AFC Bournemouth: The Fall and Rise is the ultimate rags-to-riches football story, exploring how a small lower-league club on the south coast fought back against all the odds to reach the riches of the English Premier League. With fascinating insights from renowned manager Eddie Howe and all the key players, the book reflects on the club's day of destiny against Bolton Wanderers in April 2015, when Premier League promotion was secured just six years after the club almost went out of existence. Former captain Tommy Elphick candidly reveals how Howe plotted the Cherries' route out of the Championship, while club legend Steve Fletcher tells the emotionally charged story of his return - and the goal in 2009 that halted the club's slide into non-league. Howe, meanwhile, provides amazing detail into how he took a club on the brink to the top of the beautiful game.

Sean Cavanagh: The Obsession: My Autobiography
SEAN CAVANAGH is one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of all time. A threetime All-Ireland winner and five-time All Star, Cavanagh was crowned Footballer of the Year in 2008 and captained Ireland in the International Rules series. He holds the record for the highest number of appearances (89) for an outfield intercounty footballer and was a permanent fixture in the Tyrone team after his debut in 2002. Early in 2018 he ended his glorious career with an unexpected All-Ireland Intermediate Championship title with his club, Moy. But those successes are only part of Sean Cavanagh's story. Cavanagh's youth played out amid the Troubles in Northern Ireland. He moved homes and clubs when he was ten, leaving Coalisland for Moy on the Armagh border and tells of the challenges he faced at that time - including being constantly spat on during one Ulster Championship game, having his teeth knocked out in another and his ongoing obsession to beat the arthritis that threatened his career. Along with the successes and victories throughout an incredible career, the massive strain that losing big games placed on him is laid bare. Like the dark night in 2016 when he spent hours alone just walking in his Tyrone strip for mile after mile, after losing to Mayo nearly tipped him over the edge. The time in 2009 when it was widely reported that Cavanagh's `roof caved in' before the All Ireland semi-final against Cork - now addressed here by Sean. And, for the first time, Sean reveals the full story of his controversial relationship with manager Mickey Harte, their bond over a 16-year period and the truth behind the rumours of serious rifts. Cavanagh also tells of scurrilous gossip surrounding his private life and how news journalists hounded his family during this time. He gives his view on Tyrone's RTE boycott and addresses the vicious tirade against him by TV pundit Joe Brolly that made headlines. On his road to greatness, Cavanagh also turned down a professional AFL career. This exhilarating book now reveals the enormous lengths he went to to ensure a lasting legacy at home in Ireland and the lifetime obsessions that have made Sean Cavanagh a legend of the game and the man he is today.

England: The Biography: The Story of English Cricket
'An astonishing work of research, detail and revelation. Bulging with information, packed with nuggets.' John Etheridge, Sun 'Another wonderful sports book...simply a treat.' Jim Holden, Sunday Express England: The Biography is the most comprehensive account of the England cricket team that has ever been published, taking the reader into the heart of the action and the team dynamics that have helped shape their success, or otherwise. It is now 140 years since England first played Test match cricket and, for much of that time, it has struggled to perform to the best of its capabilities. In the early years, amateurs would pick and choose which matches and tours they would play; subsequently, the demands of the county game - and the petty jealousies that created - would prevent many from achieving their best. It was only in the 1990s that central contracts were brought in, and Team England began to receive the best possible support from an ever-increasing backroom team. But cricket isn't just about structures, it depends like no other sport on questions of how successful the captain is in motivating and leading his team, and how well different personalities and egos are integrated and managed in the changing room. From Joe Root and Alastair Cook back to Mike Atherton, Mike Brearley and Ray Illingworth, England captains have had a heavy influence on proceedings. Recent debates over Kevin Pietersen were nothing new, as contemporaries of W.G.Grace would doubtless recognise. As England play their 1000th Test, this is a brilliant and unmissable insight into the ups and downs of that story.

Breathing on the Roof of the World: Memoir of a Respiratory Physiologist
This book is an informal autobiography by John West MD PhD. He obtained his medical degree in Adelaide, Australia and then spent 15 years mainly at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital in London where he, with others, used radioactive oxygen-15 to make the first description of the uneven regional distribution of blood flow in the lung. In 1960-1961, he was a member of the Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition led by Sir Edmund Hillary who had made the first ascent of Mt Everest 7 years before. During the expedition about 6 scientists spent up to three months at an altitude of 5800 m studying the effects of this very high altitude on human physiology. Because of his interests in the effects of gravity on the lung, Dr. West spent a year at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California in 1967-1968. While there he submitted a proposal to NASA to measure pulmonary function of astronauts in space, and this was funded. Later, in 1981 he organized the American Medical Research Expedition to Everest during which the first measurements of human physiology on the summit, altitude 8848 m, were obtained. In the 1990's, Dr. West's team made the first comprehensive measurements of pulmonary function of astronauts in space using SpaceLab which was taken up in the Shuttle.

Walter Camp and the Creation of American Football
Walter Camp made the development of football--indeed, its very creation--his lifelong mission. From his days as a college athlete, Camp's love of the game and dedication to its future put it on the course that would allow it to seize the passions of the nation. Roger R. Tamte tells the engrossing but forgotten life story of Walter Camp, the man contemporaries called the father of American football. He charts Camp's leadership as American players moved away from rugby and for the first time tells the story behind the remarkably inventive rule change that, in Camp's own words, was more important than all the rest of the legislation combined. Trials also emerged, as when disputes over forward passing, the ten-yard first down, and other rules became so public that President Theodore Roosevelt took sides. The resulting political process produced losses for Camp as well as successes, but soon a consensus grew that football needed no new major changes. American football was on its way, but as time passed, Camp's name and defining influence became lost to history. Entertaining and exhaustively researched, Walter Camp and the Creation of American Football weaves the life story of an important sports pioneer with a long-overdue history of the dramatic events that produced the nation's most popular game.

The Growth and Development of Sport in County Tipperary, 1840-1880
The growth and development of sport in Co. Tipperary, 1840 to 1880, was promoted and supported by the landed elite and military officer classes. The growth and development of sport in Co. Tipperary, 1840 to 1880, was promoted and supported by the landed elite and military officer classes. In the instances of cricket, rugby union and association football, the military were the principle agency through which these sports were spread and made known among the people in the county. Sporting trends which were fashionable in Great Britain also became evident in Ireland, and by extension, Tipperary. The degree to which horse racing and hunting to hounds became an integral aspect of the social lives of the elite class is reflected countywide. The associational culture among this class became evident in summer time recreations most notably archery, lawn tennis and cricket. Cricket was the one sport which was quickly diffused throughout the sporting community of Tipperary as it became, in the 1870s, the most prolific team sport in the county and played by all classes. Sport took place without borders and to this end patronage was a key element of this support. There were some notable supporters who gave of their time and money to ensure that the best resources were in place to bring this about.

Butch Wilkins and the Sundance Kid: A Teenage Obsession with TV Sport
Butch Wilkins and the Sundance Kid chronicles the author's decade-long obsession with televised sport during his teenage years in the 1980s. Charting similar waters to Nick Hornby's classic Fever Pitch, but with the hopeless devotion of a teenager faithfully following his team around the country replaced by the hopeless devotion of a teenager faithfully following sport (any sport) around the TV schedules. It is memoir intertwined with nostalgia, ruminations on the changing face of sport during this time, portraits of its heroes and villains, and reflections on teenagehood and impending adulthood. Sweet, wise and witty, Butch Wilkins and the Sundance Kid is a hymn to televised sport in the 1980s - as well as to the decade itself - combining humour, insight and poignancy to vividly depict the way sport can transcend the television screen to impact on wider life, hopes and ambitions.

What Happened to Serie A: The Rise, Fall and Signs of Revival
In the 1980s and 1990s, Serie A was known as `Il campionato piu bello del mondo' - the most beautiful championship in the world - and had the highest match attendances in Europe. The stadiums were not only full of people, but full of colour, flags, songs and rituals. Italy hosted World Cup 1990 and the stadia and stars on show in Serie A became iconic. Across a ten year period from 1989 to 1999 a remarkable 10 different Serie A clubs occupied nearly half the places in the finals of the Champions League and Europa Cup. They were dominant. But then in the 2000s they began to fall behind and despite the Azzurri winning the World Cup in 2006 and Inter Milan winning the Champions League in 2010, Italian football was on a downwards trajectory that saw the national team fail to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, their first absence from the tournament since 1958. What happened and why? In this extraordinary book, Steven G. Mandis investigates. Given unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to Italian clubs and key decision makers and players, Mandis is the first outside researcher to rigorously analyse both the on-the-pitch and business aspects of a club and league. What he learns is completely unexpected and challenges popular explanations and conventional wisdom.

Brave New World: Inside Pochettino's Spurs
The Sunday Times Bestseller The exclusive behind-the-scenes story of the Mauricio Pochettino revolution at Spurs, told in his own words Since joining the club in 2014, Mauricio Pochettino has transformed Tottenham from underachievers into genuine title contenders. In the process, he has marked himself out as one of the best managers in the world. He has done so by promoting an attacking, pressing style of football and by nurturing home-grown talent, fully endearing himself to the Spurs faithful along the way. Guillem Balague was granted unprecedented access to Pochettino and his backroom staff for the duration of the 2016-17 season, and was therefore able to draw on extensive interview material with Pochettino, his family, his closest assistants, players such as Dele Alli and Harry Kane, and even a very rare conversation with Daniel Levy to tell the manager's story in his own words. From Pochettino's early years as a player and coach to his transformation of Tottenham into one of the best teams in England, the book uniquely reveals the inner workings of the man and of his footballing philosophy. It also lays bare what it takes to run a modern-day football team competing at the highest level over the course of a single campaign. The result is the most comprehensive and compelling portrait of a manager and of a club in the Premier League era.

Play in Philosophy and Social Thought
To understand play, we need a bottom-up phenomenology of play. This phenomenology highlights the paradox that it is the players who play the game, but it is also the game which makes us players. Yet what is it that plays us, when we play? Do we play the game, or does the game play us? These questions concern the relation between the playing subject and play as something larger than the individual - play as craft, play as rhythm, play between normality and otherness, even play as religion, as a sense of spiritual play between self and other. This goes deeper than the welfare-political or educational intention to make people play or play more, or to advise individuals to play in a correct and useful way. Exploring topics such as identity, otherness, and disability, as well as activities including skiing, yoga, dance and street sport, this interdisciplinary study continues the work of the late Henning Eichberg and sheds new light on the questions that play at the borders of philosophy, anthropology, and the sociology of sport and leisure. Play in Philosophy and Social Thought is a fascinating resource for students of philosophy of sport, cultural studies, sport sciences and anthropological studies. It is also a thought-provoking read for sport and play philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists, cultural studies scholars, and practitioners working with play.
