This handbook discusses and reviews the most recent trends in cathodic protection of metallic structures such as pipelines and buried tanks, widely used in many strategic industries such as petroleum, petrochemical, chemical applications. It contains very important practical points about designing, calculations, installation, performance, maintenance and troubleshooting of the cathodic protection systems. In sections 1 and 2, metals corrosion and processes and corrosion electrochemical theories and cathodic protection of the materials are discussed. Section 3 examines cathodic protection criteria, unpleasant consequences of cathodic protection under and above allowable levels. In section 4, field measurements and evaluations of cathodic protection as well as cathodic protection design are explored. The volume is accompanied by a CD, which allows computer calculation of a range of solution properties for selected temperature and phase composition ranges for the systems presented in that particular volume. Graphical representations, including the calculated phase diagram for each system, are also possible. Information on more comprehensive software, allowing complex equilibrium calculations involving both pure substances and solution phases of different types (e.g. slags, salt systems, aqueous solutions, etc.), can be obtained from SGTE members. A list of the SGTE membership is presented in the cover pages of this volume.

One Hundred Years at the Intersection of Chemistry and Physics: The Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society 1911-2011
This volume, occasioned by the centenary of the Fritz Haber Institute, formerly the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, covers the institute's scientific and institutional history from its founding until the present. The institute was among the earliest established by the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, and its inauguration was one of the first steps in the development of Berlin-Dahlem into a center for scientific research. Its establishment was made possible by an endowment from Leopold Koppel, granted on the condition that Fritz Haber, well-known for his discovery of a method to synthesize ammonia from its elements, be made its director. The history of the institute has largely paralleled that of 20th-century Germany. It undertook controversial weapons research during World War I, followed by a Golden Era during the 1920s, in spite of financial hardships. Under the National Socialists it experienced a purge of its scientific staff and a diversion of its research into the service of the new regime, accompanied by a breakdown in its international relations. In the immediate aftermath of World War II it suffered crippling material losses, from which it recovered slowly in the post-war era. In 1953, shortly after taking the name of its founding director, the institute joined the fledgling Max Planck Society. During the 1950s and 60s, the institute supported diverse researches into the structure of matter and electron microscopy in a territorially insular and politically precarious West-Berlin. In subsequent decades, as both Berlin and the Max Planck Society underwent significant changes, the institute reorganized around a board of coequal scientific directors and a renewed focus on the investigation of elementary processes on surfaces and interfaces, topics of research that had been central to the work of Fritz Haber and the first Golden Era of the institute.

This volume provides structural data of selected proteins, physical and chemical properties of amino acids, peptides and proteins, and information on theoretical studies. The pace at which new data are being generated in the biological sciences is breathtaking. However, it also creates a problem. Vast amounts of unsurveyable information may actually turn into desinformation by obliterating the borderlines of high and low quality data. Therefore authoritative data compilations bearing the state of the art approval of experts in the field are becoming increasingly important in view of this knowledge explosion. Another aspect of science development necessitates the availability of critically reviewed data compilations. We are witnessing an ever increasing degree of interdependence between previously more or less independently evolving branches of science. For example biotechnology and the pharmaceutically sciences are thriving as much on new findings in molecular biology as they profit from structural or thermodynamic information.

The present volume in the New Series of Landolt-Boernstein provides critically evaluated data on phase diagrams, crystallographic and thermodynamic data of ternary alloy systems. Reliable phase diagrams provide materials scientists and engineers with basic information important for fundamental research, development and optimization of materials. The often conflicting literature data have been critically evaluated by Materials Science International Team, MSIT (R), a team working together since many years, and with expertise in a broad range of methods, materials and applications. All evaluation reports published here have undergone a thorough review process in which the reviewers had access to all the original data. The data for each ternary system are provided in a standard format which includes text, tables and diagrams. The topics presented are literature data, binary systems, solid phases, pseudobinary systems, invariant equilibria, liquidus, solidus, and solvus surfaces, isothermal sections, temperature-composition sections, thermodynamics, materials properties and applications, and miscellanea. Thermodynamic data for inorganic materials are fundamental for the optimisation of existing process parameters and for investigating suitable parameters for carrying out potential new processes. With the aid of such data, time and costs can be saved by calculating the conditions necessary to produce a material of the required composition and specified purity, with a minimum usage of energy and input materials and with a minimum release of harmful substances to the environment. The SGTE evaluated data presented here are tabulated values of standard thermodynamic properties (enthalpy of formation and standard entropy at 298.15K, enthalpies and temperatures of transition, heat content) for each substance, together with plotted heat capacity, Gibbs energy and enthalpy of formation functions up to the maximum temperature for which the data for that substance have been evaluated. The data are presented in 3 subvolumes, A: Pure Substances, B: Binary Systems, C: Ternary and Multi-Component Systems.

The renowned English chemist and meteorologist John Dalton (1766-1844) published A New System of Chemical Philosophy in two volumes, between 1808 and 1827. Dalton's discovery of the importance of the relative weight and structure of particles of a compound for explaining chemical reactions transformed atomic theory and laid the basis for much of what is modern chemistry. Volume 1, published 1808-1810, introduces Dalton's atomic theory and includes the results he obtained for the weights and structures of twelve groups of compounds. Volume 2, 1827, contains sections examining the weights and structures of two-element compounds for five different compound groups along with various notes and tables. Dalton's work is a monument of nineteenth-century chemistry. It will continue to be read and enjoyed by anybody interested in the history and development of science.
