The development of atomic bombs under the auspices of the U.S. Army's Manhattan Project during World War II is considered to be the outstanding news story of the twentieth century. In this book, a physicist and expert on the history of the Project presents a comprehensive overview of this momentous achievement. The first three chapters cover the history of nuclear physics from the discovery of radioactivity to the discovery of fission, and would be ideal for instructors of a sophomore-level Modern Physics course. Student-level exercises at the ends of the chapters are accompanied by answers. Chapter 7 covers the physics of first-generation fission weapons at a similar level, again accompanied by exercises and answers. For the interested layman and for non-science students and instructors, the book includes extensive qualitative material on the history, organization, implementation, and results of the Manhattan Project and the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing missions. This textbook takes the reader on a tour of the most important landmarks of theoretical physics: classical, quantum, and statistical mechanics, relativity, electrodynamics, as well as the most modern and exciting of all: elementary particles and the physics of fractals. The second edition has been supplemented with a new chapter devoted to concise though complete presentation of dynamical systems, bifurcations and chaos theory. The treatment is confined to the essentials of each area, presenting all the central concepts and equations at an accessible level. Chapters 1 to 4 contain the standard material of courses in theoretical physics and are supposed to accompany lectures at the university; thus they are rather condensed. They are supposed to fill one year of teaching. Chapters 5 and 6, in contrast, are written less condensed since this material may not be part of standard lectures and thus could be studied without the help of a university teacher. An appendix on elementary particles lies somewhere in between: It could be a summary of a much more detailed course, or studied without such a course. Illustrations and numerous problems round off this unusual textbook. The acquisition and processing of such signals play an important role in clinical routines. They are usually considered as major indicators which provide clinicians and physicians with useful information during diagnostic and monitoring processes. In some applications, the purpose is not necessarily medical. It may also be industrial. For instance, a real-time EEG system analysis can be used to control and analyze the vigilance of a car driver. In this case, the purpose of such a system basically consists of preventing crash risks. Furthermore, in certain other appli- tions,asetof biosignals (e. g. ECG,respiratorysignal,EEG,etc. ) can be used toc- trol or analyze human emotions. This is the case of the famous polygraph system, also known as the lie detector , the ef ciency of which remains open to debate! Time Pattern of Ionizing Radiation in Balloon Altitudes in High Latitudes
Zwischen dem 12. Juni und dem 2. August 1961 wurde eine Serie von 23 Fltigen mit unbemannten Ballonen zur Messung der Kosmischen Strahlung, Solarer Protonen und Rontgen- strahlungsausbrtichen in groBen Hohen tiber der Nordlicht- zone erfolgreich durchgeftihrt. Die automatisch registrie- renden Gerate und die Besonderheiten der MeBmethode werden im einzelnen beschrieben. Die MeBergebnisse sind in 45 Kurvenblattern (Teil B) zusammengefaBt. Neben den Rontgenstrahlungsausbrtichen, die verhaltnis- maBig haufig in der Nordlichtzone auftreten, wurden 4 FaIle von Injektionen solarer Protonen am 12. , 18. , 20. und 27. Juli registriert, wahrend sich 2 sehr aktive Fackel- gebiete tiber die Sonnenscheibe hinwegbewegten. Die verschiedenen Ereignisse werden kurz diskutiert. Die hier beschriebenen Messungen fanden zu einem groBen Teil gleichzeitig mit solchen ahnlicher Art statt, die von amerikanischen Gruppen durchgeftihrt wurden. I. Introduction Until 20 years ago most of our knowledge on cosmical ob- jects was based merely on the analysis of visible light reaching the earth from outer space. This changed when appropriate techniques had been developed to utilize in- creasingly the perception that every kind of radiation or - generally spoken - any structure of energy hitting the earth carries information on its origin and on the con- ditions in space which influenced its qualities and propagation. This holds especially also for radiation of charged particles. In the main part of this paper we shall report on measure- ments of such charged particles and of high energy photons produced by them.

On June 1St 2004 the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Technische Universitat Miinchen bestowed the degree of the doctor honoris causa to Leopold B. Felsen, for extraordinary achievements in the theory of electromag- netic fields. On this occasion on June 1St and 2nd 2004 at the Technische Universitat Miinchen a symposium on Fields, Networks, Computational Methods, and Systems: A Modern View of Engineering Electrodynamics in honor of Leopold B. Felsen was organized. The symposium topic focused on an important area of Leopold Felsen research interests and, as the title emphasizes, on a modern view of applied Electro- dynamics. While the fundamental physical laws of electrodynamics are well known, research in this field is experiencing a steady continuous growth. The problem -solving approaches of, say, twenty years ago may seem now fairly obsolete since considerable progress has been made in the meantime. In this monograph we collect samples of present day state of the art in dealing with electromagnetic fields, their network theory representation, their computation and, finally, on system applications. The network formulation of field problems can improve the problem formulation and also contribute to the solution methodology. Network theory systematic approaches for circuit analysis are based on the separation of the circuit into the connection circuit and the circuit elements. Many applications in science and technology rely on computations of the electromagnetic field in either man-made or natural complex structures.

Emerging Raman Applications and Techniques in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Fields
In recent years, Raman spectroscopy has undergone a major transformation from a specialist laboratory technique to a practical analytical tool. This change was driven on several parallel fronts by dramatic advances in laser instrumentation, detectors, spectrometers, and optical ?lter technology. This resulted in the advent of a new generation of compact and robust Raman instruments with improved sensitivity and ?exibility. These devices could be operated for the ?rst time by non-specialists outside the laboratory envir- ment. Indeed, Raman spectroscopy is now found in the chemical and phar- ceutical industries for process control and has very recently been introduced into hospitals. Handheld instruments are used in forensic and other security applications and battery-operated versions for ?eld use are found in envir- mental and geological studies. Simultaneously, major advances have been seen in the development of powerful processing methods, some driven by the progress of related spect- scopic methods such as NIR absorption spectroscopy. Numerous chemometric packages are available for advanced analysis of data. These do not require specialist user knowledge (although caution is required in interpreting - sults) and provide further enhanced sensitivity and capability to the Raman technique. In this book we focus on two such major ?elds, biomedical and ph- maceutical. The book is aimed at life sciences and pharmaceutical re- erships. Accordingly, the chapter authors emphasize explanatory material with practical implications rather than focusing on mathematical detail.

If the molecule possesses a permanent electric dipole moment it can absorb a quantum of microwave energy hv and make a transition to a higher rotational' state governed by the selection rules L1 I = + 1, L1 K = O. The pure rotational absorption frequency is then given by v=2BI (1. 2) where I is the angular momentum quantum number for the upper state of the transition. If an isotopic substitution is made for an atom lying along the sym- metry axis of the molecule, thus changing its moment of inertia and hence its B value, the rotational absorption frequency will shift. The program of mass determination from microwave spectra is to correlate this frequency shift with the change in mass of the substituted isotope. These shifts can range from a few Mc to several thousands of Mc for a change of one mass unit, being larger generally for the lighter atoms. Typical isotopic shifts in the middle mass region (A =60 to 130) are 100 Mc per mass unit. As mentioned above, frequency shifts in the 24000 Mc region can be measured to at least an accuracy of 0.
