The Innovator's DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators
A new classic, cited by leaders and media around the globe as a highly recommended read for anyone interested in innovation. In The Innovator's DNA, authors Jeffrey Dyer, Hal Gregersen, and bestselling author Clayton Christensen (The Innovator's Dilemma, The Innovator's Solution, How Will You Measure Your Life?) build on what we know about disruptive innovation to show how individuals can develop the skills necessary to move progressively from idea to impact. By identifying behaviors of the world's best innovators--from leaders at Amazon and Apple to those at Google, Skype, and Virgin Group--the authors outline five discovery skills that distinguish innovative entrepreneurs and executives from ordinary managers: Associating, Questioning, Observing, Networking, and Experimenting. Once you master these competencies (the authors provide a self-assessment for rating your own innovator's DNA), the authors explain how to generate ideas, collaborate to implement them, and build innovation skills throughout the organization to result in a competitive edge. This innovation advantage will translate into a premium in your company's stock price--an innovation premium--which is possible only by building the code for innovation right into your organization's people, processes, and guiding philosophies. Practical and provocative, The Innovator's DNA is an essential resource for individuals and teams who want to strengthen their innovative prowess.

Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant
The global phenomenon, embraced by business worldwide and now published in more than 40 languages. This international bestseller challenges everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success. Since the dawn of the industrial age, companies have engaged in head-to-head competition in search of sustained, profitable growth. They have fought for competitive advantage, battled over market share, and struggled for differentiation. Yet, as this influential and immensely popular book shows, these hallmarks of competitive strategy are not the way to create profitable growth in the future. In the international bestseller Blue Ocean Strategy, W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne argue that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves (spanning more than 100 years across 30 industries), the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors, but from creating blue oceans --untapped new market spaces ripe for growth. Such strategic moves, which the authors call value innovation, create powerful leaps in value that often render rivals obsolete for more than a decade. Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any company can use to create and capture their own blue oceans. A landmark work that upends traditional thinking about strategy, this bestselling business book charts a bold new path to winning the future. Published by Harvard Business Review Press.

Michael O'Leary: Turbulent Times for the Man Who Made Ryanair
Financial Times Business Book of the Month September 2017. Ryanair cancels over 700,000 bookings and its powerful PR juggernaut comes shuddering to a halt. For once, the airline's aggressive and flamboyant CEO, Michael O'Leary, is contrite and apologetic. A month later Ryanair announces increased passenger traffic for October, year-on-year growth and increased profits. Its share price soars. For the moment, it appears, a fundamental shake-up of Europe's biggest airline is off the table. But questions remain about the causes of the debacle and O'Leary's role in it. Michael O'Leary lifts the veil on the wildly successful and wildly controversial Ryanair CEO. Based on extensive research - including with close associates of O'Leary - the book examines O'Leary's personality, beliefs and obsessions and describes how these have moulded the business he runs. Written by a multi-award-winning journalist and broadcaster, with a thirty-year career covering business and current affairs, it is a fascinating insight into the business behind the man, and the man behind the business. 'Fascinating book ... very comprehensive' Eamon Dunphy, The Stand 'An indispensable guide for anyone who wants to understand not just where Michael O'Leary and Ryanair are coming from, but where they are going' Sunday Business Post 'A frequently enlightening unauthorised biography ... entertaining' Irish Independent 'In a world of colourless corporate leaders, Ryanair's aggressive, mouthy chief executive provides catnip for journalists. Harnessing the Power of Failure: Using Storytelling and Systems Engineering to Enhance Organizational Learning
Failure informs more generously and reliably than success. Failure is the best indicator of what's working and what's not in any complex system or enterprise. All failures will inevitably reveal latent defects and/or failure modes that are invariably buried within the people, processes, materials, design, manufacturing, and management that comprise the complex system. In this new framework from former NASA aerospace professionals, Newman and Wander employ a unique system failure case study (SFCS) paradigm, originally developed to stimulate systems thinking and lessons learning at NASA, that combines storytelling and systems engineering designed to enhance organizational learning. The authors employ the SFCS approach to explore a vast array of failure events in multiple sectors of transportation, industry, aerospace, construction, and critical infrastructure. They provide an Integrated Analysis seeking trends, patterns, and universally applicable insights that readers can use to recognize areas of potential vulnerability within their own activities. The authors then identify specific actions within the span of control of enterprise leaders, project managers, process owners and operators which can be implemented to manage risk in high consequence, high risk activities.

Mapping a Winning Strategy: Developing and Executing a Successful Strategy in Turbulent Markets
In an increasingly connected world experiencing accelerating levels of technological disruption, the strategic challenges for business leaders are greater than ever before, and conventional approaches to strategy are unable to contend with today's VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) business environment. A new approach to strategic decision-making is required to motivate and mobilize stakeholders to achieve the business's overarching goals, such as making a profit and delivering on people- and planet-related objectives. Mapping a Winning Strategy introduces a new mapping method for creating and executing an effective business strategy. This method uses visual maps to engage colleagues throughout the organization, ensuring that every stakeholder's voice is considered by avoiding a top-down approach. It also enables business leaders to identify the strategic issues they face without distraction, so that a clear path is formed towards the best strategic plan. By mapping out the most effective strategy, organizations can anticipate and manage roadblocks to strategic change and make winning and well-executed operational choices.

The Evolution of Business: Interpretative Theory, History and Firm Growth
Firm growth. This concept has interested researchers for generations. Economists have sought to predict and measure firm growth using a host of different variables, while strategic management scholars depict growth as the result of clever analyses and rational resource exploitation. Entrepreneurship scholars - ever engrossed by successful start-ups - have pondered why growth sometimes comes fast and sometimes never at all, while the field of business history has given countless examples of growing firms in a range of different settings. Yet despite research across fields, our knowledge of how growth in a firm actually comes about is limited and we still know little about the process. This book offers a new reading of economist Edith Penrose's The Theory of the Growth of the Firm. The bold statement is that although Penrose's work - across fields and generations - is amongst the most quoted on firm growth, the basic points of her work have yet to be realized and explored empirically. Essentially, growth is created by a dynamic interrelation between the firm's self-conception and its image of context. Based on these two subjective categories, the firm makes decisions and its actions lead it to develop along a particular path. To Penrose this is the basic engine that drives the growth and development of firms. This book discusses how the engine of firm growth can be captured in empirical analysis using interpretative theory and narrative methods inspired by recent streams of research in business history.

Ken Kocienda pioneered the iPhone keyboard, and this book gives a play-by-play of their creative process -from generating ideas to doing a demo for Steve Jobs.' Adam Grant Hundreds of millions of people use Apple products every day; several thousand work on Apple's campus in Cupertino, California; but only a handful sit at the drawing board. Ken Kocienda offers an inside look at Apple's creative process. For fifteen years, he was on the ground floor of the company as a specialist, directly responsible for experimenting with novel user interface concepts and writing powerful, easy-to-use software for products including the iPhone, the iPad and the Safari web browser. An insider's tale of creativity and innovation at Apple, Creative Selection shows readers how a small group of people developed an evolutionary design model, and how they used this methodology to make groundbreaking and intuitive software which countless millions use every day.

Living Innovation: From Value Creation to the Greater Good
The concept of innovation is always changing. Innovation systems are no longer rigid structures, but agile and self-healing systems. And the goal of innovation is no longer limited to value-creation for organizations, but often aims for much nobler goals: namely, creating a smart future where people are happy, where organizations thrive, and where the environment flourishes. The emerging innovation paradigm for building a smart future is the practice of lived innovation. Here innovation and knowledge management experts Sang M. Lee and Seongbae Lim offer a roadmap to these new territories and their futures. Drawing upon real-world examples from across the globe, they explain the fundamentals of innovation; they introduce emerging innovation tools such as convergence management, co-creation, and design thinking; and they outline a new innovation strategy, co-innovation, by which many partners and stakeholders collaborate to achieve shared goals. Along the way, they also examine several daunting, negative impacts of innovation in the digital age---job losses, wealth inequality, and sustainability and environmental issues---in order to demonstrate why innovation must focus on the greater social good. Living Innovation is essential reading for business executives, public administrators, innovation researchers, and anyone eager to confront major twenty-first-century challenges in new ways.

Technology Offsets in International Defence Procurement
Technology offsets, a nonconventional international trade-financing tool, is used by governments (buyers) to obtain industrial and technological benefits from companies (sellers) as part of international procurement. Offsets deals involve billions of dollars and this practice exists in around 80 countries around the world. Though offsets is a popular practice in defence, it is increasingly gaining popularity in civil sectors. Offsets is often tainted by controversy and receives bad press. What then makes offsets popular? Governments claim that offsets delivers technology and knowledge transfer, skills in high technology sectors and employment, and offsets expands export opportunities through participation in OEM supply chains. For companies, offsets is mainly employed as a tool to obtain a competitive edge and win sales in international business. In the past, there have been mixed results of case studies on the impact of offsets successes and failures. Considering the mismanagement of globalisation, unfair trade agreements and current political and economic discontent, there is a stronger need for governments and companies to use vehicles such as offsets to create a relationship of trust and commitment for sustainable development. This book fills the gap in offsets and focuses on how to manage offsets more effectively by addressing issues of strategy, policy and implementation, technology management, governance and risk. Technology Offsets in International Defence Procurement is designed for those studying international procurement, international trade, international business, technology management, defence policy and industrial policy. This book will also be of interest to practitioners and policy makers in both government and industry.

Organizational Justice in Mergers and Acquisitions: Antecedents and Outcomes
This book provides a unique account of how perceived justice is influenced by various aspects of an organizational merger and investigates the impact on behavior for those involved in the process. Drawing from both psychological and sociological insights, the author considers justice from an individual and group perspective in light of the political and strategic implications of mergers and acquisitions. Experiences from two empirical cases are used to consider the depth of theoretical analysis provided, in terms of practical outcomes for both organizations and employees alike. In this pioneering new book, the author explores communication, employee attitudes, trust and commitment, and the psychological contract between the employee and the organization, emphasizing the importance of developing a new meaning of organizational culture. Although primarily aimed at an academic audience, this book will also be useful to practitioners as it illuminates the potential pitfalls of overlooking the importance of fair treatment in the workplace.
