Implicit Bias in Schools: A Practitioner's Guide
Implicit bias is often recognized as one of the reasons for instances of discrimination and injustice, despite most people explicitly believing in the importance of equality and justice for all people. Implicit Bias in Schools provides practitioners with an understanding of implicit bias and how to address it from start to finish: what it is, how it is a problem, and how we can fix it. Grounded in an accessible summary of research on bias and inequity in schools, this book bridges the research-to-practice gap by exploring how implicit bias affects students and what school leaders can do to mitigate the effects of bias in their schools. Covering issues of discipline, instruction, academic achievement, mindfulness, data collection, and culturally relevant practices, and full of rich examples and strategies, Implicit Bias in Schools is a must-have resource for educators today. Supplemental material, including links to resources mentioned in the text, tools, and worksheets to assist your journey when implementing strategies at your own school can be found at www.routledge.com/9781138497061.

Educational Leadership: Culture and Diversity
`A highly recommendable and powerful work...I have found this book to be both a revelatory mirror on past events and an inviting window to future prospects. I am certain that it will be of equal or greater value to all those involved and interested in the tangled complexities, and inherent rewards, of educational leadership, particularly within international or cross-cultural contexts' - Daniel H. Jarvis, International Review of Education `Clive Dimmock and Allan Walker's books is a valuable addition to the overcrowded literature on leadership. This is a useful and important book because citizenship, globalization and the tensions with nationality should be the concern of all who lead any school; even monofaith, monoethic and monolingual schools' - Tim Brighouse, TES Friday 'The authors offer a rigorous and systematic analysis based on careful definition, illustration and discussion which demonstrates the importance of understanding culture, leadership and their interaction in different contexts: in doing so they provide a powerful antidote to the simplistic export of ideas and lay foundations for a more sophisticated conceptual framework for the study of educational leadership' - John West-Burnham, International Leadership Centre, University of Hull This key text in educational leadership focuses on the significance of the context and culture of schools. The book addresses the growing recognition of cultural differences between societies and the resultant differences in schooling. It also deals with vital issues relating to multicultural education and the leadership of multicultural schools. Drawing on their first-hand experience, the authors explore the differences evident in classroom teaching and learning, as well as organizational, leadership and management aspects of schools. They show how such differences can make over-reliance on Anglo-American approaches misleading, ineffective and restrictive. Key features of the book include: - a methodology to support the emerging field of international and comparative educational leadership and management - in-depth comparative analysis of Anglo-American and Asian schooling and educational management - the leadership of multi-cultural schools This book is essential reading for professionals and students of educational leadership and management, as well as administrators.

The Sociology of School Organization: Contemporary Sociology of the School
First published in 1983, this volume assembles recent theory on school organization, drawing on a wide range of research, mainly on schools in contemporary Britain but with some illuminating historical and overseas comparisons. It examines elements of organization both within and outside the school, and shows how they vary with the age, sex, ethnicity and social class of pupils, as well as school size and efficiency. It argues how, with understanding, organizational patterns may be changed to respond to new objectives and how they may become more effective and responsive to human needs in schools and classrooms.

Management Theories for Educational Change
`This is an exceptional book. It tempted me to throw out most of my collected works on the management of change, because the author has somehow succeeded by including almost every aspect of educational change that any practitioner would wish to consider....Overall this is a very stimulating book. It is packed with information and the ideas and concepts contained could pack a school development plan for many years' - School Leadership and Management The theories and practices from the literature on business, manufacturing and commerce which inform principles for managing change in education are identified in this book. The author shows how the complexity of change can be addressed effectively. One principle of effective management of change is its potential to empower the individuals and organizations, its power to create and operate win/win situations. That can only be done by addressing the human side of organizations. The strength of the business literature is that far from advocating the austere, over-rationalized, dehumanized and objective pursuit of profit at all costs, it suggests that the effective management of change is an affirmation of the humanity of business.

International Handbook of Lifelong Learning
Recent changes in the world effected by the transformations of information technology, globalisation, and the move towards a knowledge economy over the last thirty years have been as radical and fundamental as the changes resulting from the invention of the wheel and the printing press. We are now living in a new age in which the demands are so complex, so multifarious and so rapidly changing that the only way in which we shall be able to survive them is by committing to a process of individual, communal, and global learning throughout the lifespan of all of us. A number of international bodies and agencies have taken cognisance of these transformations and the demands they impose upon societies and communities of the twenty-first century and have developed and articulated policies intended to enable all citizens of the world in the twenty-first century to face these challenges. It is now a declared policy of many governments and international agencies that the only vehicle for such preparation is `education, education, education', and that preparing for the knowledge economy and the learning society of the future has to be a lifelong undertaking, an investment in the future that is not restricted merely to the domain of economic advancement but also to those of social inclusion and personal growth. Realising this, policy-makers across the international arena are grappling with the need to move from systems that emphasise education and training to the radically more unworked construct of lifelong learning. In this volume the editors and authors analyse, criticise, and rework the ideas, principles, and theories underpinning policies and programs of lifelong learning, re-interpreting them in the light of examples of `best practice' found in a range of educating institutions around the world. We believe that students of educational change and community development will find it useful and helpful to have available in this volume some of the most up-to-date thinking on the chief concepts, theories, and values of increasing policy interest in lifelong learning, together with a review of some significant examples of the different forms, focuses, and nexuses of thought and practice on this topic. All this enables us to offer some policy recommendations and practical suggestions as to ways forward in the endeavour to make lifelong learning a reality for all.

Intellectual Property in the Information Age: Knowledge as Commodity and Its Legal Implications for Higher Education: ASHE Higher Education Report
This monograph pays special attention to the intellectual property of copyrights and patents. It examines how legal parameters, competing interests, and technological advances take shape in economic, political, and social contexts that require colleges and universities make intellectual property central to their operations. Economic, political and social forces are redefining knowledge as property that can be owned, and institutions of higher education, as producers of knowledge, are central participants of this phenomenon. Debates about intellectual property are rampant, some arguing that knowledge should not become a commodity for exchange, others than intellectual property fosters innovation in society. What is not debatable is the importance of the law for resolving disputes about intellectual property. Today, the evolving legal context association with intellectual property and technological advancements have created competing interests and demands from individuals, institutions and even nation. The law is often the realm in which these interests and disputes take place, with more or less satisfying results. Colleges and universities must grapple with not only complex legal issues but also the philosophical and political consequences associated with the conversation of intellectual acts into property. This is the fourth issue in the 34th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report . Each monograph in the series is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education problem, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Maximum Security: Culture of Violence in Inner-city Schools
Escalations in student violence continue throughout the American nation, but inner-city schools are the hardest hit, with classrooms and corridors infected by the anger, aggression, and criminality endemic to street life. Technological surveillance, security personnel, and paramilitary control tactics to maintain order and safety are the common administrative response. Based on years of frontline experience in New York's inner-city schools, this text seeks to demonstrate that such policing strategies are not only ineffectual, they divorce students and teachers from their ethical and behavioural responsibilities.

This study of education for freedmen following Emancipation is the definitive treatment of the subject. Employing a wide range of sources, Robert C. Morris examines the organizations that staffed and managed black schools in the South, with particular attention paid to the activities of the Freedman's Bureau. He looks as well at those who came to teach, a diverse group - white, black, Northern, Southern - and at the curricula and textbooks they used. While giving special emphasis to the Freedmen's Bureau school program, Morris places the freedmen's educational movement fully in its nineteenth-century context, relating it both to the antislavery crusade that preceded it and to the conservative era of race relations that followed.

Higher Education: Handbook of Theory and Research
This title consists of 19 essays dealing with the medical knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside of the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Indian, Egyptian, and Tibetan medicine, the book includes essays on comparing Chinese and western medicine and religion. The essays address the connections between medicine and culture and relate the medical practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay is well illustrated and contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book should fill a gap in both the history of medicine and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups.

Saving America's School Infrastructure
Beautiful, vivacious and fearless, Agnes Leclerc was 21 years old when she met Prince Felix Salm, a Prussian officer in the Union Army at the outbreak of the US Civil War. Their marriage took Agnes from small-town America to the royal palaces of Europe. She accompanied Felix on his Civil War campaigns, followed him to Mexico to fight for Emperor Maximilian, then returned home to his ancestral castle in Germany and war with France. Presidents, governors and generals succumbed to her charms. She pleaded with the implacable Benito Juarez for Maximilian's life and the German Kaiser honoured her for her heroism during the Franco-Prussian War. Although Felix's life was cut short in 1870, Agnes lived out the rest of her life as a stately European aristocrat.

Substance, Judgment and Evaluation: Seeking the Worth of a Liberal Arts, Core Text Education selectively presents the thoughts of scholars and teachers of liberal arts, core text education on how their programs formulate and advance a value-centered education. What emerges from this selection is the wide scope of core text programs underlying the semantic intention of words such as value-centered, judgment, or even liberal arts or collegiate and colleague. This volume records the cooperation and thoughtful consideration of faculty from a wide range of higher education institutions - research universities, comprehensive universities, colleges, and community colleges - who have chosen to come together to form such programs across North America. This volume should be of value to any dean, director, or faculty member who seeks to work with colleagues and texts across disciplines to form a coherent undergraduate program of study within general education.

Despite previous books on the topic, bullying continues to thrive, becoming more sophisticated and poses serious problems for school populations in both primary and post-primary sectors. This book is the first review of bullying in Irish education written by researchers and practitioners working in the field. The appeal of this book is twofold. Firstly, it explores bullying from different perspectives within education namely, pupils, teachers and principals. School Resegregation: Must the South Turn Back?
Public education at the crossroads Confronting a reality that many policy makers would prefer to ignore, contributors to this volume offer the latest information on the trend toward the racial and socioeconomic resegregation of southern schools. In the region that has achieved more widespread public school integration than any other since 1970, resegregation, combined with resource inequities and the current accountability movement, is now bringing public education in the South to a critical crossroads. In thirteen essays, leading thinkers in the field of race and public education present not only the latest data and statistics on the trend toward resegregation but also the legal and policy analysis of why these trends are accelerating, how they are harmful, and what can be done to counter them. What's at stake is the quality of education available to both white and nonwhite students, they argue. This volume will help educators, policy makers, and concerned citizens begin a much-needed dialogue about how America can best educate its increasingly multiethnic student population in the twenty-first century.

Are Charters Different?: Public Education, Teachers, and the Charter School Debate
In his new book, Zachary W. Oberfield investigates the question of whether charter schools cultivate different teaching climates from those found in traditional public schools. To answer this question, Oberfield examined hundreds of thousands of teacher surveys from across the nation. The result is a trenchant analysis that deepens our understanding of what the charter experiment means for the future of US public education. Are Charters Different? shows that the teaching climates of charter and public schools do differ in important ways and explores the relative strengths and weaknesses of each. In addition, the book inquires into critical differences within the charter sector, between for-profit and nonprofit charters, and between independently operated schools and those that are part of educational management organizations. Ultimately, the book argues, the choice between charter and public schools should be more about what we value in public education and consider acceptable trade-offs.
