Contemporary Art and Disability Studies
This book presents interdisciplinary scholarship on art and visual culture that explores disability in terms of lived experience. It will expand critical disability studies scholarship on representation and embodiment, which is theoretically rich, but lacking in attention to art. It is organized in five thematic parts: methodologies of access, agency, and ethics in cultural institutions; the politics and ethics of collaboration; embodied representations of artists with disabilities in the visual and performing arts; negotiating the outsider art label; and first-person reflections on disability and artmaking. This volume will be of interest to scholars who study disability studies, art history, art education, gender studies, museum studies, and visual culture.

Theatre: Art Brut - The Collection
The theatre is the central theme of this fourth volume in our series titled 'Art Brut - The Collection', published to coincide with the fourth Art Brut Biennale. After exploring architecture, vehicles, and bodies, attention turns to the theatre, a theme that is developed in its various aspects. The simplest example is the depiction of theatrical architecture, as in the work of Eugen Gabritschevsky or Victorien Sardou. Other artists create works that are intimately connected to the world of theatre, however without necessarily being a part of it. For example, for Giovanni Battista Podesta or Vahan Poladian, a public stage is a place where they put on a 'performance' that responds to a society that consigns them to its margins. Their intrinsically ephemeral approach uses clothing or accessories as a means of communication and to have their voices or protestations heard. Other artists conceive whole cosmogonies that take the form of a gigantic staging of a fanciful, phantasmagoric world, as in the case of Aloise Corbaz, whose work is to be viewed as a 'Theatre of the universe', or in that of Marguerite Burnat-Provins, with her graphic work titled 'Ma Ville'. The book includes over 100 illustrations, many of which are published for the first time, carefully chosen to enable the reader to explore the theme of the theatre in Outsider Art, or Art Brut. Also available in the series: Vehicles ISBN 9788874396580, Architecture ISBN 9788874397105, Body ISBN 9788874397884.

Artist in Exile: The Visual Diary of Baroness Hyde de Neuville
Artist in Exile is the first in-depth, illustrated exploration of the life and work of Anne Marguerite Josephine Henriette Rouille de Marigny, Baroness Hyde de Neuville (1771-1849), who arrived in America in 1807 as a refugee from Napoleonic France and embarked on an extraordinary journey of discovery. Her unparalleled, beguiling, watercolors and drawings--over 200, made while traveling through seven countries and on the high seas, published here together with previously unpublished documents and letters--provide an invaluable historical visual record of the early years of the American Republic and its racially diverse population. From this exciting material Henriette emerges as a cosmopolitan artist who exerted her influence in political and social circles on both sides of the Atlantic, courageously traversing the European continent, unescorted, to beg Napoleon to spare her husband's life.Neuville's status as a woman, and an outsider, made her a particularly keen and sympathetic observer of individuals from a range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. She drew the earliest ethnographically correct images of indigenous Americans, together with vistas predating the works of other traveler-artists, and long-vanished buildings. Although she arrived in America as an outcast, by the end of her second residency, as the celebrated wife of the French Minister Plenipotentiary, she was interacting with political leaders and making her mark on society in Washington, DC and New York City. Artist in Exile tells her compelling story.

The Value of Aesthetics: Oaxacan Woodcarvers in Global Economies of Culture
Unlike many other handicrafts in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which have long cultural and historical trajectories, Oaxacan woodcarving began in the second half of the twentieth century and has always been done for the commercial market. In The Value of Aesthetics, Alanna Cant explores how one family's workshop in the village of San Martin Tilcajete has become the most critically and economically successful, surpassing those of neighbors who use similar materials and techniques. The dominance of this family is tied to their ability to produce a new aesthetic that appeals to three key economies of culture : the tourist market for souvenirs, the national market for traditional Mexican artesanias, and the international market for indigenous art. Offering a new analytical model by which anthropologists can approach visual aesthetics and conceptualize the power of artworks as socially active objects, The Value of Aesthetics shows how aesthetic practices produce and redefine social and political relationships. By investigating the links between aesthetics and issues of production, authorship, ownership, and identity, Cant shows aesthetic change to be a process that ultimately repackages everyday life into commodified objects in Oaxaca.

Pappy Kitchens and the Saga of Red Eye the Rooster
O. W. Pappy Kitchens (1901-1986) was born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, and began painting at age sixty-seven. His self-taught, narrative, visual art springs directly from the oral tradition of parable and storytelling with which he grew up. A self-declared folk artist, Kitchens claimed, I paint about folks, what folks see and what folks do. His magnum opus, The Saga of Red Eye the Rooster, was painted between 1973 and 1976 and presents a homespun Pilgrim's Progress in the form of a beast fable. Kitchens's most ambitious allegorical work, this fable consists of sixty panels, each one measuring fifteen inches square, composed of mixed materials on paper, and executed in three groups of twenty. Kitchens follows Red Eye from foundling to funeral, exploring the life of this extraordinary bird. Red Eye's quasi-human behavior inevitably maneuvers him into conflicts with antagonists of all sorts. He encounters violence, avarice, lust, greed, and most of the other seven deadly sins, dispatching them in heroic fashion until he finally succumbs to his own fatal flaw. In addition to The Saga of Red Eye the Rooster, the volume features personal photos of Kitchens as well as additional works by the artist. Written by distinguished artist and Kitchens's once son-in-law William Dunlap, with an introduction by renowned curator Jane Livingston, Pappy Kitchens and the Saga of Red Eye the Rooster brings much-needed exposure to the life and work of a key Mississippi figure.

Maud Lewis: Paintings for Sale
From black cats to iconic snowscapes, Maud Lewis paints our waking dreams. One of Canada's most beloved folk artists, Maud Lewis was famous in her lifetime for her brightly coloured and endearing paintings of rural Nova Scotia. Working from her tiny, road-side house in Marshalltown, she produced hundreds of small works that captured aspects of rapidly changing country life. Until now, the story of her difficult life has dominated the discussion of her art: her triumph over her physical disabilities and poverty, the harsh treatment she received at the hands of her family, and her alliance by chance with her husband Everett Lewis, who enabled her successful painting career over many decades. This book, accompanied by an exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, will examine the aesthetic achievements of Maud Lewis's paintings -- her serial repetition of images and motifs and the dizzying variety that she brought to the problems of picture making. From her black cats and kittens, to her cart horses and oxen hauling logs, to her quayside scenes of ships in port and the Maritime landscape in all seasons, Maud Lewis made paintings that still delight in their optimism and buoyant vitality.Featuring a comprehensive selection of paintings drawn from leading Maud Lewis collectors in Nova Scotia, Maud Lewis: Paintings for Sale offers a unique opportunity to experience the range and depth of her work.Accompanying exhibition on at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection until January 5, 2020.

Henry Darger
Self-taught and working in isolation until his death in 1973, Henry Darger realized an elaborate fantasy world of remarkable beauty and strangeness through hundreds of paintings and an epic written narrative. Angel-like Blengins with butterfly wings, natural catastrophes, innocent girls, and murderous soldiers all appear in Darger's scenes, which are reproduced in this book in double-page and gatefold illustrations. In the volume's introductory essay, Klaus Biesenbach examines the radical originality of Darger's art, including his use of collage, incorporation of religious themes and iconography, and frequent juxtaposition of innocence with violence. An essay by Brooke Davis Anderson illuminates Darger's source materials and techniques, while another by Michael Bonesteel puts Darger's life in the context of his work. The book also includes Darger's autobiography, A History of My Life, introduced by Carl Watson. The only book of its kind, Henry Darger offers an authoritative, balanced, and insightful look at an American master.

This book is a mosaic or quilt of folk art around the world, from polychrome clay figures made in Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla (Mexico) to the baskets Maori women create in New Zealand, from Japanese lacquer work and decorated paddles to black dolls in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The creative impulse found in three continents, four countries, and four geographical regions are juxtaposed to make up a harmonious whole. The book carries out a detailed dissection of a variety of ethnic, racialized, and gender representations in their contemporary forms.

THE TEMPLE OF SILENCE: FORGOTTEN WORKS & WORLDS OF HERBERT CROWLEY
1. Key selling points: * In THE TEMPLE OF SILENCE we discover the work of one of the great lost visionaries of modern art, comics and illustration. Herbert Crowley is an artist who exhibited alongside Picasso and Van Gogh at the 1913 Armory Show, was published in the New York Herald alongside Winsor McCay, and whose work was archived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And yet he is completely and utterly unknown, and the vast majority of his work has never been seen in any form. This book tells the impossible story of how that happened, and makes a profound case for Crowley as a historically important and deeply relevant artist of the 20th century. * Though Crowley is incredibly obscure, that very obscurity becomes an ironic selling point -- like a Henry Darger or Vivian Meier, he's a visionary who has been totally unknown, both during his life and to history. * The book features unparalelled production and gorgeous design by Paul Kepple of Headcast Design. * The deep-dive 20,000 word biography crisscrosses history and culture, showing where Crowley's path crossed with James Joyce, Peggy Gugenheim, Robert Frost, Carl Jung, and more. * Jung plays a huge part in the story, as Crowley as his wife were analysands moved to Switzerland to live on Jung's compound. The book includes never before seen correspondence and writing by Jung, and fans of Jung's theories about archetypes and mandalas will be intrigued by Crowley's art, which resonated directly with these ideas. * Our Kickstarter campaign for THE TEMPLE OF SILENCE was a sensation, raising over $125,000 to fund production of this book about a totally unknown artist. * This edition collects the short novel THE WILLOWS with 4 short stories spanning the range of themes throughout Blackwood's astonishing career. 2. The competition: What is the competition and how does this book overcome it? * There are many beautiful hardcover art books out there, produced by companies like Taschen, Phaidon, and Abrams. The small company Sunday Press also produces large oversized, beautiful books about little-known artists. These are our strategies to overcome the competition: * HIGHER PRODUCTION VALUES: Our Kickstarter funding allows us to put a large budget into production, giving us access to the finest paper, binding, printing and cover effects. We also produce a limited run of special slipcase editions. Our book is simpler better made and more beautifully designed than the vast majority of books by the above named companies. * LARGER FORMATS: It 11x17 our book is able to reproduce the astonishingly detailed work of Crowley as a massive and inviting size. * WE GO DEEPER: Where the vast majority of popular artbooks feature a brief biography, or a few essays for some cursory context, our book features as exhaustively researched 20,000 some word biography of Herbert Crowley, that in its historical context becomes a beautiful window into the early 20th century New York City avant garde art scene. 3. News tie-in/current relevance: Indicate whether the book is a companion to or complements a recent news story, social trend, upcoming movie, sporting event, or a best- selling title. Why is this book relevant now? * Feeds a growing market for high-end art books and beautiful design objects. * We can spin the revival of Herbert Crowley into a news story in its own right -- Beehive Books specializes in the rediscovery of vital, forgotten figures like Crowley and (to a lesser extend) Algernon Blackwood. We are a revivalist press rescuing treasures from vanishing into the past. * The fact of this genius artist toiling in obscurity for his entire life is compelling and powerful, as the reception of the above named figures like Henry Darger, Vivian Meier and other rediscovered outsider artists can attest. 4. Notable author, series, illustrator, other contributor, or blurber: Describe how a book or author is notable. List any relevant book or author/contributor awards. If there are several notable contributors, name them. List relevant sales figures and titles, or copies sold in the series (must be over than 20,000 copies sold). Point out if the book/author has already received early notable endorsements from name authors or experts or booksellers. Note if the author has been interviewed or reviewed in major US publications or national broadcast or online outlets and list any media connections the author may have. * The book has some star-studded blurbers: Art Spiegelman, Jim Woodring, Denis Kitchen and Carl Jung. * Art Spiegelman: As someone interested in the weirdnesses and Roads Not Taken in the history of comix, Crowley is one of the most idiosyncratic and quirky artists of the cohort. I salute him, and you for doing the heavy-lifting aarchaeological dig of bringing him to the surface again. * Carl Jung: Herbert Crowley's drawings are quite interesting in as much as they contain curious symbols related to the sypathicus as well as to the mutiple luminosities of the collective unconscious. He has been driven in to astounding depths -- quite dangerous when consciousness is not up to it. Such things usually leave a peculiar void in the conscious world after they have passed. * Jim Woodring: There's just nothing else like it, and I think the Wigglemuch is the greatest newspaper strip ever drawn. It's this weird infantile crazy comic with these heavy, heavy themes in it. It's amazing. * Glowing review by Dan Nadel in The Comics Journal: http://www.tcj.com/reviews/herbert-crowley-the-temple-of-silence/ 5. New editions: What percentage is new material?* Has a new chapter, an introduction, or a foreword been added? If the previous edition(s) has sold over 20,000 copies combined, include sales figures here. * This is an original first edition. There has never been another book about Herbert Crowley. * Perhaps most beautiful and deluxe art book ever produced about an unknown artist. * 90% of the material in this book has never been printed, produced or displayed in any form. * Over 250 images and 25,000 word of text. 6. Notable elements: Outline how the packaging or specific content is a selling point (photos, a resource section, unusual shape or size, type of recipes). * huge 11x17 trim size allows full reproduction of the detail in Crowley's astonishing work * limited edition slipcase features die-cut sections and multi-tiered embossing and metal foiling. * Features hundreds of never-previously published illustrations, photographs, comics, sculptures, and set designs, sumptuously produced on deluxe paper uncoated wood-free paper. * Find more info here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/beehivebooks/kickstarter-gold-recurring-dreams-of-herbert-crowl?ref=discovery&term=herbert%20crowley 7. Other fields in the tipsheet: * Market: this will appeal to the high-end market of book collectors; customers of companies like Taschen, Phaidon, Folio Society, Centipede Press, attendees of antiquarian book fairs, etc. Lovers of high design, collectors of limited edition art objects, etc. Fans of modern art, avant garde art, art comics, outsider art, visionary art, etc.

Arguably the most successful African American artist of his day, Horace Pippin (1888-1946) taught himself to paint in the 1930s and quickly earned international renown for depictions of World War I, black families, and American heroes Abraham Lincoln, abolitionist John Brown, and singer Marian Anderson, among other subjects. This volume sheds new light on how the disabled combat veteran claimed his place in the contemporary art world. Organized around topics of autobiography, black labor, artistic process, and gift exchange, it reveals the range of references and critiques encoded in his work and the racial, class, and cultural dynamics that informed his meteoric career. Horace Pippin, American Modern offers a fresh perspective on the artist and his moment that contributes to a more expansive history of art in the 20th century. Featuring more than 60 of Pippin's paintings, it also includes two previously unknown artist's statements- The Story of Horace Pippin as Told by Himself and How I Paint -and an exhibition history and list of artworks drawn from new research.

I Pity the Dolls
This book features the largest collection of Mr. T memorabilia in the world, including over 150 homemade soft sculpture dolls collected and documented over the past 25 years. The dolls were made from a pattern book by Miss Martha Originals from Gadsden, Alabama, that in 1983 could be bought at thousands of craft stores in the country including Wal-Mart. Inspired by the Cabbage Patch Kid craze of the 1980s, the dolls were made in an unknown amount but probably exist in the thousands. Each doll is a labor of love and represents the skill level of each artisan. As modern-day folk art they have been recognized as such by the American Folk Art Museum in NYC, and they have toured the world in art exhibitions, including in NYC, San Francisco, Toronto, and Paris, France.

Hannah Ryggen: Woven Manifestos
Hannah Ryggen created numerous monumental tapestries in her lifetime. Originally trained as a painter, Ryggen began weaving on a standing loom on her self-sufficient farm on the West coast of Norway. She challenged the formal traditions of Norwegian 17th and 18th century textile folk art, combining figurative and abstract elements. She also experimented and developed colours using local plants and other materials she foraged. Her tapestries bravely tackled the social issues of the time, from the atrocities of war to the abuse of power. She created work in direct response to Hitler, Franco, and Mussolini and made powerful statements of support to the victims of Fascism and Nazism. This book features about 25 of Ryggen's signature tapestries including Etiopia (Ethiopia), Drommedod (Death of Dreams), and Vi lever pa enstjerne (We Are Living on a Star). It shows her work representing a different kind of modernism where elements of folk art and mythology are mixed with contemporary life. Haunting and powerful, Ryggen's work was unprecedented at the time, as it expressed her political messages to the public.
