Model-Reference Adaptive Control: A Primer: 2018
This textbook provides readers with a good working knowledge of adaptive control theory through applications. It is intended for students beginning masters or doctoral courses, and control practitioners wishing to get up to speed in the subject expeditiously. Readers are taught a wide variety of adaptive control techniques starting with simple methods and extending step-by-step to more complex ones. Stability proofs are provided for all adaptive control techniques without obfuscating reader understanding with excessive mathematics. The book begins with standard model-reference adaptive control (MRAC) for first-order, second-order, and multi-input, multi-output systems. Treatment of least-squares parameter estimation and its extension to MRAC follow, helping readers to gain a different perspective on MRAC. Function approximation with orthogonal polynomials and neural networks, and MRAC using neural networks are also covered. Robustness issues connected with MRAC are discussed, helping the student to appreciate potential pitfalls of the technique. This appreciation is encouraged by drawing parallels between various aspects of robustness and linear time-invariant systems wherever relevant. Following on from the robustness problems is material covering robust adaptive control including standard methods and detailed exposition of recent advances, in particular, the author's work on optimal control modification. Interesting properties of the new method are illustrated in the design of adaptive systems to meet stability margins. This method has been successfully flight-tested on research aircraft, one of various flight-control applications detailed towards the end of the book along with a hybrid adaptive flight control architecture that combines direct MRAC with least-squares indirect adaptive control. In addition to the applications, understanding is encouraged by the use of end-of-chapter exercises and associated MATLAB(R) files; an electronic solutions manual for instructors can be downloaded from http://extras.springer.com. Readers will need no more than the standard mathematics for basic control theory such as differential equations and matrix algebra; the book covers the foundations of MRAC and the necessary mathematical preliminaries.

Robot Manipulator Redundancy Resolution
In recent times, robotics has attracted considerable attention in scientific researches and engineering applications. Much effort has been contributed to robotics and different types of robots have thus been developed and investigated. Among these robots, redundant robot manipulators have played an important role in numerous fields of engineering applications in industrial automation for performing repetitive dull work, such as welding, painting and assembly. For a redundant robot manipulator, it possesses more degrees-of-freedom (DOF) than the minimum number of DOF required to perform a given end-effector primary task. Being one important issue in operating such robotic systems, the redundancy resolution has been widely studied, which is related to the motion planning and control of redundant manipulators. The book presents and investigates different methods and schemes for the motion planning and control of redundant robot manipulators. The text mentions some fundamental techniques for such unification and then specifies it in detail based on quadratic programming (QP) and its online solutions. Such a QP formulation is general as it incorporates equality, inequality and bound constraints, simultaneously. This QP formulation covers the online avoidance of joint physical limits and environmental obstacles, as well as the optimization of various performance indices. Every term is endowed with clear physical meaning and utility. Computer-simulation results based on various robotic models demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented methods and schemes. For substantiating the physical realizability, some of these methods and schemes are applied to an actual six-DOF planar robot manipulator. The book is a self-contained, detailed, updated, clear and coherent account on the subject.

Investigation of Spatial Control Strategies with Application to Advanced Heavy Water Reactor: 2018
This book examines the different spatial control techniques for regulation of spatial power distribution in advanced heavy water reactors (AHWR). It begins with a review of the literature pertinent to the modeling and control of large reactors. It also offers a nodal-core model based on finite difference approximation since the AHWR core is considered to be divided into 17 relatively large nodes. Further, it introduces a nonlinear model characterizing important thermal hydraulics parameters of AHWR and integrates it into the neutronics model to obtain a coupled neutronics-thermal hydraulics model of AHWR. The book also presents a vectorized nonlinear model of AHWR and implements it in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The model of the reactor is then linearized at the rated power and put into standard state variable form. It is characterized by 90 states, 5 inputs and 18 outputs. Lastly, it discusses control techniques for a nonlinear model of AHWR. This book will prove to be a valuable resource for professional engineers and implementation specialists, researchers and students.

This book presents the entire body of thought of Norbert Wiener (1894-1964), knowledge of which is essential if one wishes to understand and correctly interpret the age in which we live. The focus is in particular on the philosophical and sociological aspects of Wiener's thought, but these aspects are carefully framed within the context of his scientific journey. Important biographical events, including some that were previously unknown, are also highlighted, but while the book has a biographical structure, it is not only a biography. The book is divided into four chronological sections, the first two of which explore Wiener's development as a philosopher and logician and his brilliant interwar career as a mathematician, supported by his philosophical background. The third section considers his research during World War II, which drew upon his previous scientific work and reflections and led to the birth of cybernetics. Finally, the radical post-war shift in Wiener's intellectual path is considered, examining how he came to abandon computer science projects and commenced ceaseless public reflections on the new sciences and technologies of information, their social effects, and the need for responsibility in science.
