Chiral Chromatography Thomas E. Beesley Advanced Separation Technologies Inc., Whippany, New Jersey, USA Raymond P. W. Scott Chemistry Department, Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA and Chemistry Department, Birkbeck College, University of London, UK Analytical techniques based on separation processes, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, are finding a growing range of applications in chemical, pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories. The Wiley Separation Science Series provides the analyst in these laboratories with well-focused books covering individual techniques, so that they can be applied more efficiently and effectively to contemporary analytical problems. The different enantiomers of a drug can exhibit widely different physiological activity in degree and nature. As a result, the separation and identification of enantiomers is now a very important analytical problem and chiral chromatography is the natural technique to apply to the resolution of such mixtures. Chiral Chromatography provides the reader with a basic understanding of the nature of chromatographic separations and relates the principles specifically to the separation of enantiomers. The following information is included: chiral separations involving both gas and liquid chromatography descriptions of the apparatus used for both techniques detailed discussion on the retention mechanism that results in chiral selectivity the structure and synthesis of a wide range of chirally active stationary phases used in both gas and liquid chromatography preparative applications for large scale purification of enantiomers applications of capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography. In addition to the above, a large number of examples of the separation of both commercially and physiologically interesting chiral mixtures are given, as is a detailed discussion on the mechanism of selectivity of each example. Thomas Beesley was founder and is the CEO for a leading manufacturer of chiral stationary phases and has published papers on TLC, HPLC and chiral separations involving cyclodextrins. He has also coauthored papers with Daniel W. Armstrong, an expert on modern cyclodextrin columns. Raymond Scott has worked in the field of separation science for over 40 years and has contributed extensively to the development of both gas and liquid chromatography publishing over 160 papers on the subjects.

Perspectives on Structure and Mechanism in Organic Chemistry
Helps to develop new perspectives and a deeper understanding of organic chemistry Instructors and students alike have praised Perspectives on Structure and Mechanism in Organic Chemistry because it motivates readers to think about organic chemistry in new and exciting ways. Based on the author's first hand classroom experience, the text uses complementary conceptual models to give new perspectives on the structures and reactions of organic compounds. The first five chapters of the text discuss the structure and bonding of stable molecules and reactive intermediates. These are followed by a chapter exploring the methods that organic chemists use to study reaction mechanisms. The remaining chapters examine different types of acid-base, substitution, addition, elimination, pericyclic, and photochemical reactions. This Second Edition has been thoroughly updated and revised to reflect the latest findings in physical organic chemistry. Moreover, this edition features: * New references to the latest primary and review literature * More study questions to help readers better understand and apply new concepts in organic chemistry * Coverage of new topics, including density functional theory, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, Marcus theory, molecular simulations, effect of solvent on organic reactions, asymmetric induction in nucleophilic additions to carbonyl compounds, and dynamic effects on reaction pathways The nearly 400 problems in the text do more than allow students to test their understanding of the concepts presented in each chapter. They also encourage readers to actively review and evaluate the chemical literature and to develop and defend their own ideas. With its emphasis on complementary models and independent problem-solving, this text is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in organic chemistry.

Electrochemical Science and Technology: Fundamentals and Applications
Electrochemistry is a discipline of wide scientific and technological interest. Scientifically, it explores the electrical properties of materials and especially the interfaces between different kinds of matter. Technologically, electrochemistry touches our lives in many ways that few fully appreciate; for example, materials as diverse as aluminum, nylon, and bleach are manufactured electrochemically, while the batteries that power all manner of appliances, vehicles, and devices are the products of electrochemical research. Other realms in which electrochemical science plays a crucial role include corrosion, the disinfection of water, neurophysiology, sensors, energy storage, semiconductors, the physics of thunderstorms, biomedical analysis, and so on. This book treats electrochemistry as a science in its own right, albeit resting firmly on foundations provided by chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Early chapters discuss the electrical and chemical properties of materials from which electrochemical cells are constructed. The behavior of such cells is addressed in later chapters, with emphasis on the electrodes and the reactions that occur on their surfaces. The role of transport to and from electrodes is a topic that commands attention, because it crucially determines cell efficiency. Final chapters deal with voltammetry, the methodology used to investigate electrode behavior. Interspersed among the more fundamental chapters are chapters devoted to applications of electrochemistry: electrosynthesis, power sources, green electrochemistry , and corrosion. Electrochemical Science and Technology is addressed to all who have a need to come to grips with the fundamentals of electrochemistry and to learn about some of its applications. It will constitute a text for a senior undergraduate or graduate course in electrochemistry. It also serves as a source of material of interest to scientists and technologists in various fields throughout academia, industry, and government chemists, physicists, engineers, environmentalists, materials scientists, biologists, and those in related endeavors. This book: * Provides a background to electrochemistry, as well as treating the topic itself. * Is accessible to all with a foundation in physical science, not solely to chemists. * Is addressed both to students and those later in their careers. * Features web links (through www.wiley.com/go/EST) to extensive material that is of a more tangential, specialized, or mathematical nature. * Includes questions as footnotes to support the reader s evolving comprehension of the material, with fully worked answers provided on the web. * Provides web access to Excel(R) spreadsheets which allow the reader to model electrochemical events. * Has a copious Appendix of relevant data.

Catalysis in Asymmetric Synthesis
Asymmetric synthesis has become a major aspect of modern organic chemistry. The importance of stereochemical purity in pharmaceutical products has been one driving force in the quest for improved control over the stereochemical outcome of organic reactions. Asymmetric catalysis is an important aspect of asymmetric synthesis, and one that has seen tremendous activity over the past decade. This book is planned from the point of view of the synthetic organic chemist, i. e. by transformation rather than on the basis of the organometallic chemistry. The emphasis is on non-enzymatic methods of asymmetric catalysis, although key references to enzyme-catalysed reactions have been incorporated where appropriate. The book is extensively referenced and so provides a convenient point of entry to the primary literature.

Bio-Based Solvents
A multidisciplinary overview of bio-derived solvent applications, life cycle analysis, and strategies required for industrial commercialization This book provides the first and only comprehensive review of the state-of-the-science in bio-derived solvents. Drawing on their own pioneering work in the field, as well as an exhaustive survey of the world literature on the subject, the authors cover all the bases from bio-derived solvent applications to life cycle analysis to strategies for industrial commercialization for researchers and professional chemists working across a range of industries. In the increasingly critical area of sustainable chemistry, the search for new and better green solvents has become a top priority. Thanks to their renewability, biodegradability and low toxicity, as well as their potential to promote advantageous organic reactions, green solvents offer the promise of significantly reducing the pernicious effects of chemical processes on human health and the environment. Following an overview of the current solvents markets and the challenges and opportunities presented by bio-derived solvents, a series of dedicated chapters cover all significant classes of solvent arranged by origin and/or chemical structure. Throughout, real-world examples are used to help demonstrate the various advantages, drawbacks, and limitations of each class of solvent. Topics covered include: * The commercial potential of various renewably sourced solvents, such as glycerol * The various advantages and disadvantages of bio-derived versus petroleum-based solvents * Renewably-sourced and waste-derived solvents in the design of eco-efficient processes * Life cycle assessment and predictive methods for bio-based solvents * Industrial and commercial viability of bio-based solvents now and in the years ahead * Potential and limitations of methodologies involving bio-derived solvents * New developments and emerging trends in the field and the shape of things to come Considering the vast potential for new and better products suggested by recent developments in this exciting field, Bio-Based Solvents will be a welcome resource among students and researchers in catalysis, organic synthesis, electrochemistry, and pharmaceuticals, as well as industrial chemists involved in manufacturing processes and formulation, and policy makers.

The Chemistry of Free Radicals: Peroxyl Radicals
Peroxy radicals are formed in biological systems, the atmosphere and agueous waste and are important intermediates in the breakdown both of organic molecules and several inorganic species. The implications of their chemistry are far reaching and of great importance. Until now their has been no one volume which bring together all aspects of peroxy radical chemistry - from their formation, to their wide and varied chemistry in the aqueous environment, biological systems, solid matrices, polymeric systems and the atmosphere. Peroxy radicals react with CFCs and HFCs in the atmosphere, resulting in the further destruction of the ozone layer - a point which is of topical interest.
