Problems of Nonlinear Deformation: The Continuation Method Applied to Nonlinear Problems in Solid Mechanics
Interest in nonlinear problems in mechanics has been revived and intensified by the capacity of digital computers. Consequently, a question offundamental importance is the development of solution procedures which can be applied to a large class of problems. Nonlinear problems with a parameter constitute one such class. An important aspect of these problems is, as a rule, a question of the variation of the solution when the parameter is varied. Hence, the method of continuing the solution with respect to a parameter is a natural and, to a certain degree, universal tool for analysis. This book includes details of practical problems and the results of applying this method to a certain class of nonlinear problems in the field of deformable solid mechanics. In the Introduction, two forms of the method are presented, namely continu ous continuation, based on the integration of a Cauchy problem with respect to a parameter using explicit schemes, and discrete continuation, implementing step wise processes with respect to a parameter with the iterative improvement of the solution at each step. Difficulties which arise in continuing the solution in the neighbourhood of singular points are discussed and the problem of choosing the continuation parameter is formulated.

A few years ago the Helmholtz Association (HGF) consisting of 15 research Institutions including the German Aerospace Center (DLR) started a network research program called 'Virtual Institutes'. The basic idea of this program was to establish research groups formed by Helmholtz research centers and universities to study and develop methods or technologies for future applications and educate young scientists. It should also enable and encourage the partners of this Virtual Institute after 3 years funding to continue their cooperation in other programs. Following this HGF request and chance the DLR Windtunnel Department of the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology took the initiative and established a network with other DLR institutes and German u- versities RWTH Aachen, University of Stuttgart and Technical University Munich. The main goal of this network was to share the experience in system analysis, ae- dynamics and material science for aerospace for improving the understanding and applicability of some key technologies for future reusable space transportation s- tems. Therefore, the virtual institute was named RESPACE (Key Technologies for Re- Usable Space Systems).

Cavitation in Non-Newtonian Fluids: With Biomedical and Bioengineering Applications
Non-Newtonian properties on bubble dynamics and cavitation are fundamentally different from those of Newtonian fluids. The most significant effect arises from the dramatic increase in viscosity of polymer solutions in an extensional flow, such as that generated about a spherical bubble during its growth or collapse phase. In addition, many biological fluids, such as blood, synovial fluid, and saliva, have non-Newtonian properties and can display significant viscoelastic behaviour. This monograph elucidates general aspects of bubble dynamics and cavitation in non-Newtonian fluids and applies them to the fields of biomedicine and bioengineering. In addition it presents many examples from the process industries. The field is strongly interdisciplinary and the numerous disciplines involve have and will continue to overlook and reinvent each others' work. This book helps researchers to think intuitively about the diverse physics of these systems, to attempt to bridge the various communities involved, and to convey the interest, elegance, and variety of physical phenomena that manifest themselves on the micrometer and microsecond scales.

Numerical Methods for Nonsmooth Dynamical Systems: Applications in Mechanics and Electronics
This book concerns the numerical simulation of dynamical systems whose trajec- ries may not be differentiable everywhere. They are named nonsmooth dynamical systems. They make an important class of systems, rst because of the many app- cations in which nonsmooth models are useful, secondly because they give rise to new problems in various elds of science. Usually nonsmooth dynamical systems are represented as differential inclusions, complementarity systems, evolution va- ational inequalities, each of these classes itself being split into several subclasses. The book is divided into four parts, the rst three parts being sketched in Fig. 0. 1. The aim of the rst part is to present the main tools from mechanics and applied mathematics which are necessary to understand how nonsmooth dynamical systems may be numerically simulated in a reliable way. Many examples illustrate the th- retical results, and an emphasis is put on mechanical systems, as well as on electrical circuits (the so-called Filippov's systems are also examined in some detail, due to their importance in control applications). The second and third parts are dedicated to a detailed presentation of the numerical schemes. A fourth part is devoted to the presentation of the software platform Siconos. This book is not a textbook on - merical analysis of nonsmooth systems, in the sense that despite the main results of numerical analysis (convergence, order of consistency, etc. ) being presented, their proofs are not provided.

The boundary element method (BEM), also known as the boundary integral equation method (BIEM), is a modern numerical technique which has enjoyed increasing popularity over the past two decades. It is now an established alternative to traditional computational methods of engineering analysis. The main advantage of the BEM is its unique ability to provide a complete solution in terms of boundary values only, with substantial savings in modeling effort. This book is designed to provide readers with a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the method and its application to problems in engineering and science. Each chapter provides a brief description of historical development, followed by basic theory, derivation and examples.

Introduction to Finite Element, Boundary Element, and Meshless Methods: With Applications to Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow
When students once master the concepts of the finite element method (and meshing), it's not long before they begin to look at other numerical techniques and applications, especially the boundary element and meshless methods (since a mesh is not required). The expert authors of this book provide a simple explanation of these three powerful numerical schemes and show how they all fall under the umbrella of the more universal method of weighted residuals. The book is structured in four sections. The first introductory section provides the method of weighted residuals development of finite differences, finite volume, finite element, boundary element, and meshless methods along with 1D examples of each method. The following three sections of the book present a more detailed development of the finite element method, then progress through the boundary element method, and end with meshless methods. Each section serves as a stand-alone description, but it is apparent how each conveniently leads to the other techniques. It is recommended that the reader begin with the finite element method, as this serves as the primary basis for defining the method of weighted residuals.

This book develops the basic content for an introductory course in Mechanism and Machine Theory. The text is clear and simple, supported by more than 350 figures. More than 60 solved exercises have been included to mark the translation of this book from Spanish into English. Topics treated include: dynamic analysis of machines; introduction to vibratory behavior; rotor and piston balanced; critical speed for shafts; gears and train gears; synthesis for planar mechanisms; and kinematic and dynamic analysis for robots. The chapters in relation to kinematics and dynamics for planar mechanisms can be studied with the help of WinMecc software, which allows the reader to study in an easy and intuitive way, but exhaustive at the same time. This computer program analyzes planar mechanisms of one-degree of freedom and whatever number of links. The program allows users to build a complex mechanism. They can modify any input data in real time changing values in a numeric way or using the computer mouse to manipulate links and vectors while mechanism is moving and showing the results. This powerful tool does not only show the results in a numeric way by means of tables and diagrams but also in a visual way with scalable vectors and curves.

Microfabrication in Tissue Engineering and Bioartificial Organs
The Microsystems Series has as its goal the creation of an outstanding set of textbooks, references, and monographs on subjects that span the broad field of microsystems. Exceptional PhD dissertations provide a good starting point for such a series, because, unlike monographs by more senior authors, which must compete with other professional duties for attention, the dissertation becomes the sole focus of the author until it is completed. Conversion to book form is then a streamlined process, with final editing and book production completed within a few months. Thus we are able to bring important and timely material into book form at a pace which tracks this rapidly developing field. Our first four books in the series were drawn from the more physics-oriented side of the microsystems field, including such diverse subjects as computer-aided design, atomic-force microscopy, and ultrasonic motion detection. Now, with Sangeeta Bhatia's work, we enter the realm of biology. Her use of artifically structured substrates to encourage the liver cells to form orderly assemblies is a fine example of how microfabrication technology can contribute to cell biology and medicine. I am pleased to be able to add this very new and very interesting work to the Microsystems Series. Stephen D. Senturia Cambridge MA Microfabrication in Tissue Engineering and Bioartificial Organs Foreword One of the emerging applications of microsystems technology in biology and medicine is in the field of tissue engineering and artificial organs. In order to function, cells need to receive proper signals from their environment.

Power Mechanisms of Rotational and Cyclic Motions
From the Physiology of Machines to the Anatomy of Machines An offshoot stemming from the author's previous book detailing the makeup and composition of a machine, Power Mechanisms of Rotational and Cyclic Motions provides an in-depth analysis of machine structure and operation. An important reference for practicing mechanical engineers, this book presents the kinematic diagrams of driving mechanisms in detail, analyzes their motion characteristics and efficiency, and addresses the lubricating problems that impact the reliability and operating life of machines. The diagrammatic representation of mechanisms is accompanied by examples of their general and detailed design, main geometry calculations, and recommendations for an approximate evaluation of principal dimensions. The authors consider the main stages of design, including the choice and analysis of kinematic diagrams, preliminary sizing, embodiment, and the design and dimensioning of specific elements including gears, shafts, bearings, springs, cams, fasteners, and others. A pivotal work, the book contains details of design that include: Analysis of diagrams of mechanisms (for their kinematic effects and efficiency) Rough dimensioning of the main elements Examples of the design of mechanisms and their elements (with relevant calculations of geometry and for strength) Design of specific subassemblies and parts (including their materials and heat treatment) Choice and design of lubrication systems Intended for engineering postgraduates, engineers, and designers of machines, Power Mechanisms of Rotational and Cyclic Motions also describes the main metals used in machinery and their mechanical characteristics and provides expressions for strength calculation. Covering a wide range of mechanisms, it contains numerous examples of design of mechanisms and accompanying calculations and design hints based on the authors' vast experience.

Mechanical engineering, an engineering discipline borne of the needs of the industrial revolution, is once again asked to do its substantial share in the call for industrial renewal. The general call is urgent as we face profound issues of productivity and competitiveness that require engineering solutions, among others. The Mechanical Engineering Series features graduate texts and research monographs intended to address the need for information in con temporary areas of mechanical engineering. The series is conceived as a comprehensive one that covers a broad range of concentrations important to mechanical engineering graduate education and research. We are fortunate to have a distinguished roster of consulting editors on the advisory board, each an expert in one of the areas of concen tration. The names of the consulting editors are listed on the next page of this volume. The areas of concentration are: applied mechanics; bio mechanics; computational mechanics; dynamic systems and control; energetics; mechanics of materials; processing; thermal science; and tribology. Professor Marshek, the consulting editor for dynamic systems and control, and I are pleased to present the second edition of Vibration of Discrete and Continuous Systems by Professor Shabana. We note that this is the second of two volumes. The first deals with the theory of vibration.

Turbulence Control by Passive Means: Proceedings of the 4th European Drag Reduction Meeting
In the last decades, a lot of effort has been directed towards manipulation of turbulent boundary layers by passive devices such as external manipulators (thin flat plates or aerofoil section devices embedded in the outer layer) and/or internal manipulators (small streamwise grooves acting directly on the inner region) for the purpose of reducing viscous drag. The former are commonly referred to as LEI3U s or BLADEs and the laHer riblets or grooves. Though the details of the mechanisms are not firmly understood, world-wide experimenta.! data are available and consistent enough in order to assert the potential of such devices for turbulent drag reduction. It should be noted that following on from recent and successful flight tests, the concept of using grooved surfaces is rather close to finding industrial applications. During the last few years, in Europe, there has been considerable interest in lookillg at the behaviour of such passi,'e turbulence manipulators. A lot of intense research, concerning both experimental and theoretical studies. has been carried out in some European research centres. For the last fi\'e years. informal gatherings. called ,.\ \'orking Pi\l'ty i\Ieetings , have been set up, once a year; the aim of these meetings is not only to bring together European researchers acti,'e in the field of turbulent drag reduction by passi e means and to hear about recent de\'c!opments but also to o u t1 ine sui tit ble directions for future research or collaborative programmes.

The symposiumwas motivatedby theincreasing need for modelling of material behaviourundervarious mechan icalconditions. This need is driven by the evolut ion ofcomputer capac ityand the resulting ability for engineers and scien tiststo address complexproblems . Reliable models formaterialbehaviour, including accurate numericalvalues of parameters ,are necessary for a continued beneficial development ofthe computational side of solid mechanics .High rate plasticity ,thermally assisted creep and phasetransformationsare only a fewexamplesof areas where more accurate modelsare needed. Experiments are necessary for the establishment ofmodels and parameters , and modified versionsof conventional test methods can make important contributions . Also modern optical methodsoffer a highpotentialfor futureexperimental development. Numerical simulations ofexperiments and so-called inverse modelling arealso frequentlyused techniques. The aim of the symposium was to bring together researchers with an interest in the areaofexperimental and computational aspects ofmaterial modelling for exchange and discussionofpromising methodsandresults. Abisko,a national park in the Swedish mountain district about 200 km north of the arctic circle and about one hourve dri from the airport ofKiruna, was chosen for the symposium. The tourist hotel in the park , overlookinga beautiful lake , offered a suitablevenue for the symposium. This environment with tracks for short walks (and long hikes),goals for small excursions and a hotel with restaurant and bar ve the ga delegatesmany opportunitiesto meet , socialiseand discuss during breaks and evenings.

Recent Advances in Robot Kinematics
The articles of this book were reported and discussed at the fifth international symposium on Advances in Robot Kinematics. As is known, the first symposium of this series was organised in 1988 in Ljubljana. The following meetings took place every other year in Austria, Italy, and Slovenia (Linz, Ferrara, Ljubljana, Portoroz Bernardin). It must be emphasised that the symposia run under the patronage of the International Federation for the Theory of Machinesand Mechanisms, IFToMM. In this period, Advances in Robot Kinematics has been able to attract the most outstanding authors in the area and also to create an optimum combination of a scientific pragmatism and a friendly atmosphere. Hence, it has managed to survive in a strong competition of many international conferences and meetings. In the most ancient way, robot kinematics is regarded as an application of the kinematics of rigid hodies. However, there are topics and problems that are typical for robot kinematics that cannot easily be found in any other scientific field. It is our belief that the initiative of Advances in Robot Kinematics has contributed to develop a remarkable scientific community. The present book is of interest to researchers, doctoral students and teachers, engineers and mathematicians specialising in kinematics of robots and mechanisms, mathematical modelling, simulation, design, and control of robots.
