Professional Advances in Sports Coaching: Research and Practice
Despite the rapid advance of the academic study of coaching science, there is a dearth of evidence on contemporary progressions within the coaching profession itself, particularly around the wide-ranging challenges that coaches face. Professional Advances in Sports Coaching constitutes an essential collection of the most innovative, up-to-date reviews and research on professional issues in sports coaching and coaching psychology. Seeking to assess and challenge contemporary conceptual and theoretical research around the evolving nature of the coach's role, issues associated with athlete and coach welfare, and societal demands of the coach, the book covers topics as diverse as: gender and spirituality within sports coaching; working in culturally diverse environments and disability sport; understanding hazing, mental health issues, and disordered eating in athletes; moral behaviour and safeguarding; high performance coaching and talent development; communicating with athletes in the age of social media, and managing cliques. Written by leading experts from around the world, every chapter clarifies and defines key concepts, gives an up-to-date and comprehensive review of literature within the area, and examines the implications for future research and applied practice. This is a critical resource for any upper-level student enrolled in sports coaching science or practice classes, sports coaching academics with an interest in professional practice, and practicing sports coaches.

Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health
Physical activity is vital for good health. It has an established strong evidence base for its positive effects on functional capacity, reducing the risk of many chronic diseases, and promoting physical, mental and social well-being. Furthermore, these benefits are evident across a diversity of ages, groups and populations. The need for these benefits in current societies means that exercise practitioners, professional bodies, institutions, health authorities and governments require high quality evidence to establish appropriate exercise guidelines, implementation strategies and effective exercise prescription at individual, group and population levels. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health is the first book to comprehensively present the issues associated with physical activity and health research and outline methods available along with considerations of the issues associated with these methods and working with particular groups. The book outlines the historical and scientific context of physical activity and health research before working through the full research process, from generating literature reviews and devising a research proposal, through selecting a research methodology and quantifying physical activity and outcome measures, to disseminating findings. Including a full section on conducting research studies with special populations, the book includes chapters on: Observational and cross-sectional studies; Interviews, questionnaires and focus groups; Qualitative and quantitative research methods; Epidemiological research methods; Physical activity interventions and sedentary behaviour; and Working with children, older people, indigenous groups, LGBTI groups, and those with physical and mental health issues. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health is the only book to approach the full range of physical activity research methods from a health perspective. It is essential reading for any undergraduate student conducting a research project or taking applied research modules in physical activity and health, graduate students of epidemiology, public health, exercise psychology or exercise physiology with a physical activity and health focus, or practicing researchers in the area.

The Modern Kiteflier: Voices of Those Pulling the Strings
Over the past generation, kiteflying has evolved past a springtime childhood rite of passage into a popular mainstream adult activity. The kite's popularity skyrocketed at a time when a new breed of groundbreaking sport kites appeared and kite makers adopted modern synthetic materials developed for other industries. The result was an explosion of kite experimentation and its effects are far-reaching. Kite artists emerged and dazzled onlookers with three-dimensional aerial sculptures. Enthusiasts formed local, national, and international clubs to celebrate kiteflying and schedule festivals for hundreds of thousand pleasure seekers. Inventors perfected new kites and kite accessories, and savvy entrepreneurs tapped budding markets to create multimillion-dollar kiting industries. Yet, despite the revival, the profile of the kiteflier remains anonymous. In the mid-1990s, the World Kite Museum launched a campaign to put a name to each face and began collecting personal stories from influential kitefliers. Drawing from the museum's audio archive, The Modern Kiteflier brings together firsthand memories from the fun-loving people who pursued their curiosities and built a community. Stitching together slices of grassroots history, The Modern Kiteflier is the first book to tell the story of contemporary kiteflying and the people who pull the strings in kiting.

The Grandmaster: Magnus Carlsen and the Match That Made Chess Great Again
A firsthand account of the dramatic 2016 World Chess Championship between Norway's Magnus Carlsen and Russia's Sergey Karjakin, which mirrored the world's geopolitical unrest and rekindled a global fascination with the sport. The first week of November 2016, as a crowd of people swarmed outside of Manhattan's Trump Tower to rail against the election of Donald Trump, hundreds more descended on the city's South Street Seaport. But they weren't there to protest. They were there to watch the World Chess Championship between Norway's Magnus Carlsen and Russia's Sergey Karjakin--what by the time it was over would be front-page news and thought by many the greatest finish in chess history. The story lines were riveting. The championship hadn't been hosted in New York City, the de facto world capital of the sport, in more than two decades. With both Carlsen and Karjakin just 25 years old, the tournament organizers were billing it as a battle of the millennials--the first time the championship had been waged among the generation that grew up playing chess primarily against computers. And perhaps most intriguing were all the geopolitical connections to the match. Originally from Crimea, Karjakin had recently repatriated to Russia under the direct assistance of Putin. Carlsen, meanwhile, had expressed admiration for Donald Trump, and his first move of the tournament he played with a smirk what's called a Trompowsky Attack. Then there was the Russian leader of the World Chess Federation being barred from attending due to US sanctions, and chess fanatic and Trump adviser Peter Thiel being called on to make the honorary first move in sudden death. That the tournament required sudden death was a shock. Oddsmakers had given Carlsen, the defending champion, an 80% chance of winning. It would take everything he had to retain his title. In doing so, he would firmly make his case to be considered the greatest player chess has ever seen. Author Brin-Jonathan Butler was granted unique access to the two-and-half-week tournament and watched every move. In The Grandmaster, he aims to do for Magnus Carlsen what Norman Mailer did for Muhammed Ali in The Fight, John McPhee did for Arthur Ashe in Levels of the Game, and David Foster Wallace did for Roger Federer in his famous New York Times Magazine profile. Butler captures one of the world's greatest sportsmen at the height of their powers, and attempts to decipher the secret to that greatness.

Beautiful Moves: Designing Stadia
Eduardo Galeano, Uruguayan writer, once pleaded for `a pretty move for the love of God' when watching his beloved soccer. This book is likewise interested in `beautiful moves', but turns instead to the architecture of the stadium as an architectural type as captivating as the play occurring on the pitch. In the past 30 years a number of stadium projects have been completed that highlight how this building type has become a site for architectural innovation and complexity. Clients that once would once have turned to large firms specializing in stadia instead began to hire A-list and Pritzker-Prize-winning architects to design new stadia. As a result, in cities around the world stadia are often the most expensive and monumental of projects, and may be icons of identity and defining presences in the built landscape. By examining a range of exemplary stadia from around the world (built, unbuilt and demolished projects), this book presents for the first time a canon for this building type. Organized chronologically, it includes famous examples from the likes of Lina Bo Bardi, Frei Otto, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Herzog & de Meuron, Foster + Partners and Studio Gang.

Under an Orange Sky: The Story of the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup
The wildly dramatic story of the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup London 2018 - the biggest women's team sport event ever to take place on British soil. Under an Orange Sky was written and photographed by the team that brought you The History Makers: How Team GB Stormed to a First Ever Gold in Women's Hockey, winner of the Thompson Reuters Illustrated Sports Book of the Year 2018. At this crazy, anything-goes, ultimately tear-inducing competition there was no such thing as a certainty. High-ranked teams fell by the wayside, reputations were ignored and accepted practices turned on their heads as the form book was torn up in front of the huge crowds that flocked daily to the Lee Valley. Working together with world-class hockey photographers Frank Uijlenbroek and Koen Suyk - joined this time by Argentina's Rodrigo Jaramillo - authors Sarah Juggins and Richard Stainthorpe captured all the twists, shocks and surprises, and even a fabulous Irish fairy-tale, as east London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park welcomed the world's best.

Computational Intelligence in Sports
This book presents recent research on computational intelligence (CI) algorithms in the field of sport. In the modern age, information technologies have greatly reduced the need for human effort in the carrying out of many daily tasks. These technologies have radically influenced the lives of humans, and the information society in general. Unfortunately, these advances have brought with them certain negative effects, including the encouragement of sedentary lifestyles and the attendant health problems such as obesity that these engender. Other modern maladies, chiefly cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, have also been on the increase. Today, sports are virtually the only activity that still connects modern humans to their original lifestyle, which was based on physical motion. This book tears familiarizing sports scientists with the foundations of computational intelligence, while at the same time presenting the problems that have arisen in the training domain to computer scientists. Lastly, the book proposes the use of an Artificial Sports Trainer designed to enhance the training of modern athletes who cannot afford the considerable expense of hiring a human personal trainer. This intelligent system can monitor performance and design and direct appropriate future training, thus promoting both healthy lifestyles and competitive success in athletes.

Soccer and the American Dream
The American Dream is founded upon the ideological belief that `you can be anything you want to be', regardless of your current class position, and is one of the most emotive, pervasive and ideologically embedded concepts championed by American citizens. Providing contemporary insight into the American Dream via the critical lens of soccer - the world's pre-eminent sport but still a minority interest in the US - this book challenges the notion that America is different, exceptional or unique in the global order, either in real socio-economic-political terms or in perceived cultural terms. Soccer and the American Dream offers an overview of soccer in the US and uses case studies to explore the motives of American university students in undertaking a soccer scholarship, considering the impact of family, social class and career development upon social mobility and upon the game itself. Providing a fascinating new insight into the nexus of sport, education, culture and society, this is a topical resource for students, scholars and practitioners across the fields of soccer, higher education, youth sport, sports development, sports coaching and sport management.

The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching: Implications and Applications in Sport Performance and Health
Stretching is a fundamentally important part of sport and exercise, playing a role in improving performance, and preventing injury and rehabilitation, but its scientific underpinnings have, to this point, been overlooked in book publishing. The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book to cover the underlying physiology and psychology of stretching, critically assessing why, when, and how we should stretch, as well as offering a highly illustrated, practical guide to stretching exercises. Placing stretching in the context of both health and performance, the first section of the book sets out the science behind stretching, critically assessing the benefits, disadvantages, and roles of different types of stretching, exploring the mechanisms behind increasing range-of-movement through stretching and other methods, and offering evidence-based guidance on building stretching into warm-ups. In its second section, the book provides a step-by-step guide to static, dynamic, and PRF stretching exercises for beginners, through recreational athletes, to elite performers. Richly illustrated, and including an online resource, The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching provides an important scientific enquiry into stretching, and an invaluable reference for any strength and conditioning coach or student, personal trainer, sports coach, or exercise scientist.

Meaning and Spirituality in Sport and Exercise: Psychological Perspectives
Despite the growing literature on spirituality and its positive impact on well-being in health psychology, education, occupational psychology and leisure studies, it has been less examined in sport studies. Meaning and Spirituality in Sport and Exercise: Psychological Perspectives examines the many forms of spirituality in sport from a psychological perspective, from moments of transcendence and finding deeper meaning and value to prayer before an important competition or in adversity, such as a career-threatening injury. Based on the latest research and the Nesti's experience in applied sport psychology service delivery, this book covers a range of novel topics linking spirituality to athlete development, injury, exercise motivation, and ageing athletes, and offers applied, practical guidance for sport psychologists working with spiritual athletes. Offering a unique contribution to the study of spirituality in sport, and to sport psychology practice, this book is vital reading for any upper-level student or academic working in sport and exercise psychology, religion and sport, or the philosophy of sport, and any practising sport psychologist.

Most of us face a couple of obstacles when it comes to living our Walter Mitty-esque adventure dreams: ideas of what to do, and concrete knowledge of how long those ideas will take. It's a long way from talking to some guy at the bar about his Grand Canyon Raft trip to going home and Googling a synopsis of how to make it happen, and then clicking around a guide company's website to find out if it takes three days or 30. But it won't be hard to flip through this book and get inspired.

The Incomplete Book of Running
Sagal has created a new genre-the five-minute-mile memoir. Combining commentary and reflection about running with a deeply felt personal story, this book is winning, smart, honest, and affecting. Whether you are a runner or not, it will move you. -Susan Orlean In the midpoint of life, I found myself lost, in a dark place. So I tried to figure out exactly how many miles I had run to get there... So begins The Incomplete Book of Running, a funny, wise, and powerful meditation about running and life from Peter Sagal, longtime columnist for Runner's World and the host of NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, that shares stories, advice, and warnings he's learned over his long and checkered career on the pavement. Just before turning forty, Sagal-brainiac Harvard grad, short bald Jew with a disposition toward heft, and sedentary star of public radio who had exercised sporadically as a teenager-started running seriously. A decade later, what began as a simple mission to keep himself healthy had evolved into fourteen marathon finishes-including one in Boston in 2013, where he crossed the line only moments before two bombs went off-and tens of thousands of miles on roads, sidewalks, paths, and trails all over the United States and the world. Running was an important part of his life, but it wasn't until he experienced a personal crisis that he realized it had become a mode of survival. In these pages, Sagal writes with humor and insight about the moments that have changed the way he sees the relationship between life and sport-from running a charity race in his underwear (in St. Louis, in February) and attempting to quiet his colon while taking a lap in his neighborhood to volunteering as a guide for visually impaired runners, causing a scandal by sneaking onto a course midrace, and making his triumphant post-bombing return to Boston in 2014. He also dives deep into the emotional experience of running, body image, the similarities between endurance sports and sadomasochism, the legacy of the sport as passed down from parent and child, and the odd but extraordinary bonds created among strangers and friends sharing the road. As time goes on and his mileage increases, he realizes that the only way to overcome obstacles is simply to keep running through them. Candid, clear-eyed, and frequently hilarious, The Incomplete Book of Running is about more than just a man and a sport. It is a field guide to life, a collection of lessons centered around all those things that keep us moving forward: hope, persistence, practice, and love.

At All Costs
At All Costs gets inside the mind of one of GAA's most talked-about personalities. Possessed of an unshakeable work ethic and determination to succeed, all-Ireland winning hurler and manager Davy Fitzgerald has established a reputation as one of the finest hurling talents of his generation. For Davy, however, a man every bit the perfectionist, victory has always come at a cost. His list of playing and managerial honours is matched by a roll call of controversies and arguments. In this raw and surprisingly vulnerable account of his life in hurling, Fitzgerald confronts his legacy, his fiery reputation and the most enduring controversies of his career, all the while considering the cost pursuit of victory has taken on himself and those closest to him. Candid and self-aware, it is sure to be one the most talked-about books this year.

Sport's Relationship with Other Leisure Industries: Historical Perspectives
This innovative and timely volume of essays critically interrogates the shared histories between sport and a variety of leisure, entertainment and cultural pursuits. Sport's Relationship with Other Leisure Industries: Historical perspectives spans the bowling greens of early modern England to the postmodern exhibition halls of contemporary Las Vegas, and considers examples from Europe, North America and India. Utilizing a range of historical methods and sources, they describe how sport has interacted with a broad range of leisure forms, including tourism, shopping, theatre, circus, carnival and film. The collection takes into account the economic, cultural, geographic and political interactions sport has forged and poses a series of questions: about how sport has been forged in contemporary consumer capitalism; about the manner in which it has been shaped by space and place; and the ways in which entrepreneurs, sportspeople and artists have represented sporting competition. The collection will help both students and scholars conceptualise sporting networks, and will be of interest to those working in multiple fields. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in History.
