The Pamir international conference on Transfer Phenomena in MagnetoHydroDynamic & Electroconducting Flows is one of the manifestations associated to Hydromag . This international organisation aims to coordinate and promote the MHD research in the world. The organiser of this conference is the Pamir group from the French laboratory LEGI (Laboratoire des Ecoulements Geophysiques et Industriels) which has close connections with INPG (lnstitut National Polythechnique de Grenoble), with the Joseph Fourier University of Grenoble and with the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). In September 26-30, 1997 this conference was organised for the third time at the Paul Langevin centre (Aussois, France) which belongs to the CNRS. Approximately 15 countries were represented by about 120 participants. Papers included in this volume are those presented at the third Pamir conference after selection by the scientific committee and referee's procedure. The formal presentations and invited lectures were focused on four main topics related to: Interfacial heat and mass transfer phenomena, Energetic applications, Dynamo effect, and MEHD Phenomena. One of the perspectives of the conference was to promote a productive interaction between the MHD and the chemical engineering research communities. The possibility to use an external magnetic field to improve and control the mass transfer processes in electrochemical systems, sometimes called magnetoelectrolysis, was introduced as a new topic of the Pamir conference and is considered as a relatively new and promising branch of MHD research. In particular a wide field of applications in various domains is expected.

More than six years ago, several of Rabotnov's close friends and colleagues from the USSR and USA decided to contribute a volume on Plasticity and Failure of Solids in honor of his 70th birthday. The celebration was interrupted unexpectedly by his death on May 13, 1985 at which time another decision was made still to publish the work, but as a memorial volume. As in any field of scientific endeavor, research confronts the scientists with anomalies; our chosen area is no exception. The ways in which failure criteria and plasticity theory are combined can differ widely among the researchers; they will never yield quite the same results. Each of the invited contributors has, therefore, been encouraged to express his views and to expound on his personal opinion. The contributors are free of enumeration from the authority and/or consensus of any scientific society or community. What impedes scientific process is the esoteric tradition of accepting ideas and theories by consensus among members of societies and communities. The absence of such a trend is refreshing; the collaboration between the authors from the USSR and the USA had to be one of the contributing factors. The Department of Applied Mechanics of the Royal Institution of Engineers in the Netherlands (Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs) organised on April 2-4, 1990 the first National Applied Mechanics Congress about the theme: Integration of Theory and Applications in Applied Mechanics The idea behind this initiative was to bring together the Applied Mechanics communities in The Netherlands and Belgium and to create an environment in which new developments in the field could be discussed and in which connections to other disciplines could be established. Among an extensive list of possible subjects the following were selected as congress topics: - non-linear material behaviour, - chaos, - mechatronics, - liquid-solid interactions, - mathematics and applied mechanics, - integration of Applied Mechanics and other disciplines. This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Unsteady Combustion , which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines , held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by Combusting Flow Diagnostics conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for steady combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.
