Unraveling Reform Rhetoric: What Educators Need to Know and Understand
Traditional public educators in the US have too little information about the free market of schooling, otherwise known as privatization/choice education. As a result, traditional public education colleagues have lost sight of where they are and how they got there. In this primer, educators, parents/caregivers, and policymakers are offered an examination of the forces and factors that undercut traditional public education and an inquiry into the primary purpose and quality instruction that distinguishes traditional public education from free market schooling. Without knowing about the educational misdirection fostered by free market schooling, traditional public education in the US cannot invest in continuous improvement necessary to enrich the futures of all students and our nation's democracy. The time has come for traditional public educators to study how we got out on a limb. This book explores the nature of free market schooling and discusses the information that traditional public educators need to muster a defense of purpose, quality, social justice, and how to think. Practical and theoretical insights throughout this book focus on professional practice in traditional public education as the means by which colleagues can assert excellence on behalf of all students while thwarting the negative impacts of free market schooling.

Movements on the Streets and in Schools: State Repression, Neoliberal Reforms, and Oaxaca Teacher Counter-pedagogies
Research links social movement and education, but almost no related studies address classroom practices. Oaxacan teachers in this ethnography are political and pedagogical pioneers who move between the streets and schools. This book materializes from the practices of politics in classrooms and the manifestations and rural primaria communities in a major migration-sending region of Southeastern Mexico. Movements on the Streets and in Schools theorizes teaching and activism in creative tension, with what Anna Tsing called friction of global connection. Using friction, three contentious concepts emerge: quality, patrimony, and governability. Through the engaged universals of quality, patrimony, and governability, this book describes and analyzes how activism and teaching intertwine on the city streets and in the rural schools. Here, teaching, between uprisings, police raids, and austerity reforms, reveals how operating critically transcends a centered critical project. For instance, quality, to state and corporate philanthropists, leads to standardization, but parents and pupils rally around quality education to demand learning-centered schools. Likewise, patrimony may drive heritage for the tourist market, but patrimony also permits teachers to claim labor rights on historical grounds. Lastly, governability, an NGO imperative for Global Southern countries like Mexico, becomes pedagogical when the misrule of state authorities leads to police raids against teachers and cuts to public education. Movements on the Streets and in Schools is timely, as the activism-schooling nexus has just begun to generate interest with high-profile events on and around campuses worldwide. Both pre- and in-service teachers, education activists, administrators, and professors alike will find this book essential in bringing activism into their classroom practices in a clear and cohesive manner.

Multicultural Education in an Age of Globalization: Compelling Issues for Engagement, starts out with a discussion of western colonization of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the residual effects of colonialism in the forms of colonial mindset of power, dominance, and white racial superiority that have continued to challenge the hopes of a peaceful and more harmonious exchange and interaction in the 21st century global communities. Issues such as white privilege and cultural humility are discussed in-depth. Subsequently, the idea of globalization and the concept of global citizenship are also addressed in light of their implications for multicultural education curriculum and practice in the 21st century classrooms. The book identifies and discusses compelling issues that must be carefully addressed as we undertake multicultural education in the 21st century educational setting: whether in the K-`12 or higher education setting. Such issues include Affirmative Action, Gender Equity issues, Religion in the public school setting, and the problem of Poverty in the 21st century societies.

Evidence-Based Practice in School Mental Health: Addressing DSM-5 Disorders in Schools
Though schools have become the default mental health providers for children and adolescents, they are poorly equipped to meet the mental health needs of their students. Evidence-Based Practice in School Mental Health differs from other books that address child and adolescent psychopathology by focusing on how to help students with mental disorders in pre-K-12th-grade schools. Chapters address the prevalence of a disorder in school-age populations, appropriate diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, comorbid disorders, available rapid assessment instruments, school-based interventions using multi-tiered systems of support, and easy-to-follow suggestions for progress monitoring. Additionally, the text shares detailed suggestions for how school-based clinicians can collaborate with teachers, parents, and community providers to address the needs of youth with mental health problems. Each chapter finishes with extensive web resources and real-life case examples drawn from the author's clinical practice. This book serves as a helpful resource for school-based mental health providers (e.g., school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors), communities-in-schools coordinators, and MSW students focusing on child and adolescent mental health.

Rankings and Global Knowledge Governance: Higher Education, Innovation and Competitiveness
Higher education and innovation policies are today seen as central elements in national economic competitiveness, increasingly measured by global rankings. The book analyses the evolution of indicator-based global knowledge governance, where various national attributes have been evaluated under international comparative assessment. Reflecting this general trend, the Shanghai ranking, first published in 2003, has pressured governments and universities all over the world to improve their performance in global competition. More recently, as global rankings have met criticism for their methodology and scope, measurements of various sizes and shapes have proliferated: some celebrating novel methodological solutions, others breaking new conceptual grounds. This book takes a fresh look at developments in the field of knowledge governance by showing how emerging indicators, innovation indexes and subnational comparisons are woven into the existing fabric of measurements that govern our ideas of higher education, innovation and competitiveness. This book argues that while rankings are becoming more numerous and fragmented, the new knowledge products, nevertheless, tend to reproduce ideas and practices existing in the field of global measurement.

Cultures of Social Justice Leadership: An Intercultural Context of Schools
This book explores our understanding of school leaders' actions as they work to enact a socially just school culture. Including unique case studies from around the globe, the editors and contributors examine whether this work is enhanced or diminished by the context in which the school is placed. While the onus of emphasising social justice is placed on the school leader, they must enact this within the micro/meso/macro context of the school setting. Rich in both the unique stories of these schools and their successes and challenges in the enactment of social justice, these global case studies act as a lens for social justice leadership in a variety of regions and at international levels. The global scale combined with detailed analysis of this book will appeal to scholars of education and social justice as well as school leaders and policy makers.

Democratic Discord in Schools: Cases and Commentaries in Educational Ethics
Teaching in a democracy is challenging and filled with dilemmas that have no easy answers. For example, how do educators meet their responsibilities of teaching civic norms and dispositions while remaining nonpartisan? Democratic Discord in Schools features eight normative cases of complex dilemmas drawn from real events designed to help educators practice the type of collaborative problem solving and civil discourse needed to meet these challenges of democratic education. Each of the cases also features a set of six commentaries written by a diverse array of scholars, educators, policy makers, students, and activists with a range of political views to spark reflection and conversation. Drawing on research and methods developed in the Justice in Schools project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), Democratic Discord in Schools provides the tools that allow educators and others to practice the deliberative skills they need in order to find reasonable solutions to common ethical dilemmas in politically fraught times.

Based on years of hands-on classroom experience and research, Using FIVES for Writing breaks down the steps for both reading with understanding and writing with confidence: Recognizing writing as a Fundamental life skill. Identifying all pre-writing considerations. Visualizing the plan for an ABBC paragraph. Expanding the process to an effective essay. Synthesizing information from multiple sources. The parallel processes of reading and writing are gatekeepers to student success and are essential skills for lifelong learning. Project-Based Learning in the First Year: Beyond All Expectations
This book has two goals: First, to show the value of significant project-based work for first-year undergraduate students; and Second, to share how to introduce this work into first year programs. The authors spend the bulk of the book sharing what they have learned about this practice, including details about the administrative support and logistics required. They have also included sample syllabi, assignments and assessments, and classroom activities. The projects are applicable in a liberal arts education, in engineering programs, in two and four year colleges, in public and private universities-any institution with first year undergraduate students that wants to actively engage them in understanding and solving real-world problems through project work. Evidence shows that project-based learning, with real world, team-based educational experiences, increases the engagement and retention rate of underserved students. Introducing project-based learning in the first year can set the stage for incorporating the culture and practice of inclusive excellence as foundation for learning on college and university campuses.

How Boards Lead Small Colleges
While the media frequently report on threats facing colleges and universities, no sector of higher education is in more danger than private colleges with small endowments and low enrollments. Numerous small private liberal arts colleges could benefit from careful consideration of characteristics and practices of successful trusteeship. In How Boards Lead Small Colleges, Alice Lee Williams Brown and Elizabeth Richmond Hayford focus on small colleges-the kind that seldom attract the attention of researchers. Integrating case studies with theoretical analyses of college governance, they explain the basic responsibilities of boards while demonstrating how some develop practices that fulfill these responsibilities more effectively than others. The book emphasizes strategic planning and collaboration between the board and central administration-advice useful to those governing colleges and universities of all sizes and strengths. For decades, the authors led consortia of small colleges and served on boards of multiple nonprofit organizations. Here, they interview trustees and presidents at dozens of small colleges across multiple states to identify the role governing boards play in building strong private colleges. Encouraging presidents to consider new approaches for working with their boards based on mutual dedication to strengthening institutions, Brown and Hayford also urge trustees to challenge new thinking from their presidents without interfering in internal operations. How Boards Lead Small Colleges is designed to appeal to anyone with a special interest in the future of small private colleges, which play a critical role in the world of higher education.

The Decline in Educational Standards: From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly
The Decline in Educational Standards: From a Public Good to a Quasi-Monopoly is about the commodification of education and the factors that have changed education from a public good into a commodity over the last 50 years. When we look at today's education, we see that academic standards in public education have been declining for decades even as education funding has reached nearly a trillion dollars per year to fund such failed programs as No Child Left Behind and Common Core. Simultaneously, tuition and fees at public universities have increased nearly 2000 percent over the last 30 years, and student loan debt is now a staggering $1.5 trillion. Quite simply, education has become big business. This book examines the various issues associated with the commodification of education, especially neoliberalism and privatized Keynesianism-what they are, how they developed, and how they have affected education and public policy. It argues that neoliberalism and the related socioeconomic shift to debt-based consumerism are at the center of commodification, leading to a significant decline in the exchange value of a college degree. It also argues that we cannot understand the changes in our public and higher education systems without examining the historical, social, economic, and political factors that have essentially created an education system that is significantly different from what it was in the not so distant past.

Politics, Managerialism, and University Governance: Lessons from Hong Kong under China's Rule since 1997
This book explores the interplay between politics, managerialism, and higher education, and the complex linkages between politics and public universities in Hong Kong. Since the mid-20th century, literature on the state, market, and higher education has focused on the state's shifting role from the direct administration to the supervision of higher education, and its increased use of market and managerial principles and techniques to regulate public universities. However, very few studies have addressed the political influences on university governance produced by changing state-university-market relationships, the chancellorship of public universities, or students' and academics' civic engagement with regard to sensitive political issues. The book examines both the positive and problematic outcomes of using market principles and managerialism to reform public higher education; questions the longstanding tradition of university chancellorship; explores the issue of external members holding the majority on university governing boards; probes into the dilemma of either relying on the system or a good chancellor and external members to preserve universities' autonomy and academic freedom; and assesses the cost of students' and academics' civic engagement with regard to politically sensitive issues.

A Little Child Shall Lead Them: A Documentary Account of the Struggle for School Desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia
In the twentieth-century struggle for racial equality, there was perhaps no setting more fraught and contentious than the public schools of the American south. In Prince Edward County, Virginia, in 1951, a student strike for better school facilities became part of the NAACP legal campaign for school desegregation. That step ultimately brought this rural, agricultural county to the Supreme Court of the United States as one of five consolidated cases in the historic 1954 ruling, Brown v. Board of Education. Unique among those cases, Prince Edward County took the extreme stance of closing its public school system entirely rather than comply with the desegregation ruling of the Court. The schools were closed for five years, from 1959 to 1964, until the Supreme Court ruling in Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward County ordered the restoration of public education in the county. This historical anthology brings together court cases, government documents, personal and scholarly writings, speeches, and journalism to represent the diverse voices and viewpoints of the battle in Prince Edward County for-and against-educational equality. Providing historical context and contemporary analysis, this book offers a new perspective of a largely overlooked episode and seeks to help place the struggle for public education in Prince Edward County into its proper place in the civil rights era.

Strategic Organizational Learning: Using System Dynamics for Innovation and Sustained Performance
This book discusses the successes and challenges of leveraging organizational learning in effective strategy development and execution. The authors introduce a framework that helps organizations develop core capabilities to enable them to shift direction rapidly and proactively shape future environments. They also offer a wide selection of cases to illustrate this framework. While some cases highlight fundamental strategic change over time, others are snapshots of mechanisms gradually put in place to jointly optimize learning and performance. There is no one best or right way to leverage strategic organizational learning; different practices may lead to the same outcome and similar practices may lead to different outcomes. The system dynamics underlying such learning - not the simple adoption of one or other practice - are key to success in institutionalizing a performance-based learning approach.

Developing Community Schools, Community Learning Centers, Extended-service Schools and Multi-service Schools: International Exemplars for Practice, Policy and Research
This book focuses on special organizational configurations for schools in diverse parts of the world. Some of these new organizational and institutional designs are called multi-service schools, others are called extended service schools and still others are called community learning centers. While these schools have different names and notable different characteristics, they belong in the same category because of a common feature in their design: they connect schools with once-separate community programs and services.Chief among the prototypes for these new organizational and institutional designs are the ones featured in the book's title. Some are called multi-service schools to indicate that they selectively provide some new programs and services. Others are called extended service schools to indicate that they serve young people beyond the regular school day, seeking influence and control over out-of-school time while enabling alternative teaching-learning strategies, and providing services other than typical pupil support services. Still others are called community learning centers, a name that showcases the educational functions and priorities of schools and announcing priorities for adult learning and development. Community schools, still called in some places full-service community schools, serves as a prototype that increasingly positions schools as multi-purpose, multi-component, anchor institutions serving identifiable neighborhoods and entire rural communities. The book is structured to enhance understanding of these organizational prototypes and provides comparative social analysis. It also identifies knowledge needs and gaps as well as developmental territory for the future.

Absent from School: Understanding and Addressing Absenteeism
In Absent from School, Gottfried and Hutt offer a comprehensive and timely resource for educators and policy makers seeking to understand the scope, impact, and causes of chronic student absenteeism. The editors present a series of studies by leading researchers from a variety of disciplines that address which students are missing school and why, what roles schools themselves play in contributing to or offsetting patterns of absenteeism, and ways to assess student attendance for purposes of school accountability. The contributors examine school-based initiatives that focus on a range of issues, including transportation, student health, discipline policies, and protections for immigrant students, as well as interventions intended to improve student attendance. Only in the past two or three years has chronic absenteeism become the focus of attention among policy makers, civil rights advocates, and educators. Absent from School provides the first critical, systematic look at research that can inform and guide those who are working to ensure that every child is in school and learning every day.

Young Adolescent Engagement in Learning: Supporting Students through Structure and Community
Student engagement is fundamental to learning, yet it also constitutes a major and long-standing challenge to educators around the world. This book provides an evidence-based theorisation of features associated with schooling engagement, along with targeted strategies that underpin a continuum of pedagogical, curricular and social support during the years of young adolescent schooling. Anchored by the Young Adolescent Engagement in Learning Model, a multi-layered model which incorporates a continuum of behavioural, emotional and cognitive dimensions of engagement, the authors provide a framework to help support the engagement of young adolescents. Seamlessly integrating theory and practice, this book explores the importance of avoiding educational disengagement, particularly from those who are most vulnerable due to a range of personal factors. This volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of educational young adolescent engagement and retention, as well as those working with young people.
