Real Time Microcomputer Control of Industrial Processes
The introduction of the microprocessor in computer and system engineering has motivated the development of many new concepts and has simplified the design of many modern industrial systems. During the first decade of their life. microprocessors have shown a tremendous evolution in all possible directions (technology. power. functionality. I/O handling. etc). Of course putting the microprocessors and their environmental devices into properly operating systems is a complex and difficult task requiring high skills for melding and integrating hardware. and systemic components. software This book was motivated by the editors' feeling that a cohesive reference is needed providing a good coverage of modern industrial applications of microprocessor-based real time control, together with latest advanced methodological issues. Unavoidably a single volume cannot be exhaustive. but the present book contains a sufficient number of important real-time applications. The book is divided in two sections. Section I deals with general hardware. software and systemic topics. and involves six chapters. Chapter 1. by Gupta and Toong. presents an overview of the development of microprocessors during their first twelve years of existence. Chapter 2. by Dasgupta. deals with a number of system software concepts for real time microprocessor-based systems (task scheduling. memory management. input-output aspects. programming language reqUirements.

Bell The series is divergent; therefore we may be able to do something with it O. Heaviside Mathematics is a tool for thought. A highly necessary tool in a world where both feedback and nonlineari- ties abound. Similarly, all kinds of parts of mathematics serve as tools for other parts and for other sci- ences. Applying a simple rewriting rule to the quote on the right above one finds such statements as: 'One ser- vice topology has rendered mathematical physics ...'; 'One service logic has rendered computer science ...'; 'One service category theory has rendered mathematics ...'. All arguably true. And all statements obtainable this way form part of the raison d'ctre of this series.

Using Toolpack Software Tools: Proceedings of the Ispra-Course held at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra, Italy, 17-21 November 1986
I am very pleased to write these few brief paragraphs introducing this book, and would like to take this opportunity to attempt to set the Toolpack project in an appropriate historical context. The Toolpack project must be considered to have actually began in the Fall of 1978, when Prof. Webb C. Miller, at a meeting at Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, California, suggested that there be a large-scale project, called Toolpack, aimed at pulling together a comprehensive collection of mathematical software development tools. It was suggested that the project follow the pattern of other Pack projects, such as Eispack, Linpack, and Funpack which had assembled and systematized comprehensive collections of mathematical software in such areas as eigenvalue computation, linear equation solution and special function approximation. From the that the Toolpack project would differ significantly from beginning it was recognized these earlier Pack projects in that it was attempting to assemble and systematize software in an area which was not well established and understood. Thus it was not clear how to organize and integrate the tools we were to collect into Toolpack. As a consequence Toolpack became simultaneously a research project and a development project. The research was aimed at determining effective strategies for large-scale integration of large-scale software tools, and the development project was aimed at implementing these strategies and using them to put high quality tools at the disposal of working mathematical software writers.

Ingredients for Successful System Level Design Methodology
ESL or Electronic System Level is a buzz word these days, in the electronic design automation (EDA) industry, in design houses, and in the academia. Even though numerous trade magazine articles have been written, quite a few books have been published that have attempted to de?ne ESL, it is still not clear what exactly it entails. However, what seems clear to every one is that the Register Transfer Level (RTL) languages are not adequate any more to be the design entry point for today's and tomorrow's complex electronic system design. There are multiple reasons for such thoughts. First, the c- tinued progression of the miniaturization of the silicon technology has led to the ability of putting almost a billion transistors on a single chip. Second, applications are becoming more and more complex, and integrated with c- munication, control, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, and hence the need for ever faster, ever more reliable, and more robust electronic systems is pu- ing designers towards a productivity demand that is not sustainable without a fundamental change in the design methodologies. Also, the hardware and software functionalities are getting interchangeable and ability to model and design both in the same manner is gaining importance. Given this context, we assume that any methodology that allows us to model an entire electronic system from a system perspective, rather than just hardware with discrete-event or cycle based semantics is an ESL method- ogy of some kind.

Preservation of the Integrity of Electronic Records
By Terry Eastwood This book reports the findings of a research project on the means of protecting the integrity of active and semi-active electronic records. The project, which is commonly referred to as the UBC Project, was conceived by two of the authors of this book, Luciana Duranti and Terry Eastwood, and conducted between 1994 and 1997. The third author, Heather MacNeil, who worked formally as the principal research assistant on the project, acted as an equal in the research and in the writing of this book. The project investigated a number of fundamental questions that have arisen over the past decade as a consequence of the rapid development and use of computer technology for the creation, maintenance, and preservation of recorded information. One of the first comprehensive studies of the issues associated with the management of electronic records was conducted by the United Nations. The study, commonly known as the ACCIS report, aimed to develop guidelines for implementation of electronic archives and records management programmes for use by United Nations organizations, taking into account traditional archives and records management practices. The report of the study of electronic records in eighteen United Nations organizations identified a number of enduring issues. It recognized that the United Nations had to distinguish between record and non-record material. l It recognized the problem of ensuring the authenticity of records, which, rather narrowly, it construed as assuring legality.

1. BASIC CONCEPTS OF INTERACTIVE THEOREM PROVING Interactive Theorem Proving ultimately aims at the construction of powerful reasoning tools that let us (computer scientists) prove things we cannot prove without the tools, and the tools cannot prove without us. Interaction typi cally is needed, for example, to direct and control the reasoning, to speculate or generalize strategic lemmas, and sometimes simply because the conjec ture to be proved does not hold. In software verification, for example, correct versions of specifications and programs typically are obtained only after a number of failed proof attempts and subsequent error corrections. Different interactive theorem provers may actually look quite different: They may support different logics (first-or higher-order, logics of programs, type theory etc.), may be generic or special-purpose tools, or may be tar geted to different applications. Nevertheless, they share common concepts and paradigms (e.g. architectural design, tactics, tactical reasoning etc.). The aim of this chapter is to describe the common concepts, design principles, and basic requirements of interactive theorem provers, and to explore the band width of variations. Having a 'person in the loop', strongly influences the design of the proof tool: proofs must remain comprehensible, - proof rules must be high-level and human-oriented, - persistent proof presentation and visualization becomes very important.

Programming for Software Sharing
Most computer users are familiar with the problems of sharing software with others, and the transfer of programs from one computing environment to another. Software represents an ever-increasing proportion of the cost of computing and these costs tend to nullify all the economic advantages flowing from the wider availability of cheap hardware. Years ago it was hoped that the widespread use of high-level programming languages would help in alleviating the problems of software production, by increasing productivity and by making it simpler for users with similar problems to be able to use the same programs, possibly on different types of machines. It is a common experience that in practice this simple optimism has proved to be unfounded. It was these considerations which led us in 1979 to organize a two-week course on Programming for Software Sharing at the European Community Joint Research Centre, Ispra Establishment (Italy), forming part of the regular series of Ispra Courses . With prominent invited lecturers, local contributions and through discussion sessions we examined with an audience from many countries the problems involved in the sharing and transfer of software, as well as suggesting ways of overcoming them. In our local environment we are faced daily with three problems both from engagements in software exchange in the scientific-technical field on a Europe-wide or world-wide basis, and from work with programming techniques and contributions to the international standardization process.

Worst-Case Execution Time Aware Compilation Techniques for Real-Time Systems
For real-time systems, the worst-case execution time (WCET) is the key objective to be considered. Traditionally, code for real-time systems is generated without taking this objective into account and the WCET is computed only after code generation. Worst-Case Execution Time Aware Compilation Techniques for Real-Time Systems presents the first comprehensive approach integrating WCET considerations into the code generation process. Based on the proposed reconciliation between a compiler and a timing analyzer, a wide range of novel optimization techniques is provided. Among others, the techniques cover source code and assembly level optimizations, exploit machine learning techniques and address the design of modern systems that have to meet multiple objectives. Using these optimizations, the WCET of real-time applications can be reduced by about 30% to 45% on the average. This opens opportunities for decreasing clock speeds, costs and energy consumption of embedded processors. The proposed techniques can be used for all types real-time systems, including automotive and avionics IT systems.

The NIAM Information Analysis Method: Theory and Practice
About information analysis Everywhere people are working, they are communicating or exchanging informa tion about their work. Unless they come to reasonable agreements about this communication, i.e., agreements describing the language of their communica tion so that they can understand each other's information, sooner or later there will be such a Tower of Babel that their goal of communication will be doomed to failure. There are a lot of places wh~re some of the communication between people working together is being carried out via an information system. In these cases too, a clear agreement about communication must be made, so that people communi cating via an information system can understand each other at all times. In such an agreement, it is determined which data may be exchanged with the information system and the meaning everyone should assign to that data. For communication taking place via an information system, such an agreement is called a grammar or a conceptual schemea of this information system. Information analysis is that field and also that phase of development of an information system in which the grammar or the conceptual schemea of the information system is determined. The grammar or the conceptual scheme is an essential part of the specifications of present-day information systems.

Design Thinking Research: Looking Further: Design Thinking Beyond Solution-Fixation
Extensive research conducted by the Hasso Plattner Design Thinking Research Program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, USA, and the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany, has yielded valuable insights on why and how design thinking works. Researchers have identified metrics, developed models, and conducted studies, which are featured in this book, and in the previous volumes of this series. Offering readers a closer look at design thinking, and its innovation processes and methods, this volume covers topics ranging from understanding success factors of design thinking to exploring the potential that lies in the use of digital technologies. Furthermore, readers learn how special-purpose design thinking can be used to solve thorny problems in complex fields, such as the health sector or software development. Thinking and devising innovations are inherently human activities - so is design thinking. Accordingly, design thinking is not merely the result of special courses or of being gifted or trained: it is a way of dealing with our environment and improving techniques, technologies and life. As such, the research outcomes compiled in this book should increase knowledge and provide inspiration to all seeking to drive innovation - be they experienced design thinkers or newcomers.

This book presents the outcomes of the 16th International Conference on Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence Research, Management and Applications (SERA 2018), which was held in Kunming, China on June 13-15, 2018. The aim of the conference was to bring together researchers and scientists, businessmen and entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, computer users, and students to discuss the various fields of computer science, to share their experiences, and to exchange new ideas and information in a meaningful way. The book includes findings on all aspects (theory, applications and tools) of computer and information science, and discusses related practical challenges and the solutions adopted to solve them. The conference organizers selected the best papers from those accepted for presentation. The papers were chosen based on review scores submitted by members of the program committee and underwent a further rigorous round of review. From this second round, 13 of the conference's most promising papers were then published in this Springer (SCI) book and not the conference proceedings. We eagerly await the important contributions that we know these authors will make to the field of computer and information science.

The Essence of Software Engineering
This open access book includes contributions by leading researchers and industry thought leaders on various topics related to the essence of software engineering and their application in industrial projects. It offers a broad overview of research findings dealing with current practical software engineering issues and also pointers to potential future developments. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of adesso AG, adesso gathered some of the pioneers of software engineering including Manfred Broy, Ivar Jacobson and Carlo Ghezzi at a special symposium, where they presented their thoughts about latest software engineering research and which are part of this book. This way it offers readers a concise overview of the essence of software engineering, providing valuable insights into the latest methodological research findings and adesso's experience applying these results in real-world projects.

Design and Implementation of Optimization Software
This proceedings contains tutorials presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Design and Implementation of Optimiz- ation Software (Urbino, Italy, 20 June - 2 July, 1977) organized by the Committee on Algorithms (COAL) of the Mathematical Program- ming Society. The authors are to be congratulated on their clear expositions plus their prompt cooperation. We were especially fortunate to have had two of the first pioneers in designing mathematical programming systems: W. Orchard-Hays and E. M. L. Beale. Surveying the contents the reader will find that the papers fall into three categories which we can roughly designate by: linear programming, extensions of linear programming, and non- linear programming. In the first category on linear programming, the three back- ground papers by W. Orchard-Hays capture a historical perspective through the scope of modern systems, while T. J. Dekker's paper provides background in numerical methods used in optimization software. One area neglected by most previous mathematical pro- gramming symposia is the information structure employed to mani- pulate large volumes of data. The tutorial on matricial packing by H. J. Greenberg includes modern structures, including recent suggestions by J. Kalan and D. Rarick; another tutorial on pivot selection describes the vast range of tactics that have evolved, aimed at reducing computational effort with the strategy of the simplex method.

Open Multithreaded Transactions: A Transaction Model for Concurrent Object-Oriented Programming
Modem computer systems possess two main characteristics: their ever- growing complexity and the increasing number and range of abnormal situa- tions they have to cope with successfully in order to deliver the service. Developing such systems is ademanding task requiring discipline and cIear thinking, which are best ensured by the right design mechanisms aiming at both appropriate system structuring and a disciplined provision of fault toler- ance. The groundlaying research of the 60s and 70s created a solid basis in this area by developing a number of fundamental mechanisms, such as ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability) transactions, atomic actions (Brain Randell's conversations) and exception handling. Later on, a number of advanced techniques were proposed to overcome some of the limitations and rigidity of these mechanisms and to allow system developers to effec- tively deal with specific characteristics of a particular application, an applica- tion domain, design paradigm and execution environment. These incIude a variety of advanced transactional schemes and a number of novel exception handling techniques. In the last years, there has been a surge of interest in developing more advanced mechanisms combining properties of several fundamental mecha- nisms to make it easier for system developers to cope, in a more flexible and efficient fashion, with complexity, distribution and heterogeneity of emerging applications as weil as with an increasing variety of possible faults.
