Plasticity of Cold Worked Metals: A Deductive Approach
Plasticity Theory is a basic tool of structural analysis used to evaluate ultimate strength and post-elastic behaviour of ductile structures. Modern computing codes make use of it, often by exploiting sophisticated computational analysis and advanced kinematics for large deformation. Yet all this valuable effort has its Achilles heel: the evolution law of the yield surface, also referred to as the work-hardening rule. This book approaches the work-hardening problem in a new and deductive way. It starts with a few elementary, hardly questionable facts and works out their inescapable consequence, following them through until a practical solution is obtained. The analysis it presents will show that plastic yielding of ductile metals is essentially virgin yielding - no matter how strong the material was cold worked originally.

Drills, Taps and Dies
Drilling true and correctly dimensioned holes and cutting accurate threads are basic requirements in all engineering work, but as in all areas of engineering new materials and new techniques lead to alterations in standards. Many of these are primarily concerned with production engineering and are well documented, but others affect the quite different the discontinuation of 'number' drills and the phasing out of cycle threads; add the currently book written with the small user in mind is apparent. Drills, Taps and Dies not only provides comprehensive tables of all the tools available or likely to be encountered but also explains the differences in various types of drill and thread form and their practical applications. One of the features of the book is a thorough examination of the correct size holes for thread tapping, which in itself could save readers the cost of the book several times over, in the avoidance of broken taps!

Contact Mechanics and Friction: Physical Principles and Applications
This application-oriented book introduces readers to the associations and relationships between contact mechanics and friction, providing them with a deeper understanding of tribology. It addresses the related phenomena of contacts, adhesion, capillary forces, friction, lubrication, and wear from a consistent point of view. The author presents (1) methods for rough estimates of tribological quantities, (2) simple and general methods for analytical calculations, and (3) the crossover into numerical simulation methods, the goal being to convey a consistent view of tribological processes at various scales of magnitude (from nanotribology to earthquake research). The book also explores the system dynamic aspects of tribological systems, such as squeal and its suppression, as well as other types of instabilities and spatial patterns. It includes problems and worked-out solutions for the respective chapters, giving readers ample opportunity to apply the theory to practical situations and to deepen their understanding of the material discussed. The second edition has been extended with a more detailed exposition of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, an updated chapter on numerical simulation methods in contact mechanics, a new section on fretting in the chapter on wear, as well as numerous new exercises and examples, which help to make the book an excellent reference guide.

Rheology of Filled Polymer Systems
Polymerie materials have been replacing other conventional materials like metals, glass and wood in a number of applications. The use of various types of fillers incorporated into the polymer has become quite common as a means of reducing cost and to impart certain desirable mechanieal, thermal, electrieal and magnetic properties to the polymers. Oue to the energy crisis and high priees of petrochemieals, there has been a greater demand to use more and more fillers to cheapen the polymerie materials while maintaining and/or improving their properties. The advantages that filled polymer systems have to offer are normally offset to some extent by the increased complexity in the rheological behavior that is introduced by the inclusion of the fillers. Usually when the use of fillers is considered, a compromise has to be made between the improved mechanieal properties in the solid state, the increased difficulty in melt processing, the problem of achieving uniform dispersion of the filler in the polymer matrix and the economics of the process due to the added step of compounding. It has been recognized that addition of filler to the polymer brings a change in processing behavior. The presence of the filler increases the melt viscosity leading to increases in the pressure drop across the die but gives rise to less die swell due to decreased melt elasticity.

System Dynamics with Interaction Discontinuity
This book describes system dynamics with discontinuity caused by system interactions and presents the theory of flow singularity and switchability at the boundary in discontinuous dynamical systems. Based on such a theory, the authors address dynamics and motion mechanism of engineering discontinuous systems due to interaction. Stability and bifurcations of fixed points in nonlinear discrete dynamical systems are presented, and mapping dynamics are developed for analytical predictions of periodic motions in engineering discontinuous dynamical systems. Ultimately, the book provides an alternative way to discuss the periodic and chaotic behaviors in discontinuous dynamical systems.

An Introduction to Turbulent Flow
Most natural and industrial flows are turbulent. The atmosphere and oceans, automobile and aircraft engines, all provide examples of this ubiquitous phenomenon. In recent years, turbulence has become a very lively area of scientific research and application, attracting many newcomers who need a basic introduction to the subject. An Introduction to Turbulent Flow, first published in 2000, offers a solid grounding in the subject of turbulence, developing both physical insight and the mathematical framework needed to express the theory. It begins with a review of the physical nature of turbulence, statistical tools, and space and time scales of turbulence. Basic theory is presented next, illustrated by examples of simple turbulent flows and developed through classical models of jets, wakes, and boundary layers. A deeper understanding of turbulence dynamics is provided by spectral analysis and its applications. The final chapter introduces the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. This well-balanced text will interest graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics, and the physical sciences.

Combustion Thermodynamics and Dynamics
Combustion Thermodynamics and Dynamics builds on a foundation of thermal science, chemistry, and applied mathematics that will be familiar to most undergraduate aerospace, mechanical, and chemical engineers to give a first-year graduate-level exposition of the thermodynamics, physical chemistry, and dynamics of advection-reaction-diffusion. Special effort is made to link notions of time-independent classical thermodynamics with time-dependent reactive fluid dynamics. In particular, concepts of classical thermochemical equilibrium and stability are discussed in the context of modern nonlinear dynamical systems theory. The first half focuses on time-dependent spatially homogeneous reaction, while the second half considers effects of spatially inhomogeneous advection and diffusion on the reaction dynamics. Attention is focused on systems with realistic detailed chemical kinetics as well as simplified kinetics. Many mathematical details are presented, and several quantitative examples are given. Topics include foundations of thermochemistry, reduced kinetics, reactive Navier-Stokes equations, reaction-diffusion systems, laminar flame, oscillatory combustion, and detonation.

This textbook provides engineers with the capability, tools and confidence to solve real-world heat transfer problems. It includes many advanced topics, such as Bessel functions, Laplace transforms, separation of variables, Duhamel's theorem and complex combination, as well as high order explicit and implicit numerical integration algorithms. These analytical and numerical solution methods are applied to topics not considered in most textbooks. Examples include heat exchangers involving fluids with varying specific heats or phase changes; heat exchangers in which axial conduction is a concern; and regenerators. Derivations of important results are presented completely, without skipping steps, which reduces student frustration and improves readability and retention. The examples are not trivial 'textbook' exercises; they are rather complex and timely real-world problems that are inherently interesting. This book integrates the computational software packages Maple, MATLAB (R), FEHT and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) directly with the heat transfer material.

Physics and Technology of Sustainable Energy
This textbook explores the science and tecnologies needed for renewable energy. It examines the properties of the earth's atmosphere for transmitting light in from the sun and mediating outflow of infrared energy from the ground, a role that has an effect on the temperature of the earth. It begins by explaining how the sun works, that is by nuclear fusion, and the basic concepts of quantum tunnelling needed are later expanded to allow a competent treatment of semiconductor physics, the discipline behind solar cells. The book covers wind turbine technology, hydroelectric power and pumped-hydro energy storage. It also talks about the history of the Earth's climate and discusses the effects that the present fossil fuel burning, leading to large emission of greenhouse gas, may have on the future temperature of the earth. The sustainable energy discussed in this book will be available in the long term, past the remaining availability of carbon energy, and is also energy that will not tip the climate into warmer conditions. In connection to this, the action of the atmosphere is analyzed both for its transmission of sunlight to the surface for use in solar power, and in secondary forms such as wind, waves and hydroelectricity. Greenhouse gas impurities, such as carbon dioxide, are also examined for their effects on the atmosphere. Building on this analysis, prospects for sustainable energy and moderate climate are assessed.

Basic Coastal Engineering
The second edition (1997) of this text was a completely rewritten version of the original text Basic Coastal Engineering published in 1978. This third edition makes several corrections, improvements and additions to the second edition. Basic Coastal Engineering is an introductory text on wave mechanics and coastal processes along with fundamentals that underline the practice of coastal engineering. This book was written for a senior or first postgraduate course in coastal engineering. It is also suitable for self study by anyone having a basic engineering or physical science background. The level of coverage does not require a math or fluid mechanics background beyond that presented in a typical undergraduate civil or mechanical engineering curriculum. The material p- sented in this text is based on the author's lecture notes from a one-semester course at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Texas A&M University, and George Washington University, and a senior elective course at Lehigh University. The text contains examples to demonstrate the various analysis techniques that are presented and each chapter (except the first and last) has a collection of problems for the reader to solve that further demonstrate and expand upon the text material. Chapter 1 briefly describes the coastal environment and introduces the re- tively new field of coastal engineering. Chapter 2 describes the two-dimensional characteristics of surface waves and presents the small-amplitude wave theory to support this description.

This book covers the basics of the hydrodynamics and vibration of structures subjected to environmental loads. It describes the interaction of hydrodynamics with the associated vibration of structures, giving simple explanations. Emphasis is placed on the applications of the theory to practical problems. Several case studies are provided to show how the theory outlined in the book is applied in the design of structures. Background material needed for understanding fluid-induced vibrations of structures is given to make the book reasonably self-sufficient. Examples are taken mainly from the novel structures that are of interest today, including ocean and offshore structures and components.Besides being a text for undergraduates, this book can serve as a handy reference for design engineers and consultants involved in the design of structures subjected to dynamics and vibration.

Nano and Bio-Based Technologies for Wastewater Treatment: Prediction and Control Tools for the Dispersion of Pollutants in the Environment
Over the past few decades the boom in the industrial sector has contributed to the release in the environment of pollutants that have no regulatory status and which may have significant impact on the health of animals and humans. These pollutants also refer as emerging pollutants are mostly aromatic compounds which derive from excretion of pharmaceutical, industrial effluents and municipal discharge. Some form of pollutions have also evolved, including the proliferation of acid mine drainage from oxidation or weathering of obsolete and unmanaged excavations around the world; this results mostly in the dispersion of inorganic pollutants in the environment at level surpassing the treatment capacity of conventional techniques. It is recurrent these days to find water treatment plants which no longer produce water that fits the purpose of domestic consumption based on newly established guidelines. This situation has prompted water authorities and researchers to develop tools for proper prediction and control of the dispersion of pollutants in the environment to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent the occurrence of outbreaks due to sudden load of these pollutants in the water system. The chapters in this book cover a wide range of nano and bio-based techniques that have been designed for the real time detection of emerging contaminants in environmental water sources, geochemical models that are continuously improved for the prediction of inorganic contaminants migration from the mine solid wastes into ground and surface waters. Remediation strategies are also discussed and include effective techniques based on nanotechnology, advanced membrane filtration, oxidative and bio- degradation processes using various types of nanocatalysts, biocatalysts or supporting polymer matrices which are under advanced investigations for their implementation at large scale for the removal of recalcitrant pollutants from polluted water. This book is divided is two sections, the first section covers the occurrence of emerging pollutants in environmental water while the second section covers state of the art research on the removal of emerging pollutants from water using sustainable technologies. A total of 13 chapters addressing various topics related to the two sections are essentially based on recent development in the respective field which could have a significant impact on the enhancement of the performance of wastewater treatment plants around the world and especially in developing countries where access to clean and safe water remains a daily challenge
