Knowledge and Discernment in the Early Modern Arts
In early modern Europe, discernment emerged as a key notion at the intersection of various domains in both learned and artisanal cultures. Often used synonymously with judgment, ingenuity, and taste, discernment defined the ability to perceive and understand the secrets of nature and art, and became explicitly connected with a kind of knowledge available only to experts in the respective fields. With contributions by historians of art and historians of science, and with geographic coverage focusing on the Low Countries and their multiple connections to different parts of the world, this volume reframes recent scholarship on what the editors term 'cultures of knowledge and discernment' in the early modern period. The collection is innovative in its focus on investigating types of knowledge linked to what was then called the 'science' (scientia) of art, to artistic expertise and connoisseurship, and to 'secrets of art and nature.'

Arabic Script in Motion: A Theory of Temporal Text-based Art
This book is a pioneering study of temporal typography and time-based calligraphic art written in the Arabic system of writing. Inspired by the innate qualities of Arabic script as well as certain practices in Islamic calligraphy and contemporary calligraphic art, the book devises five broad categories of temporal behaviors for Arabic characters in time-based media. It goes onto expand the vocabulary used to describe Arabic script's appearance in time-based media and proposes a theory to help artists, practitioners, and theoreticians push the boundaries of temporal text-based art. Furthermore, it tackles questions of legibility and readability, and seeks to understand how temporality of Arabic text influences the creation of meaning. This book will therefore appeal not only to animators, designers, and artists, but also to commentators and scholars who deal with temporal text-based art written in Arabic script.

Cambridge Library Collection - Art and Architecture: The Art of Decorative Design
Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) was arguably the first British industrial designer, and this 1862 work was his most influential book. He worked in a variety of media, from wallpaper and textile design to metalwork and ceramics, but was also a botanist, and his two professorial roles in fine and ornamental arts, at the South Kensington Museum and the Crystal Palace, included the teaching of botany. Unlike William Morris, Dresser believed that good design could and should be mass-produced by industrial methods, so that it became affordable to all classes. He describes here how decorative ornament should be used in design, the importance of taking inspiration from natural (usually plant) models, and issues of proportion, balance and gradation. The book, which encouraged the rising middle classes to decorate their homes themselves, is highly illustrated: the colour plates can be viewed online at www.cambridge.org/9781108080408, by clicking on the 'Resources' button.

Cambridge Library Collection - Art and Architecture: Reminiscences of Rosa Bonheur
Regarded as the foremost animal painter of her time and the most famous female artist of the nineteenth century, Rosa Bonheur (1822-99) is best known for her works Ploughing in the Nivernais and The Horse Fair. She showed an early talent for drawing people and animals, and quickly determined that art would be her career, visiting the abattoirs of Paris and performing dissections in order to better understand animal anatomy. Through her independent spirit, successful career and unconventional lifestyle she made men and other women aware of what could be achieved. Of the various sources of biographical detail about Bonheur, this 1910 publication is among the most authoritative. Incorporating translated letters between the artist and her friends and family members, it provides invaluable first-hand evidence of her approach to painting and her views on the art world more widely. The work is illustrated throughout with many fine engravings.

Gothic Imagination in Latin American Fiction and Film
This work traces how Gothic imagination from the literature and culture of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe and twentieth-century US and European film has impacted Latin American literature and film culture. Serrano argues that the Gothic has provided Latin American authors with a way to critique a number of issues, including colonization, authoritarianism, feudalism, and patriarchy. The book includes a literary history of the European Gothic to demonstrate how Latin American authors have incorporated its characteristics but also how they have broken away or inverted some elements, such as traditional plot lines, to suit their work and address a unique set of issues. The book examines both the modernistas of the nineteenth century and the avant-garde writers of the twentieth century, including Huidobro, Bombal, Rulfo, Roa Bastos, and Fuentes. Looking at the Gothic in Latin American literature and film, this book is a groundbreaking study that brings a fresh perspective to Latin American creative culture.

This fascinating 1873 publication is a version of the catalogue produced by the Wedgwood company almost one hundred years earlier, in 1787. Its editor, the feminist writer Eliza Meteyard (1816-79), was a friend of the Wedgwood/Darwin families, and had published a two-volume biography of Josiah Wedgwood in 1865. She explains in her preface that the sixth (and last) such catalogue of Wedgwood's lifetime, 'having been long out of print ... is thus verbally reprinted, without other alteration than a few press corrections and the insertion of various illustrations from the Life of Wedgwood'. A brief history of the catalogues is provided, followed by a long list of the cameos, intaglios, figurines, vases and dinner, tea and coffee services which the firm offered. Wedgwood also advised on how to form a collection of cameos, which are listed by subject: sets containing Greek gods, or kings of France, or popes were available.

The Other Side of Silence The Far Side of Time: The Sculpture of Hib Sabin
Hib Sabin's wood sculpture is focused mainly on animal imagery - raven, owl, bear, coyote, mountain lion and hawk - as it relates to human nature and the human condition. The roots of his sculpture are to be found in Shamanism, the mythologies of world cultures and more recently in modern poetry and philosophical movements such as Existentialism. The subject matter of his early carvings are of Shamanic ritual implements: healing wands, soul retrievers, talking sticks, dancing sticks and especially masks. Gradually, after extensive travels across the globe, he began to explore a number of the world's rich mythologies and his subject matter moving beyond the realms of Shamanism, but always using the prism of animal imagery. Since 2008, his inspiration has come from many sources, including European Existentialist theory, and modern poets such as Leonard Cohen, Ted Hughes, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost and Dylan Thomas. The structure of the book is broken down into three segments: the exploration of Hib's roots in Shamanism; the expansion of his vision into a larger more global mythic universe; and an analysis of the themes that have driven his creative process in recent years.

Van Gogh and Britain
Van Gogh and Britain at Tate Britain will be the first major exhibition both to explore the impact of British culture on Vincent van Gogh and to trace the introduction of his art into Britain and its legacy in the works of British painters. Published to accompany the show, this lavishly illustrated publication illustrates fifty van Gogh paintings, and traces the story from the artist's obscure years in England in the 1870s through his growing influence and reputation to iconic status in the 1950s. These works are accompanied by paintings by British artists that affected him and which he in turn inspired. The publication looks at van Gogh's time in Britain in his early twenties (1873-6), investigating his experience of the largest city in the world and the ideas, books, paintings and prints which caught his attention. These came to the fore in new ways in the following decade when van Gogh became an artist, and reading and the collecting of prints and illustrations informed both his ideals and his practical investigations of a radical, egalitarian style. After his move to France, van Gogh's earlier preoccupations were woven into his wider experience and his dramatically original late works. Van Gogh's brief participation in the cosmopolitan art scene in Paris brought him into contact with British-based painters and collectors who were some of the first to respond to his work, but its full impact came in the twentieth century. The publication focuses on the first displays of van Gogh's work before the First World War and the establishment of his reputation following the war, and then on the Second World War and its aftermath, when the artist's life and work became renowned as an embodiment of embattled human creativity. Essays by leadng experts will explore how van Gogh's work became such an inspiration to modern British artists in the twentieth century, from Sickert to Bacon. EDITOR

Offering an examination of the paragone, meaning artistic rivalry, in nineteenth-century France and England, this book considers how artists were impacted by prevailing aesthetic theories, or institutional and cultural paradigms, to compete in the art world. The paragone has been considered primarily in the context of Renaissance art history, but in this book readers will see how the legacy of this humanistic competitive model survived into the late nineteenth century.

OVEREXPOSED is composed of a series of nine unauthorized photos of high-ranking U.S. intelligence officials of the NSA, CIA, NI, and FBI who were related to Edward Snowden's revelations. The appropriated material was found by monitoring photos and selfies published on Internet public platforms without the control of the officials. The images were reproduced with the street art HD Stencils technique, and they were disseminated onto public walls throughout major cities. The artwork satirizes the era of ubiquitous surveillance and overly-mediated political personas by exposing the officials accountable for secretive mass surveillance and over-classified intelligence programs. New modes of circulation, appropriation, contextualization, and technical reproduction of images are integrated into this artwork.

Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture
The slime mould Physarum polycephalum was a source of explosive growth of bioengineered hybrid sensing and computing devices in the past decade. Being in its vegetative state, the plasmodium, the slime mould configures its protoplasmic network to optimize its geometry with relation to patterns of attractants and repellents. The slime mould's adaptability, polymorphism and aestheticism inspired artists and architects. The slime mould has been seen as a self-conscious liquid form continuously changing its shape in response to external stimulation and due to interactions of thousands of micro-oscillators in its body. Elusiveness is a magic feature of the slime mould. One moment the slime mould gives you a solution to a mathematical problem by a shape of its body, next moment it changes its shape and the solution ,disappears. Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture presents a set of unique chapters written by leading artists, architects and scientists, which resulted from creative translations of the slime mould behaviour into forms and sounds, unconventional investigations and sensorial experiences and the slime mould ability to remove boundaries between living and artificial, solid and fluid, science and arts. The book gives readers unique tools for designing architectural forms and creative works using the slime mould, understanding how pro-cognitive living substrates can be used in everyday life, it sparks new ideas and initiates further progress in many fields or arts, architecture, science and engineering. Key features: - Vibrant concepts of biology, arts, non-linear sciences and architecture are inter-reacting in the book towards the formation of an unorthodox vision of future and an emergent concepts of the physical state, where science and are becoming a singly unity; - Striking polymorphism of contributions, which reflects the vibrant development of the field of bio-inspired and bio-integrated arts and architecture. This makes the publication stand out from the standard art, science or architecture book; - The book provides an in-depth insight and first hand working experiences into current production of art works at the edge of art, science and technology. It provides a unique compendium of works made by a new type of artists and architects who is not only concerned with the visual level of their work but also with scientific conceptualization and theoretical reflection on contextualization of their studies and work in interdisciplinary fields; - Contributions from main stream scientists demonstrate unusual artistic and architectural developments; - All contributors of in the book are from leading artists, architects or scientists, with an impressive track record of exhibitions, installations, and scientific and engineering discoveries. They provide in-depth insights and first-hand working experiences into current developments of art and architectural works at the edge of art, science and technology.

Street Art of Resistance
This book explores how street art has been used as a tool of resistance to express opposition to political systems and social issues around the world. Aesthetic devices such as murals, tags, posters, street performances and caricatures are discussed in terms of how they are employed to occupy urban spaces and present alternative visions of social reality. Based on empirical research, the authors use the framework of creative psychology to explore the aesthetic dimensions of resistance that can be found in graffiti, art, music, poetry and other creative cultural forms. Chapters include case studies from countries including Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Egypt, Ireland, Mexico and Spain to shed new light on the social, cultural and political dynamics of street art not only locally, but globally. This innovative collection will be of particular interest to scholars of social and political psychology, urban studies and the wider sociologies and is essential reading for all those interested in the role of art in social change.

Look Again: How to Experience the Old Masters
The art of the past can seem very far away, obscured both by time and by knotty academic theory. Foregrounding the experience of the contemporary viewer, Look Again shows how this need not be the case. Ossian Ward's simple, ten-step programme acts as an aid to looking, breaking down the often obscure strategies of the Old Masters into intuitive categories - from Art as Honesty to Art as Vision. Look Again's novel approach is influenced by John Berger's Ways of Seeing, but is here updated for the art world of the 21st century. Key to this book is an emphasis on ways of experiencing Old Masters - more than just looking. Just as contemporary art should be judged by how it moves us, cajoles us and envelops us, so too can the great paintings of the world be seen as immersive, captivating, even participatory experiences. Ward does not deny the specific complexities and barriers associated with looking at art from other eras. Instead he offers readers a new formula to help illuminate this kind of art. His method not only provides the viewer with the tools to interpret a work of art, but also assumes that we hold some of this knowledge within ourselves already. In other words, everyone can share the enriching experience of Old Master paintings.

Non-Representational Theory and the Creative Arts
This book presents distinct perspectives from both geographically-oriented creative practices and geographers working with arts-based processes. In doing so, it fills a significant gap in the already sizeable body of non-representational discourse by bringing together images and reflections on performances, art practice, theatre, dance, and sound production alongside theoretical contributions and examples of creative writing. It considers how contemporary art making is being shaped by spatial enquiry and how geographical research has been influenced by artistic practice. It provides a clear and concise overview of the principles of non-representational theory for researchers and practitioners in the creative arts and, across its four sections, demonstrates the potential for non-representational theory to bring cultural geography and contemporary art closer than ever before.

Orientaciones trasnpacificas is a wide-ranging study that presents a cross-temporal examination of the discernible orientation toward East and South Asia that pervades the work of well-known intellectual and artistic Mexican figures. It goes from the later years of the regime of Porfirio Diaz in the 1900s to the cultural imaginaries of nationalism in the 1920s, and from the Cold War to the global spread of neoliberalism at the turn of the new century. Understanding Orientalism as a form of situated and historical orientation grounded in Mexico's own (post)colonial formation, the book argues that, although after its independence Mexico's important commercial connection with the Asian continent became attenuated, East and South Asia continued to be a crucial point of reference for Mexico to assert global centrality and to anchor discourses of cultural singularity or political exception. By tracing the intellectual turn to Asia in Jose Juan Tablada's travel narratives and art essays, Manuel Alvarez Bravo's photography landscapes, Jose Vasconcelos's writing about mestizaje and in his literacy campaigns, Roger Bartra's Marxist political economy writings, Rafael Bernal's hard boiled novel, Marcela Rodriguez and Mario Bellatin's musical composition in Ciudad Juarez, and Shinpei Takeda's art installations in Tijuana, the book recasts the colonial emphasis on a transatlantic relationship with Europe and displays a transpacific and planetary imagination-eschewing the Atlantic dialectic between ex colony and metropole-that defined Mexican conceptualizations of literary and cultural modernity. Thus, Orientaciones trasnpacificas shows that Mexican orientalism played an instrumental (though often unremarked) role in the cultural definitions that became fundamental to the field of Mexican and Latin American Studies, such as the notion of hybrid modernity (in racial, aesthetic, economic, or temporal terms).

(re)Positioning Site Dance: Local Acts, Global Perspectives
Site-based dance performance and sited movement explorations implicate dance makers, performers, and audience members in a number of dialogical processes between body, site, and environment. This book aims to articulate international approaches to the making, performing, and theorizing of site-based dance. Drawing on perspectives from three practitioner-academics based in three distinct world regions--Europe, North America, and Oceania--the authors explore a range of practices that engage with socio-cultural, political, ecological, and economic discourses, and demonstrate how these discourses both frame and inform processes of site dance making as well as shape the ways in which such interventions are conceived and evaluated. Intended for artists, scholars, and students, (Re)Positioning Site Dance is an important addition to the theoretical discourse on place and performance in an era of global socio-political and ecological transformation.

Walter Benjamin Reimagined: A Graphic Translation of Poetry, Prose, Aphorisms, and Dreams
An illuminated tour of Walter Benjamin's ideas; a graphic translation; an encyclopedia of fragments. Walter Benjamin was a man of letters, an art critic, an essayist, a translator, a philosopher, a collector, and an urban flaneur. In his writings, he ambles, samples, and explores. With Walter Benjamin Reimagined, Frances Cannon offers a visual and literary response to Benjamin's work. With detailed and dreamlike pen-and-ink drawings and hand-lettered text, Cannon gives readers an illuminated tour of Walter Benjamin's thoughts-a graphic translation, an encyclopedia of fragments. Cannon has not created a guide to Benjamin's greatest ideas-this is not an illustrated Walter Benjamin cheat sheet-but rather a beautifully rendered work of graphic literature. Cannon doesn't plod through thickets of minutiae; she strolls-a flaneuse herself-using Benjamin's words and her own drawings to construct a creative topography of Benjamin's writing. Phrases from Unpacking My Library, for example, are accompanied by images of flying papers, stray books, stacked books-books not yet touched by the mild boredom of order -and a bearded mage. Cannon takes the reader through different periods of Benjamin's writing: Artifacts of Youth, nostalgic musings on his childhood; Fragments of a Critical Eye, early writings, political observations, and cultural criticism; Athenaeum of Imagination, meditations on philosophy and psychology; A Stroll through the Arcades, Benjamin's unfinished magnum opus; and A Collection of Dreams and Stories, experimental and fantastical writings. With drawings and text, Cannon offers a phantasmagorical tribute to Benjamin's wandering eye.
