ALEX FERGUSON My Autobiography: The autobiography of the legendary Manchester United manager
Sir Alex Ferguson's compelling story is always honest and revealing he reflects on his managerial career that embraced unprecedented European success for Aberdeen and 26 triumphant seasons with Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson's best-selling autobiography has now been updated to offer reflections on events at Manchester United since his retirement as well as his teachings at the Harvard Business School, a night at the Oscars and a boat tour round the Hebrides, where he passed unrecognised. The extra material adds fresh insights and detail on his final years as United's manager. Both the psychology of management and the detail of football strategy at the top level can be complex matters but no-one has explained them in a more interesting and accessible way for the general reader than Sir Alex does here. MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY is revealing, endlessly entertaining and above all inspirational.

Contested Fields: A Global History of Modern Football
Few cultural activities speak more powerfully to international histories of the modern world than football. In the late nineteenth century, this cheap and simple sport emerged as a major legacy of Britain's formal and informal empires and spread quickly across Europe, South America, and Africa. More slowly and hesitantly, it made inroads into the sports cultures of North America and Australasia. Today, football (known to many as soccer) is arguably the world's most popular pastime, an activity played and watched by millions of people around the globe. It has also become the focus of a rich and diverse body of scholarly research. Contested Fields introduces readers to key aspects of the global game, synthesizing research on football's transnational role in reflecting and shaping political, socio-economic, and cultural developments over the past 150 years. Each chapter uses case studies and cutting-edge scholarship to analyze an important element of football's international story: migration, money, competition, gender, race, space, spectatorship, and confrontation.

The Mavericks: English Football When Flair Wore Flares
First published 25 years ago, The Mavericks was one of a new breed of sophisticated football titles. Artfully combining sports journalism with social history and sharp pop culture references, this updated edition explores 1970s football when a cult group of footballers delivered flair on the pitch and flamboyance off it. Cocky, coiffured strikers meet David Bowie and Alvin Stardust; Gola boots exchange kicks with A Clockwork Orange and The Likely Lads; Admiral sock tags, platform heels and kipper ties mingle with cod wars, Harrods bombings and three-day weeks. In this, Steen recreates the early Seventies, the era when football joined the vanguard of English youth culture. This personal account revolves around seven Englishmen who followed in the trail blazed by football's first tabloid star, George Best - Stan Bowles, Tony Currie, Charlie George, Alan Hudson, Rodney Marsh, Peter Osgood and Frank Worthington. Proud individuals amid an increasingly corporate environment, their invention and artistry were matched only by a disdain for authority and convention. Their belief in football as performance art, as showbiz, gave the game a boost, and elevated them to cult status. During their heyday, nevertheless, they were largely ignored by a succession of England managers, none of whom were able to assemble a side competent enough to qualify for the World Cup finals. Against a backdrop of increasing violence on the field and terraces alike, of battles between players and the Establishment, this book - now featuring a new Foreword, Postscript and photos - examines an anomaly at the heart of English culture, one that symbolised the death of post-Sixties optimism, the end of innocence.

-Passmore's comics are infused with his interest in anarchism and punk politics. They are mediations on the issues of the day filtered through a punchy, pop art cartooning style and genre tropes. -A mixture of Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man, William Klein's Mr. Freedom and anarcho-punk philosophy. A biting satire of our current climate with analogues of Colin Kaepernick, Black Lives Matter, neo-liberalism, far-movements, and more mixed into this mediation on a melange of methodologies and approaches to navigating the current state of affairs. -His political cartoons in The Nib and his comics Your Black Friend and Daygloayhole have demonstrated his uncanny ability to present radical politics in genre that don't feel patronising or twee, but retain the bite of the concepts he presents without being pedantic. -Passmore's comics are tapping into the mindset of readers young and old who feel disenfranchised and broken down by the state of the world. He is a rising star as demonstrated by the success of 2016's Your Black Friend, which won an Ignatz Award, was nominated for an Eisner, was on NPR's list of 100 favourite comics and graphic novels of 2017, and was turned into an animated film. He is collaborating with Upgrade Soul cartoonist Ezra Claytan Daniels on the eagerly awaited BTTM FDRS in 2019 from Fantagraphics, further cementing that 2019 will be a big year for the young cartoonist.

The Year the Packers Came Back: Green Bay's 1972 Resurgence
The 1972 Green Bay Packers were not expected to challenge for a playoff spot, or even to top their four victories from the season before. The team lacked bona fide superstars. But the players were an eclectic group of over-achievers, 20 of whom were brand new to the team. Despite disheartening decisions by a questionable head coach, they gelled almost immediately and by season's end became the only Packers team throughout the 1970s to earn a division title. How they succeeded beyond all expectations is one of the great stories in pro football history.

Baltimore is home to some of the greatest football players ever to step onto the gridiron. From the Colt's Johnny Unitas to the Raven's Ray Lewis, the Charm City has been blessed with multiple championship teams. Between the Colts and Ravens, a brief but significant chapter of Baltimore football history was written; the Stallions. Formed in 1994, they were the most successful franchise in the history of the Canadian Football League, in 1995 becoming the only U.S. team to win the Grey Cup. By 1996 the Stallions were gone, undermined by the arrival of the Ravens and the overall failure of the CFL's U.S. expansion efforts. Drawing on original interviews with players, coaches, journalists and fans, this book recalls how the Stallions both captured the imagination and broke the hearts of Baltimore football fans in just 24 months.

Africa's Elite Football: Structure, Politics, and Everyday Challenges
This book explores various aspects of intra-national elite football in Africa, drawing upon the expertise of notable scholars from across the world. Africa's Elite Football focuses on an area largely ignored by current scholarship on African football where interest has focused on international migration. In exploring the intra-national, the book is written in two parts. The first is a general focus on the continent and the second is an examination of country cases. The general focus of the book is on the nature of elite tier leagues, the relationship between politics and football, the media, youth academies, intra-national migration and fans. Notably, chapters on topics such as intra-national migration present ground-breaking scholarship in this area. Currently, football discourses on migration focus on international migration of footballers and yet the majority of migration in African football is intra-national. Thus, by addressing the intra-national, this book brings attention to an area that is underrepresented in the current academic discourse. The second part of the book, which focuses on country cases, covers Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The topics explored in those cases include religiosity, health, women's football, media, and management. The coverage of health-related issues is particularly important given that several books on African football rarely broach such a topic. With its unique approach to African football, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of sports history, African studies, politics in sports and African sports.

The epic tale of the five owners who shepherded the NFL through its tumultuous early decades and built the most popular sport in America The National Football League is a towering, distinctly American colossus spewing out $14 billion in annual revenue. But it was not always a success. In The League, John Eisenberg focuses on the pioneering sportsmen who kept the league alive in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when its challenges were many and its survival was not guaranteed. At the time, college football, baseball, boxing, and horseracing dominated America's sports scene. Art Rooney, George Halas, Tim Mara, George Preston Marshall, and Bert Bell believed in pro football when few others did and ultimately succeeded only because at critical junctures each sacrificed the short-term success of his team for the longer-term good of the league. At once a history of a sport and a remarkable story of business ingenuity, The League is an essential read for any fan of our true national pastime.

The definitive, lavishly illustrated history of the Green Bay Packers, commemorating the team's 100-year anniversaryNot only are the Packers the only fan-owned team in any of North America's major pro sports leagues, but Green Bay -- population 104,057 -- is also the smallest city with a big-time franchise. The People's Team paints compelling pictures of a franchise, a town, and a fan base. No other team in pro sports is so bound to the place that gave birth to it. Here is the story of the Packers and of Green Bay -- from the days of the French fur traders who settled on the shores of La Baie in the seventeenth century, to the team's pursuit of its fourteenth NFL championship. Featuring essays by Peter King, Chuck Mercein, Austin Murphy, and David S. Neft, The People's Team is a must-have for fans, old and new, and the definitive illustrated history of the most important team in the NFL.

The Life Coach: Small-Town Lessons on Faith, Family, and Football
In small-town Decatur, Texas, football was life. And Ronnie Gage couldn't wait to become a Decatur Eagle. His football ability was decent, but he knew there wasn't a big demand for 150-pound center and safety, so he focused his career goals on the next best thing-coaching. This provided a way to give back to a sport, and a community, who had given him so much. Nearly forty years later, after countless winning seasons and championships, Coach Gage found himself in a unique situation, coaching an unusual player. When Emmet (Tom) Thompson joined the Austin College football team as a spry fifty-nine year-old kicker, Coach Gage had his doubts. But Thompson's dedication and tenacity spoke for himself on the field, and the two men forged an unshakable friendship built on their three loves-faith, family, and football. In The Life Coach, Coach Gage shares the important life lessons he's learned both on and off the field. Tom Thompson-kicking coach, author, and speaker-lends supporting anecdotes based on his many years in leadership roles. Together, they hope to inspire players and parents, coaches and crowds, to live a life of faith on and off the field, to make the most of every opportunity, and to have fun while doing it.

Game Changer
Cora Staunton is an iconic figure in the world of modern GAA. In this ground-breaking autobiography, she reveals her extraordinary journey from teenage rookie to the highest-scoring forward in the history of Ladies Gaelic Football. Since making her senior inter-county debut for Mayo at just thirteen years of age, Cora has become a feared and respected opponent on any pitch. Now, for the first time, she recounts the triumphs of her career and the personal struggles that have plagued it. In this refreshingly candid book, Cora recalls finding refuge in the game after the death of her mother, but also speaks openly about the challenges and conflicts she and her teammates have experienced in the under-resourced world of female sport. She gives a fascinating insight into her move to a professional team in Sydney and how she coped with going from a veteran to a newcomer overnight. In the first-ever autobiography of a female GAA star, Game Changer will take its place as one of the most influential and powerful sports books in recent years.

A PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER One of the best insider-football books ever written. --Douglas Brinkley A riveting chronicle of Michigan's Jim Harbaugh era, and an unprecedented look at the inner workings (Sporting News) of a big-time college football program For the past year, John U. Bacon has received rare access to Jim Harbaugh's University of Michigan football team: coaches, players, and staffers, in closed-door meetings, locker rooms, meals, and classes. Overtime captures this storied program at the crossroads, as the sport's winningest team battles to reclaim its former glory. But what if the price of success today comes at the cost of your soul? Do you pay it, or compete without compromising? In the spirit of HBO's Hardknocks, Overtime delivers a deeply reported human portrait that follows the Wolverine coaches, players, and staffers through the 2018 season, including Harbaugh, offensive stars Shea Patterson and Karan Higdon, NFL-ready defensive standouts Rashan Gary, Devin Bush Jr., and Chase Winovich, second-stringers striving to find their place on the team, and their parents' reactions to it all. Bacon met with them every week during a season that saw the Wolverines ride a ten-game winning streak to #4 in the nation, then take a beating at the hands of arch-rival Ohio State, led by controversial coach Urban Meyer, Harbaugh's foil. Overtime also previews the crucial 2019 campaign ahead. Above all, this is a human story. In Overtime we not only discover what these public figures are like behind the scenes, we learn what the experience means to them as they go through it - the trials, the triumphs, and the unexpected answers to a central question: Is it worth it? From the poet laureate of Michigan football (according to New York Times's Joe Drape), and one of the keenest observers of college football, Overtime offers a window into a legendary program and the sport itself that only John U. Bacon could deliver.

Further Details into the Criminal Life of a Former Football Star From teenage gang member to $40 million star of the New England Patriots, from All-American college player to drug addict, murderer, dead by suicide in his jail cell at age twenty-seven...you think you know the Aaron Hernandez story? You don't. For the first time, Aaron Hernandez's Killing Fields will reveal the real, hitherto unknown motive for the killing of Odin Lloyd--the only crime for which Hernandez was ever convicted and a revelation so shocking it will shake the foundations of the NFL itself. It will also unpick a pattern of violence and brutality stretching back to his time as a teenager at the University of Florida, revealing further shooting victims, evidence of his involvement in the double murder of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado in 2012. Featuring new interviews with Hernandez's cellmates, serving police investigators, prosecutors, psychologists, attorneys--as well as key witnesses including Hernandez's drug dealer, a male stripper he hired days before the killing of Lloyd--plus extensive testimony from relatives of Hernandez's victims, Aaron Hernandez's Killing Fields is the exhaustive, definitive account of the rise and fall of a man undone by his own appetite for violence, gangsterism, power, drugs, and self-destruction. This is the real Aaron Hernandez story--and perhaps just the beginning of a whole new murder investigation.

Hollywood's Team: The Story of the 1950s Los Angeles Rams and Pro Football's Golden Age
In 2016, after twenty years in St. Louis, the Rams are back in their longtime home. Some call their return to Los Angeles a relocation, but it's more the restoration of a city landmark. Hollywood's Team follows the Rams of the 1950s. They were glamorous, glitzy, and most of all, they were exciting. Like the city itself, the Rams were comprised of both big stars and everyday workhorses like John Hock, father of the author-a quiet, humble, and stout offensive guard. They were the first major professional sports team west of the Mississippi River, the first to integrate, even before Jackie Robinson, the first team to reach a million fans, and the first team with a TV contract. The Rams of the 1950s were, in so many ways, the first modern sports franchise. Their roster is a who's who of the NFL Hall Fame. Names such as quarterback Norm The Dutchman Van Brocklin, wide receiver Elroy Crazy Legs Hirsch, Bob Waterfield, Tom Fears, defensive back Dick Night Train Lane, and linebacker Les Richter. Other notables from the era include a wunderkind public relations man named Pete Rozelle who would go on to become the boy commissioner of the NFL at age thirty-three. Head coach Sid Gillman was an architect of the modern passing game. Owner Dan Reeves was a genius in business, but troubled by alcohol. Heck, even the iconic comedian Bob Hope was a partial owner of the Rams at the time. The Rams were Hollywood's team. This is their story.
