Encyclopedia of the Black Arts Movement
The Black Arts Movement (BAM) encompassed a group of artists, musicians, novelists, and playwrights whose work combined innovative approaches to literature, film, music, visual arts, and theatre. With a heightened consciousness of black agency and autonomy-along with the radical politics of the civil rights movement, the Black Muslims, and the Black Panthers-these figures represented a collective effort to defy the status quo of American life and culture. Between the late 1950s and the end of the 1970s, the movement produced some of America's most original and controversial artists and intellectuals. In Encyclopedia of the Blacks Arts Movement, Verner D. Mitchell and Cynthia Davis have collected essays on the key figures of the movement, including Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Larry Neal, Sun Ra, Sonia Sanchez, Ntozake Shange, and Archie Shepp. Additional entries focus on Black Theatre magazine, the Negro Ensemble Company, lesser known individuals-including Kathleen Collins, Tom Dent, Bill Gunn, June Jordan, and Barbara Ann Teer-and groups, such as AfriCOBRA and the New York Umbra Poetry Workshop. The Black Arts Movement represented the most prolific expression of African American literature since the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Featuring essays by contemporary scholars and rare photographs of BAM artists, Encyclopedia of the Blacks Arts Movement is an essential reference for students and scholars of twentieth-century American literature and African American cultural studies.

Gouthiere's Candelabras
This third volume in the Frick Diptych series offers fresh insight into a pair of candelabra that represent the pinnacle of luxury and taste in the years prior to the French Revolution. Vignon tells the fascinating story of these objects that are made of two small white vases with extraordinary gilt-bronze mounts by Pierre Gouthiere, the celebrated eighteenth-century French chaser and gilder. Vignon's essay is paired with a text by De Waal in which he examines what it is to make, own, and desire such complex objects

Emma Stibbon: Fire and Ice
Emma Stibbon's drawings and prints depict volcanoes, tectonic plates and powerful glaciers. Includes commentary by the artist on the making and location of each image. The artist is fascinated by environments in flux. Her work often explores the impact of natural forces: the shifting tectonic plates, volcanic activity and powerful glaciers that shape and transform the Earth's surface. Stibbon has accompanied research expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, lived and worked among volcanoes in Hawai'i, and has made several visits to Stromboli, off the coast of northern Sicily, Iceland and Norway. This book presents the sketches she made during her travels. They have the immediacy that results from an artist working at speed and often in difficult circumstances. Readers will discover the unexpected visual effect of ink that has frozen on contact with the paper. The book is introduced by the artist who, informed by her discussions with vulcanologists and glaciologists, explains why she is drawn to depict nature's extremes.

Franz Hals Portraits: A Family Reunion
Frans Hals (1582/83 - 1666) is one of the foremost portrait painters of the Dutch Golden Age. This exhibition is the first devoted to his family group portraiture. The show and the catalogue will unite all of his four family portraits along with related w orks by the artist and will examine the topic of Hals's family portraiture as a whole, placing it in the context of his complete oeuvre. The exhibition was prompted by the Toledo Museum of Art's acquisition in 2011 of Frans Hals's Van Campen Family Portra it in a Landscape, as well as the recent conservation of Brussels' Three Children of the Van Campen Family. These two works originally formed one composition, separated for unknown reasons likely in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The catalogu e reunites the surviving sections of the Toledo/Brussels painting and proposes a reconstruction. It will discuss how the four compositions are constructed, what symbolic elements are included, and what we know about the sitters. It also presents new discov eries about the Van Campen family, placing them in Haarlem society of the early 1600s.

Summer Exhibition Illustrated 2019
The Royal Academy's legendary Summer Exhibition has been an annual event since 1769, making it the longest-running art exhibition of its kind. The exhibition, which includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, architectural design, photography and models, is the largest open-submission show in the UK. First published in the 1870s, the Summer Exhibition Illustrated presents the highlights of each year's selection. The Royal Academicians on the Hanging Committee in 2019 include Stephen Chambers, Anne Desmet, Bob and Roberta Smith and Richard Wilson. Together they will decide which artists - professional and amateur alike - will have the chance to display and to sell their work in the galleries of Burlington House, to be seen by thousands of visitors. The painter Jock McFadyen RA will co-ordinate the Summer Exhibition this year. His essay explains his ideas for the show and provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into this idiosyncratic fixture of the London calendar. The Summer Exhibition will run from the 10 June to 13 August 2019.

Fashion Installation: Body, Space, and Performance
Gone are the days when fashion relied on a runway launch with coinciding press promotions to show a couturier's new range. Today, design houses are thinking beyond traditional methods of display to stimulate interest in their collections, such as to the internet, fashion film and, more recently, fashion installations. This book offers a critical evaluation of the changing ways in which fashion has been exhibited, focusing specifically on the recent turn toward installation, whether in the form of static presentations, interactive performances or the more conventional curated designer exhibition. Connecting viewers - and consumers - on an immersive level, the fashion world has begun to appropriate installation methods traditionally associated with displays of experimental art, transcending the runway system and its constraints. This book turns to the designers who have pioneered fashion installations, such as Aitor Throup, Muccia Prada, Walter Van Beirendonck and Hussein Chalayan among others, and also looks back to the early influential fashion displays by designers such as Worth and Poiret to provide historical context. Divided into three parts, and covering a variety of installations from Vivienne Westwood's fashioned `concept' stores to Gareth Pugh's immersive films, this ground-breaking book positions the designer as the curator and exhibition-maker and offers the first focused study of the pertinent concept of fashion installation.

Born in the remote northern community of Fort St. John, British Columbia to an Indigenous mother and a Swiss-Canadian father, Brian Jungen's dual heritage often provides the themes and subject matter for his work. Over the past twenty years, he has created an extensive and imaginative body of sculpture using repurposed material. This book looks at over 80 sculptures, drawings, and film stills, from whale skeletons composed of white plastic chairs and gas cans decorated with floral bead-work designs to totem pole-like forms constructed out of golf bags and Northwest Coast masks made out of repurposed sneakers. The book also includes a selection of archival materials including photographs, images of the artist working, unrealized works, and research pictures. Essays, an interview with the artist, and a timeline round out this generously illustrated book that details Jungen's deep material explorations which highlight a long history of inequality, a concern for the environment, and a profound commitment to Indigenous ways of knowing and making.

Sorolla: The Painted Gardens
Like Claude Monet s celebrated plein air landscapes at Giverny, the series collected in this book represents among the best-loved examples of Joaquin Sorolla s (1863-1923) work, and a window into the Spanish painter s quest to capture the essence of a garden. Described by Monet as the master of light, Sorolla and his landscapes, formal portraits, and historically themed canvases drew comparisons to contemporary American painter John Singer Sargent. Sorolla had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic for grand scenes of Spanish life when he began a personal series of garden works, presented completely for the first time in this publication. Painted at the palaces of La Granja and the Alcazar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, and at the painter s home in Madrid, these Impressionist works allowed Sorolla to apply his signature loose brushwork and training as a photographer s lighting assistant to gardens and the sculptures, architecture, and sitters that frame and animate them. Sorolla depicted reflections in fountains and pools, the sunlight dappling his glamorous sitters, sprays of orange blossoms, and shaded blue-and-white tile as he endeavoured to render the radiant peace of a summer afternoon.

A new bible of sticker art a visual history of street art in one of its most elemental, accessible, provocative, and ubiquitous forms with twelve pages of collectible stickers This follow-up volume features more than 3,000 stickers from the vibrant and constantly evolving world of street art, where DIY culture meets music, graffiti, design, and branding. Cheap, democratic, easy to tag, and not always fast to fade, the sticker has been an ever-present medium from the New York and London punk scenes to skate culture and political expression. Organized by theme, chapters move from Music and Skateboarding to Streetwear, Graffiti, Fine Art, and Political Activism, and include sections on sticker art and the origins of surf and BMX culture. The diverse range of works features stickers by fine artists such as KAWS and Jenny Holzer; street artists such as BANKSY, Neckface, ESPO, and Barry McGee; and a host of amateurs who tag the streets anonymously. With texts from celebrated writers including INVADER, Paul Gorman, Stikman, and C. R. Stecyk, among many others More Stuck-Up Crap reveals not only the cutting edge of sticker art but also the personal relationships that street artists and pedestrians share with the medium. And with 12 pages of removable stickers, this book will be as collectible and coveted as the originals spotted on the streets.

Rembrandt. The Complete Drawings and Etchings
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) stands as one of the most important painters in Western art, but nowhere else do we encounter his inimitable talent more so than in his drawings and etchings. Hinged upon experimentation and expressive line work, they garnered him unparalleled recognition from his contemporaries. Each portrait or quotidian scene is elevated by his masterful treatment of light, shadow, and hatching. There is another world to be accessed within Rembrandt's etchings-one that dwells within the intangibilities of moody midnight contemplation and the twilit countryside, these elusive moments fixed to the page with every stroke. Meanwhile, Rembrandt's drawings display his emotional state with a candor unseen in other works. Using pen and brush, silverpoint and charcoal as well as colored chalks and ink, he drew on various types of paper which he also sometimes dyed beforehand. Commemorating the 350th anniversary of the artist's death, this stunning XXL monograph is the first-ever collection gathering Rembrandt's complete works on paper. Through the 708 drawings, brilliantly printed in color for the first time, and 314 etchings in pristine reproductions, we discover Rembrandt's keen eye, deft hand, and boundless depth of feeling like never before; and above all, we witness that he was far more than just a painter.

Illuminated Paris: Essays on Art and Lighting in the Belle poque
The City of Light. For many, these four words instantly conjure late nineteenth-century Paris and the garish colors of Toulouse-Lautrec's iconic posters. More recently, the Eiffel Tower's nightly show of sparkling electric lights has come to exemplify our fantasies of Parisian nightlife. Though we reflect longingly on such scenes, in Illuminated Paris, Hollis Clayson shows that there's more to these clich s than meets the eye. In this richly illustrated book, she traces the dramatic evolution of lighting in Paris and how artists responded to the shifting visual and cultural scenes that resulted from these technologies. While older gas lighting produced a haze of orange, new electric lighting was hardly an improvement: the glare of experimental arc lights--themselves dangerous--left figures looking pale and ghoulish. As Clayson shows, artists' representations of these new colors and shapes reveal turn-of-the-century concerns about modernization as electric lighting came to represent the harsh glare of rapidly accelerating social change. At the same time, in part thanks to American artists visiting the city, these works of art also produced our enduring romantic view of Parisian glamour and its Belle poque.

How to interpret a work of art? Can we learn anything from literature, film or opera? What is sentimentality? What is irony? How to think philosophically about architecture, dance, or sculpture? What makes something a great portrait? Is music representational or abstract? Why do we feel terrified when we watch a horror movie even though we know it to be fictional? In Conversations on Art and Aesthetics, Hans Maes discusses these and other key questions in aesthetics with ten world-leading philosophers of art: Noel Carroll, Gregory Currie, Arthur Danto, Cynthia Freeland, Paul Guyer, Carolyn Korsmeyer, Jerrold Levinson, Jenefer Robinson, Roger Scruton, and Kendall Walton. The exchanges are direct, open, and sharp, and give a clear account of these thinkers' core ideas and intellectual development. They also offer new insights into, and a deeper understanding of, contemporary issues in the philosophy of art.

William Morris and John Ruskin: A New Road on Which the World Should Travel
A wide-ranging collection of essays written for the William Morris Society exploring the various intersections between the life, work and achievements of William Morris (1834-1896) and that of John Ruskin (1819-1900). Subjects covered include Ruskin's connection with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, the promotion of craft skills and meaningful work, Morris and the division of labour, Ruskin's engagement with education and the environment, Ruskin and the art and architecture of Red House, the parallels between Ruskin's support for Laxey Mill and Morris's Merton Abbey Works, the illustrated manuscript and the contrasts between Ruskin's Tory paternalism and Morris's revolutionary socialism. The book includes articles first published in The Journal of William Morris Studies between 1977 and 2012 and new pieces written especially for this volume. Ruskin's beliefs had a profound and lasting impact on Morris who wrote, upon first reading Ruskin whilst at Oxford University, that his views offered a new road on which the world should travel - a road that led Morris to social and political change.

Abstract Expressionism
In 1946 the art critic Robert Coates, writing in the New Yorker, first used the term 'Abstract Expressionism'. The two words combine the emotional intensity of the German Expressionists with the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European Abstract schools. Although they were being painted by then little-known artists working in low-rent studio space, works of Abstract Expressionist art now dominate the walls of major museums. This important publication re-evaluates the movement, recognising its complex and fluid reality, and branching further into multimedia. As such, this book encompasses sculptors such as David Smith and photographers such as Aaron Siskind as well as some of the most famous painters of the twentieth century, including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still.
