Concepts of the Public in Market-Driven Education
Concepts of the Public in Market-Driven Education opens a conversation on the nature of the public in education systems weary from market driven educational reform. Ruth Boyask observes the characteristic of publicness within contemporary education settings, a characteristic defined by tools from public sphere and democratic education theory. Boyask's investigations of publicness in educational sites are founded in conceptualising public education as pluralist, unbounded and conditional. These concepts of the public are important for ongoing and future debate on public education. The settings Boyask examines are different in structure, function and location yet each demonstrates the push and pull between market relations (including competition, efficiency and productivity) and the desire for social equality and democracy in education. Examples of educational settings are drawn broadly from an Anglo-American imaginary that has taken hold in educational systems transnationally, with detailed observation from three research studies of education policy enactment in England, (including research on curriculum reform in a private democratic school, privatisation of regional educational services and governance in English private schools. These case studies provide contexts for examining public accountability, public service and the public good as they relate to a reconceptualised public education. Boyask's argument is that by opening a conversation about the nature of the public within these sites we bring them into the spheres of a pluralist public education. They become open to public scrutiny and through their debate arise new ideas for challenging market-driven restrictions to contemporary public education.

Chapters in this contributed volume offer case studies, strategies, and exemplars of how faculty can re-engage in institutional service, mentoring, governance, and administrative duties to advance equity efforts at all levels of the university, calling for what Dr. Nancy Chick names in the Foreword as a scholarship of influence. This book draws from a diverse range of methodologies and disciplines, issuing an invitation to faculty across the divide of their specific college, school, or corner of the university into cross-conversations and partnerships for positive change.

Leadership in Higher Education from a Transrelational Perspective
There is an abundance of research saying that not only is leadership in higher education ineffective but also that it actually undermines the essential work that should be happening in universities. Christopher M. Branson, Maureen Marra, Margaret Franken and Dawn Penney provide a new insight into leadership that has proven to be far more effective for all involved - the transrelational approach to leadership. This new way of leading places an emphasis on the importance of the relationships that the leader develops with each and every person they are leading. However, in order to apply this new way of leading, higher education institutions must change some of the key ways they work. This book provides direction in how this can happen, what benefits would result, and offers a view on what the future for higher education might be if such changes to leadership are not made. Leadership in Higher Education from a Transrelational Perspective both critiques the likely implications of adopting this transrelational form of leadership into a higher educational institution and discusses the implications of not doing so. Although a transrelational approach to leadership might seem daunting for higher education institutions to adopt, is there any other choice? The authors argue that it is inconceivable for institutions founded upon promoting human development as a consequence of research to ignore such research that not only questions the suitability of current leadership practices but also offers a more effective alternative.

Confronting Academic Mobbing in Higher Education: Personal Accounts and Administrative Action
Academic mobbing, a bullying behavior that targets a specific faculty member, is growing in higher education. It is a dangerous phenomenon that often attacks competent researchers and scholars who are ethical, outspoken in support of others, and normally reflect professional achievement that is coveted, resented, and perceived as intimidating by lesser faculty and administrators. Therefore, it is important to understand how academic mobbing begins, expands amongst faculty and administrators, is actually supported by faculty and administrators by either proactive efforts or actively ignoring, and results in a weakening of the higher education institution due to the reputation being detrimentally, and many times irreparably, impacted. Confronting Academic Mobbing in Higher Education: Personal Accounts and Administrative Action is an essential research publication that provides comprehensive research on the development of academic mobbing as a prevalent form of bullying within higher education and seeks to explore solutions and provide support for professionals currently dealing with this phenomenon. Highlighting a range of topics such as ethics, faculty outcomes, and narcissism, this book is ideal for higher education faculty, deans, department chairs, provosts, chancellors, university presidents, rectors, administrators, academicians, researchers, human resources faculty, policymakers, and academic leaders.

Leveraging Technology to Improve School Safety and Student Wellbeing
From implementation in the classroom to building security, technology has permeated all aspects of education throughout the United States. Though hardware has been developed to identify and prevent weaponry from entering a school, including video cameras, entry control devices, and weapon detectors, school safety remains a fundamental concern with the recent increase of school violence and emergence of cyberbullying. Professionals need answers on how to use this technology to protect the physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of all children. Leveraging Technology to Improve School Safety and Student Wellbeing is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on the application of technology in P-12 school safety and its use to foster an environment where students can feel safe and be academically successful. The book will comprise empirical, conceptual, and practical applications that craft an overall understanding of the issues in creating a safe learning environment and the role technology can and should play; where a student's wellbeing is valued and protected from external and internal entities, equitable access is treasured as a means for facilitating the growth of the whole student, and policy, practices, and procedures are implemented to build a foundation to transform the culture and climate of the school into an inclusive nurturing environment. While highlighting topics such as professional development, digital citizenship, and community infrastructure, this publication is ideally designed for educators, scholars, leadership practitioners, coordinators, policymakers, government officials, law enforcement, security professionals, IT consultants, parents, academicians, researchers, and students.

: The Universities and Education Today (1962): The Lindsay Memorial Lectures given at the University College of North Staffordshire
First published in 1962, this book comprises lectures given in November 1961 to what was then the University College of North Staffordshire. It deals with the aims, rather than the administrative problems of the Universities, to put at the forefront of the reader's mind the fundamentals of University organisation, structure, and development. Butterfield has in mind the needs of undergraduates, and tries to concentrate attention on that electric contact between teacher and student for the sake of which all our elaborate educational machinery exists. He examines the position of the teacher, the status and function of an academic profession, and the relations between teaching and research.

The School Principal: Visionary Leadership and Competent Management
Over the past two decades, efforts to improve schools have significantly modified role expectations for principals. Today, school-level administrators are expected to be both visionary leaders and competent managers. Based on the conviction that administration is an amalgam of leadership and management, The School Principal emphasizes the need for practitioners to apply conceptual skills to make what to do decisions, to apply technical skills to make how to do decisions, and to apply relational skills to engage in democratic decision making. Kowalski frames the book with a discussion of the nature of schools, the roles of principals, and their need to improve schools. The book then provides a balanced treatment of leadership and management, covering issues of personal behavior, instructional leadership, relationship building issues, finances, facilities, personnel management, pupil services, and maintaining safe schools. The text closes with discussion of the vital aspects of practice for contemporary principals, addressing problem solving, collaborative change strategies, and personal commitment to being a principal. Special Features: Vignettes introduce the subject matter in the context of common challenges faced by practitioners. Knowledge-Based Questions and Skill-Based Activities prompt readers to engage with and reflect on the chapter content. The School Principal aligns with the Educational Leadership Consortium Council (ELCC) Standards. Treating principals as concurrently visionary leaders and competent managers, this excellent text addresses the needs of aspiring and practicing principals, providing the tools to build effective and efficient schools.

It is also about the strategies by which individuals respond to the impact of structural and cultural change; about personal change as much as organizational change; about the place of values in framing organizational form and culture, as well as those which look at individual and group responses to the pressures which they feel. Professors as Academic Leaders: Expectations, Enacted Professionalism and Evolving Roles
What is the role of a professor? How does someone achieve professorial status? What do non-professorial colleagues think about professors? How do professors themselves perceive their roles? What are the bases of these perceptions, and what are their implications for the professoriate's evolving role both within the neoliberal university, and in the approaching post-neoliberal era? Professors as Academic Leaders draws on a wealth of data not only to explore what it is to be a professor but also to consider how professors are perceived by others. Linda Evans presents the findings from four studies, with a combined data base of over 2,400 questionnaire responses and over 90 interview transcripts, and discusses their implications for the future development of the UK-based professoriate and academic leadership in higher education. She analyses the concepts of leadership and of professionalism, and illustrates how, in trying to meet people's expectations of them, professors' 'enacted', professionalism is shaped by the professionalism that others demand of them. Professorship is revealed to be demanding, at times stressful and morale-sapping, and at times exhilarating and rewarding. Linda Evans questions whether universities are making best use of their most senior academics, and proposes ways of refashioning professorship.

Educational Leadership as a Culturally-Constructed Practice: New Directions and Possibilities
This edited book collection disrupts received notions of educational leadership, culture and diversity as currently portrayed in practice and theory. It draws on compelling studies of educational leadership from the global north and south, as well as from a range of ethnic, religious and gendered perspectives and critical research approaches. In so doing, the book powerfully challenges contemporary leadership discourses of diversity that reproduce essentialising leadership practices, binary divisions and asymmetrical power relations. The various chapters contest and move beyond exhortations for leadership in increasingly diverse societies; revealing through their rich portraits of the hybridity of leadership practice, the shallowness of diversity discourses that are framed as something we (the culturally homogenous) leader do to (heterogenous) `others'. The volume is more than critique. Instead it offers readers new directions and possibilities through which to understand, theorise and practise educational leadership in the twenty first century. In portraying leading as a relational practice in contexts of cultural hybridity (Blackmore, this volume), it extends critical theories for and of leadership practice, examining the intersectionality between leadership and a range of social categories, and challenging notions of leadership as a singular construct. Compelling research narratives reveal educational leadership practice as nuanced, temporal, site specific and prefigured by traditions and cultural understandings that reach beyond a simplification of educational leadership as understood through unitary lenses of race, gender or ethnicity. This book is essential reading for academics and students of educational leadership and management, as well as administrators.

Alternatives to Privatizing Public Education and Curriculum: Festschrift in Honor of Dale D. Johnson
Through conversations in honor of Dale D. Johnson, this book takes a critical view of the monoculture in curriculum and policy that has developed in education with the increase of federal funding and privatization of services for public education, and examines the shift from public interest and control to private and corporate shareholder hegemony. Most states' educational responsibilities-assessment of constituents, curriculum development, and instructional protocols-are increasingly being outsourced to private enterprises in an effort to reduce state budgets. These enterprises have been given wide access to state resources such as public data from state-sanctioned testing results, field-testing rights to public schools, and financial assistance. Chapter authors challenge this paradigm as well as the model that has set growing premiums on accountability and performance measures. Bullying, School Violence, and Climate in Evolving Contexts: Culture, Organization, and Time
Since 2005, bullying, school violence, and school safety literatures have expanded dramatically in content, disciplines, and empirical studies. However, despite this massive expansion of research, there has also been a surprising lack of theoretical and empirical direction to guide efforts on how to advance basic science and practical applications of this growing scientific area of interest. Bullying, School Violence, and Climate in Evolving Contexts outlines a novel unifying model that brings together previously distinct literatures on a wide range of issues (e.g., the structure of school violence and bullying, similarities and differences across cultural groups, weapons in schools, student suicidal ideation and behaviors, teacher-student and student-teacher victimization, sexual harassment, cyberbullying, school climate, etc.). Drawing from numerous large-scale research studies from around the globe, the authors examine the theoretical foundations of school safety and bullying and propose a series of groundbreaking new theoretical and practice proposals. This is a perfect book for doctoral candidates, young academics hoping to forge into new areas of bullying research, and seasoned scholars who delve into the conceptual areas of school violence and bullying.

European Perspectives on Islamic Education and Public Schooling
Islamic religious education (IRE) in Europe has become a subject of intense debate during the past decade. There is concern that states are doing too little or too much to shape the spiritual beliefs of private citizens. State response to the concern ranges from sponsoring religious education in public schools to forgoing it entirely and policies vary according to national political culture. In some countries public schools teach Islam to Muslims as a subject within a broader religious curriculum that gives parents the right to choose their children's religious education. In the other countries public schools teach Islam to all pupils as a subject with a close relation to the academic study of religions. There are also countries where public schools do not teach religion at all, although there is an opportunity to teach about Islam in school subjects such as art, history, or literature. IRE taught outside publicly funded institutions, is of course also taught as a confessional subject in private Muslim schools, mosques and by Muslim organisations. Often students who attend these classes also attend a publicly funded main stream school . This volume brings together a number of researchers for the first time to explore the interconnections between Islamic educations and public schooling in Europe. The relation between Islamic education and public schooling is analysed within the publicly and privately funded sectors. How is publicly funded education organised, why is it organised in this way, what is the history and what are the controversial issues? What are the similarities and differences between privately run Islamic education and main stream schooling? What are the experiences of teachers, parents and pupils? The volume will be of interest to scholars of Islam in Europe, policy makers of education and integration and teachers of religious education.
