Stop Bullying Pocketbook
Bullying - Repeated intimidation intentionally carried out by a more powerful person or group in order to cause physical and/or emotional hurtA . It happens in every type of school and in all classes and cultures; it's a problem for thousands of children and increasing numbers of teachers, and it's the reason several young people a year commit suicide. In recent years, a new insidious form of bullying has emerged: cyber bullying. It's the fastest-growing type of bullying, leaving victims vulnerable 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This second edition of the Stop Bullying Pocketbook is about what to do to prevent and stop all forms of bullying in schools. This extensively illustrated book is full of practical suggestions for both teachers and students. For teachers there are in-service training exercises; advice to give parents; practical tips about creating an environment that deters bullies; what to say to bullies and victims and an action plan for creating a bully-free school. A range of awareness-raising ideas for pupils can be readily incorporated into teaching plans, while authoritative chapters on what is known about bullying and on understanding bullies and victims place everything in context. Though firmly advocating adult intervention, the book is equally clear that children and young people need strategies they can use themselves. Numerous ideas and exercises are provided for use with pupils to help them avoid or deflect bullying. These include showing them how to communicate differently; how to say (and shout) no; how to 'fog' insults and what to do about cyber bullying. There are also several simple but effective ideas for interactive work exploring bullying through drama, poetry, story and discussion. Michele Elliott, child psychologist and founder of anti-bullying charity Kidscape, has an OBE for services to children. She draws on 40 years' experience teaching and running Kidscape, has chaired Home Office and WHO Committees and worked with the DCSF, Childline and NSPCC.

Teacher Leadership: The New Foundations of Teacher Education : A Reader
Over the past two decades, numerous textbooks have been published on teacher leadership; however, this is the only volume that provides a definitive overview of the scholarship and writing being done in the field of teacher leadership. This book introduces the reader to the scholarship of over 35 authors, and thus, becomes an essential tool needed to guide any meaningful discussion of the changing roles and responsibilities of teachers. As an important component of revisioned teacher education programs and most current state standards for teacher licensure, teacher leadership is emerging as a central theme in all foundations of education classes. This book acknowledges the important role of teacher leadership in the reform of schools and discusses teacher leadership within the context of teachers' work. Organized around six key topics, the book explores the many facets of teacher leadership and examines the impact of teacher leadership on school culture, student learning, professional learning communities and 21st century schools. Additional references and website links are also provided. Teacher Leadership: The New Foundations of Teacher Education - a Reader is intended for undergraduate and graduate education students.

How to Assess Higher-Order Thinking Skills in Your Classroom
Educators know it's important to get students to engage in "higher-order thinking." But what does higher-order thinking actually look like? And how can K-12 classroom teachers assess it across the disciplines? Author, consultant, and former classroom teacher Susan M. Brookhart answers these questions and more in this straightforward, practical guide to assessment that can help teachers determine if students are actually displaying the kind of complex thinking that current content standards emphasize. Brookhart begins by laying out principles for assessment in general and for assessment of higher-order thinking in particular. She then defines and describes aspects of higher-order thinking according to the categories established in leading taxonomies, giving specific guidance on how to assess students in the following areas: * Analysis, evaluation, and creation * Logic and reasoning * Judgment * Problem solving * Creativity and creative thinking Examples drawn from the National Assessment of Educational Progress and from actual classroom teachers include multiple-choice items, constructed-response (essay) items, and performance assessment tasks. Readers will learn how to use formative assessment to improve student work and then use summative assessment for grading or scoring. Aimed at elementary, middle, and high school teachers in all subject areas, How to Assess Higher-Order Thinking Skills in Your Classroom provides essential background, sound advice, and thoughtful insight into an area of increasing importance for the success of students in the classroom--and in life.

Women as Headteachers: Striking the Balance
Leadership is generally identified with men. Only a quarter of the secondary school heads in England and Wales are women. Despite changes in society, there are still issues for women who aspire to leadership in schools. Some of those tackled here are: Will I be up against institutionalized views that make my career progress difficult? Will I have to be seen to lead like a man if I am going to be considered a good headteacher? Will I have credibility as a leader and manager if I combine motherhood and a career? How will men react to being managed by a woman? There are also issues for schools and their senior managers, related to encouraging women to go to the top, such as: What career support and advice are we offering? Are we offering appropriate role models? How do we view maternity leave? Are we family friendly? The author's survey of women headteachers in England and Wales plus in-depth interviews present the views of the women who have become leaders in schools. Complementary data from the same number of male headteachers allows comparisons to be drawn between the careers and the perceptions of work and family of men and women heads, shedding light on the many issues explored.

Privatising the Public University: The Case of Law
Privatising the Public University: The Case of Law is the first full-length critical study examining the impact of the dramatic reforms that have swept through universities over the last two decades. Drawing on extensive research and interviews in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada, Margaret Thornton considers the impact of the market on students, academics and law schools, documenting how both the curriculum and pedagogical methods have changed. If the passing of the idea of the university is rued, concern usually focuses on the humanities and the natural sciences. In this respect, law has been regarded as privileged because of the virtually unstoppable demand for law places and the willingness of students to pay high fees. And, as this book shows, it is commercial and instrumental forms of legal training that are now favoured, whilst the humanistic, critical, theoretical and social justice aspects of legal knowledge have been corroded. Privatising the Public University will be of considerable interest to legal academics; but it will also be invaluable work for anyone interested in the future of higher education, or, more generally, in the corporatization of culture.

Whatever Happened to Progressivism?: The Demise of Child-centred Education in Modern Britain
In this professorial lecture Roy Lowe highlights important research on the debate on teaching in Britain in the post-Second World War era. He begins by reflecting on recent trends in the study of history of education and goes on to argue the need for research which is socially aware and sensitive to the political and social trends that underlie classroom practice. He also suggests that historians of education have something to say about the wider issues confronting the global community at this time. This lecture shows how stereotypes have developed around ways we perceive developments in teaching since 1944 and then suggests the need for a new look at the debate on the school curriculum. Important new research evidence is used to provide fresh insights into the debate on how children should be taught and what they should be taught in the years following the Second World War.

India Infrastructure Report 2012: Private Sector in Education
Today, India's education sector remains a victim of poor policies, restrictive regulations and orthodoxy. Despite being enrolled in schools, children are not learning adequately. Increasingly, parents are seeking alternatives through private inputs in school and tuition. Students are dropping out from secondary school in spite of high financial returns of secondary education, and those who do complete it have inferior conceptual knowledge. Higher education is over-regulated and under-governed, keeping away serious private providers and reputed global institutes. Graduates from high schools, colleges and universities are not readily employable, and few are willing to pay for skill development. Ironically, the Right to Education Act, if strictly enforced, will result in closure of thousands of non-state schools, and millions of poor children will be left without access to education. Eleventh in the series, India Infrastructure Report 2012 discusses challenges in the education sector - elementary, secondary, higher, and vocational - and explores strategies for constructive change and opportunities for the private sector. It suggests that immediate steps are required to reform the sector to reap the benefits from India's `demographic dividend' due to a rise in the working age population. Result of a collective effort led by the IDFC Foundation, this Report brings together a range of perspectives from academics, researchers and practitioners committed to enhancing educational practices. It will be an invaluable resource for policymakers, researchers and corporates.

Strengthening the Heartbeat: Leading and Learning Together in Schools
Study after study has concluded that no matter how competently managed a school may be, it is the bringing together of leadership and learning that makes the difference between ordinary and extraordinary performance. Strengthening the Heartbeat offers leaders a clear and compelling way to help their schools achieve extraordinary results. The proven principles outlined in this book can help any school build a culture of leadership and learning. Thomas J. Sergiovanni a leading thinker in the educational leadership arena shows how a strong heartbeat is a school's best defense against the obstacles leaders face as they work to change schools for the better. But strengthening the heartbeat of schools requires that we rethink what leadership is, how leadership works, what leadership's relationship is to learning, and why we need to practice both leadership and learning together.Filled with illustrative examples, Strengthening the Heartbeat shows how to build trust that leads to the creation of a vision and the building of a covenant that brings together principals, teachers, parents, and students to honor shared values, goals, and beliefs. When leaders are able to strengthen the heartbeat, their schools become stronger and more resilient. These qualities help leaders to share the burdens of leadership with others, to create collaborative cultures, and to be continuous learners. Leadership inevitably involves change and change inevitably involves learning. Using this book, school leaders will have the tools they need to make their schools the best they can be.

Summerhill and A S Neill
'Summerhill remains unique and different! Its underlying principles and its founding beliefs have informed and influenced generations of teachers in both sectors. It will continue to do so' - Professor Tim Brighouse, Commissioner for London Schools. Summerhill is a world-renowned school in England where pupils decide when and what they will learn. The school was established in 1921 by A.S. Neill, who was named by the Times Educational Supplement in 1999 as one of the twelve most influential educators of the 20th Century. Known as 'the oldest children's democracy in the world', Summerhill allows pupils to air their views, propose new school rules and construct future plans for life at the school at the regular school meeting. This unique book contains key extracts from Neill's classic text Summerhill , a worldwide bestseller since its publication in 1962, and features contributions from A.S. Neill's daughter, Zoe Neill Readhead, who is the current Principal. She updates the story of the school - larger and more vibrant than ever before - from Neill's death in 1973 to the present day. In his contribution, Tim Brighouse discusses some of the ways in which the influence of Summerhill and A.S. Neill still extends throughout the world today. Ian Stronach, who acted as expert witness during the infamous court case, tells the story of the British Government's attempt to force untenable changes or close down the school in 2001, and the school's subsequent landmark victory in the Royal Courts of Justice. The book offers a truly inspiring account of a remarkable school, which promotes progressive change in the way pupils are taught and shows how real experiences of democracy can be created for young people. It is essential reading for teachers and trainee teachers, headteachers and school leaders, local education authorities and parents.
