Community Equity Audits: Communities and Schools Working Together to Eliminate the Opportunity Gap
This book addresses equity auditing at the community level. The inspiration for the book emerged from two sources. The first was hearing the frustration expressed from school leaders and teachers when trying to address the educational needs of and expectations for their students while also having to contend with the socio-structural issues that function as roadblocks to their success, particularly for low-income students and those living in poverty. These include lack of sufficient housing, exposure to high levels of crime and violence, inadequate fresh and nutritious food, deficient healthcare, and an absence of community resources such as safe play spaces. The second was the realization that many of the citizens within a city or school district are unaware of the disparate conditions among their neighborhoods and communities, including those stakeholders who are in a position to make needed policy changes. The purpose, then, of this book is to provide examples of community equity audits, using geographic information system mapping and other data. These audits create a picture and story of the inequities among communities and the need for community equity audits to raise the awareness of those who can influence policy and practices to create communities that promote the health and well-being of their citizens, most especially their children, so that the opportunity gap can be eliminated and schools can well-educate all of their students. The need for this information is great because schools alone cannot achieve all their educational goals if students and their families are living in circumstances that negatively impact their health, well-being and ultimately their chances to succeed. This book attempts to help practitioners and university faculty address what we believe is the most challenging and important issue in education today-how to ensure that all students have the opportunity and support they need to be successful in school and life.

The purpose of academic advising is to help students select a program of study to meet their life and vocational goals. As such, academic advising is a central and important activity in the process of education. Academic advising occurs at least once each term for every student in the college; few student support functions occur as often or affect so many students. But while there is general agreement concerning the importance of academic advising for the efficient functioning of the institution and the effective functioning of the student, there is little agreement regarding the nature of academic advising and who should perform the function. In this seminal work on academic advising, the authors of three overarching chapters address the key issues and challenges of academic advising followed by the authors of four of the most innovative and successful programs of academic advising in the nation.

The selection of the industrial labor model at the outset of public sector collective bargaining set the table for challenges to its fit with education. The theme of teacher as member of a union and teacher as a professional is explored within the context of a collective bargaining environment. The section Law and Politics in Uncertain Times: Retrenchment and Assault explores the decade of uncertainty. It reviews the industrial union model and within the twin challenges of the conundrum of teacher as union member and professional in the struggles of the decade. In the twenty-first century, EDI goals are increasingly front and center across disciplines as educators prepare students for success in a diverse world. It is in this milieu, that this book was written. Each chapter in this book is designed for use by instructors and administrators in higher education who believe that the goals of EDI should be integrated into the classroom experience. One reason is that it provides a sound protocol to account for the performance of every student. A second reason is that it provides a structure that is useful for figuring out how to refine instruction so that it is individualized to meet each student's needs. While this book can be useful to both beginning and experienced teachers, as well as other professionals who provide direct and indirect services to students, it has been written first and foremost with preservice teachers in mind. It should prove to be useful to these teachers by enabling them to identify the following: 1. the knowledge and skills they need to acquire in their preparation program, 2. the questions they need to be prepared to ask and answer during a job interview, and 3. the work they need to perform in the role they will fill in a school that uses a response-to-intervention framework.

The author co-founded the company known today as Economic Modeling Specialists International (Emsi) nearly 20 years ago. The main reason for starting the company was the existence of a pent-up demand for credible and affordable economic impact studies for community and technical colleges. Over the past 19 years, Emsi has responded to this demand by completing over 2000 such studies for colleges in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The book chronicles the lessons learned over this time period and highlights what an economic impact study is, is not, what the results mean, and why they are important. It also discusses how presidents and governing boards can leverage the impact results to address other issues they deal with on a daily basis. Few college presidents are fully aware of this opportunity, however, and thus do not fully exploit the richness of the study. A strong case is also made that the college leadership should play a much stronger leadership roles in regional economic development of their region in addition to their roles as advocates for their colleges only.

One reason is that it provides a sound protocol to account for the performance of every student. A second reason is that it provides a structure that is useful for figuring out how to refine instruction so that it is individualized to meet each student's needs. While this book can be useful to both beginning and experienced teachers, as well as other professionals who provide direct and indirect services to students, it has been written first and foremost with preservice teachers in mind. It should prove to be useful to these teachers by enabling them to identify the following: 1. the knowledge and skills they need to acquire in their preparation program, 2. the questions they need to be prepared to ask and answer during a job interview, and 3. the work they need to perform in the role they will fill in a school that uses a response-to-intervention framework.

The section Law and Politics in Uncertain Times: Retrenchment and Assault explores the decade of uncertainty. It reviews the industrial union model and within the twin challenges of the conundrum of teacher as union member and professional in the struggles of the decade.
