Being Here Is Everything - The Life of Paula Modersohn-Becker
The short, obscure, and prolific life of the German expressionist painter Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907), a significant figure in modernism.First published in France in 2016, Being Here Is So Much traces the short, obscure, and prolific life of the German expressionist painter Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907). In a brief career, cut short by her death from an embolism at the age of thirty-one, shortly after she gave birth to a child, Modersohn-Becker trained in Germany, traveled often to Paris, developed close friendships with the sculptor Clara Westhoff and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and became one of her generation's preeminent artists, helping introduce modernity to the twentieth century alongside such other painters as Picasso and Matisse. Marie Darrieussecq's triumphant and illuminating biography at once revives Modersohn-Becker's reputation as a significant figure in modernism and sheds light on the extreme difficulty women have faced in attaining recognition and establishing artistic careers.

Henry Fuseli: Drama and Theatre
Shadows and light, high drama and the supernatural, these elements are hallmarks of Henry Fuseli's paintings. Accom- panying a long-overdue show of Fuseli's works inspired by literary sources, this book addresses his appreciation of Greek tragedy, Shakespearian drama, and Milton's monumental verse epos Paradise Lost. While most of the criticism around Fuseli focuses on his nightmarish visions indicative of the emerging era of Dark Romanticism, this book examines the dramatic elements both in subject matter and style of his paintings, which include themes of triumph and despair rendered in sharp contrast and explosive expression. Illustrated with brilliant reproductions, the essays in this book explore Fuseli's world of literary sources as well as his new approach to the stage arts, and how the enthusiasm for Shakespeare in the 18th century played a part in the conception and marketing of Fuseli's work, thus creating a more comprehensive understanding of his background, time, and world view.

Vasarely
Hungarian-French painter Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) was a precocious talent. His earliest surviving painting, a landscape done at age 12, baffled through its realism-an indication of the compelling illusions of spatial depth that would later define his dazzling universe. Inspired by the likes of Malevich and the Bauhaus school, Vasarely developed his own abstract-geometric visual language, exploring the relationship between pure form and pure color. Vasarely's experimentation with optical effects in the 1940s and '50s earned him a central role in the evolution of Op Art. By the late '50s and early '60s, he concentrated on the democratization of art by producing multiples -reasonably priced original works reproduced in large editions. Vasarely's attempt to destroy the completely obsolete myth of the unique, inimitable masterwork was a tremendous contribution to art theory. To him, there was no place for hierarchical division into originals and reproductions, nor for distinction between fine and commercial art- We cannot leave the enjoyment of art to an elite of connoisseurs forever, he declared. This redefinition of the artist's position and function in society marked a crucial first step in the Pop Art movement. Vasarely's boldly colorful and eye-popping paintings are instantly recognizable and remain entirely modern and relevant today. In this dependable introduction, we explore the makings of an artist ahead of his time. Crisp reproductions and insightful texts celebrate the father of the Op Art movement, from his earliest hypnotizing optical illusions to his hallmark checkerboard works.

George Shaw: A Corner of a Foreign Field
Nominated for the Turner Prize in 2011, George Shaw (b. 1966) is one of Britain's leading contemporary painters, best known for his painstakingly detailed, luminous, and often elegiac representations of the British suburban landscape. Beautifully designed and generously illustrated, this book is the first to explore the entirety of Shaw's artistic output, which spans three decades. Beginning with his work at the Royal College of Art in the 1990s and ending with his most recent paintings, this volume places Shaw's work within the context of contemporary culture, from the traditions of English landscape painting to the repercussions of Brexit. An introductory essay and comprehensive catalogue texts by Mark Hallett are accompanied by essays on the artist's work by Tom Crow, Catherine Lampert, David Mellor, and Eugenie Shinkle. An interview between Shaw and the celebrated contemporary artist Jeremy Deller offers insight into this work from the perspective of the artist himself, while a fully illustrated chronology details the entirety of his career.

Franco Angeli: The 60s
Franco Angeli was one of the leading figures in the Italian art of the post-war period. Often labelled superficially as Pop, he is revealed here, through new documents and studies, as an artist who took a surprising and unprecedented approach to his work. He made his debut in the fifties in a still little-known experimental Roman laboratory where the new generations encountered the masters of Italian art. This book reconstructs the stylistic and artistic reciprocities and the relations of Angeli with his friends and colleagues up until the sixties, a time when, with his attainment of an existential image that was at the same time deeply polemical and provocative, his work developed along versatile lines, in an original dialogue with the international context.

Hugh Lane: The Art Market and the Art Museum, 1893-1915
This book charts a geography of the art market and the art museum in the early 20th century through the legacy of one influential dealer. Born in Ireland, Hugh Lane (1875-1915) established himself in London in the 1890s. With little formal education or training, he orchestrated high-profile sales of paintings by the likes of Holbein, Titian, and Velazquez and described his life's work as selling pictures by old painters to buy pictures by living painters. Lane assembled a collection of modern art for the Johannesburg Art Gallery, amassed a collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings for Cape Town, and gave his own collection of modern art to the National Gallery in London. He also donated paintings to the National Gallery of Ireland, where he was named director in 1914. Each chapter in this revelatory study focuses on an important city in Lane's practice as a dealer to understand the interrelationship of event and place.

The Last Painting: Final Works of the Great Masters: from Giotto to Twombly
There are no rules, and even less justice. Death takes everyone without discrimination. Sometimes it is accidental - like Signorelli, who fell from scaffolding. Sometimes it is expected, as with the diabetic Cezanne, who wrote I am old, sick, and I swore to die while painting . But often, researching a painter's death is an easier task than determining which of their works is truly their 'last'. Paintings tend to be dated by year and not month, inciting much debate among art historians. This book embraces this ambiguity, studying 100 examples of works that lay completed for several years, or were left unfinished on the easel, or were finished post-mortem by a friend's grieving hand. The Last Painting collects 100 terminal paintings from 100 artists, including Dali, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Goya, Pollock, Rembrandt, Dix, Bonnard, Titien, and many more. Each picture gives us a glimpse into the painter's mind. Did they know death was coming? Did they paint with denial, or acceptance? Did they return to a favourite subject, or decide to embark on a new, original project while they still had time? A poetic and thought-provoking book, The Last Painting is a sensitive exploration of the relationship between art and death.

Claude Monet: Waterlilies and the Garden of Giverny
A gorgeous new edition with the cover printed on silver. Towards the end of his life and much inspired by Japanese water gardens, Monet spent a great deal of time in his beloved Giverny. Adorned with poppies, blue sage, dahlias and irises, the waters were disturbed only by bamboos and water lilies. His water garden was originally created to satisfy a need to be near water, and to provide a visual feast that could be enjoyed from his house. The pond was fed by the river Ru, and weeping willow and silver birch hung over its edges, caressing the fronds of the greenery and blossoms below. Its famous green wooden footbridge was built across the water and it became the central focus of many of his works. He said, `It took me some time to understand my water lilies. I planted them for pleasure.' and so he began to work on what is probably the most famous series of paintings the world has ever seen.

Colors of Asia: Painting by Francesco Lietti
Painting as a fluid act allows Francesco Lietti to relive certain experiences and adventures, many of which are related to travel and discovery. After digesting these experiences he brings them to life, almost subliminally, onto the canvas. The composition, the choice of colours, and the key elements of the painting begin to appear. Francesco relaxes into the process and refines what is already there, layer by layer, element by element, colour by colour, until the memory of the place, the adventure, is brought to life. In Colors of Asia, Francesco Lietti documents a collection of his works while providing behind-the-scenes insights into the making of his paintings: the inspiration, the technique, the experiences, and the passion. Pairing short memoirs with his inspired images, the reader gets to see the process of art with the finished piece. Francesco has also invited a few friends, fellow artists, and colleagues working in the art field to write pieces about his work so that he might have the chance to learn something about himself and his work through the eyes of others.

Giovanni Bellini: The Art of Contemplation
Following the arc of Bellini's career, from his early devotional paintings to his later, occasionally secular works, this book offers an in-depth appreciation of the Venetian master who dominated the Early Renaissance. Featuring nearly every extant Bellini work, as well as those of his contemporaries, this book brims with gorgeous Renaissance art. Author Johannes Grave focuses on some of the artist's greatest works including Allegoria Sacra, the Brera Pieta, and the altarpiece of San Giobbe-to explore how Bellini excelled in tempera before mastering oil painting. Grave discusses how Bellini's precise lines, his delicate facial expressions, and the subtle effects of light and shadow were used in his religious paintings as well as his portraiture and late mythological depictions. This book examines Bellini's life, including his complex relationships with his father Jacopo, his brother Gentile, and his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna. It considers the original contexts of Bellini's works, and elucidates the ways in which these paintings were meant to be perceived. The book also links Bellini's devotional paintings with the poetic creations of his pupil Giorgione. An important contribution to the scholarship of Renaissance art, this masterful book reaffirms Bellini's status as one of Venice's greatest painters.
