Concurrency Control in Distributed System Using Mutual Exclusion
The book presents various state-of-the-art approaches for process synchronization in a distributed environment. The range of algorithms discussed in the book starts from token based mutual exclusion algorithms that work on tree based topology. Then there are interesting solutions for more flexible logical topology like a directed graph, with or without cycle. In a completely different approach, one of the chapters presents two recent voting-based DME algorithms. All DME algorithms presented in the book aim to ensure fairness in terms of first come first serve (FCFS) order among equal priority processes. At the same time, the solutions consider the priority of the requesting processes and allocate resource for the earliest request when no such request from a higher priority process is pending.

Fractional-order Modeling of Nuclear Reactor: From Subdiffusive Neutron Transport to Control-oriented Models: A Systematic Approach
This book addresses the topic of fractional-order modeling of nuclear reactors. Approaching neutron transport in the reactor core as anomalous diffusion, specifically subdiffusion, it starts with the development of fractional-order neutron telegraph equations. Using a systematic approach, the book then examines the development and analysis of various fractional-order models representing nuclear reactor dynamics, ultimately leading to the fractional-order linear and nonlinear control-oriented models. The book utilizes the mathematical tool of fractional calculus, the calculus of derivatives and integrals with arbitrary non-integer orders (real or complex), which has recently been found to provide a more compact and realistic representation to the dynamics of diverse physical systems. Including extensive simulation results and discussing important issues related to the fractional-order modeling of nuclear reactors, the book offers a valuable resource for students and researchers working in the areas of fractional-order modeling and control and nuclear reactor modeling.

Modeling, Simulation, and Control of a Medium-Scale Power System
This book highlights the most important aspects of mathematical modeling, computer simulation, and control of medium-scale power systems. It discusses a number of practical examples based on Sri Lanka's power system, one characterized by comparatively high degrees of variability and uncertainty. Recently introduced concepts such as controlled disintegration to maintain grid stability are discussed and studied using simulations of practical scenarios. Power systems are complex, geographically distributed, dynamical systems with numerous interconnections between neighboring systems. Further, they often comprise a generation mix that includes hydro, thermal, combined cycle, and intermittent renewable plants, as well as considerably extended transmission lines. Hence, the detailed analysis of their transient behaviors in the presence of disturbances is both highly theory-intensive and challenging in practice. Effectively regulating and controlling power system behavior to ensure consistent service quality and transient stability requires the use of various schemes and systems. The book's initial chapters detail the fundamentals of power systems; in turn, system modeling and simulation results using Power Systems Computer Aided Design/Electromagnetic Transients including DC (PSCAD/EMTDC) software are presented and compared with available real-world data. Lastly, the book uses computer simulation studies under a variety of practical contingency scenarios to compare several under-frequency load-shedding schemes. Given the breadth and depth of its coverage, it offers a truly unique resource on the management of medium-scale power systems.

3D Motion of Rigid Bodies: A Foundation for Robot Dynamics Analysis
This book offers an excellent complementary text for an advanced course on the modelling and dynamic analysis of multi-body mechanical systems, and provides readers an in-depth understanding of the modelling and control of robots. While the Lagrangian formulation is well suited to multi-body systems, its physical meaning becomes paradoxically complicated for single rigid bodies. Yet the most advanced numerical methods rely on the physics of these single rigid bodies, whose dynamic is then given among multiple formulations by the set of the Newton-Euler equations in any of their multiple expression forms. This book presents a range of simple tools to express in succinct form the dynamic equation for the motion of a single rigid body, either free motion (6-dimension), such as that of any free space navigation robot or constrained motion (less than 6-dimension), such as that of ground or surface vehicles. In the process, the book also explains the equivalences of (and differences between) the different formulations.

Artificial Cognitive Architecture with Self-Learning and Self-Optimization Capabilities: Case Studies in Micromachining Processes
This book introduces three key issues: (i) development of a gradient-free method to enable multi-objective self-optimization; (ii) development of a reinforcement learning strategy to carry out self-learning and finally, (iii) experimental evaluation and validation in two micromachining processes (i.e., micro-milling and micro-drilling). The computational architecture (modular, network and reconfigurable for real-time monitoring and control) takes into account the analysis of different types of sensors, processing strategies and methodologies for extracting behavior patterns from representative process' signals. The reconfiguration capability and portability of this architecture are supported by two major levels: the cognitive level (core) and the executive level (direct data exchange with the process). At the same time, the architecture includes different operating modes that interact with the process to be monitored and/or controlled. The cognitive level includes three fundamental modes such as modeling, optimization and learning, which are necessary for decision-making (in the form of control signals) and for the real-time experimental characterization of complex processes. In the specific case of the micromachining processes, a series of models based on linear regression, nonlinear regression and artificial intelligence techniques were obtained. On the other hand, the executive level has a constant interaction with the process to be monitored and/or controlled. This level receives the configuration and parameterization from the cognitive level to perform the desired monitoring and control tasks.

Advanced Control and Optimization Paradigms for Wind Energy Systems
This book presents advanced studies on the conversion efficiency, mechanical reliability, and the quality of power related to wind energy systems. The main concern regarding such systems is reconciling the highly intermittent nature of the primary source (wind speed) with the demand for high-quality electrical energy and system stability. This means that wind energy conversion within the standard parameters imposed by the energy market and power industry is unachievable without optimization and control. The book discusses the rapid growth of control and optimization paradigms and applies them to wind energy systems: new controllers, new computational approaches, new applications, new algorithms, and new obstacles.

Opinion Dynamics and the Evolution of Social Power in Social Networks
This book uses rigorous mathematical analysis to advance opinion dynamics models for social networks in three major directions. First, a novel model is proposed to capture how a discrepancy between an individual's private and expressed opinions can develop due to social pressures that arise in group situations or through extremists deliberately shaping public opinion. Detailed theoretical analysis of the final opinion distribution is followed by use of the model to study Asch's seminal experiments on conformity, and the phenomenon of pluralistic ignorance. Second, the DeGroot-Friedkin model for evolution of an individual's social power (self-confidence) is developed in a number of directions. The key result establishes that an individual's initial social power is forgotten exponentially fast, even when the network changes over time; eventually, an individual's social power depends only on the (changing) network structure. Last, a model for the simultaneous discussion of multiple logically interdependent topics is proposed. To ensure that a consensus across the opinions of all individuals is achieved, it turns out that the interpersonal interactions must be weaker than an individual's introspective cognitive process for establishing logical consistency among the topics. Otherwise, the individual may experience cognitive overload and the opinion system becomes unstable. Conclusions of interest to control engineers, social scientists, and researchers from other relevant disciplines are discussed throughout the thesis with support from both social science and control literature.

Self-Learning Optimal Control of Nonlinear Systems: Adaptive Dynamic Programming Approach
This book presents a class of novel, self-learning, optimal control schemes based on adaptive dynamic programming techniques, which quantitatively obtain the optimal control schemes of the systems. It analyzes the properties identified by the programming methods, including the convergence of the iterative value functions and the stability of the system under iterative control laws, helping to guarantee the effectiveness of the methods developed. When the system model is known, self-learning optimal control is designed on the basis of the system model; when the system model is not known, adaptive dynamic programming is implemented according to the system data, effectively making the performance of the system converge to the optimum. With various real-world examples to complement and substantiate the mathematical analysis, the book is a valuable guide for engineers, researchers, and students in control science and engineering.

The involved set functions are much weaker forms of the Lebesgue measure and they were conceived to fulfill the needs of economic theory and other applied sciences. The approaches presented here are original, and all chapters are self-contained and can be read independently. Moreover, the book's findings are sure to find application in many areas of pure and applied mathematics, especially in approximation theory, numerical analysis and mathematical economics (both ordinary and fractional). Accordingly, it offers a unique resource for researchers, graduate students, and for coursework in the above-mentioned fields, and belongs in all science and engineering libraries.

Optimal Impulsive Control: The Extension Approach
Optimal Impulsive Control explores the class of impulsive dynamic optimization problems-problems that stem from the fact that many conventional optimal control problems do not have a solution in the classical setting-which is highly relevant with regard to engineering applications. The absence of a classical solution naturally invokes the so-called extension, or relaxation, of a problem, and leads to the notion of generalized solution which encompasses the notions of generalized control and trajectory; in this book several extensions of optimal control problems are considered within the framework of optimal impulsive control theory. In this framework, the feasible arcs are permitted to have jumps, while the conventional absolutely continuous trajectories may fail to exist. The authors draw together various types of their own results, centered on the necessary conditions of optimality in the form of Pontryagin's maximum principle and the existence theorems, which shape a substantial body of optimal impulsive control theory. At the same time, they present optimal impulsive control theory in a unified framework, introducing the different paradigmatic problems in increasing order of complexity. The rationale underlying the book involves addressing extensions increasing in complexity from the simplest case provided by linear control systems and ending with the most general case of a totally nonlinear differential control system with state constraints. The mathematical models presented in Optimal Impulsive Control being encountered in various engineering applications, this book will be of interest to both academic researchers and practising engineers.
