The World According to Karl: The Wit and Wisdom of Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Lagerfeld is a modern master of couture. He is also famously outspoken: his wise, surprising statements pop up like offbeat news flashes. This collection of quotations pays homage to the legendary eminence grise of the fashion world. Lagerfeld's pronouncements - on fashion, women, art, politics, love, and life high and low - are famously oracular, seized upon by fashionistas, acolytes and sages around the world. Created with the full approval of the designer himself, this cornucopia of Lagerfeld's maxims is required reading for us all today as we negotiate the trickiest curves of modern life. Cultivated, unpredictable, provocative, sometimes shocking, Lagerfeld's `bons mots' are always impossible to ignore.

Fashion Image Revolution
For more than 30 years, Brian Dowling's studio was the birthplace of some of the most remarkable fashion photography ever created. In his Islington darkroom, using specialist analog equipment, Dowling shepherded amazing images from negative to paper captured by the likes of Anton Corbijn, Juergen Teller, and Nick Knight. Dowling's BDI studio was also responsible for a number of technical innovations in color photography, paving the way for many of today's digital effects. This tribute to Dowling includes extensive interviews, commentary, testimonials from his clients, and numerous examples of iconic haute couture photographs that passed through his hands. In addition, a series of photographs specially commissioned for this volume demonstrate Dowling's groundbreaking techniques: cross-processing, masking, filtering, layering light, and color fades. Dowling's hands-on achievements and alchemic talents are showcased in this beautiful ode to fashion photography.

Color Theory for the Makeup Artist: Understanding Color and Light for Beauty and Special Effects
Color Theory for the Make-up Artist: Understanding Color and Light for Beauty and Special Effects analyzes and explains traditional color theory for fine artists and applies it to the make-up artist. This book is suitable for both professionals and beginners who wish to train their eye further to understand and recognize distinctions in color. It explains why we see color, how to categorize and identify color, relationships between colors, and it relates these concepts to beauty and special effects make-up. The book teaches the reader how to mix flesh tones by using only primary colors, and explains how these colors in paints and make-up are sourced and created. It also discusses the reason for variations in skin colors and undertones, and how to identify and match these using make-up, while choosing flattering colors for the eyes, lips, and cheeks. Colors found inside the body are explained for special effects make-up, like why we bruise, bleed, or appear sick. Ideas and techniques are also described for painting prosthetics, in addition to using color as inspiration in make-up designs. The book also discusses how lighting affects color on film, television, theater, and photography sets, and how to properly light a workspace for successful applications.

Styling South Asian Youth Cultures: Fashion, Media & Society
For South Asia, fashion and consumption have come to play an increasingly important role in the lives of young people and in the formation of youth cultures. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have all, in related and distinctive ways, been producing confident young fashion consumers, who are proving to be an important market for fashion. This book explores South Asian youth cultures and fashion across the countries of this region and their diasporas from a transnational perspective. Through visual and textual analysis of film, photography and digital cultures, as well as ethnographic fieldwork, the expert contributors look at how gender, sexuality, class, the media and faith intersect with and style youth cultures. By establishing the heterogeneous nature of South Asia and its youth cultures, they also dismantle grand western narratives that tend to understand the region's diverse cultural modernity through the lens of homogeneity.

Marc Jacobs: Unseen
Entering fashion history in 1993 with his notorious `grunge' collection for Perry Ellis, Marc Jacobs would soon be hailed by American Vogue as `the dauphin of grungy, understated cool'. He quickly rose to become one of the most influential designers of his generation, both at the helm of his own label and as creative director of Louis Vuitton from 1998 to 2014. Known for his collaborations with prominent artists, musicians and muses - from Stephen Sprouse to Sonic Youth, Debbie Harry, Sofia Coppola and Chloe Sevigny, Marc Jacobs `changed what it means to be a fashion designer, just as once upon a time Andy Warhol changed what it meant to be an artist', according to fashion historian Valerie Steele. Opening with an essay on the designer's work, Marc Jacobs: Unseen unfolds chronologically, revisiting the designer's most iconic creations and revealing previously unseen behind-the-scenes moments of models, hairdressers, stylists, make-up artists and Marc Jacobs himself at their most creative. Robert Fairer's stunning and highenergy photographs capture the youth, glamour and spirit that defined Jacobs's shows.

Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Colour
Today, with the advent of `millennial pink', the colour formerly associated with Barbie has acquired a new identity. Nor is this the first time the symbolism of pink has been radically transformed. In this volume, in collaboration with a major exhibition at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, curator and fashion historian Valerie Steele explores the history and significance of pink in fashion, art and culture from the 18th century to the present. Steele and her co-authors tell the whole story of his controversial colour, emphasizing how its meanings changed throughout the centuries and across the globe, in cultures as diverse as France, India, Japan, Mexico and the United States. In 18th-century France, men and women alike wore pink, which was a fashionably `new' colour. A century later, however, pink had become feminized and eroticized in the West (although it took longer for pink-versus-blue gender coding to develop). Pink is beautifully illustrated, with illustrations of stunning pink fashions given context by photographs, advertisements and works of art. It features essays by scholars across the disciplines, giving readers access to a wealth of research into subjects as diverse as Hollywood films and the symbolism of the pink triangle. This book will appeal to all those interested in fashion and culture, as well as those who love pink.

Perfectly attuned to the rising interest and market for men's style, The Parisian Gentleman presents the leading men's style-makers, from hidden ateliers and little-known studios to internationally renowned names such as shirtmakers Charvet, shoe-makers Berluti and recently revived trunkmakers Moynat. The stories of each house, and the creatives and craftsmen behind them, bring alive the clothes, capture fading traditions, and celebrate an unceasing dedication to quality. Hugo Jacomet personally knows many of the leaders of these sought-after marques, many of which are difficult to access, so the portrait he paints of each maker derives from first-hand knowledge. Impeccable photography, much of which was shot exclusively for this publication, provides an exquisite complement to the words. An essential addition to the well-dressed man's private wardrobe and collection.

Fashion in the Middle Ages
From the costly velvets and furs worn by kings to the undyed wools and rough linens of the peasantry, the clothing worn by the various classes in the Middle Ages played an integral role in medieval society. In addition to providing clues to status, profession, and/or geographic origin, textiles were a crucial element in the economies of many countries and cities. Much of what is known about medieval fashion is gleaned from the pages of manuscripts, which serve as a rich source of imagery. This volume provides a detailed look at both the actual fabrics and composition of medieval clothing as well as the period's attitude toward fashion through an exploration of illuminated manuscripts in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The last portion of the book is dedicated to the depiction of clothing in biblical times and the ancient world as seen through a medieval lens. Throughout, excerpts from literary sources of the period help shed light on the perceived role and function of fashion in daily life.

Balenciaga in Black: The Black Work
Balenciaga in Black explores the creative genius of Cristobal Balenciaga, the couturier s couturier the fashion designer revered by all other fashion designers. Black served as inspiration and guiding principal for the legendary dressmaker and provided a rich canvas for this extraordinary technician, allowing him to develop new textures and innovative shapes. To Balenciaga black was a vibrant material, alternately opaque or transparent, matte or shining, combined in sumptuous fabrics and undergirding the apparent simplicity of his cuts. Pierre Even s photography of Balenciaga s masterworks, produced specifically for this catalog, capture these subtle gradations in tone and lush details with contemporary precision. Fifty pieces from the Galliera Collection and the Balenciaga archives, including daywear, cocktail dresses or evening ensembles, lined in silk taffeta, fringed with satin ribbons, jet pearls, sequins, are revealed as never before. These contemporary photographs are presented alongside historical portfolios by legendary fashion photographers Richard Avedon, Henry Clarke, and Irving Penn to form three distinct sections: Balenciaga s volumes, interplay of black and light, and combinations of black with subtle colors. Balenciaga s specific materials and shapes are further illuminated by texts, sketches, and detailed captions.

House of Fashion: Haute Couture and the Modern Interior
Since Charles Fredrick Worth established his luxurious Maison de Couture in 1858, the interior has played a crucial role in the display of fashion. House of Fashion provides a full historical account of the interplay between fashion and the modern interior, demonstrating how they continue to function as a site for performing modern, gendered identities for designers and their clientele alike. In doing so, it traces how designers including Poiret, Vionnet, Schiaparelli and Dior used commercial spaces and domestic interiors to enhance their credentials as connoisseurs of taste and style. Taking us from the early years of haute couture to the luxury fashion of the present day, Berry explores how the salon, the atelier and the boutique have allowed fashion to move beyond the aesthetics of dress, to embrace the visual seduction of the theatrical, artistic, and the exotic. From the Art Deco allure of Coco Chanel's Maison to the luminous spaces of contemporary flagship stores, House of Fashion sets out fashion's links with key figures in architecture and design, including Louis Sue, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Eileen Gray, and Jean-Michel Frank. Drawing on photographs, advertisements, paintings and illustrations, this interdisciplinary study examines how fashionable interiors have shaped our understanding of architecture, dress, and elegance.

tudes is a fresh and a comprehensive look at a hot fashion-and-art at collective, documenting its evolution into an arbiter of contemporary cool. Based in Paris and Brooklyn, Etudes is one of most innovative brands in fashion and street wear today. With a look dominated by bold graphics and a sleek, relaxed silhouette intended for both men and women, the brand's unique, transatlantic style has drawn a young, sophisticated following. With a goal of becoming a total lifestyle label, the brand's approach is demanding, coherent, consistent and resolutely contemporary. This book presents the wide array of fashion, art, and style that tudes has facilitated since its founding. Filled with over 200 photographs and illustrations documenting work and collaborations with highly applauded artists and brands including Kara Walker, Ari Marcopoulus, RETROSUPERFUTURE, Devonte Hynes, Matthew Chambers, Mark Gonzales as well as a selection of interviews and essays commissioned specially for this book, tudes is an engaging volume that highlights an ethic of collaboration that is one of the most fashion-forward of any contemporary fashion and street wear labels.

Gerhard Munthe: Norwegian Pioneer of Modernism
Gerhard Munthe (1849-1929) is one of the most unique and important artists within the art nouveau movement and a significant contributor to its international diversity. His radical, abstract style based partly on old Norwegian folk art is today considered a precursor of twentieth-century modernism. Among Munthe's greatest achievements are his countless room decorations, of which the Holmenkollen Turisthotell (1896-1898) in Oslo and Hakonshallen (1910-1915) in Bergen are the most significant. A series of illustrations of old Norwegian ballads and fairy tales made in 1892-1893 became the basis for a renewal of the decorative arts in Scandinavia, notably in the weaving industry. Munthe's work as a designer covers most fields within the decorative arts: tapestries, carpets, furniture, stained glass, silver, porcelain, wallpaper, wrought iron, book bindings, fonts and ex libris.

How to Read Fashion: a crash course in understanding styles
Fashion is all around us, and few of us are unaffected by it. Yet how many people know the origins of the little black dress, or the bowler hat, or the ladies trouser suit? How many people can pin down the famous brand of leather jacket Marlon Brando wore in The Wild One, or why the Chanel bag is known as the 2:55 bag? How to Read Fashion identifies the main fashion trends of the past 200 years and shows how they relate to contemporary styles. From Neo-Classical to Gothic, Empire to Punk, Military, and Designer Branding, the defining characteristics of each `look' are explained. Chapters on techniques and materials give additional technical grounding. The book then shows how all of these are applied in the world of men's and women's fashions, including formal, casual and leisure wear, as well as accessories, jewellery, hair styles and make-up. Both dip-in reference and stylish resource, How to Read Fashion will equip you with the visual vocabulary to understand, investigate and interpret styles.
