Over 30 million records sold. The most photographed British star of the 80s---alongside Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher. Not since the Beatles has a British personality been so well known internationally, across a complete cross-section of ages, genders, races, and religions. Now, for the very first time, Samantha Fox has decided to tell the whole, and sometimes painful, story of the bullied North London girl who managed to captivate an entire world. My first memory is of an explosion and the smell of burnt flesh. With those words, following a prologue in which readers are introduced to her backstage in 2015, Samantha Fox begins her story. Thoughts of Myra the love of her life who has been battling an aggressive form of cancer for almost two years whirl through her mind, then shortly she takes to the stage once more, to sing Touch Me, the song which made her world famous almost 30 years earlier. Samantha Fox s autobiography is a captivating tale about a fighter who has gone through hell more than once, but who has always come out stronger; someone who has remained in the public s consciousness for almost four decades now and who continues to play to sold-out crowds across the world.

Everything's Bigger in Texas: The Life and Times of Kinky Friedman
Kinky Friedman is a true renaissance man. He picketed segregated businesses in college and served in the Peace Corps in Borneo. A singer/songwriter/satirist who called his country band the Texas Jewboys, he was the first full-blooded Jew to play the Grand Ole Opry, and put on the only show in Austin City Limits history deemed too offensive to air. He performed with Bob Dylan, traveled with Led Zeppelin on its private plane, and partied with John Belushi, Robin Williams, Don Imus, Lowell George, Levon Helm, Iggy Pop, Mike Bloomfield, and Dennis Hopper. When his cocaine habit almost killed him, he returned to Texas and wrote 30 books, including 18 detective novels, as well as memoirs with Willie Nelson and Billy Bob Thornton. Bill Clinton and George W. Bush invited him to the White House. Former Texas governor Ann Richards served on his advisory board when he cofounded Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, and Dwight Yoakam headlined a fund raiser. More than 547,000 Texans voted for him when he ran for governor in 2006. Friends Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet, and Lyle Lovett helped with fund raisers. Currently in his 70s, the Kinkster continues to write songs, record CDs, and perform for enthusiastic fans throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

Here is the story of an often overlooked, one-of-a-kind rock n roll musician and the historic times he lived in. In spite of numerous opportunities for success, he became a tragedy. Jerry Nolan came out of New York in the 1970s as part of two of the most influential and infamous bands of the time, the proto-punk New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers. Jerry had what it took to be a star, but his battles with heroin continually stymied his career and ultimately ended his life. Despite this, he is remembered as a cross between a Martin Scorsese film character and jazz legend Gene Krupa: a stylish, urban, wisecracking, trendsetting raconteur, who was also a powerhouse drummer. Stranded in the Jungle: Jerry Nolan s Wild Ride A Tale of Drugs, Fashion, the New York Dolls, and Punk Rock tells Jerry s story through extensive research and interviews with those closest to him: bandmates, friends, lovers, and family members, including new interviews with members of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, Talking Heads, and Blondie. It gives firsthand accounts of not only Jerry s life and struggles but the earliest history of punk rock in both New York and London, highlighting his notorious and incendiary musical partner, Johnny Thunders.

Mathilde Wesendonck, Isolde s Dream
The biography of Mathilde Wesendonck is the untold and fascinating story of this woman s inspiring influence on the major works of Richard Wagner, based on facts related in their correspondence and other authentic documents. Under the influence of her aura, Wagner composed Tristan and Isolde, Rhinegold, The Walkyrie, the first two acts of Siegfried, The Meistersinger, the outline for Parsifal, and the music for the Wesendonck Lieder on Mathilde s poems. The discovery of unedited letters by author Judith Cabaud sheds new light on Wagner s life and works. After the Revolution of 1848, Wagner, like many others, found refuge in Switzerland. In Zurich, Mathilde s husband, Otto, befriended and financially supported the composer in his musical endeavors. As neighbors, Mathilde sent her poems to Wagner and received them back accompanied by the music of the Wesendonck Lieder. When he sent the poem of Tristan, it had become a reality, their reality. The two lovers then had to choose between union or separation from their respective families. Torn apart, they began a passionate exchange of letters later censored by Wagner s second wife, Cosima Liszt. Many documents were falsified or destroyed. After Wagner, Mathilde aspired to continue to be the muse of a great musician. With Brahms, she wanted to write the libretto for an opera, which the master could not compose. Her poems and her plays remained consistent with her life, which was the story of love, fidelity, and sacrifice.

My Dear Departed Past
For Dave Frishberg internationally known jazz pianist, songwriter, and lyricist it all began when he was in elementary school during World War II. Mentored by his brother, Mort, seven years his senior, Dave discovered the music of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bing Crosby while listening to 78-rpm records from Mort s collection. For good measure, Mort also taught Dave how to play boogie-woogie and blues on the piano. This musical indoctrination perfectly sharpened Dave s musical tastes and lay the foundation for his lifelong love of music and the camaraderie of musicians. In My Dear Departed Past, the creator of well-known songs including Peel Me a Grape, I m Hip, My Attorney Bernie, Blizzard of Lies, Van Lingle Mungo, and I m Just a Bill (featured in ABC s Schoolhouse Rock) takes readers from his boyhood and university days in St. Paul, Minnesota, to his Air Force service in Salt Lake City, and then on to his life as a pianist and songwriter in New York City and Los Angeles. Populated with colourful characters including the brilliant musicians he s played with in the iconic clubs and studios of the jazz scene at its peak Dave brings his stories of being on the road and his experiences in the music business vividly to life.

Billy Vera: Harlem to Hollywood
Billy Vera: Harlem to Hollywood is the extraordinary story of singer/songwriter/actor/music historian Billy Vera, suburban child of a showbiz family who fell in love with black music at an early age. We follow his journey as he plays the Times Square mafia-owned clubs by night and works as a staff songwriter by day, penning tunes for the likes of Ricky Nelson, Fats Domino, and the Shirelles, before finally writing one for himself and gospel singer Judy Clay. His dream comes true as the duo plays to standing ovations at Harlem s Apollo Theatre. With the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. and the arrival of the Woodstock generation, the change in the culture renders blue-eyed soul singers like Vera irrelevant and a decade of 70s survival gigs ensues, until Dolly Parton s version of one of his songs hits number one. Relocating to Los Angeles, our hero forms a band, Billy Vera and the Beaters, and finds career renewal in the form of a hit record and a side career as an actor. At the ripe old age of 42, he finds himself with a number-one record, followed by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and eventually a Grammy award, all without ever falling into the musician s trap of drugs or alcohol (we told you this isn t your typical musician s tale). This is the story of a true musician who held on to his art through highs and lows: Along the way, we see a history of the music business of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s as told by one who lived it and sustained his work through it all.

To some, he is the face behind classic Pink Floyd. To others, he is the temperament behind some of the greatest albums of the rock era. And to others still, he is one of the most original songwriters of a generation that overflows with notable talent. To all, he is an enigma: a rock star who not only eschewed stardom but also spent much of his career railing against it. But to call Roger Waters a mass of contradictions is simply taking the easy way out. He is so much more. Roger Waters: The Man Behind the Wall is the first full biography of the author of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and, of course, The Wall. It traces his life from his childhood in war-torn England to the multitude of wars he has fought since then with his bandmates, with his audience, and most of all with himself. Packed with insight and exclusive interviews with friends and associates, and featuring rare photos and a detailed discography, Roger Waters: The Man Behind the Wall dismantles the wall, brick by brick, revealing the man who built it in all his glory.

Despite Steely Dan s popularity, its ability to cultivate an ever-growing base of avid and loyal fans, and its chart positions, relatively little has been written about the group. Steely Dan FAQ clears up some of the many misconceptions about the band and sheds new light on the genius behind the songwriting of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker, the perfection of their productions, and the myriad musicians who have played a role in creating the distinctive Steely Dan sound. Steely Dan FAQ takes us through five decades of cryptic lyrics, sophisticated music, elusive interviews, dramatic interludes, and misconstrued sentiments. The band has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has had the majority of its albums certified platinum or double platinum in the U.S., yet the story has not been fully told. Within these pages readers will gain insight into the influences, musicians, situations, and complications that created one of the most distinctive bands in the history of rock and roll.

Band FAQ, the: All That s Left to Know About the Fathers of Americana
In a way that no prior rock act had done, the Band assimilated, remade, and contagiously celebrated the rich, deep tributaries of American vernacular music. Blues, country, jazz, folk, gospel, soul, rock n roll the members soaked it all up, distilling what they heard and felt into an alchemical brew all their own. Via this vibrant concoction, the group Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson reshaped popular music, creating the genre now known as roots rock and giving us classic songs like The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. The Band wove a history that rivals the epic scenes they sang about: from their early years as rockabilly wild man Ronnie Hawkins group, the Hawks, and their groundbreaking tours and Basement Tapes period with Bob Dylan, through their emergence as the Band with 1968 s landmark album Music from Big Pink, they reigned as one of rock s most popular acts, culminating with rock s greatest concert movie, The Last Waltz, and their 1980s reunion and ultimate demise with the tragic deaths of Manuel and Danko. The Band FAQ digs deep to discuss different facets of the Band s collective and individual stories providing intensive analysis of their recordings; highlighting their key concerts, collaborations with Bob Dylan, outside projects, musical and non-musical influences, and their contemporary artists; and examining the group s formidable effect on popular music and their still-thriving legacy. A host of rare images rounds out the book, which is a must-have for new and longtime fans.

Perfect Union of Contrary Things
Here is the authorized biography of the one and only Maynard James Keenan. The book traces Keenan s journey from his Midwest childhood to his years in the Army to his time in art school, from his stint at a Boston pet shop to his place in the international spotlight and his influence on contemporary music and regional winemaking. A comprehensive portrayal of a versatile and dedicated artist, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things pays homage to the people and places that shaped the man and his art. Until now, Maynard s fans have had access to only an abridged version of his story. A Perfect Union of Contrary Things presents the outtakes, the scenes of disappointment and triumph, and the events that led him to take one step after the next, to change direction, to explore sometimes surprising opportunities. Included are sidebars in his own words, often humorous anecdotes that illuminate the narrative, as well as commentary by his family members, friends, instructors, and industry colleagues. The book also features a foreword by Alex Grey, an American visionary artist and longtime friend of Keenan, who has designed Tool s album and stage art. Accompanying the text are photos of Keenan from childhood to the present, as well as reproductions of his early drawings and writings. Maynard s story is a metaphor for the reader s own evolution and an encouragement to follow one s dreams, hold fast to individual integrity, and work ceaselessly to fulfil our creative potential.

Ringo: With a Little Help
Ringo: With a Little Help is the first in-depth biography of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, who kept the beat for an entire generation and who remains a rock icon over fifty years since the Beatles took the world by storm. With a Little Help traces the entire arc of Ringo s remarkable life and career, from his sickly childhood to his life as The World s Most Famous drummer to his triumphs, addictions, and emotional battles following the breakup of the Beatles as he comes to terms with his legacy. Born in 1940 as Richard Starkey in the Dingle, one of Liverpool's most gritty, rough-and-tumble neighbourhoods, he rose from a hardscrabble childhood marked by serious illnesses, long hospital stays, and little schooling to emerge, against all odds, as a locally renowned drummer. Taking the stage name Ringo Starr, his big break with the Beatles rocketed him to the pinnacle of worldwide acclaim in a remarkably short time. He was the last member of the Beatles to join the group but also the most vulnerable, and his post-Beatles career was marked by chart-topping successes, a jet-setting life of excess and alcohol abuse, and, ultimately, his rebirth as one of rock s revered elder statesman.

Led Zeppelin Day by Day
The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin's formation. From their first rehearsal in a small dingy space in Soho in 1968 until their last concert in 1980, the band conquered the world. Their gruelling concert work schedule captured young people's imagination around the globe. Unique inventiveness and originality guaranteed huge album sales and sold-out concerts. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were the charismatic front men, backed by the superhuman rhythm section of John Bonham and John Paul Jones. Together they produced some truly timeless music, which continues to endure today. Their huge popularity, however, inevitably came at a cost when drugs and alcohol abuse in the last few years of the band's existence started to stifle their creative force, and the untimely death of drummer John Bonham signalled the end of the band. This day-by-day book details all of the concerts the band performed with set lists (where known) and includes reviews of several significant shows throughout their career. Recording sessions for each album and session work undertaken by individual members are listed in chronological order. The book also corrects previously undetected mistakes as well as providing new information. Quotes from recording engineers and studio staff help paint a true picture of what it was like being in the studio with the band.

Covering three generations of Hank Williams, Family Tradition is both unique and vast in scope. Beginning in the present day with Hank III - who gave the author unprecedented access - and time - traveling across the years, this examines just what kind of rebel mojo inspired this crazed family of country music, from Hank Sr., often regarded as one of the most influential of American musicians; to Hank Jr. to this year's model, Hank III, who has somehow found a way to reconcile his legacy's deep-rooted twang and high-lonesome sound with particularly searing strains of punk and heavy metal, launching an all-out war with traditional Nashville in the process.

Bad Reputation: The Unauthorized Biography of Joan Jett
Bad Reputation is the unexpurgated story of Joan Jett, the single most exciting rocker of the American 1980s, one of the biggest-selling acts of the age, and one of punk rock's most valued elder statespeeps. Through its pages, a welter of exclusive interviews and observations paint what might well be the last great tale of rock hedonism, but one that comes with a twist in its tail. The rockers are women, the groupies are guys. It could have been the plot line for a movie or even a sitcom, but the Runaways, Jett's first band, made it happen, and Jett made it last. The first serious female rocker of the 1980s, Jett became the template for everyone that followed. But unlike so many of her peers and counterparts, she never lost her credibility, never sold out, and never gave up. And she has backed her reputation up with stardust, following the chart-topping I Love Rock 'n' Roll - one of the most played '80s anthems of all time - with Crimson and Clover , Do You Wanna Touch Me , and I Hate Myself for Loving You before the decade ended. And, while the 1990s saw Jett purposefully step away from the spotlight, she remained, and remains, America's number one Queen of Noise.

Few would dispute U2's position as the biggest rock band in the world. Active and relevant for nearly thirty-five years, Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr. have been masters of reinvention, thriving artistically while continuing to sell out concerts across the globe. From their start at Dublin's Mount Temple School in 1976 up to the 2009 Rose Bowl show that shattered a U.S. concert attendance record (previously set by the group in 1987), U2's members have experienced some amazing collective highs. But in its ascent, the band has seen its share of personal, artistic, and commercial setbacks. These are just some of the topics U2 FAQ explores: How did Bono recover his cherished suitcase of lyrics 23 years after its 1981 disappearance? What movie dialogue is sampled in the middle of Seconds? What effect did bull's blood have on Larry's drumming? How did Bono's visit to Central America inform The Joshua Tree? What are the details of Adam's 1989 marijuana bust? How did Mick Jagger wind up on All That You Can't Leave Behind ? Award-winning music journalist John D. Luerssen goes beyond the essential facts, delving into the legendary fables and unique anecdotes that make U2 FAQ an indispensable read for all U2 disciples.

Verdi: The Operas and Choral Works
Giuseppe Verdi's career forms one of the loveliest arcs in musical history. The passion of his works resonates universally, while the sophistication of his middle and late operas satisfies demanding ears and tastes. In Verdi: The Operas and Choral Works, Victor Lederer surveys every one of the master's 28 operas and his greatest choral pieces, showing Verdi's growth as a musical dramatist-he would revolutionise the hidebound conventions of 19th-century Italian opera-and his single-minded pursuit of dramatic truth. After describing the chaotic milieu in which Verdi learned his craft, the book provides act-by-act analyses of the early masterpieces Nabucco, Ernani, and Macbeth. The neglected operas from the composer's self-described years in the galleys are covered together. Lederer then takes readers through the magnificent sequence of Verdi operas from Luisa Miller onward, including the fine but underrated Stiffelio. Each of the late operas - Don Carlo, Aida, and Othello and Falstaff, the twin Shakespearean masterworks that crown Verdi's oeuvre - is discussed at length in its own chapter. Lederer also examines Verdi's monumental Requiem along with the choral Quattro pezzi sacri, Verdi's sublime final achievement. The book comes with a Naxos CD of musical selections representing highlights from throughout Verdi's long, remarkable career.

Exit Music: The Radiohead Story
(Book). Radiohead doesn't play by the rules of rock stardom. When conventional wisdom urges a turn to the right, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, and Phil Selway unfailingly turn left. Despite or perhaps because of this, Radiohead has become one of the world's most famous bands, and more important, unique in its style, themes, and ability to connect to a loyal fan base. But Radiohead's journey to fame over more than a decade has been fraught with tension. As the quintet continues to search for sounds that haven't been heard before, each new album and tour is a potential crisis point, threatening to split the band apart. Through it all, these consummate outsiders have revealed little about themselves. But Exit Music: The Radiohead Story uncovers the details behind the songs. In this new, updated, and revised edition, author Mac Randall follows the band from its beginnings in suburban Oxford, UK, through the success of Creep and OK Computer to the traumatic recording sessions that spawned Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief, on to the award-winning In Rainbows and beyond. This new edition also includes coverage of the band's most current release and eighth studio album, The King of Limbs .

Jimi Hendrix FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Voodoo Child
Once you're dead, you're made for life, Jimi Hendrix said a few weeks before death, foretelling his posthumous fame. Upon the discovery of his wine-soaked body in an empty London flat, the press made an example his excessive lifestyle and yet underestimated the other body of Jimi Hendrix: a body of work as vital to our understanding of the 20th century as that of Louis Armstrong, the Beatles, and Miles Davis. Hundreds of hours of unreleased studio sessions and concert performances would be his salvation. A modest man but highly competitive musician, Hendrix set the stage for many of the most significant musical movements to emerge between 1970 and 1999, including heavy metal, fusion, glam rock, and rap. Voodoo bluesman ...sonic producer ...the lyricist that out - Dylaned Dylan: these are what snatch our attention 40 years after his death, as does his aw, shucks smile in photos and the raw sexuality of concert performances. It's hard to find the man under all the falsehoods told by friends, family, business associates, and even Jimi himself. Jimi Hendrix FAQ attempts to present the facts in a fast-moving, fan-friendly read.

If Howard Kaylan had sung only one song, the Turtles' 1967 No. 1 smash hit Happy Together , his place in rock-and-roll history would still be secure. But that recording, named in 1999 by BMI as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with over five million radio plays, is only the tip of a rather eye-opening iceberg. For nearly five decades, Howard Kaylan has been a player in the rock-and-roll revolution - in addition to his years with the Turtles, Kaylan was a core member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention at their peak - a wild and dangerous ride that he is only too happy to report on, naming names and shedding shocking tales of sex, drugs, and creative excess, before he finds himself a part of glam rock history with Marc Bolan and T. Rex, and giving street cred and harmonies to everyone from John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, and Alice Cooper to the Ramones, and Duran Duran, to name just a few. Among rock memoirs, Shell Shocked will stand alone as not only one of the best told, but one with a truly candid and unmatchable story of rock-and-roll insanity and success from a man who glories in it all.

Way Down: Playing Bass with Elvis, Dylan, the Doors & More - the Autobiography of Jerry Scheff
In this candid and perceptive memoir of his 45-year career, bassist Jerry Scheff takes us onto Elvis' private jet, on tour with Bob Dylan, and into the studio with the Doors. A stalwart presence behind some of the greatest names of popular music, Scheff has also played with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, the Association, Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, and Nancy Sinatra, to name just a few. Eschewing hype, Scheff provides a behind-the-scenes perspective, from having worked sleeves rolled up, side by side, with the great artists in their factories. The book opens with the TCB band's learning of the King's death while en route to a tour date, a pivotal moment for him, the rest of the band, and the world at large. He then proceeds on a nonlinear journey that mirrors the process of true life-reflection, from his roots in San Francisco to his touring all over the world. This is a tale of man who has truly grown a career from a genuine love of music and of his instrument, proving how following that gift can bring a person to places beyond his wildest dreams. It is an exciting inside view of the evolution and craft and work of making rock and roll-a must-have for true music craftsmen and music junkies in general.
