Solid state ionics is a multidisciplinary scientific and industrial field dealing with ionic transport phenomena in solids. In a couple of decades, solid state ionics has become one of the largest disciplines closely related to energy technologies, such as batteries, fuel cells, and so on. So far, a large number of scientists and engineers in Asia as well as in Europe and US are engaged in the research in solid state ionics. In the context of such a situation, the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics was founded in 1986, and a series of academic conferences has been held biennially since 1988. In 2012, the 13th conference is organized in Sendai, Japan. This book provides research papers describing the latest developments and findings in the field of solid state ionics. The selected contributions from prominent researchers in the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics , which are presented at the 13th Asian Conference on Solid State Ionics, can be found. Plasticizers Database
The plasticizer database was developed to contain data required in plasticizers application. Attempts were made to include large number of plasticizers used in various sectors of industry to provide information for all users and to help in finding new solutions and formulations. Plasticizers included in the database can be divided into two categories: generic chemical name compounds and commercial plasticizers which are either mixtures of several components, industrial grades of particular compound, polymeric materials, or products having unknown, complex composition. The database contains solvents representing all chemical groups of materials which considered as plasticizers. In most cases, plasticizers differ from solvents by boiling point, which is above 250oC, but some plasticizers are used as temporary plasticizers or are expect to react with other components of mixture. These substances will not meet the boiling temperature standard but will still be included since they play role of plasticizers. The large number of the plasticizers and the data fields makes this database the most comprehensive database on plasticizers ever available in any source.

Tracer Kinetics in Biomedical Research: from Data to Model
The use of mathematical modelling techniques in biomedical research is playing an increasingly important role in the understanding of the pathophysiology of disease processes. This includes not only understanding mechanisms of physiological processes, but also diagnosis and treatment. In addition, its introduction in the study of genomics and proteomics is key in understanding the functional characteristics of gene expression and protein assembly and secretion. Finally, with the increasing complexity and associated cost of drug development, modelling techniques are being used to streamline the process. This book is designed to give the reader the mathematical and statistical information necessary to design tracer kinetic studies, to use non-compartmental methodologies and/or to develop multi-compartmental models to interpret the data. The book starts with a review of fundamentals of radioactive and stable isotope tracer kinetics and then proceeds with a description of the non-compartmental and multi-compartmental modelling methodologies to study systems in the steady state.; The focus is on understanding the basic assumptions inherent in the methodologies and the underlying mathematics and statistics, on discussing how to assess how good a model is and on giving some hints on how better to design kinetic studies, in order to increase the probability of a successful study and to ensure the maximal information content in the experimental data to be extracted. The book has a section on parameter estimation, fitting models to data, first in general terms and then specifically related to non-compartmental and compartmental models. This is written from a basic point of view, and is intended to remove the mystery from the black box of computer optimization software. Finally, a special application often found in tracer kinetic analysis, precursor-product relationships, is discussed. Throughout the book, the goal is to provide even the novice with sufficient background so that he/she can feel comfortable. A number of case studies, based upon real experimental data, are carried through the text. Other examples illustrate specific points. All data examples are provided on a floppy disk.

This publication is the fourth major treatise on photochromism involving organic molecules and derived systems. The first such book was edited by G.H. Brown in the Weissberger series in 1971, the second was edited by H. Durr and H. Bouas-Laurent in the Elsevier series in 1990. A third book, edited by C.B. McArdle, should be added to the list, which focuses on the very important topic of the behavior of photochromic systems in polymer matrices.; This book is a result of the large increase in the number of publications and patents concerning photochromic compounds and their use in various applications, such as ophthalmic lenses and security printing, during the last 10 years. As a result of this increased interest, two successful International Symposia on Photochromism have been held: the first, ISOP93, in France on Embiez Island near Bandol (September 12-16, 1993) and the second, ISOP96, in the United States in Clearwater, Florida (September 8-12, 1996). The number of countries represented at each of these symposia (17 and 16, respectively) attests to the international scope of the photochromic research community. This global interest is also exemplified by the authors of the chapters within this book. The aim of the second volume of this new review is focused on the physico-chemical properties and photochromic behavior of the best-known systems, leading to new developments in the known photochromic series or the discovery of new families.; However, chapters are included on the most appropriate physico-chemical methods by which photochromic substances can be studied (spectrokinetic studies on photostationary states, Raman spectroscopy, EPR, chemical computations and molecular modeling, X-ray diffraction analysis). In addition, special topics such as interaction between photochromic compounds and polymer matrices, photodegradation mechanisms, and potential biological applications have been treated. The last chapter, on thermochromic materials, is included to emphasize the chemical similarities between photochromic and thermochromic materials.; In general, the literature cited within the chapters covers publications through 1995.

This database is a compilation of experimentally-determined solubility ranges of over 1,700 compounds in the National Toxicology Program's Chemical Repository. Each compound's solubility was determined in a consistent manner in one to six solvents. Solvents chosen were those most commonly used for toxicology studies, spill cleanups, and chemical synthesis or chemical reaction experiments. These solvents include acetone, 95% ethanol, water, dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, and toluene. Data for many of the research and industrial chemicals featured in this database does not exist anywhere else. The database is also remarkably simple to use and offers many features that make finding information quick and easy. Compounds can be located by using partial names such as acids, amines, ketones, cyanides, and ethers. You can also locate compounds by using their CAS Number or by entering the specific chemical name. The program is entirely menu-driven and can perform Boolean and/or type searches. It comes equipped with one 3-1/2 diskette and one 5-1/4 diskette, a 20-page manual, and can run on IBM or IBM compatible hardware. Dos 2.0 or higher, 640K of internal memory, and 1mb of hard drive memory are required.
