A collection of contemporary DADA art and writing gathered from 26 countries on six continents, focusing on the theme of Artificial Ignorance. If you think Artificial Intelligence will mark the end of humanity then think again. Look at the world around you. Where is the intelligence? Where? Lying is the norm. Incompetence is rampant. Information is soiled with whatever spin is footing the bill. The Kool-Aid is your mind. MAINTENANT 13: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art concentrates on exposing the ignorance with this issue's theme Artificial Ignorance. The issue features the work of leading contemporary thinkers and creators from around the world who utilize collage, juxtaposition, and absurdity as an artistic protest against the madness of the world today. The MAINTENANT series, established in 2008, is an annual collection of the work of renowned and emerging contemporary DADA artists and writers from around the world. I Pity the Dolls
This book features the largest collection of Mr. T memorabilia in the world, including over 150 homemade soft sculpture dolls collected and documented over the past 25 years. The dolls were made from a pattern book by Miss Martha Originals from Gadsden, Alabama, that in 1983 could be bought at thousands of craft stores in the country including Wal-Mart. Inspired by the Cabbage Patch Kid craze of the 1980s, the dolls were made in an unknown amount but probably exist in the thousands. Each doll is a labor of love and represents the skill level of each artisan. As modern-day folk art they have been recognized as such by the American Folk Art Museum in NYC, and they have toured the world in art exhibitions, including in NYC, San Francisco, Toronto, and Paris, France.

A romantic view of 19th-century Canada -- a domestic complement to the work of Bartlett, Constable, and Kane.Anthony Flower (1792-1875) lived and worked in New Brunswick for most of his life. A farmer with a lifelong passion for art, he painted until his death at the age of eighty-three. His work opens a window on a time and place now gone. His paintings depict the life that he saw around him in rural New Brunswick and the events and scenes described in newspapers of the day.For most people in early nineteenth-century North America, reading, writing, and painting took a back seat to the day-to-day struggle to set up homesteads and provide for families. But Flower came from a family and a segment of London society where artistic accomplishment would have been expected and valued.Anthony Flower's art was among the first in New Brunswick to depict rural New Brunswick. Through his paintings, we learn about day-to-day life, religion, how people dressed, what their interests were, and what was important to them, all important pieces to our understanding of everyday life in nineteenth-century Canada.

Harold Newton: The Original Highwayman
From the best-selling author of The Highwaymen comes the story of the group's most prolific and most sought after painter. Harold Newton was an unrecognized vagabond artist who not only captured the beauty of the Florida landscape but transformed it with an artistry that invoked its drama of light, color, and form while hinting at its dark, primordial forces. One of his fellow Highwaymen once observed of his work, It don't have to be signed to know it's a Newton. Combining samples of his paintings with biographical details and reminiscences of family members, customers, and fellow Highwaymen, Gary Monroe creates an homage to the man whose work contributed perhaps more than anyone else's to shaping the romantic imagery and identity of modern Florida. An enigmatic figure, Newton lived an artist's life-aloof and prolific while painting, gregarious and expansive when socializing. Taking to the streets to sell his paintings in 1954, he sold untold numbers of works, showering the state with them. There are Newtons everywhere-especially along Florida's east central coast, the Highwaymen's backyard. Their art is in Miami and the Palm Beaches, Tallahassee and across the Panhandle, Lake City and scattered throughout the interior, and along the west coast as well, in Naples, Sarasota, Tampa, and St. Petersburg-wherever there were homes and offices. More of Newton's paintings remain today than those of any of the other highwaymen. Monroe explains these images' enduring appeal while providing glimpses of the African American artist's life from which they emerged, from a childhood spent moving between Florida and south Georgia, to a pivotal encounter with Bean Backus, to his sojourns at Eddie's Place, to the repossession of his 1959 Ford sedan decorated with beach, ocean, palm trees, and nude girls, to the quiet accumulation of professional patrons eager to purchase another two or three Newtons at every available opportunity. Newton is central to understanding the style of landscape painting that emerged from the Indian River area at mid-century, and Monroe creates an attractive, engaging, and informative account of this pivotal artist and his impact on the popular image of Florida.

Forgotten Women: The Artists
Forgotten Women is a new series of books that uncover the lost herstories of influential women who have refused over hundreds of years to accept the hand they've been dealt and, as a result, have formed, shaped and changed the course of our futures. From leaders and scientists to artists and writers, the fascinating stories of these women that time forgot are now celebrated, putting their achievements firmly back on the map. The Artists brings together the stories of 48* brilliant woman artists who made huge yet unacknowledged contributions to the history of art, including Camille Claudel, the extraordinarily talented sculptor who was always unfairly overshadowed by her lover, Rodin; Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, who has been claimed as the true originator of Marcel Duchamp's Fountain; and Ana Mendieta, the Cuban refugee who approached violence against women through her performance art before her own untimely death. With chapters ranging from Figurative to Photography, and Craft to Conceptual, this is an alternative guide to art history that demonstrates the broad range of artistic movements that included, and were often pioneered by, female artists who have been largely overlooked. *The number of Nobel-prize-winning women.

Essay'd 3: 30 Detroit Artists
Thirty illustrated essays highlighting a variety of Detroit artists. Essay'd 3: 30 Detroit Artists is the third volume in a series of collections that present short, illustrated essays about artists who live and work in Detroit or who have participated in the Detroit art scene in an important way. Stemming from the popular website of the same name, Essay'd 3 seeks to introduce readers to new insight and a fresh perspective on the city's contemporary art practitioners. The arts writers behind the original Essay'd-a professor, a gallerist, and a critic-are joined in Essay'd 3 by twelve guest writers. This remarkable multiplicity of voices enlarges and enriches the overall scope of this ambitious project as it grows to become ever more inclusive of Detroit's astonishingly rich and diverse art community. Essay'd 3 offers thirty new profiles of artists both well-known and under-the-radar. Each artist is profiled by a writer with an avowed interest in and enthusiasm for that artist's work and each essay takes into account biography, context, interpretation, and analysis of individual artworks. Certain themes emerge in this collection, including a turn toward more performing artists, as well as a recurrent concern with the use of the body as a surrogate for social conditions. Some of the artists highlighted in this volume include Richard Lewis, a portrait painter and keen-eyed explorer of souls and their discontents ; photographer Lauren Semivan, who works inserial aggregates of thirty or more black-and-white images, shot with an early twentieth-century, large-format, tripod-mounted camera; experimental performance artists The Hinterlands (Liza Bielby and Richard Newman); and Tom Phardel-sculptor, ceramist, and curator-who has served as teacher and chair of ceramics at the College for Creative Studies for thirty years. With renewed regional, national, and international attention on Detroit and its creative culture, it is more important than ever that the evolving and vital work of the city's artists be documented and made known to the wider public. Art lovers and regional history buffs will appreciate this continued conversation. Featured artists: Susan Aaron-Taylor, Carla Anderson, Jeanne Bieri, Sophie Eisner, Gary Eleinko, Ed Fraga, Eli Gold, Oren Goldenberg, Cynthia Greig, Matthew Angelo Harrison, The Hinterlands, Sydney G. James, Laith Karmo, Nicola Kuperus, Richard Lewis, Billy Mark, Tiff Massey, Allie McGhee, Carole Morisseau, Sabrina Nelson, Tom Phardel, Sharon Que, Yvette Rock, Gary Schwartz, Lauren Semivan, Donita Simpson, Maya Stovall, Andrew Thompson, Millee Tibbs, Timothy Van Laar.

From the Great Pyramid of Giza and Stonehenge to the Colosseum and the Taj Mahal, man has never shied away from an extreme building challenge, and the LEGO builders of the twenty-first century are no different. Whether they're re-creating the works of ancient masters in brick form, building life-size superheroes, breaking world records with skyscraping towers, or firmly adjusting their thinking caps to program plastic robots, some LEGO fans are taking their passion for plastic to the extreme. Sarah Herman, the author of A Million Little Bricks: The Unofficial Illustrated History of the LEGO Phenomenon, has brought together some of the world's most ambitious builders in a fact-filled showcase of truly mind-blowing models for this exciting illustrated book. Extreme Bricks chronicles the first attempts at large-scale models embarked on by the LEGO Group as well as the early work of LEGOLAND artists and builders and contemporary LEGO Certified Professionals who build big for a living. It charts the rise of AFOLS (adult fans of LEGO) and their increasingly spectacular models and gargantuan collections. Packed with two hundred color photographs to shock and surprise, the book also explores the popular building competitions and includes a closer look at the shockingly smart LEGO MINDSTORMS robots that can do everything from solving a Rubik's Cube to building their own LEGO models.
