How will students create their own identities? Will there be a need for disability accommodations or will a universally designed world eliminate that current necessity? It also looks at the past, with discussions of disability legislation such as the ADA of 1990, the impact of Supreme Court decisions, descriptions of college students with disabilities, and the paradigm shift from the medical deficit model of disability to one that focuses on the individual s lived experience as a social construct. Drawing on theoretical frameworks in multiple disciplines, disability identity development is explained, ally development is defined, and disability services are explored. The monograph ends with a discussion of where disability education is now and how faculty, staff, and administrators will continue to be allies of inclusion for students in the years to come. This is the 5th issue of the 39th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Shaping a New Educational Landscape: Creating a New Context for Learning
Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world, formal schooling is frequently following rather than leading. The impression is given by central government that the education system serves as a 'thermostat' restoring society's settings in areas such as productivity, citizenship, health, sexual mores and behaviour. Educational reform over the last twenty years has clarified an existing educational process, reformatted the financial management of schools and resuscitated the inspection system. It has not, however, laid the foundations of a world-class future responsive educational system. Shaping a New Educational Landscape brings together writers considering a wide range of possibilities for future development in education and society from different perspectives. Exploring alternative scenarios and strategies, they are not engaged in making accurate predictions but in unsettling present thinking and stimulating discussion. Together they form a fascinating contribution to the growing debate about how we might generate an educational process that will sponsor new economic paradigms and create a bold participative society on the new global stage. Computers in Third-World Schools: Examples, Experience and Issues
The reasons why governments of developing countries should put computer technology in their schools are highly controversial, but no less than the actual use being made of these comparatively expensive machines and their software. This book looks at experience in African, Asian and Arabic-speaking countries that already have computers in some of their schools. It is based mainly on research in China, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and Tunisia. The authors debate policy and practice in the light of experience to date. They identify the rationales commonly deployed by Ministries of Education and international agencies, but argue themselves for a long-term view of the potential of computers to liberalise education, and through such education to reduce dependency and inequity.

Academic Freedom in the Post-9/11 Era
Academic freedom has been a principle that undergirds the university since 1915. Beyond this, it also protects a spirit of free inquiry essential to a democratic society. But in the post-9/11 present, the basic principles of academic freedom have been deeply challenged. There have been many startling instances where the rhetoric of national security and terror, corporate interests, and privatization have cast a pall over the terrain of academic freedom. In the post-9/11 university, professors face job loss or tenure denial for speaking against state power, while their students pay more tuition and fall deeper in debt. This timely collection features an impressive assembly of the nation s leading intellectuals, addressing some of the most urgent issues facing higher education in the United States today. Spanning a wide array of disciplinary fields, Academic Freedom in the Post-9/11 Era seeks to intervene on the economic and political crises that are compromising the future of our educational institutions.
