The Inevitable Solar School: Building the Sustainable Schools of the Future, Today
The Inevitable Solar School: Building the Sustainable School of the Future, Today describes the two major forces that are driving public and private schools and other buildings to solar energy. These forces are the recognition of climate change and the cost advantage of on-site solar energy. Either force would be sufficient reason on its own to change the school market, but in combination they become indominable. Sustainability has emerged as a widely accepted theme in school building design. Daylight and views, indoor air quality, responsible life-cycle materials selection, and energy and water efficiency are expected features. This book adds on-site solar energy, sufficient in many instances to meet all of a school's energy requirement, as a critical element of sustainability. The zero energy school is the sustainable school of the future. Contrary to common expectations, zero energy sustainable schools are being built at costs that are competitive with regional school cost averages. This outcome requires teamwork between school administrators and their design and construction professionals, and the use of deliberate planning and procurement processes. Five case studies spanning the U.S. demonstrate that the sustainable school of the future is here today.

The book's twenty chapters, written by leading experts in the field, describe ways in which traditional methods must be adapted to the new environment and highlight new strategies that are growing in importance. This book is focused on higher education and institutions in the United States but many of the topics it considers are important to independent schools and other types of institutions and to the practice of advancement around the world.

International Schooling and Education in the 'New Era': Emerging Issues
International Education in its International Schooling mode of operation is still an under-reported and largely under-researched area of education. However, it is undeniably no longer a peripheral player and has proven historically to be both financially successful, and commercially attractive. It subsequently continues to grow in both scale and diversity, reaching 9,000 schools in 2017. The next decade, until 2027, looks set to see unprecedented growth with the number of schools, children, staff, and fee income all doubling in size. This book explores the main driving forces behind this growth. Dr Bunnell argues that a 'New Era' of unprecedented growth still looks set to appear and explores the complex driving forces behind this expansion. He uncovers the set of inter-connected perceived 'guarantees' that are emerging, driving both the supply and demand which appears at first glance to be a very strong platform for growth. However, this work fulfils a need to get beneath the data and reveals the foundations of this enormous future growth to be rather precarious. Given its in depth insight into international schooling, this book will prove invaluable to researchers and education practitioners alike.

Place, Belonging and School Leadership: Researching to Make the Difference
Place, Belonging and School Leadership offers research findings, analysis and accessible tools for further research inquiry that are designed to contribute to the development of professional learning communities. Researching about place and belonging, Kathryn Riley argues, gives new teachers powerful insights into children's experiences in the classroom and playground, and encourages them to review and change their professional practices. It provides young people with a vehicle to voice their experiences, grow their skill and talents, and develop a sense of agency. Place, Belonging and School Leadership helps school leaders to be 'place-makers' who make 'belonging' work for pupils from many different backgrounds. It builds trust, develops the knowledge and capacities of staff, and harnesses the creative potential of young people to explore, reflect and act. Riley offers an invaluable leadership tool that strengthens school cultures and nourishes leadership throughout the school.

Accountable Schools: Succeeding Today in the Competitive Marketplace
The majority of students are required to attend their neighborhood public school unless their parents apply to an alternate program such as private and charter schools. Seldom is a comprehensive measurement program in place for parents to assist them in determining whether their local school is providing quality educational services and, when a reporting system is in place, an unbiased evaluation is lacking. This book demonstrates how parents can make informed choices regarding their local school or others within their community. The accountability model presented was highly rated by the U.S. Department of Education and its approach is used in Alberta and California. Fixed boundaries should be replaced and all schools labeled as magnet centers with locally developed mission statements to attract students without transportation costs. Democratizing the workplace is as necessary as democratizing our schools so that workers are recognized and rewarded according to their team's performance.

Educational Records: A Practical Guide for Legal Compliance
Since the passage of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) regulating of the maintenance and dissemination of educational records, educators have struggled to meet federal compliance requirements while operating in the daily realities of public schools. Such practices as determining whether a child's cumulative file could be accessed, by whom, and for what purposes suddenly became a matter of federal law. Legal compliance became more elusive in the late 1990's and in the first decade of the twenty-first century with the fracturing of the 'family,' the passage of other state and federal laws regulating records security, and through computer technology posing unique security challenges to record integrity and maintenance. Until now, educators lacked a single volume resource for directly and confidently answering their questions. In Educational Records, Murphy and Dishman provide educators with a readily accessible, jargon-free source for legal questions concerning educational records. The book's question-and-answer format, as well as its analysis of court opinions and opinion letters of the United States Department of Education's Family Policy Compliance Office, provides educators with the resource they need to quickly and authoritatively address records issues.

Handbook of Education Politics and Policy
This revised edition of the Handbook of Education Politics and Policy presents the latest research and theory on the most important topics within the field of the politics of education. Well-known scholars in the fields of school leadership, politics, policy, law, finance, and educational reform examine the institutional backdrop to our educational system, the political behaviors and cultural influences operating within schools, and the ideological and philosophical positions that frame discussions of educational equity and reform. In its second edition, this comprehensive handbook has been updated to capture recent developments in the politics of education, including Race to the Top and the Common Core State Standards, and to address the changing role politics play in shaping and influencing school policy and reform. Detailed discussions of key topics touch upon important themes in educational politics, helping leaders understand issues of innovation, teacher evaluation, tensions between state and federal lawmakers over new reforms and testing, and how to increase student achievement. Chapter authors also provide suggestions for improving the political behaviors of key educational groups and individuals with the hope that an understanding of political goals, governance processes, and policy outcomes may contribute to ongoing school reform.

Teacher Preparation in Career Pathways: The Future of America's Teacher Pipeline
Teacher Preparation in Career Pathways: The Future of America's Teacher Pipeline offers a critical and timely discussion of what teacher preparation should look like in the twenty-first century and why. Embry-Jenlink speaks directly of decreasing quality in America's teacher workforce and the dismal recruitment of teachers from historically underrepresented and underserved populations. The voices of deans, faculty, school administrators, and directors of non-profit agencies resound with an emerging workforce solution, Teacher Preparation in Career Pathways. The authors showcase five diverse teacher pipeline programs that address the staffing demands in high need schools through grow your own approaches as they explore policy issues, resource sharing, accountability, and promoting successful postsecondary student transfer across articulated teacher preparation programs. Teacher Preparation in Career Pathways is the first book of its kind to profile an emerging, innovative approach to teacher preparation in the twenty-first century-teacher preparation that is designed around collaborative and sustainable P-16 partnerships among school districts, colleges, and universities to strategically address persistent issues of building teacher quality, capacity, and diversity.

Integrating Pedagogy and Technology: Improving Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Integrating Teaching and Technology: A Matrix for Professional Faculty Development provides college faculty and administrators with the foundations for a new model for integrating the two most critical dimensions of teaching and learning, pedagogy and technology: the Integrated Readiness Matrix (IRM). Integrating Teaching and Technology began as dialogue among the authors and their university peers focusing on how best to integrate technology into instruction. Achieving this goal requires all faculty to be conversant with the theories of learning, the taxonomies and domains of learning, and a new methodology for preparing and developing college faculty for a career of classroom teaching. Only by building on a foundation of educational theories can we meet students where they are while designing instruction that fosters student growth and achievement.

Professional Development Schools: Creative Solutions for Educators
This book is intended as a guide for practitioners interested in forming alliances within their community to support teacher and student success. Under the umbrella of a professional development school (PDS), school principals willing to engage in this type of partnership have access to a framework for school renewal. Within this school/university framework lie four critical factors that transform the ways in which teachers' teach and schools' function. The professional development school model takes a holistic approach to revitalizing schools by sharing knowledge, resources, practices, and the collaborative efforts of P-12 educators and the higher education community. Through the collective wisdom of P-12 and university educators, PDSs provide a new way to think about teaching and a rich environment for learning.

School District Master Planning: A Practical Guide to Demographics and Facilities Planning
What is school district master planning? This book explains how this planning is done, using a proven process, not theories. The process helps you avoid cost overruns, public outrage, repeated redistricting, and classrooms built in wrong places that all represent poor planning. Planning tools, steps and process check lists are discussed in rich detail, using actual case studies and the planning triangle of programs, demographics and facilities. Process roles are explained for district staff, consultants, and the public at each step. Steps are clearly explained for acquiring, analyzing, and applying critical data to drive planning to redistrict, build, close, renovate or expand schools. Steps are carefully explained for developing the comprehensive master plan and getting it implemented on time and within budget. This book pulls no punches as to what usually goes wrong and why, along with what must be done, step by step, to avoid such mistakes. It is a guide to developing a district master plan that will work out for the long term and promote public support for public education. **Instructors, be sure to check out the companion piece: School District Master Planning: The Teaching Supplement.**

Excellence, Equity, and Efficiency: How Principals and Policymakers Can Survive the Triangle of Tension
Public education in America has undergone a vast series of changes during the last four decades. The majority of these changes are driven by policy-the most recent, No Child Left Behind-but regardless of laws passed, principals and school leaders across the country are scrambling to discover ways to unleash the next breakthrough in public education-success for all. In many parts of the country, that success must come on dwindling resources. Over the years much has been written about excellence, equity, and efficiency. The ongoing struggle for administrators and educational leaders is to discover how these apparent conflicting values can not only be survived but also managed to produce unprecedented results in school improvement. Excellence, Equity, and Efficiency presents a Quality School Improvement (QSI) framework for overcoming the conflict that exists between these values and provides recommendations for principals and policymakers to meet the demands for accountability and continuous improvement based upon that framework. Researched and written by a fulltime practicing principal in the field, this book: documents hundreds of actual events and struggles that principals have faced while attempting to manage the demands these values present, includes a story of the author's school and district that is successfully rejecting both the notion of social promotion and retention in their attempt to reconcile excellence, equity, and efficiency through the concept of priority leadership.
