Into the Enchanted Forest: Language, Drama and Science in Primary Schools

This account by teachers and student teachers shows how drama, story and role play in a multisensory environment -- the Enchanted Forest -- promote children's learning. They describe the planning and implementation of the program, analyze the children's learning and reflect on their teaching. The collaboration of students, teachers, university faculty and the children themselves allowed each to develop in creative and nonjudgmental situations. Scientific tasks were negotiated and problems solved, and the holistic language experience provided significantly enhanced bilingual children's grasp of English.
