Coaching for Performance: The Principles and Practice of Coaching and Leadership FULLY REVISED 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
The seminal book featuring the transformational GROW modelCoaching for Performance is the institution of the coaching profession. This landmark text has now undergone the largest revision yet in its history to bring it fully up to date for today's professionals. With a focus on coaching as a way of being rather than a temporary process, this new edition explains how coaching can have a profound effect on the culture of an organisation. No longer an activity conducted in isolation by a select few managers, coaching impacts the growth of the whole company as well as the personal growth of the individual. This new edition includes a Foreword by John McFarlane, Chairman of Barclays and TheCityUK. New chapters on culture change demonstrate how to build a high performance culture in any type of organisation and measure the results. Extensive illustrative material has been added; the visuals are those used in coaching training programmes by Performance Consultants International, one of the pioneering global firms in coaching, leadership development and performance improvement. Terminology has been revised throughout to align with that used by the International Coach Federation and a new full glossary of terms serves to make this the definitive book on the topic. The influential GROW model (Goals, Reality, Options, Will) featured in the book is supported by new international studies and examples which are included throughout, ensuring that this edition will stay at the forefront of professional coaching and leadership development.

Mindful Business Leadership
Mindful Business Leadership presents a new model of leadership. It introduces ten very different leadership roles that are required to meet the challenges of modern business. Memorable metaphors and images are created for each, and they are placed in a matrix. Readers are shown how to develop these roles within themselves. Potentially negative aspects of each, are discussed, along with material on how to put these to creative use. The book argues that mindfulness is the best way to balance the roles - a mindful leader will know `who to be' in any situation. The last part is taken up with clear, practical exercises that readers can practice to become more fully mindful and develop a clear vision for their own leadership. Mindful Business Leadership is relevant to anyone, anywhere in the world, who is moving (or wishes to move) to a position of leadership.

Strategy, HRM, and Performance: A Contextual Approach
The book expounds the macro-level relationship between strategy, HRM, and performance, addressing important challenges that have constrained research and practice to date. Adopting a critical perspective, the first challenge is a narrow definition of 'performance' that has been largely driven by a managerialist, profit motive, with little regard for the human element. This book proposes adopting a more balanced approach towards measuring performance, encompassing both organizational financial performance as well as employee well-being. The second challenge is that HRM has largely been considered a universalistic phenomenon, rather than needing to be understood in the context in which an organization is operating. The book puts forward the argument for a more context-centric perspective, culminating in the development of the Contextual Strategic Human Resource Management Framework. The book emphasizes the importance of strategy, alignment, context, the role of actors, and a holistic conceptualisation of performance. Embedded in all chapters is a focus on achieving an appropriate balance between options, rather than providing a universalistic solution to all human resource management challenges.

The Most Important Asset: Valuing your People
The principles of sound human resource management are generally understood, but too often practitioners believe the same policies and programs will work in all contexts. The effectiveness of any system is highly dependent on the context within which it must function. And due to globalization and increased workforce diversity, the contexts across and even within organizations have become more varied. The Most Important Asset is a story about new graduates entering the human resources field, encountering and dealing with workforce management challenges and issues and developing their own professional competence through experience. Principles are presented and alternative solutions to problems are explored, providing the reader with a roadmap for analysing situations and making decisions as to how to act. Placing the characters in different types of organizations provides insights into how different contexts call for different strategies. Alternative strategies for staffing an organization, developing its people, defining, measuring and rewarding performance are used to illustrate how what is done should be compatible with the mission, culture, organizational strategy and internal and external realities.

Managing Expatriates in China: A Language and Identity Perspective: 2018
Providing fresh perspectives on managing expatriates in the changing host country of China, this book investigates expatriate management from a language and identity angle. The authors' multilingual and multicultural backgrounds allow them to offer a solid view on the best practices towards managing diverse groups of expatriates, including Western, Indian, and ethnic Chinese employees. With carefully considered analysis which incorporates micro and macro perspectives, together with indigenous Chinese and Western viewpoints, this book explores topics that include the importance of the host country language, expatriate adjustment, ethnic identity confirmation, acceptance and identity. The book presents a longitudinal yet contemporary snapshot of the language, culture, and identity realities that multinational corporation subsidiary employees are facing in China in the present decade (2006-2016). It will thus be an invaluable resource for International Management scholars, those involved in HRM and other practitioners, as well as business school lecturers and students with a strong interest in China.

Graduate Work: Skills, Credentials, Careers, and Labour Markets
The expansion of Higher Education has been one of the most important changes to affect Western labour markets. More than a third of all British workers are now degree holders. The graduate labour market is often understood as that part of the labour market characterized by high skills and high knowledge intensity and that is perceived to be needed and used in an increasingly complex economy. Higher education is presumed to be the developer of these advanced skills. Yet with the graduatisation of the workforce, comes growing concerns about, as well as misunderstanding, of what jobs graduates occupy, how they utilise their skills, and what the role of education is within graduate work and the competition for jobs. The book examines some of the assumptions placed on graduate work, graduate jobs, graduate skills, and graduate careers. It provides valuable insights how we can understand the meaning of graduate work within a rapidly changing economic, technological, and organizational context. Based on in-depth qualitative case studies of software developers, financial analysts, laboratory scientists, and press officers, the book shows that the graduate labour market is more heterogeneous than often is understood. What counts as graduate work remains contested and under constant reinterpretation and re-negotiation. Access to work, job performance, and career advancement are not necessarily driven by university qualifications and skills associated with Higher Education. The book begins to explore how and to what extent, those workers with university degrees are defined by their educational experiences, status, and qualifications.

The Platform of Agile Management: And the Program to Implement it
Game-changers - the likes of Google, Facebook, Amazon, Tesla, and the Robo-advisors - are revolutionizing swaths of business sectors. They were born with a different mindset, which makes them agile and ambidextrous. They seriously challenge traditional organizations, which have lost their initial impetus. To adapt to the new business environment, increasingly CEOs are launching programs of management innovation. Yet, executive surveys show that up to 70% of them result in partial or total failures. Such outcome cannot be improved as long as these programs are conceived and carried out with a traditional approach. To innovate management innovation, The Platform of Agile Management integrates 3 principles that help innovate the way people think, 3 paradigms that help innovate the way people behave, and 3 practices that help innovate the way people act. So, while many change-management programs focus on the program, Willy Sussland starts by innovating the management. Thereafter, he proposes a program that is agile because it is steered and supported by the leadership, but that is powered by the people. Moreover, the proposed program of management innovation is not a one-time project, but the framework to keep innovating the management as needed to outperform.

Human Resource Management (HRM) is fundamentally shaped by institutional and cultural factors, such as the different political environments and social philosophies of particular countries and regions. By examining the various organisational aspects of business life and systems of people management in Asia, the study of HRM across the continent can, therefore, give us a greater understanding of Asian societies, as well as the contemporary world of work more generally. This handbook provides an up-to-date and intellectually engaging overview of HRM in the Asian context. Distinctive in its comprehensive coverage of traditional as well as emerging topics of HRM, it analyses important themes, such as the regulatory framework for work and employment, religiosity, family business and gender. Using a comparative approach, it also effectively highlights the unique features of each country's attitudes towards HRM. Covering a range of themes and case studies, sections include: * Institutional and cultural contexts, * Labour regulation and industrial relations, * Thematic and functional HRM, * HRM in selected Asian countries, such as China, Japan, Vietnam, India and Singapore. Written in a highly accessible style, this book will be useful to students and scholars of Human Resource Management, Asian Business and Economics and Sociology.

Addressing the area of shared leadership, also known as collective or distributed leadership, this edited book embraces the underlying idea that leadership is a dynamic process that intersects closely with followership. While some authors present rigorously researched qualitative and quantitative case studies that investigate the dynamics of followership in distributive leadership in terms of collective decision-making, leadership identity, roles and demographic composition of groups in a variety of settings, other authors take a critical look at distributed leadership models by viewing them through the lens of nature and ecosystems as well as human development processes. The chapters aim to inspire readers to challenge the current definition of leadership and explore more inclusive and holistic paradigms. Distributed Leadership provides a comprehensive and constructive contribution to the field of leadership and will be an essential read for academics and scholar-practitioners interested in business management.

Continuous Improvement by Improving Continuously (CIBIC): Addressing the Human Factors During the Pursuit of Process Excellence
Although many businesses, organizations, and institutions today have erected continuous improvement systems that address wants, needs, and challenges at the process and systems level, very few have effectively extended this pursuit into the human factors realm. As a result, even businesses, organizations, and institutions with the most finely crafted continuous improvement systems face the specter of failure from inadequate human factors continuous improvement. The Continuously Improve by Improving Continuously (CIBIC) System is designed to address these inadequacies in a manner that directly eliminates the gaps, deficiencies, and chaotic factors that often causes widespread havoc in our personal, academic, and professional endeavours. The CIBIC System specifically uses a variety of frameworks, methods, models, and tools to promote the structured inner development that is the precursor of the visible pursuit of excellence in our outer performance endeavors. Those individuals who enthusiastically embrace the CIBIC System will almost certainly experience a dramatic improvement in their professional performance levels, while those organizations that embrace the system will undoubtedly benefit from the new synergies and cohesion that CIBIC will undoubtedly create. This book explains how the frustrating reoccurrence of operating failures are the result of flawed or fragmented business philosophies and principles. This book addresses this systemic problem by highlighting an incredibly comprehensive system that promotes continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence. By highlighting key inner drivers, essential outer qualities, and supporting models and frameworks, the book makes the pursuit of excellence an easily sustainable logical endeavor.

Managing in Developing Countries
This book considers management theories and approaches specifically in the context of developing countries. In recent years, international business scholarship has increased its focus on the developing world, which represents eighty percent of the global population and has doubled its share of value-added trade in the past two decades. This text will help readers to manage successfully in this region by learning to assess, apply, and adapt established practices in developing countries. Punnett begins by identifying the characteristics of the developing world-Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, India, Latin America, and the Middle East-and the companies therein to help students understand how the reality of these countries influences business and management. By tracking a fictional product through the internationalization process, students will navigate the challenges of operating an international company from a developing country base, using a traditional model of management focused on planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. They will also gain insight into ethical considerations likely to arise, such as differential treatment based on personal characteristics and age dispersion. Cases, discussion questions, personal stories, and end-of-chapter exercises will help readers to grapple with issues and test their learning. Complete with chapter objectives and Lessons Learned boxes to facilitate understanding, Managing in Developing Countries is an excellent supplement for international business or international management students with a special interest in the developing world.

The first part of Managing Conflict covers the causes and costs of conflict, the impact of the psychological contract and the legal framework for managing workplace disputes both in the UK and internationally. The second part of the book provides a blueprint for redefining resolution and building a culture of constructive conflict management, from designing a conflict management strategy and developing a formal resolution process to embedding mediation, engaging stakeholders and training managers in resolution skills. It also includes conflict resolution toolkits for managers, HR teams, employees and unions to help tackle conflict and bullying at work. Packed with best practice case studies from major UK and global organizations, this is an indispensable guide for all HR professionals looking to resolve conflict in the workplace.

Citizenship in Organizations: Practicing the Immeasurable
This book explores the concept of citizenship, and the role that organizations can or do play in its creation, stimulation and control. Offering multiple organizational perspectives (private and public organisations) and their relation to several types of output (citizenship, poverty, profit, employability), this work presents a rich collection of philosophical thoughts and practices on the subject of citizenship within and without the organizational context. Particular attention is given to this human aspect, an element of unpredictability, a gut feeling, the unknown... something immeasurable that plays a part in human relations and how they organize themselves. Citizenship in Organizations casts new light on the impact of organizations to the notion of citizenship.

Age Diversity in the Workplace: An Organizational Perspective
Organisations, as well as individuals and societies, continue to struggle with the complexity associated with unprecedented demographic changes. Workforce ageing and increasing age diversity are not transient phenomena, and their implications are compounded by the combination of several global trends like workers' increased mobility and migration, as well as increasing gender and ethnic differences. This demographic pressure compels organisations to question conventional ways of management thinking, doing and being in order to capitalize on the benefits of an age-diverse workforce. This volume bridges theoretical and empirical approaches in order to illuminate the challenges of valuing employees at any point in their professional lives, from youth to retirement. Embracing perspectives that span from the individual to the organisational levels of analysis, the book explores the two distinct but intertwined phenomena of workforce ageing and increasing workforce age diversity. The volume is divided into two parts. Contributions in the first section raise questions about the meanings of age and age diversity, as well as how and when age matters in organisations. The second part of the book examines the role and contribution of HR practices in forging an age-inclusive workplace.

Team Dynamics Over Time: Advances in Psychological Theory, Methods and Practice
This volume addresses the need to focus on temporal adaptations of teams. Modern organizations have been relying on teams more often to cope with the changing economic and technological climate. An increase in the use of teams has led to more team research throughout the fields of cognitive science, human factors, organizational psychology, assessment, and behavioral science. How teams grow and change is important for their performance and their members' satisfaction with their work; therefore, the attention that this book lends to teams' temporal factors is much deserved. Editors Eduardo Salas, Lauren B. Landon and William B. Vessey have gathered some of the best and brightest team researchers to contribute to this book. The various chapters offer readers background information, temporal measurement tools, and implications for research and practice. The book covers such interesting perspectives as team leadership, trust, cultural implications, and temporal implications in long-duration, extreme situations, including space exploration. This book serves as a resource to researchers who study teams, managers who lead teams, and those who work in teams.

The authors explore technological advances within the industry in connection with various features of family governance. This thought-provoking study is divided into two parts, the first part providing an overview of current literature on the topic, and the second part analysing the findings of empirical investigation in a specific industry setting. Practitioners and academics of business strategy will find this book extremely useful as it combines both solid theoretical reasoning and robust empirical analysis.
