The Education of a Circus Clown: Mentors, Audiences, Mistakes
2017 Freedley Award Finalist, Theatre Library Association 2016 Best Circus Book of the Year, Stuart Thayer Prize, Circus Historical Society The 1960s American hippie-clown boom fostered many creative impulses, including neo-vaudeville and Ringling's Clown College. However, the origin of that impulse, clowning with a circus, has largely gone unexamined. David Carlyon, through an autoethnographic examination of his own experiences in clowning, offers a close reading of the education of a professional circus clown, woven through an eye-opening, sometimes funny, occasionally poignant look at circus life. Layering critical reflections of personal experience with connections to wider scholarship, Carlyon focuses on the work of clowning while interrogating what clowns actually do, rather than using them as stand-ins for conceptual ideas or as sentimental figures.

Phillimore's Edinburgh
In his day, Reginald P. Phillimore (1855-1941) was one of Britain's leading postcard artists. A great friend of the Athens of the North, he settled in North Berwick and delighted in depicting various Edinburgh locations, both famous and obscure. Artistically, these cards are some of the finest he produced. He sold his cards through a network of dealers, all over Britain, and since he employed a local schoolgirl to hand colour his drawings, no two coloured cards are the same. Although some of Phillimore's Edinburgh postcards are easy to come by, others are exceedingly rare and sought after today. This book brings together, for the first time ever, all of Phillimore's Edinburgh postcards, to present a fascinating and unique picture of the highways and byways of the great city, from a series of vintage views by a master artist. Phillimore's Edinburgh makes use of all of his ninety-five Edinburgh postcards, with explanatory text and a few supplementary illustrations. It will appeal both to those who know and love Edinburgh and to postcard collectors.

Early Chinese Jades
INTRODUCTION The early Chinese believed that jade had an immortality of its own and was impervious to decay. For them there was no substance nobler, purer, more durable, more pre-eminently suitable for the fashioning of religious emblems and the embodiment of dogma. Round jade, as round a kernel, the whole body of early Chinese civilisation crystallised. And yet they were not the first discoverers or users of jade, for the Babylonians made seal cylinders of jade, and Professor Elliott Smith believes that the Turkestan jade mountains and rivers were first worked by miners from Mesopotamia who, passing on legends about the magical qualities of jade, infected the Chinese with their beliefs. From the third millennium he says, the mines on the S.E. of the Caspian were being exploited and contact was established between Babylonians, Elamites, and the population of Turkestan. But however early the contacts, assumed or established, we can state truthfully that the Chinese made jade particularly and everlastingly their own, embodying in it their traditions, their religion, their administrative system. They may have derived their belief in the life-giving properties of jade from the Elamites, or have come to attach a magical value to its presence from the Babylonian miners, but for neither of these peoples was it the vehicle of supernatural beliefs, and, penetrate as far back as we may into pre-history, we cannot find a time in China in which jade was not used for religious purposes. What perhaps emphasises the peculiar position of jade in Chinese culture is the fact that other early peoples used jade, although for them it had no significance greater or even as great as gold or pearls. Jade was dug and worked in many parts of Europe. Hatchets have been found in Switzerland, nephrite celts in South Italy and France, Germany, Dalmatia, and Hungary. Jade celts, too, were discovered by Schliemann at Hissarlik, but by no people save the Chinese has jade been made the nucleus and the shrine of a civilisation-although its use was distributed in Turkestan, Persia, Siberia, India, Lake Baikal, and Japan, and to a minor degree the substance was prized by most Asiatic peoples. It is only during the last two decades that collectors have begun to realise the enormous importance of jade. Dr. Laufer broke new ground when, in 1912, he published his great work, xde, A Study in Chinese Archzology and Religion. His object in writing this book was rather ethnological than artistic. He himself calls it a contribution to the l Anthropology, Encyclopzdia Britannica.....

The Film Photography Book
Film is back! And about time, too. We just were getting a little too comfortable with the idea of snapping selfies on our dumb phones at the ends of vanity sticks when film returned to slap us up. Film is not for the faint of heart. It takes serious effort, serious time. It costs money for each frame, from buying the film to paying to develop it or developing it in a film tank. Only those interested in the unique and fantastic look of film will brave this path. The Film Photography Book is for us, those interested in all aspects of film photography from choosing cameras and lenses, to choosing film and subjects, to buying chemicals and processing. The book can serve as a refresher to those who now are returning to film photography after a long absence, and as a getting started course for those who never shot film in their lives. It's an adventure, a new Voyage of Photography, part of Shawn M. Tomlinson's Guide to Photography Series, the beginning of a sub-series about film photography. Come on along.

Mad March Hares
A collection of paintings and poetry by illustrator Vikki Yeates. Vikki has painted many hares over the years; they have become a happy obsession! This book brings most of them together in one volume, together with the poetry which often features in her paintings. She uses the Automatic Writing technique to scratch stories and poems into the artwork. It is not always possible to read the poems in their entirety, as the writing often continues off of the page, or certain areas are obscured by the paint. So this book is also a record of four of her poems/prose: 'Mad March Hares', 'Spirit', 'Moonlight Hares' and 'The Crow and the Moon'. The latter is the first poem Vikki wrote using this method - and does not feature any hares!

Preternatural
Preternatural is an exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition Preternatural, 9 December 2011 to 17 February 2012, Ottawa, Canada (http://www.preternatural.ca). The exhibition comprises three installation sites and 9 artists, all of whom explore the idea that art itself is a form of preternatural pursuit, in which they explore the bewildering condition of being in between the mundane and the marvelous in nature. It questions a world that understands itself as accessible, reachable, and 'knowable' and counters it with a consideration of this heterogenous proposition. Celina Jeffery is Associate Professor of Art History and Theory, and the Chair of the Visual Arts program at the University of Ottawa. She is the co-editor (with Gregory Minissale) of Global and Local Art Histories (2007) and the co-founder and editor of Drain Magazine: A Journal of Contemporary Art and Culture (2004-present).

Soviet Historical Drama: Its Role in the Development of a National Mythology
The taste for history is the most ariswcratic of all tastes. Ernest Rerum Our century is pre-eminently an historical century . . . . Even art has now become pre-eminently historical. The historical novel and drama interest each and everyone more at present than do similar works belonging to the realm of pure fiction. ! Although Belinskii was writing in 1841, his statement could equally well apply to the Russia of a century later, when the interest in historical fiction had become, if anything, more intense. In fact, the abundance of Soviet historical novels and plays tempts one to believe Heine, when he said that the people want their history handed to them by the poet, not the historian. The infatuation with history to which Belinskii referred was not, however, indigenous to Russia; it was part of a rage, largely inspired by Waiter Scott, which had swept western Europe in the early nine- teenth century, and which soon spread to Russia. Today, Scott's star has been eclipsed in the West, but it still burns brightly in the Soviet Union. Indeed, it can be said that the West has not only rejected Scott, but, to a considerable extent, the historical novel and playas well. As one writer recently put it: The reading public, brought up on a strict diet of sex and science, prefers to take its history undiluted- in the form of unexpurgated memoirs and frank biographies.

The Fundamentals of Sonic Art and Sound Design
This book introduces a subject that will be new to many: sonic arts. The application of sound to other media (such as film or video) is well known and the idea of sound as a medium in its own right (such as radio) is also widely accepted. However, the idea that sound could also be a distinct art form by itself is less well established and often misunderstood. The Fundamentals of Sonic Arts & Sound Design introduces, describes and begins the process of defining this new subject and to provide a starting point for anyone who has an interest in the creative uses of sound. The book explores the worlds of sonic arts and sound design through their history and development, and looks at the present state of these extraordinarily diverse genres through the works and words of established artists and through an examination of the wide range of practices that currently come under the heading of sonic arts. The technologies that are used and the impact that they have upon the work are also discussed. Additionally, The Fundamentals of Sonic Arts & Sound Design considers new and radical approaches to sound recording, performance, installation works and exhibitions and visits the worlds of the sonic artist and the sound designer.

This is a mystical book of lines which create organic images and inter-flowing shapes for you to colour ...freeing your creative mind flow as you follow their expressive forms. Some are like the tracings of irregular ripples that oscillate out-wards, gradually searching for and finding form. Others are like tattoo holograms frozen in a moment of intense meaning ...much like the symbolic characters in a pack of tarot cards. And yet others have the ephemeral delicacy of a beautiful mandala. They reach into the soul to evoke the entire emotional repertoire of light and dark that co-exist within us all. The book contains 70 artworks drawn by Jody; some complete works, as well as sections from other pieces, which have been enhanced to assist you in developing your creative expression of colour. Religious Schism in the Russian Aristocracy 1860-1900 Radstockism and Pashkovism: Radstockism and Pashkovism
My research in the intellectual and spiritual sphere of nineteenth- century Russia revealed that ever since the penetration of the fashion- able anti-ecclesiastical views of the Encyclopedists into Russia, the aristocrats had grown indifferent to religion. The spiritual vacuum created as a result of such conditions could not last, however, for a prolonged period of time; least of all during the decades following the r860's when Russia's moral, socio-political, and religious problems were most acute. The subsequent quest for salvation and the general religious inquiry among Russia's elite, as they were known in the West, manifested itself chiefly in the writings of such profound religious and philosophical thinkers as V. Solov'ev, K. Leont'ev, N. Fedorov, Dos- toevskij, and Tolstoj. They constitute, however, only a fraction of those tormented by the longing for religious truth and guidance in an age of transition and uncertainty. There existed among Russia's aristocracy in the second half of the nineteenth century a widespread socio-religious movement known as Radstockism or Pashkovism, which aimed for a religious renovation and with it a transformation of Russia on an ethical and moral basis. These aristocrats were men and women who in their youth were in- different to all faith, but who had never abandoned the search for a solution to their own and to Russia's problems. The solution to these problems they believed to be based on moral and religious principles found in Evangelical Christianity.

Behind the Picture: Art and Evidence in the Italian Renaissance
The Roman author Pliny tells the story - well known in the Renaissance - of the famous Greek painter Apelles hiding behind one of his pictures to overhear the comments of spectators. Martin Kemp takes this motif as an effective point of entry into the problem of what lies behind the business of picture-making in the Renaissance, in particular the role of the artist and the function of works of art in relation to their various kinds of audience. Kemp examines a wealth of visual and written evidence, making sense of the often contradictory implications of the contemporary sources that survive for the same artist and indeed for the same work of art. He points out that whereas artists' contracts suggest the cobbler at work and inventories suggest that the products of painters were considerably less valued than those of bed manufacturers, the rise of written theory and the web of criticism woven by humanist authors increasingly depict the artist as an intellectual, as a philosopher-poet with respect to subject matter, and as a scientific investigator of natural appearances. Kemp provides us with an introductory text on Italian Renaissance art that brings the period alive through extensive quotations from original sources. Giving access to a range of traditional and more recent concerns in art history through the application of various approaches to specific sets of raw material, this book is an important and illuminating contribution to current debates in cultural history. Martin Kemp is professor of art history at the University of Oxford and author of 'Leonardo on Painting', 'Leonardo da Vinci' and 'The Science of Art', all published by Yale University Press.

Space and Incongruence: The Origin of Kant's Idealism
Kantian transcendental idealism is the thesis that fundamental aspects of experience are contributed by the perceiving subject rather than by the things experienced, and are not features of things as they exist independently of sensible perceivers. This is undoubtedly the most striking and at the same time the most puzzling of Kant's Critical views. It is striking because nothing could be less commonsensical than the beliefthat things as we perceive them have nothing in common with things as they are independently ofbeing per- ceived. From a more technical point of viewthe doctrine is puzzling because Kant apparently does not support it very well. Beginning with Kant's con- temporaries, critics have pointed out that among all the arguments for the theory in the CritiqueofPureReason, none entails the conclusion that things in themselves cannot be like objects of sense experience in any way. So, for example, although transcendental idealism is compatible with Kant's theory of synthetic a priori knowledge, there is nothing in the analysis of the syn- thetic a priori ruling out the possibility that features contributed to experi- ence by the perceiving subject correspond to characteristics of things in them- selves, although we might never know this to be so. And even though Kant sees transcendental idealism as a solution to the Antinomies, this is at best indirect support for the view;there are undoubtedly other ways to get around these traditional metaphysical puzzles.

The Modern Musician
What is The Modern Musician? It's not just another theory book, chord book, scale book, or any other book that promises you instant professional musicianship. It is, however, a book designed to give you the right tools in an easy to understand format that will ultimately guide you to becoming a better musician. Other books on chords, scales, theory, technique, and beyond attempt to communicate many of the same concepts with varied stylistic approaches. Unfortunately, most are very confusing. So this is where The Modern Musician steps in. It's got everything from theory to scales, chords to voicings, and everything in between.
