First published in 1922, in the words of the Dictionary of National Biography it 'remains a classic of autobiography'. In it Maurice Baring describes his early life: childhood in a London Square and at a great country house (Membland, in Devon) in the 1880s: Eton and Cambridge: diplomatic life in the embassies of Paris, Rome and Copenhagen: war correspondent in Manchuria at the time of Russo-Japanese War and then special correspondent for the "Morning Post" in St Petersburg. Baring travelled in Russia until 1914 and gained an intimate knowledge of the social and intellectual life in the years before the Revolution.
