The Art of Hand Lettering: Calligraphy Techniques and Exercises
Calligraphy is an ancient art that even today finds a wide range of applications in a variety of fields and it has become increasingly popular as a hobby. This manual, prepared by an expert in the field, Laura Toffaletti, introduces beginners to the practice of calligraphy, revealing its secrets and explaining the main techniques in a simple and intuitive manner, also thanks to the clear and attractive illustrations. Templates, calligraphic tables and delightful examples of use accompany those who are learning this skill for the first time. The expert teaching method leaves room to develop a personal style and to express individual creativity. The first section of the manual introduces the world of calligraphy today, and is followed by a presentation of the basic tools for beginners who want to start practicing. The main templates of the alphabets (upper and lower case) with the relative practical exercises form the main part of the manual and teach how to form the letters correctly. In the second part, the practical examples presented give precious advice on using calligraphy, for greetings cards, place cards, invitations and many other interesting ideas there: at the end of the book there are 48 pages of exercises to practice.

Rapunzel's Revenge: Graphic Novel
Escaping from the enchanted tree where Mother Gothel imprisoned her, Rapunzel sets off alone through the ghost towns and Badlands of Gothel's Reach. She is determined to find Gothel's Villa and teach Mother Gothel a long-overdue lesson for her years of treachery and lies, and help her real mother get out of the mine camps where Mother Gothel has kept her enslaved. Rapunzel's adventures take her across a country much akin to the Wild Wild West, where she is soon wanted - dead or alive - for horse thieving, kidnapping, jail breaking and using her hair in a manner other than nature intended! In this highly original take on the familiar story of Rapunzel, Shannon and Dean Hale introduce us to a feisty and dynamic heroine and Nathan Hale's illustrations offer a striking visual feast, ensuring this is a truly unforgettable reading experience.

Phillimore's Edinburgh
In his day, Reginald P. Phillimore (1855-1941) was one of Britain's leading postcard artists. A great friend of the Athens of the North, he settled in North Berwick and delighted in depicting various Edinburgh locations, both famous and obscure. Artistically, these cards are some of the finest he produced. He sold his cards through a network of dealers, all over Britain, and since he employed a local schoolgirl to hand colour his drawings, no two coloured cards are the same. Although some of Phillimore's Edinburgh postcards are easy to come by, others are exceedingly rare and sought after today. This book brings together, for the first time ever, all of Phillimore's Edinburgh postcards, to present a fascinating and unique picture of the highways and byways of the great city, from a series of vintage views by a master artist. Phillimore's Edinburgh makes use of all of his ninety-five Edinburgh postcards, with explanatory text and a few supplementary illustrations. It will appeal both to those who know and love Edinburgh and to postcard collectors.

Keith Sonnier: Until Today
One of the first artists to use light, specifically neon, as a form of sculpture, Keith Sonnier changed our ideas of what sculpture is and could be. From his early pieces such as Rat Tail Exercise and the Ba-O-Ba series to his most recent luminous neon-based series, this book explores the progression and influence of Sonnier's oeuvre. Essays in the book look at Sonnier's numerous public art projects, including a kilometer-long installation at the Munich airport, his relationship with his native Louisiana culture, and the architectural influences in his work. One of the art world's most productive figures, Sonnier continues to redefine the parameters of sculpture. This beautiful monograph celebrates an artist who has never ceased experimenting-and never stopped astonishing his audience.

City Linkage: Art and Culture Fostering Urban Futures
A debate on the various disciplinary contributions required to create a sustainable city of the future. How do we want to live together? How can citizens directly participate in city politics? How can we shape cities so that they are liveable? These questions are more relevant than ever given current processes of transformation; our cities are rapidly changing as a result of both climate change and globalisation. Which role do artist-run spaces and self-organised cultural projects play in the search for solutions to the city of the future? In City Linkage artists, researchers, activists, and theorists introduce successful international examples of urban development, showing the degree to which contributions from the arts and cultural sectors can support the manifestation of a sustainable city. Text in English and German.

Ancient Corinth: Site Guide (Modern Greek)
This is the first official guidebook to the site of ancient Corinth published by the ASCSA in over 50 years, and it comes fully updated with the most current information, color photos, maps, and plans. It is an indispensable resource for the casual tourist or professional archaeologist new to the site. The guide begins with a history of Corinth and its excavations and then presents two tours. The first takes visitors through the archaeological site from the Temple of Apollo to the Forum, the Fountain of Peirene, and more. The second tour covers the ancient monuments outside the fenced area of the site, including the Odeion, the Theater, and the Asklepieion, and then the various remains of ancient Corinth located within and outside the ancient Greek walls, including the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore and the Lechaion Basilica. Short bibliographic notes for many entries lead the reader to fuller descriptions of monuments, objects, and concepts; a glossary is also provided. Interspersed in the text are topographical notes and focus boxes on special topics such as geology, Pausanias, St. Paul, and prehistoric Corinth and the Corinthia.

Modern Asian Design
Modern Asian Design provides a comprehensive introduction to the development of Asian design in the modern period, both tracing historical threads and offering a theoretical framework within which to chart the history of design in Asia. Rather than a singular Asian history , this book presents a series of studies centred on trade routes, colonial relationships, regional networks and cross-cultural exchanges. Modern Asian Design builds on existing resources beyond design history in an effort to map the field, focusing particularly on relations between Asia and the West and also across Asian design cultures. Opening with a brief overview of trade and exchange networks in the 17th and 18th centuries, the bulk of this study comprises analysis of the development of modern design in Asia during the later 19th and early 20th centuries, a period of rapid modernisation. The book's final two chapters bring these central ideas into a contemporary and highly relevant context.

It explores the process of drawing and painting and includes the techniques of encaustic, egg tempera, fresco, oil, watercolour and acrylic. The aim of the book is to show that artistic processes are not, in themselves, difficult. Each technique is given its own chapter and students are encouraged to work through the technique from scratch, encountering the work through preparation of the wood panel or canvas, the mixing of pigments and the application of the paint. Illustrated throughout with historical and contemporary examples of works and with photographs of studio practice, each chapter is accompanied by exercises that encourage the student to explore the creative possibilities of each method.

Cutting Matta-Clark: The Anarchitecture Project
Of the many shows at the fabled 112 Greene Street gallery--an artistic epicenter of New York's downtown scene in the 1970s--the Anarchitecture group show of March 1974 has been the subject of the most enduring discussion, despite a complete lack of documentation about it. Anarchitecture has become a foundational myth, but one that remains to be properly understood. Stemming from a series of meetings organized by Gordon Matta-Clark and refl ecting his long-standing interest in architecture, the Anarchitecture exhibition was conceived as an anonymous group statement in photographs about the intersection of art and building. But did it actually happen? It exists only through oblique archival traces and the memories of the participants. Cutting Matta-Clark investigates the Anarchitecture group as a kind of collective research seminar, through extensive interviews with the protagonists and a dossier of all the available evidence. The dossier includes a collection of Matta-Clark's aphoristic art cards, the 96 photographs that were produced by the various participants for possible inclusion in the exhibition, and images from a recently unearthed video of Matta-Clark's now famous bus trip to see Splitting in Englewood, New Jersey.

Art and Physics: Parallel Visions In Space, Time, And Light
Art interprets the visible world. Physics charts its unseen workings. The two realms seem completely opposed. But consider that both strive to reveal truths for which there are no words--with physicists using the language of mathematics and artists using visual images. In Art & Physics, Leonard Shlain tracks their breakthroughs side by side throughout history to reveal an astonishing correlation of visions. From the classical Greek sculptors to Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, and from Aristotle to Einstein, artists have foreshadowed the discoveries of scientists, such as when Monet and Cezanne intuited the coming upheaval in physics that Einstein would initiate. In this lively and colorful narrative, Leonard Shlain explores how artistic breakthroughs could have prefigured the visionary insights of physicists on so many occasions throughout history. Provicative and original, Art & Physics is a seamless integration of the romance of art and the drama of science--and an exhilarating history of ideas.

After the End of Art: Contemporary Art and the Pale of History
Over a decade ago, Arthur Danto announced that art ended in the sixties. Ever since this declaration, he has been at the forefront of a radical critique of the nature of art in our time. After the End of Art presents Danto's first full-scale reformulation of his original insight, showing how, with the eclipse of abstract expressionism, art has deviated irrevocably from the narrative course that Vasari helped define for it in the Renaissance. Moreover, he leads the way to a new type of criticism that can help us understand art in a posthistorical age where, for example, an artist can produce a work in the style of Rembrandt to create a visual pun, and where traditional theories cannot explain the difference between Andy Warhol's Brillo Box and the product found in the grocery store. Here we are engaged in a series of insightful and entertaining conversations on the most relevant aesthetic and philosophical issues of art, conducted by an especially acute observer of the art scene today. Originally delivered as the prestigious Mellon Lectures on the Fine Arts , these writings cover art history, pop art, 'people's art,' the future role of museums, and the critical contributions of Clement Greenberg - who helped make sense of modernism for viewers over two generations ago through an aesthetics-based criticism. Tracing art history from a mimetic tradition (the idea that art was a progressively more adequate representation of reality) through the modern era of manifestos (when art was defined by the artist's philosophy), Danto shows that it wasn't until the invention of Pop art that the historical understanding of the means and ends of art was nullified.Even modernist art, which tried to break with the past by questioning the ways of producing art, hinged on a narrative. Traditional notions of aesthetics can no longer apply to contemporary art, argues Danto. Instead he focuses on a philosophy of art criticism that can deal with perhaps the most perplexing feature of contemporary art: that everything is possible.

Three Color Painting
This title shows reader's how to improve their art and paint, using only three colours. It includes 20 step-by-step demonstrations that show how a painting is built up, using photographic reference. These techniques are accessible and useful to all, from beginners to experienced painters. In this user-friendly and truly liberating book Stan shows how numerous shades can be achieved and stunning paintings created using just three paint colours - alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and yellow ochre - plus white. Stan takes the reader through 20 demonstration paintings and explains not just how to paint, but the thought process involved in doing so. The demonstrations are divided into two sections: those using watered-down gouache, to create watercolour-style paintings and those using thick gouache, in the style of oil paintings. Using his techniques, he says, even a complete beginner will get a great result at the first attempt and the experienced artist will improve his painting.
