The Language Of Letting Go
The Language of Letting Go Melody Beattie, the bestselling author of " Codependent No More" and " Beyond Codependency ," has now created Hazelden's first meditation book for codependents. Here are reflections that nurture spiritual and emotional health, serenity, and recovery. Focusing on self-esteem and acceptance, and written in the direct, unsentimental style of Beattie's bestsellers, these daily meditations give voice to the thoughts and feelings common to men and women in recovery. They encourage fruitful reflection on problem-solving, self-awareness, sexuality, intimacy, detachment, attachment, acceptance, feelings, relationships, spirituality, and more. Offering hope and inspiration, tempered with the clear-eyed perspective of one who has been there and back, the author empowers readers to affirm who they are--their beliefs, thoughts, instincts, feelings--and, ultimately, their ability to change. These meditations are tools designed to help recovering codependents realize the goal Beattie defines as "stopping the pain and gaining control of your life"

A Sunday Times Book of the Year 'Riveting, clear-sighted and exceptionally articulate... Her literary and psychoanalytic fluency gives the book an impact that feels arrestingly honest... Heartbreaking' Daily Telegraph 'An unsparing account of a family destroyed by drugs. Unique and haunting' Sunday Times 'What gives this book its astonishing power is not the guilt, but the intelligence and literary skill' Guardian 'I write, knowing that writing at all may be seen as a betrayal of family; a shaming, exploitative act. Anyone reading this who thinks so, please know that I thought it before you' For years Sigrid Rausing watched helplessly as her brother Hans and his wife Eva succumbed to drug addiction. It afflicted a terrible toll on their family, culminating in Eva's tragic early death. As this death led to inquest and media circus, the world looked on in horror, but few understood the suffering endured by the Rausing family. In Mayhem, Sigrid explores the collateral damage addiction wreaks on loved ones. Telling her family's story, she examines painful and rarely discussed questions. What is it like to live with addiction in the family? How can you help without hurting the one you love? And what does it mean to survive another's addiction?

Mentors: How to Help and be Helped
Could happiness lie in helping others and being open to accepting help yourself? Mentors - the follow up to Sunday Times number one bestseller, Recovery - describes the benefits of seeking and offering help. `I have mentors in every area of my life, as a comic, a dad, a recovering drug addict, a spiritual being and as a man who believes that we, as individuals and the great globe itself, are works in progress and that through a chain of mentorship we can improve individually and globally, together . . . One of the unexpected advantages my drug addiction granted is that the process of recovery that I practise includes a mentorship tradition. I will encourage you to find mentors of your own and explain how you may better use the ones you already have. Furthermore, I will tell you about my experiences mentoring others and how invaluable that has been on my ongoing journey to self-acceptance and how it has helped me to transform from a bewildered and volatile vagabond to a (mostly) present and (usually) focussed husband and father.' - Russell Brand Mentors: How to Help and Be Helped describes the impact that a series of significant people have had on the author - from the wayward youths he tried to emulate growing up in Essex, through the first ex-junkie sage, to the people he turns to today to help him be a better father. It explores how we all - consciously and unconsciously - choose guides, mentors and heroes throughout our lives and examines the new perspectives they can bring.

Ever sworn off alcohol for a month and found yourself drinking by the 7th? Think there's 'no point' in just one drink? Welcome! Quitting drinking, whether for a month or for life, is enormously satisfying, but also fiendishly difficult. -There's the getting started ('But I have that party next week!') -There's the feeling clenched and socially anxious. -Throw in a sizeable amount of social pressure and suspicious questions ('So, do you have a drinking problem?' -Finally, chuck in the hundreds of pro-drinking messages we see every day; films where a round of shots always comes with a whoop; fridge magnets that say 'I don't trust people who don't drink'; pub clapboards announcing 'Strong people need strong drinks'; and memes declaring 'Beer: it's a holiday in a glass.' Whew. It's no wonder we find it tricky to stay teetotal. But don't worry. We're going to tackle all of the above. I'm going to give you tools that enable you to clear all of these stumbling blocks with the grace of a gazelle. So, let's get started, shall we? PRAISE FOR CATHERINE GRAY'S WRITING: An icon of the Quit Lit movement. Conde Nast Traveller Fascinating. Bryony Gordon. Not remotely preachy. The Times Jaunty, shrewd and convincing. Feeding Everyone No Matter What: Managing Food Security After Global Catastrophe
Feeding Everyone No Matter What presents a scientific approach to the practicalities of planning for long-term interruption to food production. The primary historic solution developed over the last several decades is increased food storage. However, storing up enough food to feed everyone would take a significant amount of time and would increase the price of food, killing additional people due to inadequate global access to affordable food. Humanity is far from doomed, however, in these situations - there are solutions. This book provides an order of magnitude technical analysis comparing caloric requirements of all humans for five years with conversion of existing vegetation and fossil fuels to edible food. It presents mechanisms for global-scale conversion including: natural gas-digesting bacteria, extracting food from leaves, and conversion of fiber by enzymes, mushroom or bacteria growth, or a two-step process involving partial decomposition of fiber by fungi and/or bacteria and feeding them to animals such as beetles, ruminants (cows, deer, etc), rats and chickens. It includes an analysis to determine the ramp rates for each option and the results show that careful planning and global cooperation could ensure the bulk of humanity and biodiversity could be maintained in even in the most extreme circumstances. * Summarizes the severity and probabilities of global catastrophe scenarios, which could lead to a complete loss of agricultural production* More than 10 detailed mechanisms for global-scale solutions to the food crisis and their evaluation to test their viability* Detailed roadmap for future R&D for human survival after global catastrophe

Food Addiction: The Body Knows: Revised & Expanded Edition by Kay Sheppard
Are you a food addict? Do you gain more weight than you lose after every diet? Can one cookie destroy all your good intentions? Do you eat when you are disappointed, tense or anxious? Since its publication, Food Addiction has become a primary resource for food addicts and compulsive eaters. Now it is updated and presented in a revised and expanded edition, with a new chapter on relapse. For a food addict, relapse is an ever present danger which begins in the mind before reaching for that cupcake or other trigger food. Here food addiction is defined, trigger foods are identified and consequences of food addiction are revealed. A lifetime eating plan demonstrating how to stick with a healthful food plan for the long term is also provided. For some people, foods can be as addictive as alcohol, Kay Sheppard explains. Gummy bears and marshmallow chicks can be vicious killers whose effects can lead to depression, irritability and even suicide. The terrible truth is that for certain individuals, refined carbohydrates can trigger the addictive process. This book is an effort to help you understand and solve the problems of compulsive eating.

Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions
`I believe that we are all on the addict spectrum, that the object of addiction is less important than the condition, and that in recovering as individuals, we can change the world. This book describes the way I work my programme and how it can work for anyone' A definitive guide to the disease of addiction from an addict who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food and eBay, it will help anyone who is an addict (or loves an addict) make the first tentative steps into recovery. Russell Brand gently and humorously recounts his story and shares the advice and wisdom he has gained from his thirteen years of recovery. Brand wants to speak to those suffering along the full spectrum of addiction - from the serious, life-threatening misuse of substances to the more subtle but still troubling crutches, such as getting trapped in unhealthy and destructive relationships to avoid difficult feelings. This is a book for everyone.

From the First Bite: A Complete Guide to Recovery from Food Addiction
Renowned therapist, eating disorder specialist and recovering food addict Kay Sheppard helps countless individuals win their battles over food addiction-people for whom diets, pills and purging have become a way of life. In 1993, her groundbreaking book, , explained the illness of food addiction from the physiological origins through recovery. Today, obesity is on the rise. In addition to the 300,000 overweight people in this country, millions more who may not look overweight are unable to control their eating. Sheppard's follow-up book, From the First Biteoffers the latest medical insights into food addiction coupled with time-tested, practical advice. Unlike other books that are very dry in nature, this book includes compelling personal stories and do's and don'ts from other recovering and relapsed food addicts, including the author herself, who began her own recovery in 1967. The book explains how to avoid the physiological and situational triggers that lead to relapse; how to confront the emotional issues behind food cravings; how to establish a balanced food plan that eliminates cravings; and how to avoid hidden dangers in cleverly packaged foods. The book also includes a handy Twelve-Step workbook. Just as Sheppard's first book broke new ground, her latest work offers a critical first step for food addicts on the road to physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.
