Schleich Polar Bear Toy Figure
Together with the grizzly bear, the polar bear is the largest land-dwelling predatory animal on earth. Weighing in at more than 500 kg and measuring almost 3 m in length, this bear is twice as large as a Siberian tiger. In order to withstand the extreme Arctic cold, polar bears have a thick layer of fat. They also have an undercoat and a layer of transparent protective fur. This allows them to hunt and swim in very low temperatures. Polar bears are very good swimmers and have been sighted as far as 300 km from the coast. They need a highly sensitive sense of smell when hunting for food and can smell things located 1.5 metres away or buried under a layer of ice one metre thick! Their hearing and vision are comparable with those of a human being. Polar bears are solitary animals but do not have defined territories and enjoy playing with each other. Mating takes place in May and during gestation, the female polar bear nearly triples in weight.

Schleich Giant Turtle
Item size in cm (L x W x H): 8,5 x 5,3 x 3,6 Giant turtles carry large, bony shells on their back that house their head and appendages when danger calls. The largest animal in its habitat, the giant turtle plays a role similar to the elephant's. In its rigorous search for food, it creates pathways that are used by other animals. Turtles can live in groups or on their own; but either way, these reptiles rest during the day after searching for food in the morning. Although stereotyped to be slow and cautious, turtles are known for being speedy when tempted by a treat, being great swimmers and even reaching too far by standing on their hind legs, falling back on their shell. This would result in death though as they are unable to get back on their feet. Turtles have a great defense against predators and danger as they can tuck themselves into their carapace and wait securely. On average, male giant turtles can be almost four feet long, weighing over five hundred pounds. Fun Facts: The oldest recorded giant turtle died at the age of 176.

Schleich Zebra Foal
Item size in cm (L x W x H): 7,1 x 2,9 x 6,2 With bold white stripes, zebras zig-zag. These sleek, striped equids live in the savannah grasslands of eastern and southern Africa where they spend most of the day grazing on grass, leaves, bark, roots, and stems. Each zebra's pattern of stripes is unique. The plains, or common, zebra sport wide stripes on their bodies -- that continue to the undersides -- along with thinner 'shadow' stripes on their hind quarters. Their excellent hearing and vision help them escape predators. They usually live in family groups of one stallion and several mares but often come together in large herds of several hundred zebras. And, once a year, hundreds of thousands of zebras gather to migrate in search of food and water. These herds sometimes mingle with wildebeests, ostrich, and antelope. Zebras tend to be pretty skittish -- who can blame them with all the lions and hyenas around -- and really noisy. Their whinnies, yelps, and barks are their way of communicating with each other. They never wander too far from a source of water and can live about thirty years in the wild. Fun Facts: Zebras have night vision which helps them to keep an eye on their predators.

Schleich Hippopotamus Toy Figure
Although they are herbivores, hippopotamuses are considered as Africa's wildest animals because of their aggressive nature. When they are out of the water, hippos are able to run up to 50 km per hour. They have an influence on the course of rivers and swamps by using the very same walking paths day after day and thus diverting the water into these furrows. Hippos spend daytime in the water and graze in the evening. Within only five hours, a hippo is able to devour more than 70 kg of food! In the water, the males are very keen on defending their territory; however, there is no rivalry once they are ashore. Although they cannot swim, hippos fight, sleep and mate in the water. They live in pods of approximately thirty individuals. With a length of more than five metres and weighing up to two tons, hippos rank among the largest land mammals. They can grow quite old - often up to forty years.

Schleich Sawfish Toy Figure
Sawfish are members of the ray family. The most conspicuous characteristic of this unusual fish is its saw. This is a cartilaginous prolongation of the head which has many teeth along its sides. The sawfish uses this saw to kill swarm fish by swinging its weapon back and forth in the swarm of fish. There is also a sensory organ in the saw which can sense the finest electro-magnetic signals from hidden crabs in the sand. The sawfish can then easily dig out the crabs and eat them. These fish, up to 8 meters long, live in tropical and sub-tropical waters and astonishingly in both salt and fresh water. As a result, this conspicuous fish can be found close to the coast of the Pacific as well as far up the Amazon river.

Schleich White-Tailed Doe Toy Figure
White-tailed deer graze mornings and evenings. They are herbivores and feed on green plants and nuts. Deer live in small groups, usually only the mother and its calves. The males have magnificent antlers and live in small groups of three or four animals. Both the male deer and doe have a red-brown coat in the summer and a grey one in the winter. As they now have almost no natural enemies, deer populations are sometimes so large that they cannot find enough to eat. Deer are ruminant animals like cows, which means they have four stomachs and ruminate half-digested food. This complicated procedure allows the deer to eat twigs for example, which most animals cannot digest.
