Fluctuational Superconductivity of Magnetic Systems
This is a monograph on the fluctuational theory of superconductivity. The theory was originally developed by M. A. Savchenko in 1964 in response to the work of B. T. Matthias, the discoverer of superconductive compounds. Further development of the theory led to the prediction of the existence of high-temperature superconductors among magnetic and nonmagnetic compounds of rare-earth metals, ceramics, and polymers. In 1987 this prediction was experimentally verified by the discovery of high-Tc superconducting rare-earth metal oxides by I. Bednorz and K. Muller. To date, this is the only account that explains consistently all the available data. The theory of high-temperature superconductivity is based on the concept of an enhanced electron-phonon interaction which leads to an attraction between electrons forming superconducting pairs. This interaction is due to the exchange spin fluctu ations (exchange enhancement effect). In compounds in which there is no magnetic ordering except at very low temperatures, such as in rare-earth metal oxides, the electron-phonon interaction is strengthened due to fluctuations in the spins of the conducting electrons. If there is magnetic ordering in a superconductor at a tempera ture higher than or of the same order as the critical superconducting temperature Tc, then the attraction in the electron pairs will be further increased because the Coulomb repulsion is overwhelmed by fluctuations in the spins forming the long-range anti fer romagnetic order.

Square-Wave Voltammetry: Theory and Application
In a real tour-de-force of scientific publishing, three distinguished experts here systematically deliver both the underlying theory and the practical guidance needed to effectively apply square-wave voltammetry techniques. Square-wave voltammetry is a technique used in analytical applications and fundamental studies of electrode mechanisms. In order to take full advantage of this technique, a solid understanding of signal generation, thermodynamics, and kinetics is essential. Not only does this book cover all the necessary background and basics, but it also offers an appendix on mathematical modeling plus a chapter on electrode mechanisms that briefly reviews the numerical formulae needed to simulate experiments using popular software tools.

Boundary Element Analysis of Viscous Flow
In recent years, the performance of digital computers has been improved by the rapid development of electronics at remarkable speed. In addition, substantial research has been carried out in developing numerical analysis techniques. Nowadays, a variety of problems in the engineering and scientific fields can be solved by using not only super computers but also personal computers. After the first book titled Boundary Element was published by Brebbia in 1978, the boundary element method (BEM) has been recognized as a powerful numerical technique which has some advantages over the finite difference method (FDM) and finite element method (FEM). A great amount of research has been carried out on the applications of BEM to various problems. The numerical analysis of fluid mechanics and heat transfer problems plays a key role in analysing some phenomena and it has become recognized as a new research field called Computational Fluid Dynamics . In partic ular, the analysis of viscous flow including thermal convection phenomena is one of the most important problems in engineering fields. The FDM and FEM have been generally .applied to solve these problems because of non singularities of governing equations.

The chapters summarize years of extensive research in each area, andprovideinsightinthenewthemesofnaturalproductresearch.Manyofthe contributors illustrate their laboratory experiences. It's obvious that readers will gain exciting and essential information fromthe volume. In the ?rst chapter, Kayser et al. describe the chemistry, biosynthesis and biological activities of artemisinin, one of the most promising antimalarial molecules, and its related natural peroxides. They present new strategies of producing artemisinin that utilize fascinating technologies. as Additionally, thepharmacokineticpro?leandthedevelopmentofnewdrugdeliverysystems onPlasmodium infected erythrocytesare presented . Khan describes some aspects of sugar-derived heterocycles and their p- cursors which are utilized as the inhibitors against glycogen phosphorylases (GPs), and are responsible for the release of mono-glucose from poly-glucose (glycogen) in the second chapter. The inhibitors of GP could help to stop or slowdownglycogenolysisaswellasglucoseproduction.Ultimately, thewhole processwill result in the recovery fromdiabetes of NIDDMpatients. In his contribution, Verma studies quantitative structure-activityrelati- ship (QSAR) and proposes several interesting QSAR models of heterocyclic molecules having cytotoxicactivities against different cancer cell lines, which couldin turn clarify the chemical-biologicalinteractions ofsuch compounds. Alamgir et al., in the fourth chapter, review the recent progress of the synthesis, reactivity and biological activities of benzimidazoles. Additionally, they describe several new techniques and procedures for the synthesis of the same scaffold. Fluorescent proteins are intimately connected to research in the life sciences. Tagging of gene products with fluorescent proteins has revolutionized all areas of biosciences, ranging from fundamental biochemistry to clinical oncology, to environmental research. The discovery of the Green Fluorescent Protein, its first, seminal application and the ingenious development of a broad palette of fluorescence proteins of other colours, was consequently recognised with the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2008. Fluorescent Proteins II highlights the physicochemical and biophysical aspects of fluorescent protein technology beyond imaging. It is tailored to meet the needs of physicists, chemists and biologists who are interested in the fundamental properties of fluorescent proteins, while also focussing on specific applications. The implementations described are cutting-edge studies and exemplify how the physical and chemical properties of fluorescent proteins can stimulate novel findings in life sciences.

Quantitative Mathematical Models in Radiation Biology: Proceedings of the Symposium at Schloss Rauisch-Holzhausen, FRG, July 1987
Radiation is the one agent among all environmental factors which may damage biological systems that is not only easily quantifiable but can also be measured with unsurpassed resolution. Its primary effects on atoms and molecules are well understood, and the secondary processes can be followed by sophisticated experimental techniques. The quantum nature of interactions and the importance of stochastic variations call for an exact mathematical description. This task is by no means simple, and presents a challenge both to the experimentalist and to the theoretician. It is hoped that a generally acceptable formalism will help to quantify radiation responses, both in radiation protection and radiation therapy, and make it possible to move from a purely empirical approach with all its fallacies to real understanding.

Design of Organic Solids
Considering the high level of our knowledge concerning covalent bond formation in the organic chemistry of molecules, our understanding of the principles involved in organic solid design is almost in its infancy. While chemists today are able to synthesize organic molecules of very high complexity using sophisticated methods of preparation, they lack general approaches enabling them to reliably predict organic crystalline or solid structures from molecular descriptors - no matter how simple they are. On the other hand, nearly all the organic matter surrounding us is not in the single-molecule state but aggregated and condensed to form liquid or solid molecular assemblages and structural arrays giving rise to the appearances and properties of organic compounds we usually observe. Obviously, the electrical, optical or magnetic properties of solid organic materials that are important requirements for future technologies and high-tech applications, as well as the stability and solubility behavior of a medicament depend on the structure of the molecule and the intramolecular forces, but even more decisively on the intermolecular forces, i. e. the packing structure of the molecules to which a general approach is lacking. This situation concerned ]. Maddox some years ago to such a degree that he described it as one of the continuing scandals in the physical sciences [see (1998) Nature 335:201; see also Ball, P. (1996) Nature 381:648]. The problem of predicting organic solid and crystal structures is very dif- cult.

Organofluorine Chemistry: Fluorinated Alkenes and Reactive Intermediates
The excitement of the chemistry of organofluorine compounds stems from the unique reactions that arise and the special effects that introduction of fluorine impart on a molecule. Indeed, these effects are now exploited in a remarkable array of applications the whole of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and plant-protection industries. In this two-volume set, we have gathered authors with immense experience in various aspects of their fields and each is a world-authority on the important topics which they have described. The first volume treats the chemistry of fluorinated alkenes, which are important building-blocks for the synthesis of a range of fluorinated systems and are used widely in industry. The second volume is directed to techniques and synthons for obtaining fluorinated compounds.

New Developments in Polymer Analytics I
The two volumes New Developments in Polymer Analytics deal with recent progress in the characterization of polymers, mostly in solution but also at sur faces. Despite the fact that almost all of the described techniques are getting on in years, the contributions are expected to meet the readers interest because either the methods are newly applied to polymers or the instrumentation has achieved a major breakthrough leading to an enhanced utilization by polymer scientists. The first volume concentrates on separation techniques. H. Pasch summarizes the recent successes of multi dimensional chromatography in the characteriza tion of copolymers. Both, chain length distribution and the compositional het erogeneity of copolymers are accessible. Capillary electrophoresis is widely and successfully utilized for the characterization of biopolymers, particular of DNA . It is only recently that the technique has been applied to the characterization of water soluble synthetic macromolecules. This contribution of Grosche and Engelhardt focuses on the analysis of polyelectrolytes by capillary electophore sis. The last contribution of the first volume by Coelfen and Antonietti summa rizes the achievements and pitfalls of field flow fractionation techniques .The major drawbacks in the instrumentation have been overcome in recent years and the triple F techniques are currently advancing to a powerful competitor to size exclusion chromatography.

Polymers in Confined Environments
The rapidly-developing field of confined polymers is reviewed in this volume. Special emphasis is given to polymer aspects of this interdisciplinary problem. Taken together, the contributions offer ample evidence of how the field of polymer science continues to evolve with the passage of time. The topics revolve around the tendency of surfaces to impede chain relaxation and to stimulate new sorts of chain organization. These have been implicated in a variety of spectacular phenomena. Here is a listing of authors and affiliations: K. Binder (Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Germany); P.-G. de Gennes (College de France, France); E.P. Giannelis, R. Krishnamoorti, and E. Manias (Cornell University and University of Houston, USA); G.S. Grest (Exxon Research and Engineering Co., USA); L. Leger, E. Raphael, and H. Hervet (College de France, France); S.-Q. Wang (Case Western Reserve University, USA).

Density Functional Theory: An Advanced Course
Density Functional Theory (DFT) has firmly established itself as the workhorse for atomic-level simulations of condensed phases, pure or composite materials and quantum chemical systems. This work offers a rigorous and detailed introduction to the foundations of this theory, up to and including such advanced topics as orbital-dependent functionals as well as both time-dependent and relativistic DFT. Given the many ramifications of contemporary DFT, the text concentrates on the self-contained presentation of the basics of the most widely used DFT variants: this implies a thorough discussion of the corresponding existence theorems and effective single particle equations, as well as of key approximations utilized in implementations. The formal results are complemented by selected quantitative results, which primarily aim at illustrating the strengths and weaknesses of particular approaches or functionals. The structure and content of this book allow a tutorial and modular self-study approach: the reader will find that all concepts of many-body theory which are indispensable for the discussion of DFT - such as the single-particle Green's function or response functions - are introduced step by step, along with the actual DFT material. The same applies to basic notions of solid state theory, such as the Fermi surface of inhomogeneous, interacting systems. In fact, even the language of second quantization is introduced systematically in an Appendix for readers without formal training in many-body theory.
